You are the demigod, and your quest begins! Use your skills in this interactive and customizable e-book. Combining four short stories, "The Two-Headed Guidance Counselor," "The Library of Deadly Weapons," "My Demon Satyr Tea Party,” and "My Personal Zombie Apocalypse," your choices will have consequences in this demigod adventure.
Demigods of Olympus: An Interactive Adventure , apparently a standalone, I read it cause, it was a book by Rick Riordan, and well I love Rick Riordan's books, except THIS ONE!
The plot was terrible, something happened, and then later, something else happened, I could barley understand what was happening half the time. Plus there was a lot of stuff that got repeated especially, when I had to choose what happens next, it was just super confusing, and I was disappointed, in it.
The Writing, WAS TERRIBLE, I DIDN'T LIKE IT AT ALL, I MEAN, I DIDN'T REALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT WAS HAPPENING MOST OF THE TIME!
The Characters
Zane Well, technically I was Zane, so I guess he was okay, cause I was him, (THIS IS SUPER CONFUSING)
Sam Sam was cool, I guess (I don't really have any thoughts on him)
Other There weren't really anymore characters except, like a few gods, and a person here and there, BUT SERIOUSLY WHO MAKES A BOOK WITH LIKE 2 CHARACTERS, WHILE THE OTHER JUST APPEAR IN 2 PAGES OR SOMETHING!
This Part does have spoilers... BEWARE!
Why'd I rate this 2 stars, technically, 1.5 stars? Because, I didn't like it at all, it was kinda boring, and SUPER HARD to understand, plus, Zane's godly parent is ATHENA, SERIOUSLY!
Overall, I pretty much hated it, and did not enjoy it one bit
I still liked it but at this point I wish Riordan would do something new and surprising, something outside his comfort zone. Like why can't one of the Demigod heros for once be a daughter of Demeter?!
This was....very different from what I expected/read/am used to.
But nevertheless, the writing was marvelous as always, you just get sucked into an abyss and you only come out after finishing the whole story.
Every hero needs a god friend Sam, right? Sam(s) are usually the best friends in every possible ways. Take Sam and Frodo for exemple. So I liked this Sam. And I liked Zane too. I started suspecting whos his godly parent was but otherwise it was interesting watching him go through all the nasty stuff.
My understanding is that this was written for people who don’t have the app. Although, for something that was written for people who don’t have the app, it’s a little confusing why Rick Riordan hasn’t released the final chapter, “My Personal Zombie Apocalypse” for the app, when he had the whole story released for ebook form. Now granted, it would be another $2.99 through the app and I, probably against my better judgement, shelled out $6.99 for the ebook on Google Play (although it wasn’t the $8.99 that Google Play is going to regularly charge, I think?). To be honest, for what readers are given in the ebook in terms of being able to "pick their adventure", they're being robbed blind for being given so little choice.
However, with the ebook released, it would be prudent for app users to have the satisfaction of finishing the journey that they started over a year ago. If you have the app, skip the ebook. It’s not worth shelling out the extra money. Is waiting going to be a pain in the ass? Yes. But you’re better off shelling out the $2.99 for the last chapter rather than shelling out an additional $6.99, or whatever your ebook retailer of choice charges.
Another difference is that you don’t really get to make as many choices in the ebook version. The app allows about five choices per chapter, but the ebook gives you about two choices and then a link that says “do the thing” (whatever that thing happens to be, like for example there’s one where you have no other choice other than to put on the ring you pick up in the third chapter, don’t do it Frodo). Much of the freedom of choice is constrained by the fact that Riordan creates the protagonist for you, unsurprisingly a male protagonist by the name of Zane Carver (I really wish he would have created a female protagonist, but that’s just my personal preference).
Right away one of the obvious changes from the app version is that Zane apparently doesn’t select a favorite god/godess in the narrative, and you don't get to pick the object that Zayne picks when he meets Mnemosyne in the library. In fact there are other arbitrary decisions that Riordan makes for Zane that app users are free to make. Now, the app is different in that you also get to create a character that is either male or female. The first chapter on the app is free, and yes, each subsequent chapter is $2.99, but in the end fans are still coming out ahead to go with the app as opposed to buying the ebook.
This was a really fun and quick read. I loved reading about some of the minor gods and goddesses that we didn't get a chance to hear about in the Percy Jackson series. Like I said in a previous status this book took me back to when I used to read choose your own adventure Goosebumps books as a kid. The actual story was really great too. It was something similar to what you would have read in the early Percy books. Zane and Sam's friendship was probably my favourite thing about this book. I wish there were more choices to who Zane's parent was, but I am just so in love and obsessed with Percy's world it didn't worry me too much. As long as Rick Riordan keeps writing books I'll definitely be reading them.
It a really interesting short story... It's weird not having chacarters for the Percy Jackson series in this book...
When I was reading the zombie part, it got me excited cos' I didn't actually expect that coming from a Rick Riordan book... But I guess he can surprise us everytime...
Now regarding Zane's parent... At first it got me thinking of Hermes as the first thing he thought of was 'Speed" in time of chaos... But I thought wrong... His real Parent got me shock I supposed... I dont know... I guess I keep thinking that he doesnt have the trait that I was looking for in a child of ******... Yeah...
Standard Riordan fare. Quick, light, unsurprising. I thought the tie-ins to Greek mythology were a little weak; they were less clever than what I’m used to. The narrator is a wisecracking teen boy, as always.
it was a cute idea, but there could’ve been more choices for the reader to make. it also seemed like a copy and paste of percy and grover instead of developing new characters
This was sooo much fun. I love the world that Rick Riordan has created!
Usually with books like this, I go back and choose different options to experience everything, but I found my original story to be so good that I didn't even need to bother.
As with anything written by Rick Riordan I had to give this a go especially since it’s such a short read and I’ll take anything to expand my Percy Jackson universe. At first this did seem a little week story wise but I did enjoy Zane and Sam as characters and they truly gave me old Percy and Grover buddy vibes which was nice to see, and the use of minor gods is always nice to see like the five clay and pottery destroying gods. The only real let down is Zane’s mother because couldn’t Rick have decided anyone a bit more creative.
being a fan since the boy who accused to stole the greatest lightning bolt, the story is so interesting, but maybe that will be so cool if there are more choice, because it was fun, it makes you think what would you do, well at least it make me tho. thankyou uncle rick for you hardwork, i really adore them.
Kinda disappointed. This is different from the stories in the app. In the app, it gives you more choices and control. This ebook is more about Zane, and not about the user. There is only one outcome (godly parent) and very few choices throughout the story. In short, not so interactive. The app with its short stories seemed worth it than getting this.
I enjoyed this interactive adventure and hope to continue this series I think this was a good first start the only thing i didn't like was that you couldn't pick your name or godly parent, but other than that this book was a great book.
i'm a bit confused by this idea of so many demigods just randomly living in cities and not going to camp. zane himself didn't necessarily show any particular traits that made him stand out from the other demigods we know, but he was okay; i really liked sam, though. he was sweet!
Entertaining but I wish there are other gods/goddesses who can be our parent. There's only one parent regardless of what you choose, and tbh I totally saw that coming.
