Root Code #2

Fall and Rising

Rate this book
Adam Yuga is on the run. Three months ago, a miracle saved him from the deadly genetic illness that threatens the entire population of his former home, the Protectorate. Now he and his lover Lochlan are searching for a way to heal his people. When they receive a mysterious coded message promising hope, they make a desperate grab for it, and are imprisoned—by the very race they want to save.

On Lochlan’s distant homeship, a young pilot named Nkiruka faces an agonizing choice: stay with her lover Satya and live a life of happy obscurity, or become the spiritual leader—and the last and only hope—for the Bideshi. Nkiruka doesn’t want to lose Satya, but worse, she fears she lacks the strength to carry anyone through the coming storm, let alone her entire people.

Threads of chance and destiny draw the three together. With the fates of civilizations in their hands, they prepare for a final conflict that might be their only chance for survival—or that might destroy them all.

Not nearly as good as the first one in this series Line and Orbit but has its own place in this dystopian world. I enjoyed this book but I feel like you have to read the first one to fully appreciate Fall and Rising. I loved how the characters Adam and Lock progressed in their relationship and this is what saved the book for me. these two will always be special to me as Moraine is brilliant at creating tension between these two so that we see how they really care for one another without always being in the bedroom, which is a thumbs up from me.
What I didn't like was the unnecessary characters and their POV I got bored of them quickly and soon ended skipping their sections all together, trying desperately to get back to Adam and Lock.

Would recommend if you loved Line and Orbit and want to re visit Lock and Adam and see how their doing.

3-3.5 stars

I loved Line and Orbit, and this was good, but missing something, not sure I can put my finger on it. Love Adam and Loch, really wish we got more of just them, but adore them and their love for each other. Not sure I will continue with the series, it is kind of...sad. I may just end it here.

2.5 stars. I really loved the first book in this series. It was a sweeping space opera with a compelling plot and interesting characters. Did not enjoy this one nearly as much. It continues the storyline of the first book, but was much more boring. It took almost a month to finish! A month! Unreal. It was overlong, the settings that were so cool in the first book were underutilized, the characters dull, the space magic far less charming. I found myself not really caring about Adam and Lochlan and that was sad because I liked them so much in book one. I do want to know how this all plays out, I even bought the third book before I started this one, but it is going to take an act of extreme willpower to tackle that one after this disappointment.

At first I felt underwhelmed, I don't exactly know why, maybe the direction in which the story was going wasn't what I had in mind for the characters. But nevertheless, it was an exciting read.

-I was given this book in exchange for an honest review-

The world needs a book like this in it. This book needs to get its name out there more.

This book not only has an amazing fantasy element packed with adventure and action, it has romance, and such diverse characters. I feel as if this novel would make for an amazing movie and it would hit the box offices like gold. It has characters of different ethnicity's, characters with unique names (or unique to their culture), it isn't just one culture it has many! The main couple is also diverse as it isn't two whites in love, it's two men of different cultures, not just their skin, but where they're from as well. This book features gay, lesbians, and straight couples which I just find wonderful as that's very rare to find in a book. It's rare to have so many different characters together, and then, have the novel have a perfect balance between the love, but the fantasy element as well.

The story line was interesting. I kept hoping that Sinder would find Adam, but only because I was hoping he would realize how awful the Proctorate was, almost was hoping they'd team up together against the Proctorate. (Sorry, Spelling?). The novel went at a nice pace, and it kept getting better as Adam found himself an 'army' to start trying to protect his people, and take down the Government he's from that is killing off his people. The story line, and characters were great!

I fell in love with Lock and Adam's relationship. My heart broke for Nikruka and Satya. I smiled at Aarons and Rachel. I loved Lock's personality, and I'd have to say he is my favorite character.

The reason why this did not get five stars is because it was a bit choppy for me. On Goodreads it says it's the first in the series, but then looking at all the authors books you realize it isn't. I was able to catch up eventually, but the first half of the book I almost put it down because I do NOT think this is a book one should real first, I think they probably should read the other book first to cause less confusion. Some novels can get away with any order, and sure I caught up eventually, but not every reader is like me where they just HAVE to finish a book. I recommend making it clear that there is another book before this one. The other choppy parts that made this book hard to follow was the formatting but I believe this is because I got it off Netgalley.

4/5 though as it turned out to be a really unique, and amazing read

Really liked this one. It's a good follow-up to Line and Orbit (which I had meant to reread before this came out but didn't get around to doing), but stands on its own fairly well too. The plot advances significantly in terms of the overall mytharc of this universe, and it was neat to see so many threads start coming together. The way that Lochlan and Adam's relationship changes and matures through this book was also really great to see - the nuance and the struggle in navigating their relationship while they both changed as people was well depicted.

I also really enjoyed a lot of the new characters we got to meet, especially those who are clearly going to have vital roles to play in the next book. I also liked the bits of Kae backstory we got here, which I think is nicely setting up the eventual Kae book. Definitely a good series to pick up for anyone who likes SF/space opera.

Seriously enjoyable space-opera/sci-fi with a compelling relationship in the middle. I left off reading this for way to long because I enjoyed book one so much and was scared. While it maybe doesn't pack quite as much of a punch as book one, it is still really compelling space-opera. In less skilled hands the world and world building could easily feel boring and derivative but Moraine's prose and overall story don't let that happen. I could have liked a little bit more time for character development between all the action, but I'll take what I was given happily (longer books are always good).

Like with the first book, this was just what I needed. I love the extended story and while some parts of the book are Just Sad, it also reflects the realities of this world and I am so excited to see what happens next. IT'S SO GOOD!!!

Fall and Rising, the sequel to Line and Orbit, picks up the threads of the first novel and evolves them. It's a more mature sort of novel – not in terms of racy content, though it is a kissing book – but in the way it dives deep into the characters' choices and the consequences of those choices. All the characters are dealing with the aftermath of a major battle, and trying to cope with their trauma while facing new threats. They’re dealing with profound loss at the same time as they’re simply trying to stay alive. As with Line and Orbit, romance and relationships are a major part of the novel, woven in-between the battles, desperate escapes, and daring fights. Fall and Rising tackles the natural evolution of Adam and Lochlan’s budding relationship from Line and Orbit. After the first heady days of a romance born in the midst of fleeing for their lives, they’re coming to learn more about each other, and learning to live with each other. They’re still fleeing for their lives, but the pace of their relationship is less breakneck. They're cautiously dealing with the difference in their cultures, figuring out who they are in relation to each other, and who they ultimately want to be within themselves. They’re learning who they are apart and together, how they strengthen each other, and where they need to compromise. In a way, they're both learning to grow up, and what being in a relationship and being in love really means. Love factors into the novel in other ways as well – the deep love of friendship, love for one’s people as opposed to the love of a specific person, and the ways love can tear you apart. The characters are faced with hard choices throughout the novel; they’re called on to make great sacrifices, and it’s wrenching to watch. The final scenes of the book especially are heart-hurting, but in the very best of ways. As always, Moraine’s prose is stunning, proving that a work can have it all – action, adventure, romance, strong characters, and gorgeous writing. I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series.

Disclaimer : I was given an ARC of this book in exchange of a review.

And this was a really good book ! I liked the story and the character. Although it was a bit frustrating in the beginning : I didn't know this book was not only part of a series but the 2nd book in said series! There were no indication of such in the summary or in the title, so I got pretty annoyed at all the references there were about all the events that happened before. Also, the whole "chosen one"/"woe is me"/"weary is the head that hold the crown" was grating so I liked how it didn't turned out quite like that. I am looking forward to read more about what happen next.

Do not read this book first!

Definitely read Line and Orbit first, it’s book one in this series and you’ll need to have read it first. Book one is hard to find, but worth the hunt. This second book is an excellent follow up to the first, there is much less world building. However the relationship building and rising tensions as our main characters face unavoidable battles is handled very well. It’s an important second book in the series. I found all three refreshingly original. I’ve read some people not enjoying this as much as the first and I can understand why. I did not feel that way however, it’s simply the middle book in an awesome trilogy.

Took me a while to get into this one, probably because I couldn't remember any of the characters. Then I raced through the rest of it.
