Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.

Although Carla Kelly is well known among her readers as a writer of Regency romance, her main interest (and first writing success) is Western American fiction—more specifically, writing about America's Indian Wars. Although she had sold some of her work before, it was not until Carla began work in the National Park Service as a ranger/historian at Fort Laramie National Historic Site did she get serious about her writing career. (Or as she would be the first to admit, as serious as it gets.)

Carla wrote a series of what she now refers to as the "Fort Laramie stories," which are tales of the men, women and children of the Indian Wars era in Western history. Two of her stories, A Season for Heroes and Kathleen Flaherty's Long Winter, earned her Spur Awards from the Western Writers of America. She was the second woman to earn two Spurs from WWA (which, as everyone knows, is all you need to ride a horse). Her entire Indian Wars collection was published in 2003 as Here's to the Ladies: Stories of the Frontier Army. It remains her favorite work.

The mother of five children, Carla has always allowed her kids to earn their keep by appearing in her Regencies, most notably Marian's Christmas Wish, which is peopled by all kinds of relatives. Grown now, the Kelly kids are scattered here and there across the U.S. They continue to provide feedback, furnish fodder for stories and make frantic phone calls home during the holidays for recipes. (Carla Kelly is some cook.)

Carla's husband, Martin, is Director of Theatre at Valley City State University, in Valley City, North Dakota. Carla is currently overworked as a staff writer at the local daily newspaper. She also writes a weekly, award-winning column, "Prairie Lite."

Carla only started writing Regencies because of her interest in the Napoleonic Wars, which figures in many of her Regency novels and short stories. She specializes in writing about warfare at sea, and about the ordinary people of the British Isles who were, let's face it, far more numerous than lords and ladies.

Hobbies? She likes to crochet afghans, and read British crime fiction and history, principally military history. She's never happier than talking about the fur trade or Indian Wars with Park Service cronies. Her most recent gig with the National Park Service was at Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site on the Montana/North Dakota border.

Here's another side to this somewhat prosaic woman: She recently edited the fur trade journal of Swiss artist Rudolf F. Kurz (the 1851-1852 portion), and is gratified now and then to be asked to speak on scholarly subjects. She has also worked for the State Historical Society of North Dakota as a contract researcher. This has taken her to glamorous drudgery in several national archives and military history repositories. Gray archives boxes and old documents make her salivate.

Her mantra for writing comes from the subject of her thesis, Robert Utley, that dean of Indian Wars history. He told her the secret to writing is "to put your ass in the chair and keep it there until you're done." He's right, of course.

Her three favorite fictional works have remained constant through the years, although their rankings tend to shift: War and Peace, The Lawrenceville Stories, and A Town Like Alice. Favorite historical works are One Vast Winter Count, On the Border with Mackenzie and Crossing the Line. Favorite crime fiction authors are Michael Connelly, John Harvey and Peter Robinson.

And that's all she can think of that would interest anyone. Carla Kelly is quite ordinary, except when she is sometimes prevailed upon to sing a scurrilous song about lumberjacks, or warble "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" in Latin. Then you m

CHRISTMAS EVE PROPOSAL by Carla Kelly

Christmas gets more interesting when sailing master Ben Muir takes lodgings with Mandy Mathison! Because when her scandalous past is revealed, only he can save her future...

I love Carla Kelly's stories. It's great to read about the "real" people once in awhile, and hers are always so well done. In this one, Ben Muir, sailing master, has arrived in Venable to tutor a midshipman from his ship. The young man is the son of a nobleman, spoiled and lazy, and Ben is not looking forward to it at all. Things get a little brighter for him when he enters Mandy's Tearoom for a meal and an inquiry about lodging. Mandy and her Aunt Sal offer him a room in their home, and he's floored by Mandy's sweet and kind nature.

Mandy is sweet and charming and quite lovely, especially to Ben's lonely eyes. She's fascinated by his stories, and quite taken by his gentlemanly ways. Ben finds himself more interested in spending his free time with her than in the peaceful pursuits he'd had planned. I loved how she looked after him and worried about him.

I loved seeing the two of them grow closer, quite obviously falling in love. But Ben is certain that Mandy would not care to be married to a man who is gone so much and always in danger. Then Ben learns something that could change Mandy's life. What happens next is heartbreaking and heartwarming. The actions of the local lord are cruel, and I loved seeing Mandy stand up to him. I felt badly for Ben, who feels responsible for it all. He's afraid to declare his feelings for Mandy, and instead leaves to visit his father in Scotland. The consequences of Mandy's defiance come home to roost, and their future looks bleak indeed. I liked the solution the vicar came up with. Meanwhile, Ben's visit home isn't what he expected, with an unexpected twist that sends him rushing back to Venable. I loved what happened when he arrived, as he found his courage, with a little bit of a boost from Mandy herself. I'd love a glimpse of their future, a few years down the road.

THE VISCOUNT'S CHRISTMAS KISS by Georgie Lee

Lily Rutherford is shocked to learn the man who snubbed her years before will be staying for Christmas. Can she forgive the viscount in time for a stolen kiss under the mistletoe?

Good story of second chances. Four years earlier, Lily and Gregor had met at a London ball. They were both young and somewhat unsure of themselves. Gregor, as the second son, was due to leave for military service. He also suffers from being the unwanted son, his older brother being the heir and chosen one. Desperate for his father's approval, Gregor treats Lily badly after an unfortunate occurrence at the ball. Taking their cue from him, other people followed suit, making Lily's life miserable. Hurt, angry and ashamed, Lily returned to their country home and hasn't been back to London since then.

Now Gregor, a good friend of Lily's brother, has been invited to spend Christmas with the Rutherford family. Since that ball, Gregor has experienced the horrors of war, been injured, and lost both his father and older brother. He has never forgotten Lily, nor been able to stop feeling guilty over the way he treated her. All he can do is hope that she will allow him to apologize. Lily is horrified to find out that Gregor will be with them for the holidays. She's quite certain he hasn't changed, and is sure that he will look down on their family even more.

Their initial meeting doesn't go that well, as the typical household chaos once again puts Lily at a disadvantage. She's surprised by Gregor's more relaxed attitude, but doesn't really trust him. I was a bit irritated with her, as I thought she was a bit hypocritical. She is so sure that Gregor will look down on her family, but her attitude toward them is terrible. I thought she spent too much time on the things she didn't like about them, totally ignoring the fact that there is a great deal of love in the midst of the chaos. I really liked Gregor's determination to apologize. He also realized that he is just as intrigued by her now as he had been previously.

I liked the development of their relationship. Gregor realizes that he wants to keep Lily in his life, but isn't sure that she will ever be able to see him as the man he is now. I liked seeing the way that he was able to tell her about his experience in the war and how it has changed him. I had high hopes that she was going to be able to let go of her grudge and open her heart to him. But an overheard conversation between her older sisters sends her back to believing the worst of him. She says some unkind things to him because of it. I liked seeing him stand up for himself, and point out a few of her own issues. I felt bad for him, as he now believes that there is no chance for a future between them.

I loved seeing her crazy aunt show Lily that she'd been wrong. Now Lily must decide if she has the courage to make her own apologies and go after what she really wants. I loved her big moment at the Christmas ball, and seeing how history tried to repeat itself, but with a very different result.

WALLFLOWER, WIDOW...WIFE! by Ann Lethbridge

Penniless widow Cassandra Norton faces Christmas on the run with her two stepdaughters, until Adam Royston sweeps her off her feet and into his country estate!

Good story about two people whose past experiences with marriage have left them with no desire to try it again. Cassie is a young woman who, for the time, is rather tall. This makes it difficult to find a husband and she ends up as the third wife to an old man. He married her for her connections and when things didn't go the way he wanted, he treated her badly. The only bright spot was her two young stepdaughters. When her husband died, her nasty stepson made her life miserable, until she took the two girls and left, making a new life far away.

Adam married young and loved his wife. But both were rather immature, which led to some bad decisions on both their parts. Adam's wife and unborn child were killed in an accident for which he blames himself. Now he spends his time as estate manager for his father and doing what he can to avoid being trapped into another marriage. He is currently assessing the property for sale.

In a meeting engineered by Cassie's stepdaughters, Adam is surprised by his immediate attraction to Cassie. Ever cautious about the intentions of unmarried women, he deliberately misleads her about who he is. Though he knows he should keep his distance, he finds both Cassie and her girls irresistible, and joins them on their hunt for greenery. Cassie is disturbed by the way Adam makes her feel. It's nothing like she's experienced before.

I liked seeing their relationship develop. Adam has held himself apart for so long, allowing the guilt he feels to stop him from moving on. Suddenly, Cassie and her girls have him thinking of everything he has missed. Part of him wants to keep her close, but another believes that he doesn't deserve it. I really liked seeing him lose himself in the enjoyment of just being with them. Cassie is just as attracted to Adam, but with her secret hanging over her, knows there is no chance of anything coming of it.

There's trouble when Cassie's stepson appears, trying to get them to come home. Cassie is suspicious of his motives. Her refusal causes him to make threats that mean if she wants to keep the girls safe, they are going to have to run again. His threats turn to actions that put them in danger, though luckily Adam is there to rescue them. I loved his need to care for them. The danger of what happened brings out the passion in both, and I loved seeing them finally give in to the heat between them. It wasn't all just physical, as Adam learns the truth of what had happened. When Herbert appears again, Adam is shocked to learn of Cassie's identity, but not nearly as stunned as Cassie when she finds out his. But best of all was seeing Adam deal with Herbert, then take his courage in hand and go after his future. The last chapter was a lovely wrapup.

Christmas Eve Proposal by Carla Kelly.
2 stars.
I picked this book because I love this author but this time didn´t work for me. It was a bland love story with too much perfect MC´s who didn´t grab me. So I dnf-ed it.

The Viscount Christmas Kiss by Georgie Lee
3 stars.
Sweet and enjoyable. I liked it well enough. A bit rushed but that´s usually the thing with novellas. But there was some depth in the MC´s and their feelings that give the story a plus.

Wallflower, Widow… Wife! by Ann Lethbridge
No rating.
Widows in HR´s are a pet peeve of mine. Usually authors use them to spice up the plot, so the moment the hero began to watch her bosom rise and fall I abandoned it. Maybe I was a bit rash so take this review with a bit lot of salt.

***

Christmas Eve Proposal por Carla Kelly.
2 estrellas.
Elegí este libro porque me encanta esta autora, pero esta historia no ha funcionado para mí. El romance es tan soso y los protagonistas tan aburridamente perfectos que me ha sido imposible terminarla.

The Viscount Christmas Kiss por Georgie Lee
3 estrellas.
Dulce y entretenida. Me ha gustado bastante. Un poco acelerada, pero es lo habitual con este tipo de historias cortas. Aún así los personajes y sus sentimientos han tenido cierta profundidad y le ha dado un plus a la historia.

Wallflower, Widow… Wife! por Ann Lethbridge
No puntúo.

The stories in this collection are fun. There were some traditions that I didn't know about that I enjoyed reading.

The stories are very different in style. They are different in the amount of "steam". The first two had innuendo, but didn't go past that. The third I was not the same.

All three stories are of a whirlwind romance that happens around the Christmas holiday.

One 5 stars novella and two 3 stars.

Christmas Eve Proposal - 5 stars

Carla Kelly writes wonderful stories and this one does not disappoints. A naval man in port for a short while with the mission to teach a pompous heir some naval math to allow him to pass a test to be promoted in the ranks. A 26yo woman whose parents marriage was annulled and currently lived with her aunt working in the town’s Coffee House. An emotional short story full of promise, expectation, friendship, self-doubts and a happy ending.

The Viscount’s Christmas Kiss - 3 stars

The story was sweet, but the plot quite implausible. The heroine was a little silly and I caught myself skipping pages.

Wallflower, Widow, Wife - 3 stars

It was a sweet story but very predictable. The heroine kept throwing herself at the hero and he kept avoiding going too far and then on the last page everything resolved itself, too easily, too soon.

This book contains three Christmas stories.

Christmas Eve Proposal by Carla Kelly.
A sweet story with a lovely romance.

The Viscount's Christmas Kiss by Georgie Lee.
Very silly and I skimmed most of it.

Wallflower, Widow...Wife! by Ann Lethbridge.
Another good story. I liked that the H and h were a bit older than in normal romances. Part of it was very steamy but you can gloss over this without losing any of the story.

All in all a nice Christmas anthology.

It Happened One Christmas is a delightful collection of three charming, heart-warming and spellbinding short stories guaranteed to put a smile on your face and move you to tears this holiday season!

Christmas Eve Proposal – Carla Kelly

Carla Kelly is one of historical romance’s best loved and most respected authors and in Christmas Eve Proposal, she has penned a tender, touching and captivating tale that continues to cement her standing as one of the genre’s best!

Sailing master Bennett Muir is not exactly full of the joys of the season. He has been engaged to teach mathematics to a spoiled, entitled and arrogant aristocrat with no interest in mathematics or sailing and is all alone in a small town where nothing of interest happens – until he sets foot in the village tea room and is bowled over by the charming proprietor, Mandy Mathison.

Mandy is kind, charming and absolutely beautiful – but she also has a secret. A secret that could destroy everything which she holds dear to her heart. When Ben becomes her lodger, the two begin to grow increasingly closer and when romance looks set to kindle under the mistletoe, will they take a chance on love? Or will Mandy let her scandalous secret get in the way of her happiness?

Christmas Eve Proposal is a beautifully written short story of second chances, hope, secrets and the power of love that sparkles with warmth, magic and charm. Carla Kelly’s gift for characterization is absolutely superb and her fantastic characters leap off the pages and will linger in the mind long after the last page is turned.

Stirring, emotional and hard to resist, Christmas Eve Proposal is another winner by this outstanding storyteller!

The Viscount’s Christmas Kiss – Georgie Lee

Rising historical romance star Georgie Lee continues to get better with every new book she writes and in her contribution to this anthology, The Viscount’s Christmas Kiss, she has written a spectacular short story that tickles the funny bone and touches the heart!

Lily Rutherford still remembers how humiliated and embarrassed she had felt when Gregor St James had refused to dance with her in front of all of polite society. Poor Lily has never quite managed to forget that excruciating snub by Gregor, so she is not exactly over the moon when her brother invites him to their house for the Christmas season. All Lily wants to do is hide from Gregor and hope that she can get through the Yuletide festivities without bumping into him, but that proves easier said than done….

Gregor had been absolutely enchanted by Lily when he had first met her at a ball. But desperate to win his father’s approval, he had heeded his advice and rescinded his offer to dance with her – a course of action which he has regretted ever since. Having realised that no other woman can ever match up to Lily, Gregor is desperate to prove to her that he is not the vain, self-absorbed man she thinks he is. But will he succeed in his quest? And could a stolen kiss under the mistletoe get Lily to change her mind?

I thoroughly enjoyed this enchanting short story that perfectly captures the magic and the spirit of the season. I adore Georgie Lee’s ability to sweep her readers into the world she creates and get them involved in the poignant, passionate and enthralling love stories she creates and she certainly does not disappoint in The Viscount’s Christmas Kiss! With characters so beautifully rendered that it is impossible not to care about them, humour, drama and uplifting romance, The Viscount’s Christmas Kiss is a first-class tale you will not easily forget!

Wallflower, Widow….Wife! – Ann Lethbridge

Ann Lethbridge’s name has become synonymous with fast-paced, page-turning and searingly emotional historical romances packed with intrigue, adventure and passion and in her Christmas short story, Wallflower, Widow…Wife!, she has once again outdone herself with a captivating tale of danger and desire that will hold you in thrall!

Lady Cassandra Norton is on the run with her two stepdaughters from a dangerous enemy intent on destruction. Taking refuge in a cottage on the estate of Sir Josiah, Cassandra makes ends meet by making candles and trying to keep as low a profile as possible and not to draw any attention to herself or her two charges. When a chance encounter leads her to Adam Royston’s door, Cassandra finds herself intrigued by the handsome estate manager – unaware of the powerful secret which he is hiding…

Adam is immediately drawn to Cassandra and the more time he spends with her, the more he finds himself falling in love with her. But having been lying to her from the very first moment they met, Adam is scared of how Cassandra will react when she finds out the truth about his identity.

Will a Christmas miracle give Adam and Cassandra the happy ending which they so richly deserve? Or will their unexpected romance be thwarted by an evil foe with vengeance on his mind?

A steamy, seductive and scintillating tale that will tug at your hearstrings and keep you on the edge of your seats, Wallflower, Widow…Wife! is a fantastic story of hope, finding the courage to love again and putting your heart on the line written with plenty of flair, style and sensitivity. As always, Ann Lethbridge has written a compulsively readable story you will not be able to resist and I defy anyone not to fall in love with her dashing hero and courageous heroine. Outstanding as ever, Wallflower, Widow…Wife! is another triumph for Ann Lethbridge!

A fantastic collection of three superb short stories, It Happened One Christmas! is a marvellous treat you will not want to miss!

Although I'd never read anything by the other authors, I purchased this book because of Carla Kelly. She tells wonderful stories -- especially ones about Christmas and their traditions in England.

CHRISTMAS EVE PROPOSAL (Carla Kelly)
While the ship he serves on is in dry-dock, Royal Navy Master Ben Muir takes a room near a student he is tutoring for 3 weeks. He meets a young woman he finds fascinating, Mandy (of the restaurant Mandy's Rose) who serves as a waitress. Muir finds out she is the illegitimate daughter of a Lord; when Muir defends Mandy, he upsets the barely-balanced tension between daughter and father. A masterful tale.

THE VISCOUNT'S CHRISTMAS KISS (Georgie Lee)
The premise of this story seemed so improbable that I found the rest of the story hard to accept. Gregor insulted his dance partner (Lily) years before (this is because his father insisted he does so!). Now he wants to make amends; will Lily forgive him? Who cares?

WALLFLOWER, WIDOW...WIFE (Ann Lethbridge)
Widow Cassie and her two step-daughters are in dire straits; they are hiding from Cassie's adult stepson. They live quietly and simply on one of the estates of the Earl of Portmaine. His son Adam (a widower) is going around the properties, checking through the ledgers. While on one property, he meets Cassie and the children and takes an interest. When the stepson finds Cassie, things turn bad quickly.

I was surprised to see such an erotic sex scene in a Christmas anthology.

I just finished Carla Kelly's story which begins this compilation, and I am setting the book aside for now. Because there is a feeling about it, something unique to Kelly's stories, that just gets to me. Reading on now, any other story by any other author no matter how good, would just feel like dross.

"He lay there...wondering how pleasant it would be to do nothing more than share a pillow with her. All the man-and-woman thing aside, how pleasant to chat with her in a dark room, talk over a day, plan for the next one."

So many romances these days, with their emphasis on lust or billionaire's bank accounts, are missing the point entirely I think.

I'm giving this book 4 stars because of the story by Carla Kelly. It reminded me a little of her novel Marrying The Captain, but while Ms. Kelly used some of the same elements, the plot ended up being different enough that it was a unique story - and up to her usual high standards. And although it was a short story, it felt complete. I recommend the book for the Kelly story, Christmas Eve Proposal.

This book consists of three separate stand-alone romance stories set around Christmas. While they're entertaining, they would've been better if they were longer cause things had to go by fast so that the couples end up together before or after Christmas day. There are cute moments but it's hard to completely root for the couples to get together when they just met and there wasn't enough time for proper development.

My thoughts of the stories individually:

1st story: It's cute. The couple is nice and the characters are great individually. The story has some soap opera plot that would've been nice if they were a bit more elaborated on. It's fun to read though and this is, I think, the shortest of the three stories.

2nd story: The plot would've been fun to read but I found the characters unlikable except for the main character. It was hard to finish the book as it got more annoying as the story progressed. The female protagonist's family is supposed to be the "nice, loving, and fun" type of family with the story trying to frame it like she's supposed to be lucky to have them but the entire story they just dismiss all of her problems and concerns like they're no big deal at all. The male love interest would've been okay but the ending made me not like him (it's a spoiler so I can't really say it). I couldn't be happy that they got together at all.

3rd story: Again, things happen too fast and the characters fall in love quickly (and uh, they're really attracted to each other). They have a cute dynamic though so I like their pairing. There's some lewd scenes but they're not super graphic. I like that they talked through the issues that are usually used to break up couples in other stories. This is the longest out of the three stories in the book.

Overall, I liked the first and last stories. The second one made me want to rip the book apart. If ever I end up rereading this someday, I'd skip story number 2.

Each story was short and sweet. I like that the guys in each story are interesting and not your typical one dimensional personality.

First story: it was sweet and cute. Although I was expecting something a little more scandalous about Mandy's past.... which turns out to be regarding her parents, she was just an innocent babe. She totally stood her ground and has her pride. Wish the horrible Lord faced some more consequences for his despicable actions. Ben and Mandy are definitely cute together.

Second story: mmmm I didn't enjoy it as much. I found Lily to be too critical and judgmental of her family. Plus she is all too hung up about appearances and what happened a few years ago with Gregor that resulted in her humiliation. Honestly, Gregor really stepped up and saved this story, at least he is willing to admit his mistakes and make amends, plus he has been honest from the start. Lily is always so self doubting and hung up on looks, like silly girl there is more to life, like family, second chances and being open minded.

Third story: another sweet story. Cassandra is trying hard to make a livelihood for her 2 young step-daughters but when her landlord passes away and her awful step son comes knocking on the door, what is she to do? I like how hard Cassandra works to keep moving forward, and doesn't give up. Adam is definitely an interesting one. The more time he spends with the girls and Cassandra, the more he realizes what he is missing in life. Wish Herbert got more of a whooping for all the trouble he caused them.

CHRISTMAS EVE PROPOSAL by Carla Kelly: 3/5

This story gave the perfect small-town Christmas vibes. The main weakness is an underdeveloped external conflict. I could not fully appreciate why Mandy's father was so spiteful towards her.

THE VISCOUNT'S CHRISTMAS KISS by Georgie Lee: 4/5

The strongest story out of all the three. It is set entirely in one home and the MCs already knew each other (it's a second chance romance), so the interactions and relationship development felt organic. The ending was pitch-perfect for a novella.

WALLFLOWER, WIDOW...WIFE! by Ann Lethbridge (2/5)

The setup was intriguing - both MCs were titled but concealed their identities from each other. This story was also the only open-door one in this collection. However, the plot was too much for a novella, resulting in underdeveloped characters. Christmas was also treated as a bookend rather than something integrated throughout.

1st story: 1 star.
I hate sailors, and this one wasn't an exception (sailor, commander, whatever), he thought too highly of himself. ¬__¬ Also, the story was really bad.

2nd story: 2 stars, actually 1,5. I hated the heroine's family, I couldn't stand them. The beginning was quite interesting, too bad the author decided to f*ck up everything rushing things because yeah, I know it's a novella, but I've read short stories with an *actual* plot developed well. Also, the ending was really disappointing.

3rd story: Didn't read it (because I bought the Italian edition of the above stories which are all separated, I didn't care for this).

3 stars mostly for Carla Kelly’s “Christmas Eve Proposal”. Really the only one worth reading.

“The Viscount’s Christmas Kiss” by Georgie Lee - This was mostly teen wangst — these kids met when they were sixteen, now they’re twenty. Undeveloped and felt more like a prelude to a longer novel.

“Wallflower, Widow…Wife!” by Ann Lethbridge. This was promising, and I like Lethbridge’s writing, but this was underdeveloped and rushed. Enough interesting character work that made me want to see more between these two.

This was a really fun Christmas story and I enjoyed all the and seeing how Cassandra and Adam's romance developed.
