The daughter of a town marshal, Linda Lael Miller is a #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of more than 100 historical and contemporary novels, most of which reflect her love of the West. Raised in Northport, Washington, Linda pursued her wanderlust, living in London and Arizona and traveling the world before returning to the state of her birth to settle down on a spacious property outside Spokane.
Linda traces the birth of her writing career to the day when a Northport teacher told her that the stories she was writing were good, that she just might have a future in writing. Later, when she decided to write novels, she endured her share of rejection before she sold Fletcher’s Woman in 1983 to Pocket Books. Since then, Linda has successfully published historicals, contemporaries, paranormals, mysteries and thrillers before coming home, in a literal sense, and concentrating on novels with a Western flavor. For her devotion to her craft, the Romance Writers of America awarded her their prestigious Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
Long a passionate Civil War buff, Linda has studied the era avidly for almost thirty years. She has read literally hundreds of books on the subject, explored numerous battlegrounds and made many visits to her favorite, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where she has witnessed re-enactments of the legendary clash between North and South. Linda explores that turbulent time in The Yankee Widow, a May 7, 2019 MIRA Books hardcover, also available in digital and audiobook formats.
Dedicated to helping others, “The First Lady of the West” personally financed fifteen years of her Linda Lael Miller Scholarships for Women, which she awarded to women 25 years and older who were seeking to improve their lot in life through education. She anticipates that her next charitable endeavors will benefit four-legged critters.

Arizona Heat by Linda Lael Miller is a 2017 HQN publication.

Just for the sake of clarity this is the second book in the Mojo Sheepshanks series. This two -book series has been reissued with new titles and new cover art.

I read the first book, originally titled, ‘Deadly Gamble’, several years back and loved it. However, I never got around to reading the second book. When I saw this one on Overdrive, I checked it out without even reading the description because I read everything I can by Linda Lael Miller.

But, when I realized I had the second ‘Mojo’ installment I did a happy dance!! Yay!!

The book starts off on a very somber note, as Mojo attends the funeral of a murdered child. But, the thing is, the child’s ghost is Mojo’s constant companion and will be until her murderer is found out, something the newly minted detective is determined to discover, with or without the help of her boyfriend, Tucker.

To make matters worse, Tucker’s children were friends with the murder victim and are traumatized by her death, prompting him to move back in with this ex-wife temporarily, for the sake of his kids.

If that weren’t bad enough, Mojo’s sister is being blackmailed and her philandering brother-in-law is missing.

I am so happy Mojo is getting a little added time in the spotlight. I would love for Linda add more books to this paranormal romantic suspense series. It is so good!!

Mojo is a terrific character, strong, yet conflicted, determined, but vulnerable, but most of all she’s smart and compassionate and will eventually make a very good detective, especially if she continues to receive help from the other side.

The book is fast-paced, with a touch of screwball humor here and there, as well as a super sexy and steamy romance filled with just the right amount of conflict and angst. The story has heart and emotion as well as suspense and action.

I don’t know why the series stopped suddenly because there is lots of room for character and relationship growth and the ending did hint at future installments which really has my curiosity peaked.

You will want to pick up the first book, ‘Deadly Gamble’ published in 2006, or the newly released digital version of the book, ‘Arizona Wild’, before starting this one.

I highly recommend this series to lovers of paranormal romance and romantic suspense and maybe even to those who enjoy contemporary western romance.

4.5 stars

No No No No Nooooo!! How could you leave us hanging like this LLM? This one was better than the 1st book even though I did really like that one too. I am still dumbstruck that she did not write anymore after this. She left us with a new character....which floored me at the end and she left the H&h up in the air. Great mystery and more romance in this one.

Five and a half chapters into "Deadly Deceptions" by Linda Lael Miller and I am so in love with this book that:

(a) I'm dreading finishing it, and
(b) Hoping and praying there will be more in this series.

Linda ... if you're out there ... I am not beneath grovelling!

When I read and reviewed "Deadly Gamble" I said that although enjoyable, at times it felt like a Janet Evanovich knock-off.

No more! "Deadly Deceptions" is "Deadly Gamble" grown up. And it's great! Although you can get enough background from "Deadly Deceptions" I would recommend reading the first in the series before picking up this book. "Deadly Deceptions" continues on about one week after the conclusion of "Deadly Gamble" and features the lovable, bumbling, hard-headed yet sensitive Mojo Sheepshanks, a PI who sees dead people!

The story focuses around the murder of seven year old Gillian Pellway who made her appearance at the conclusion of "Deadly Gamble". Of course Mojo's life isn't as straightforward as solving Gillian's murder, she also has to contend with finding out who is blackmailing her sister, whether her brother in law is cheating plus the other ghosts that "pop in" unannounced.

And then there's the complicated, sizzling and utterly gripping relationship with her on-again, off-again boyfriend Tucker.

"Deadly Deceptions" has ensured that the Mojo Sheepshanks series by Linda Lael Miller will be considered "must-read" and I will be scrambling at bookstores when future books are released.

Full disclosure: did not realize that this was book 2 (yeah, realize it was in the title, but missed it) and that oversight explained some of my challenges with the book. I had to play catch up on characters, their relationships and the storyline. My bad.

The story starts with a funeral, a ghost, a mystery and never slows down. The way the author brought most of the story full circle was interesting and well done. The murderers and their motive was horrifying.

I started reading and realized this was the second book, so had to stop and order book 1, and read it. Now I have finished both MoJo books and WANT a third! But there isn't one.

I sure hope Linda Lael Miller revisits this storyline and takes it further. I like the humor, sexiness and interesting twists of the paranormal plot lines. Good quick reads, fun entertaining characters. Each character in MoJo's life has many stories yet to be told, and I want to read them.

It's really rare for me to reject a book and not finish it. I'm that much of a book nerd. And usually, I find SOMETHING, whether character, storyline, location or other aspect that makes my time worth it. But I just could not tell you a single thing that made me want to continue reading this book after slogging about 1/3 of the way through.

I put it down twice to read other books thinking they might cleanse my palette, then tried some more.

I have enjoyed reading a few of Ms. Miller's books in the past, though the sampling of her work is admittedly small.

Sorry. Better things to do with my time.

I HATE that the author ended this series here... I guess I understand if something doesn’t speak to you anymore.. but to leave your readers hanging like that? The H and h didn’t get a HEA and there was a new character introduced. I am sad that we don’t get more of this but it is what it is.

Good sequel to Arizona Wild. This one picks up where the previous book left off, just after the murder of seven-year-old Gillian. Mojo is attending the funeral for the little girl, which feels especially odd to her, as the child's ghost is sitting next to her. Mojo is determined to do her best to find out who murdered the child, with or without the help of her cop boyfriend, Tucker.

This investigation isn't the only thing Mojo has going on in her life. She is also worried about her sister, Greer, who is being blackmailed over something in her past. Greer also has a philandering husband who is missing. Mojo's other sister, Jolie, is in the midst of a career change that doesn't make much sense, so she worries about that, too. Add in random other dead people that pop in and out of her life, and it's no wonder that she frequently doesn't know which way is up.

Mojo also has a stressful relationship with Tucker. The chemistry between them is smoking hot, which means they have a hard time keeping their hands off each other when they are together. But Tucker's divorce wasn't that long ago, and Mojo isn't all that certain that Tucker is completely over his wife. When his two children freak out over the death of their friend Gillian, Tucker moves back into the family home to reassure them. Unfortunately, that just adds to Mojo's fears.

I liked the relationship between Mojo and Tucker much more in this book. Mojo is able to express her fears to him, rather than just push him away. I thought that Tucker was pretty darn patient with her fears, and that he did everything he could to show her where his heart belonged. I liked the teasing that went on between them, especially over her addiction to the "Damn Fool's Guide" books that she constantly refers to. I loved the fact that he believed her about seeing dead people, and that he would listen when she would tell him what they said. His protectiveness was great, and he had an excellent track record of showing up just when he was needed. I hurt for him at the end, when his son ended up in the hospital, and he needed Mojo so badly. I loved how it worked out, and the end was pretty sweet.

The suspense of the story was really good. A fair amount was going on. There was Gillian's murder, and the search for who did it. When Danny was also hurt, the question became one of whether the two were connected. I had my suspicions about the culprit, and the final confrontation was intense and very scary. If it hadn't been for one of Mojo's other ghosts, it would probably not have ended well. Then there was Greer's story. She was being blackmailed over something from her past before she joined Mojo's family. She didn't know who was behind it. To meet the blackmailer's demands, she was sucking her husband's accounts dry. He had also spent money himself, trying to buy off the blackmailer. Then he turned up dead, shot multiple times and left in the desert, and Greer was a suspect. At least, until his ghost showed up in Mojo's house, wanting to clear her name. Though he didn't know who did it, he had some ideas. There was also some surprise information provided by his first wife, which sent Mojo off to Greer's hometown, just in time to save Greer's life. That confrontation had a couple of interesting twists to it that I didn't see coming.

I loved the various ghostly characters (okay, MOST of them). The teenager, Justin, just about broke my heart with the way that he was so worried about his mom and his dog. I loved that he took little Gillian under his wing and was able to interpret her signs for Mojo. I laughed a bit at the way he teased Mojo about her relationship with Tucker. The security guard who took care of Mojo's dog was cute with the way he enjoyed sitting in her car and pretending to drive. But the one who surprised me the most was the one who showed up at the end and offered to be her partner at the bar. I didn't realize he was a ghost the first time he appeared - and neither did she!

I'd really love to see another Mojo book!

Loved the Mojo Sheepshank series, both books were fast paced and had action and suspense mixed in with a steamy love story. Mojo is such an interesting lead character and how can you not love the main man Tucker.
This series needs to read in order for it to make the most sense; Arizona Wild, then Arizona Heat. The author left so much room for more stories to be added but sadly there are only the two. Disappointing! If she planned on only having the two books, she needed to write an epilogue to wrap the story up better. It is left wide open.

Second in the Mojo Sheepshank series. Just as good as Deadly Gamble. In the Miller style, the characters pull you in the first minute you meet them. As Mojo meets her first ghost Gillian, the plot takes off. Miller is a master at sub plots and quick gotchas which kept me immersed. I loved getting to know her boyfriend cop Tucker better and watching how their relationship evolved. Great book!

I loved the first book in the series (Deadly Gamble) and I loved this one even more. I am really hoping Linda Lael Miller adds more books to this series. Both books had me on the edge of my seat and I couldn't wait to find out how Mojo would solve the murders. I would definitely recommend this series.

OH. MY. HOLY-FREAKING-GOODNESS!!!!!

While I enjoy Miller's cowboy books, why is she not writing more urban fantasies??? The Mojo series is right up there with Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, Karen Chance, and Jeaniene Frost.

First, I'm not really into ghost/paranormal stories; my life is paranormal enough without taking on ghosts and dead children. However, I was interested enough to read the first story of the Mojo Sheepshanks series and decided to try the 2nd.

Miller has an excellent sense of timing in both of these books, so one is not too caught up with the strangeness of the plot line. However, I found the subject of Mojos career endeavors to be a bit depressing. We were introduced to the ghost of the 7-year-old deaf-mute girl, Gillian, in book 1.

While Mojo is trying to prove that Gillian's stepfather did not strangle the child, other bodies start to fall. Mojos brother-in-law dies and Mojos adopted sister is the most obvious suspect.

As a PI, Mojo seems at least as inept as Stephanie Plum (Janet Evanovich's bounty hunter heroine). However, Mojo has a good and caring heart and tries her best.

Before you get too caught up in my despair over this story, keep in mind that I'm not into paranormal anything, much less paranormal-mystery-romance.

I admire Mojo, but felt this story was just a bit too far out to be plausible. My interest in a new genre started to pale with the second book.

This review has taught me one thing; I'll stay away from reviewing stories with sub-genres that I don't particularly enjoy.

Mojo Sheepshanks, Greer, Jolie, Tucker Darroch

I have to admit that this one was better than the first book, as I suspected it would be. Tucker felt more like a love interest, so the romance was better. It seemed like their relationship was going more towards serious than the booty call situation they had going in the first book. At least from his end, he seemed to be making an effort to make it more.

There were still one too many things going on. Not sure why we had to have more than one mystery to solve. Or more than one thing that needed to be resolved. And just saying, why is Mojo characterized as a PI in the blurb. Amateur sleuth, that's what she is. She has no license for anything, except the liquor license she's waiting for to be switched into her name.

There were some things wrapped up at the end of this book, but still things left open-ended, that will apparently not get answered since there hasn't been a book in this series since 2008.

Arizona Heat picks up right where Arizona Wild left off. We get to see the continuation of Mojo's story! This book has all the whitty characters from book 1 and it introduces some new ones as well. We get to learn more about Mojo's new skills and how they develop. There is just enough romance, and just enough angst without taking away from the story line. I am absolutely in love with these books and I cannot believe there isn't a third! The way the book ended, it definitely left room for more stories. And tug at the heartstrings? I really felt for Mojo, and Tucker as well! I need to know what happens! Please @lindalaelmiller we need to know!

Very different from other titles by this author, although her quirky characters are here in abundance. Normally, I'm not thrilled with murder mysteries, particularly those that include ghosts, but the humor in this story served as a reduction of the shivers of terror even as PI Mojo strives to find out who is blackmailing the girl she calls a sister (she isn't), who killed the other victims who talk to her when she least expects it, and what will happen if she, too, is targeted.

This is part of a series that promises more chills and thrills and even sexy scenes, too.

Thumbs Up! Mojo, the main character, gives a quick recap of the previous book on the first two pages, which, I find helpful and wish more series authors would do. The book continues where the last book ended, with Mojo trying to help ghosts who start appearing, looking for her help- thanks to her late ex-husband Nick, posting her name at the heavenly train depot, before he moved on. Great characters, several separate plots going on at the same time and continual action. The downer is that the author so far hasn't continued the series.

The Sixth Sense with a female detective instead of a kid. Very different from Miller's other books, really more mystery. Also, the cover is totally deceptive. The book is more about Mojo Sheepshanks (yes, that's the name she chose), and trying to become a private investigator, and her boyfriend, Detective Tucker Darroch, and the murders she is trying to solve. Total marketing ploy to get you to buy the book, which, with female on the cover, they think you wouldn't buy it.

A light read and a little too unbelievable. Mojo sees and talks to dead people. She wants to solve the murder of a little girl. Mojo is also looking into whether her sister Gwen’s husband is cheating on her when he turns up dead. Gwen is suspected of killing him and secrets of her past are about to be discovered. Mojo is also involved with a divorced policeman and he helps her get some information also. The plot was good but the paranormal in the book was too far fetched.

Multiple crimes, multiple ghosts and some romance. I like Mojo she's a strong, caring, determined woman, even if she often is blundering along. Her soft feelings may be what helps her solve crimes and attract ghosts. I am sorry series ends here, it is obvious that there is room for more... Jolie's story, and bar/detective agency.

A cute Nancy Drewish mystery/romance. Mojo’s boyfriend, Tucker is pretty buff, and is certain she’s the girl for him even when she insists on taking so many chances. It’s unusual as she sees dead people and finds out a lot about cases to help her PI business and Tucker’s law enforcement, but it’s awful how 2 young girls are behind some kids deaths or terrible accidents.

Mojo Sheepshanks is a name most people will always remember. The name itself makes one curious about the person and definitely sounds fake. I like the pet name of Moje much better, it's softer and romantically pleasing yet it doesn't prepare one for the personality of the person wearing the moniker. A would-be PI with shades of Ghostbusters makes an interesting read.

Same great characters, same great plot, wrapped a lot of loose ends, darker than the first and more "descriptive". Such a good read with an intriguing heroine that can talk with dead people.
