The only thing Betty has left of her deceased husband is the old piano. It's not enough.
But music has its ways, and when the piano starts to play on its own in an empty room, old memories are brought back all too clearly, memories of happier days, of love and sunshine.
Betty needs to get those days back - but she is not the only one who remembers, and trying to bring back the past has unseen consequences.
I'm a Scottish writer, now living in Canada, with more than thirty novels published in the genre press and over 300 short story credits in thirteen countries.
My work has appeared in a number of professional anthologies and I have recent short story sales to NATURE Futures and Galaxy's Edge. When I'm not writing I play guitar, drink beer and dream of fortune and glory.
Another enjoyable short story from William Meikle. He's yet to fail me on any of his offerings and has quickly become one of my favorite authors. In The Persistence Of Memory, Betty misses her dear late husband George. Her fondest memories are his piano playing and singing old songs together. When the piano begins to strike notes on its own, Betty feels that George is trying to contact her from beyond the grave. In a desperate attempt to bring George back from the dead...well you'll have to see for yourself.

How far would you go to recover a lost love? This short story addresses that question when a widow thinks she hears her deceased husband playing his beloved piano. But will she get what she bargains for? Or a greater sense of loss.
William Meikle writes the weirdest short stories, peopled with characters that make the jabberwocky look normal and situations that sound as if they were concocted by someone on steroids laced with OxyContin. In other words, crazy good! The Persistence of Memory is another of his grab-you-by-the-throat stories. The old piano has seen better days, but for Betty it represents happier times, times when her husband was there to play it. Can the piano help Betty get those happy times back, or is it best to let the dead stay dead? Read this subtly chilling story and find out.
this was great! A ghost story with a big touch of romance! A widow in her later yrs longs to see her husband again. It starts with her waking up and hearing her late husband playing his piano in another room. She recalls parts of their life and so desperately wants to see him again. I loved reading this and enjoyed every part of it!! I loved the ending too! I have more of meikle's books in my kindle app and now after reading this one I can't wait to read the rest! Very enjoyable!
This was a sweet ghost story about an old woman who missed her dead husband. We went through memories of their past life together as Betty struggled with her sadness and loneliness. The story took a turn when she decided to try to contact her dead husband. My only concern: how did she gather the items that she needed? Some of them were, let's just say, unusual.
