Friendly warning: this crappy non-review is proof that having no day off for three months is hazardous to a girl's already decaying mental state. Read at your own risk.

Yeah, I know, you've never heard of this series.

Yeah, I know, you have no freaking idea who Violet Parker is.

Yeah, I know, you're judging this book by its ugly cover and wondering why the hell would anyone choose to read it.

Yeah yeah yeah, I know all that. What do you want me to say? Is it my fault there is no hope for you? Sigh.

►►Welcome to Deadwood, the only non-stupid paranormal mystery series I was ever given to read. To think I didn't even like the first instalment. I must have been young and stupid at the time. Well I was certainly young and stupid enough to continue with the series after giving that first book a 2-star rating. That would never happen now that I'm old, wise and highly intelligent. Oh no. I would go all (check all that apply) Rylee Adamson/Cal Leandros/Mind Sweeper/Colbana Files and send the series to Kindle Oblivion (yes, there is such a place. It is very dark, creepy and pretty stuffy, too. And generally very very scary ← feel free to shudder at this point). Actually, I could give you quite a few more examples of series that suffered this horrible fate but we don't have all day so I'll try and move on. Try being the key word here. Obviously. Anyway, had I been old, wise and highly intelligent when I read book 1 I would have given up on this series. Good thing I was young and stupid back then, huh? Ha.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know I'm not making much sense. Please don't tell me that surprises you. You weren't actually expecting anything less were you? Not with the two fried grey cells that are currently residing in my little head? Didn't think so. Good. Moving on. Or trying to. Again.

►► So, where were we? Oh yes, welcome to Deadwood! Deadwood is a pretty cool place:

A place where paranormal mysteries are no boring, silly Chick Lit-type fests.

A place where the female lead has many flaws but is no TSTL heroine.

A place where the local population is as weird/hilarious/crazy/assholish as it gets.

A place where spare body parts, ghosts, ghouls and weird creatures abound.

A place where there is romance but it isn't your usual STOOPID lovey-dovey nonsense ← I didn't even fall into one of my infamous sugar-shock induced comas while reading this book. Now that should tell you something.

►► What I like most about this series? The characters.

I love them all, starting with Violet. Which is pretty strange when you think about it. Because she is certainly no Kate Daniels. Or Muse. Or Shanti. Or Amra. Or Elise Kavanagh. Or Kate Prospero. Or #1001 ← should I go on or did you get it? You did? Good. Looks like I'm not the only highly intelligent human being around here. Anyway, Violet. A single mother of pain-in-the-ass-almost-teenage twins with tons of insecurities. Pretty much your average thirty-something girl. Not very exciting right? The thing about Violet is that she's got a wicked sense of humour. And some weird powers. And that she might be genetically destined to be some kind of executioner, too. Hmm, she might not be your average thirty-something girl after all. She might actually be pretty exciting after all ← were you seriously expecting me to get excited about a non-exciting female lead? Did I already say there was no hope for you? I did, didn't I? Oh well.

Who else? The whole cast of secondary characters: Doc Nyce aka Violet's boyfriend (who seems to be getting Nycer and Yummier with every new instalment. If he keeps it up he's destined to go poof only to magically appear in my harem), Old man Harvey aka the Hilarious Perv, his nephew Coop the Cop aka the resident aggravating pain in the butt, Nutcase Osh aka the Abe Lincoln lookalike... Hey, the characters in this series are so cool I even like the asshole in residence! ←oh will you please stop snickering for a minute?! I know this is no surprise to you because YES, I *always* like the asshole residence. There. I said it. Happy now? Sigh. I swear you people are going to be the death of me.

Hey, hold on for a minute! I thought this was just going to be one my standard crappy summer reviews but it looks like you're getting a never-ending crappy summer review instead! Lucky you! Aren't you glad you decided to read this?! *whispers* Psst, want me to let you in on a secret? There's no one holding you at gunpoint right now, you don't actually have to finish reading this non-review if you don't feel like it

Now, now, don't be scared. I'm almost done. Not quite. But almost.

►► Here, let me make this quick and painless for you (because I'm kind, thoughtful and compassionate like that. Of course I am. Why would you think otherwise?): the other thing I love about this series is the humour. The characters are funny as hell and the dialogues are hilarious. There. See? I can make it quick and painless when I want to. It's just that most of the time I like to watch you suffer.

►► Hold on for a second, I'm no quite done making this quick and painless! There is something else I love about this series! It's light and fun but it's not stupid! There is an actual non-stupid, entertaining plot in every instalment! And there is an actual non-stupid, entertaining series arc, too! So much so that my old, wise and highly intelligent self wouldn't dream of missing the next book in the series! Ha!

Book 1: Nearly Departed in Deadwood ★★
Book 2: Optical Delusions in Deadwood ★★★★
Book 3: Dead Case in Deadwood ★★★★
Book 4: Better Off Dead in Deadwood ★★★★
Book 5: An Ex to Grind in Deadwood ★★★★
Book 7: A Wild Fright in Deadwood ★★★★
Book 8: Rattling the Heat in Deadwood ★★★★
Book 9: Gone Haunting in Deadwood ★★★
Book 10: Don't Let it Snow in Deadwood ★★

[Pre-review nonsense]:

You. Cannot. Be. Serious. Ann. Charles. What do you mean the book is finished???!!! Just like that???!!! Mid-scene???!!!! WTH woman, how can you be so cruel???!!! Have you no mercy???!!! Now give me the next instalment before someone gets hurt.

►► Crappy review to come.

[August 14, 2015]:

I bet you've never heard of this series. Right. You're just as clueless as ever aren't you? Sigh. Let me enlighten you real quick:

And do you know what rating I gave book 1 in this series? Two stars. Yep, you read that right: TWO STARS. And yet here I am. Ha.

I am really looking forward to Violet coming into her own after she has learned more about what she is and about her family history. She and Doc are finally being honest with each other and it seems that they may become a permanent duo. This series is fun, spooky, and full of heat.

Much like the previous book in the series, this one doesn't have an ending. I don't mean a cliffhanger ending but literally no ending. It ends mid-scene. It picks up where the prior book left off but doesn't really go anywhere for over 400 pages before...nothing. No end. No resolution. Not even a very good idea of where the next will go or what a conclusion is building toward. Given all this, I can't really write a good review since so much of whether or not I like a book comes from the plot and pacing both of which are dependent on a story arc...a non-existent story arc in this case.

That being said, the humor that I've come to know and love in these books is evident on every page. I will read the next one for, hopefully, some final resolution. I'm starting to be afraid any resolution to come now after a build up of several books if going to be a disappointment.

As usual Ann Charles has another winner on her hands. I love reading about the antics of Violet and the gang. If you haven't read this series I definitely recommend it--you won't be able to put them down once you start reading them. You will make an instant connection with the characters. Ann spins a great story in every one!

The books are slowly getting better. Violet is accepting her role as an Executioner, albeit reluctantly, and delving more into the ghostly world. Her relationship with Doc is progressing slowly on the emotional front, as is her kids acceptance of Doc in her life. This book didn’t really have a murder, but focused more on the paranormal aspect and the deadly consequences Violet is having to face. More seances, more ghosts, more secrets revealed, what’s a Violet to do!!

Excellent newest instalment in the hilarious Deadwood paranormal/mystery series. I laughed out loud SO many times while reading this book!
Violet, Harvey and the gang are up to their own particular brand of hijinks in a continuation of the awesome series: mysteries, seances, ghosts, otherworldly ghoulies, romance and comedy all included!
I thought this book was the best one yet; highly recommend!

Ann Charles’ MEANWHILE, BACK IN DEADWOOD, is a romantic mystery/suspense story with fast moving action and lots of humor. Charles gives readers well developed characters both living and ghostly. Her characters and storyline come to life as action jumps off the page. Her female protagonist, Violet Parker, a single mother of twins, sells real estate of mostly haunted properties. She describes Violet special family gift of giving her the ability to see, hear, and talk to ghosts. Readers see and experience Violet struggling with her paranormal gifts and powers. Readers meet Charles’ male protagonist, Doc Nyce, Violet’s love interest and paranormal partner. Charles gives readers backstories on Violet and Doc including details of their paranormal skills. The author continues to provide more details as needed to keep readers informed as the story progresses.

Charles introduces key support characters, both living and dead, with backstories and their roles in the storyline. When Aunt Zoe tells Violet she inherits the role of an executioner, readers see Violet’s reaction to being a Ghost executioner. She increases her story’s intensity and builds momentum providing subplots and support characters to MEANWHILE, BACK IN DEADWOOD. Violet’s role in the new commercials for Calamity Jane Realty takes readers to each of the haunted properties. Readers shadow Violet and Doc as they seek information about who is responsible for the murders, kidnapping, and scary events in Deadwood.

The plot comes to life as Violet, Doc, Uncle Harvey, Natalie, Cooper and Cornelius work together to find answers to what happened at Harvey’s ranch. Readers sit down at a séance with Doc and Violet, looking for answers. Charles adds surprises and humor to her story, changing direction so fast readers are in a constant tailspin. Readers see Violet’s insecurities, learning why she thinks changes in her life will end her relationship with Doc. Readers see dangerous confrontation between Violet and big ghostly ghoul set on killing people she cares about. MEANWHILE, BACK IN DEADWOOD delivers an exciting story of human relationships and ghostly dangers with an Ann Charles ending giving everyone goosebumps. Charles’ ghost story is a must read and earns a 5-star ranking.

Meanwhile Back In Deadwood is book 6 in this wonderful, fun, spooky mystery series by Ann Charles and all I can say is that they just keep getting better! Ms. Charles has created a fun filled world full of well rounded characters that feel like friends and that you just have to love and want to come back to visit as often as you can. Along with that you get a mystery that makes you want to follow all the way to the end...of course you hope it never will end! I think of Ann Charles not only as an author, a writer but as a story teller. She weaves a magical tail that has you entranced with her words and humor.
In # 6 Violet is back and just trying to come to terms with "who" she is and what it means to her life as she knows it after the revelation of her family heritage. Doc is once again by her side and together they move forward, both in determining and dealing with the ghostly threats and their relationship as more spooky events take place around them.
To lighten the mood, Ann brings in a few of the cast members from her Jackrabbit Junction series to help celebrate Halloween with the Deadwood gang, and oh yes, the fun explodes into the streets!
This is a don't miss, fun packed, thoroughly entertaining book and series! I love it and can't wait for the next one!

Things that go bump in the night.

Violet and Doc are at it again. Making heat between them and trying to keep Deadwood safe from ghosts and goblins. Halloween is upon them and a ghost hunting TV crew want results. More of Violet's family history is disclosed and we learn more about Doc's ability as a medium. A great who done it and over much too soon.

5 Stars... What I loved so much about this book was that the author finally gives readers answers regarding Violet's family history and her role in the supernatural turmoil she finds herself... Some of the pieces from previous reads are fitted into their slots in the overall storyline pulling the entire series together... I also loved the dynamics between Violet and Doc; their relationship picks up momentum and takes some leaps forward in the read... Even with Violet's general misunderstandings and trust issues, she and Doc continue to make strides forward and keep that chemistry HOT...Doc is absolutely perfect with Violet's children demonstrating patience and compassion for them both (Even if at times they certainly do not earn it, LOL!)... Overall, this book propels the characters and the storyline forward in leaps and bounds while keeping some aspects of the mystery still stewing for readers to discover more truths in the future:)

This was book 6 in the "Deadwood " series. Violet and the gang are back with more ghost and creepy crawlers this time the gang must work together to find a killer. This time Violet learns more about her family and she must come to terms with who she is. In this book we see her relationship with Doc more forward even with her trust issues we also see that her kids are having issues with Doc. I love the back and fourth that she has with Detective “Coop” Cooper as they work together to find a killer. I love reading and listening to this book and all of the kooky weird characters in this series. I love the way Ms. Charles writes mystery and humor. I also love the narration. I am looking forward to listening to the next book in this series.

Violet and her purple boots are BACK and she's still finding bodies (well, kinda her finding them. I mean, she was there even if she wasn't *technically* the one stumbling over it.) and bringing the sass. She's also finding time to cozy up to her handsome honey while trying to dodge the truth about what she is. Or could be. Or needs to do.

It's complicated.

Anywho. Violet is dealing with dead things. Her kids are having issues with her new boyfriend. Her boss has pulled in a reality show to film the ghostly goings on. And then there's that whole "she's descended from a line of killers" thing. Which really isn't as bad as it sounds. Really.

Bottom line: I like Violet. I like Doc. I like how he's willing to listen to her and her craziness. Plus, they're just cuuuuute together. So, Violet and her crazy boots are winners in my book!

I'm enjoying how the characters are developing. I binged the first 5 books because I just couldn't get enough of their quips and how their interactions made me giggle. I did take a break between number five and this one because the author does a thorough job of providing backstory and it actually became monotonous. But that's only because I was binging. The upside to that is you could hop into this series anywhere and be up to date. In fact, this wouldn't be a bad one to start at because it's getting more interesting as Violet has discovered that she's a killer and is exploring what that actually means.

I like this series, although at times I think the paranormal stuff somewhat overwhelms the mystery part, and I would rather there be less paranormal activity and more mystery-solving with more 'every day' clues. However, I do like the characters, except for the creepy ones, so I will keep reading the series.

I don’t know what it is about this main character but there’s something that I’m not a fan of, it may be just the voice of the narrator that she gives her? I don’t know!
I am a fan of the mmc and 100% a fan of the the old uncle and the cop actually.
This series is a consent 3 star listen worth continuing

How exciting. Getting more into her family history and what she can accomplish with her group of friends. Violet is quite the Heroine in this story and her friends are all quite the powerful team. Looking forward to the next adventure in this series.

Violet Parker is a single mom to twins (one of who has a chicken as a house pet), and a struggling Realtor in Deadwood, South Dakota. She’s dating hot, handsome financial planner Doc, who has the office next to where she works. She keeps stumbling onto dead bodies, which brings her into regular contact with local hot but cranky cop Cooper. Oh, and did I mention she sees dead people, regularly stumbles over dead bodies, and comes from a long line of killers? And that Doc is a medium for restless spirits?

In book 6 of this entertaining, humor-filled, fast-paced paranormal mystery series, Violet’s boss is forcing her to participate in a reality paranormal show because he thinks it’s a cheap way to up the agency’s profile and bring in new business. She must work closely on the show with her arch-nemesis, Ray Underhill, while juggling romance, threats to her son, an Albino killer, problematic hair, crazy clients, crazier ghosts, and new threats from another prickly lawman, who thinks she might be a witch.

All of my favorite supporting characters were back for this go-round, including Coop’s Uncle Harvey, Violet’s bff, Natalie, Violet’s auntie, the town fire chief who’s in love with Violet’s auntie, and Violet’s co-workers. There’s a lot of witty banter among the gang, and some hair-raising adventures.

If I had one quibble with this entry, it was that there was a lot of detailed descriptions of Doc and Violet “getting busy”. That might be off-putting to some people, but I just paged on past those scenes. I was much more interested in knowing that their relationship is continuing in a good direction, and what was going to happen to everyone, rather than what, where and when they were doing each other.

Be warned – the ending is abrupt, as are all the books in this series, but I’m such a fan of this series that the ending just whetted my appetite for the next book. This is a really entertaining series. I found myself laughing out loud at several points, which earned me some interesting glances from people at my gym. I can’t say enough good things about this series in general, and this book in particular.

Let me start by saying I LOVE this series! It's the perfect blend of mystery, romance and shot of paranormal thrown in for good measure !I'm still in shock with the ending of this book and all the information we learned about Violet and her crazy crew! Like the other books in this series it takes place in Deadwood South Dakota.Once again poor Violet stumbles into another mystery surrounding a dead body.Only this time she's with Harvey and Natalie. Enter Detective Cooper with all his grumbling and snarling,...followed by the one and only arrogant Detective Stone Hawk. Not only is Hawk trying to hang Violet for every crime committed, he thinks she is a witch and tries his best to find a way to prove it. He also manages to keep making Cooper look bad..could this lead Cooper to snap? While Violet is trying to solve this murder to keep from getting blamed for it,she also has to sell real estate and her boss Jerry has decided that she and Ben need to do TV spots in known haunted buildings and homes to sell paranormal realty. If that isn't enough going on Violet has another encounter with Prudence that reveals the connection between the two of them. There are lots of steamy and hilarious scenes with Doc and Violet as their relationship evolves. Aunt Zoe reveals Violets true destiny and family secrets that involve both of Violets children as well. Cornelius is also along for the ride as are many other crazy and creepy and downright scary characters. So if you want a book that takes off and won't let you go, look no further!! I highly recommend this and all other books by Ann Charles

As with a bag of Lay’s potato chips where you can’t eat just one, with Ann Charles’ books you can’t read just one page! I can always be sure of a few things when I start one of the books in the Deadwood series, I will lose sleep, Violet and the great cast of characters that I so love will keep me laughing with their fun banter that only Ann Charles can so entertainingly create, and I will finish the story much too fast!
Mean While Back in Deadwood was no exception! With Violet once again getting caught up in another dead body caper and Detective “Coop” Cooper breathing down her neck and now also Detective Hawke, Violet must once again look for clues as to what is going on in order to keep herself and her son safe. Along with her trusty sidekick and best friend Natalie and the rest of the gang…Harvey, Doc and Cornelius, Violet sets out to find the killer and along the way finds out some interesting information about herself and her ancestors from her Aunt Zoe and her ghostly friend Prudence! If you love this series, you are going to go absolutely hog wild for this latest adventure in Violet’s world where things are always hectic and crazy. Yes…Ann Charles has hit another home run with Mean While back in Deadwood and I think this is my favorite story so far but of course I say that after every book I read of this multi-talented author who can spin a yarn out of the top of her head! Thank you Ann for another exciting and fun story involving some of my favorite people! You ROCK!!!

Another 5 star book from Ann Charles. I just adore the characters in this series, especially Old Man Harvey. He reminds me of a lot of the dirty old men I have known. This book gets down to some nitty gritty answers that have been teased in the last few books. Those answers were well worth the wait. This series just keeps getting better and better. I also love the world building of this series. The story is set in historic Deadwood, which is the perfect place for paranormal activity considering it's violent past. I love how there is kind of an interplay between that past and the plot of these stories. Deadwood was a random outpost on the distant horizon of the US. These stories incorporate distant spirit realms and dimensions that would seem as far away to modern Americans as Deadwood was when it first appeared as a mining town. I am on pins and needles to find out what is next for Violet and the gang. Which is really bad since the book just came out an hour ago.

Wow! This is the best Deadwood book in the series! Violet, Doc, Natalie, Cooper, Harvey, & Aunt Zoe are back & things are coming to a head in Deadwood. The romance between Violet & Doc is growing & Violet's sense of humor kept me laughing through the whole book. I feel like this is a pivotal book in the series because it answers so many questions that Ann Charles laid down in all of the earlier books. In books 1-5 she lays down these seemingly unrelated threads in the story that just adds to the mystery & you begin to wonder if you'll EVER get answers to what is going on. Then, in Meanwhile, Back in Deadwood, Ms. Charles takes all of those threads & effortlessly weaves them together to tie up the loose ends that she left in earlier books. I highly recommend this entire series. All of the books are very good & are very well written but with #6 things are REALLY starting to get good!!

Spookiest one yet

Come visit Deadwood, South Dakota, where there seems to be an unusually high number of ghost tales, and haunted locations.

All Violet Parker wants to do is sell some real estate to support her twins, learn more about her sweet and sexy love interest Dane (Doc) Nyce, and live a quiet, normal life. Unfortunately, she seems to be very attractive to spirits and otherworldly beings. She finds them wherever she goes -- or maybe they are finding her. Bodies (and body parts) keep turning up. Violet's self-proclaimed bodyguard, Old Man Willis Harvey brings a lot of humor to the story, as Violet's twins, her friend Natalie Beals, and non-ghostie-beiiever Detective Cooper.

Fun and mayhem in this one. You don't have to have read the others in this series to enjoy this book, but I heartily recommend them. They are all laugh-out-loud funny.

I’ve read all of Ann Charles’ books and I’ve never had a complaint about any of them and this one follows suit. I don’t know how she can write so many books and not have one bad egg in the bunch. You can pick up any of her books and be riveted to your seat until she decides to write The End. This book with all of the craziness of Violet and her friends and family and of course, don’t forget Elvis, makes for an enjoyable and surprising read. Plenty of plot twists and character building that you didn’t expect. If you are on the fence about if you should buy this book or not you will be doing yourself a big favor if you buy it. I’m looking forward to her next book.

Ann Charles has done it again. Meanwhile Back In Deadwood is the 6th book of the Deadwood Mysterys series and it is wonderful. As usual in my review I will not write a synopsis of the story. I received a copy as a beta reader from Ann Charles herself in exchange for an honest review. Honestly this book was well worth the wait. The characters are well rounded and developed. The plot is exciting and complicated , but not to much so, and has enough twist and turns you can't put it down. If you haven't taken the time to check out this awesome series you need too. You will enjoy an exciting relaxing read full of humor, murder, family, a little paranormal, and a touch of romance.

I really enjoyed this book, latest in an on going series. I love how she iis tying things together. You don't have to read them in order - Anne does an excellent job of keeping everyone on the same page while still moving the story along.

I really enjoy the characters and like that she does not have a lot of useless characters as page fodder. Nothing is more confusing that a lot of names that go no where. It's a great story line and you can tell she is loving every minute of this adventure she is sharing with us.

It is well edited, I enjoy that as well. No distractions from misspelled words.

Ann Knocks It Out of the Park Again!

This is not your usual paranormal novel. No vampires, weres, or dragons, just "others". Sometimes it's a story of how a single mom of twins struggles to make a living, raise her kids, & deal with her love life. Then you twist in that her boyfriend is a ghost channeler, the town is haunted, & Violet herself is a "killer/slayer" of "others." This book has humor, romance, & a creep factor. A captivating read!!! Each book in the series keeps building the suspense of what's to come next. Can't wait to see what comes next to Deadwood.

Hang on to you hat

Ann Charles has done it again with her latest installment of the Deadwood series. You'll not be able to put this book down until you come to the last page, and then you'll be waiting with the rest of the Purple Door Saloon gang for the next book. Humorous, intelligent, fun - Ann Charles delivers a tale worth your time to read it with her tight prose, character development and natural dialogue. Learn more about Doc. And what's that secret Aunt Zoe's got to tell Violet?

I love this series. Violet, Doc, Coop, Harvey and Natalie are amazing characters that you just have to root for. Of course, Violet is the lead character and is always in some type of hot water. She just wants to be a mom and raise her kids in peace, but . . . paranormal activities just have to keep knocking on her door. This story is full of love, humor and crazy adventures.

I am really looking forward to more of their adventures.
