About the author
Anjali Pathak
10 booksI’m Anjali Pathak. My love for food and cooking started when I was super young, probably around the time my senses came alive. I grew up in a home filled with spice aromas and my love affair for Indian food began.
I spent my childhood in the kitchen and was lucky to have been exposed to all sorts of exotic ingredients that my mum and grandma were experimenting with. It was only a matter of time before I learnt the tricks of the trade. Growing up in the foodie family that popularised Indian food across the world, I discovered my passion for cooking and I love playing with different flavours and aromas to see how they can liven up our senses.
Being born in Britain I have had to teach myself a lot about the culture and the cuisine. I learnt most of what I know about Indian cooking from my family and professional Indian chefs across the world. I have travelled around most of India (well as much as I can) trying to absorb the nuances of regional cuisines but there is still so much to learn so I go back regularly. For me this does not just relate to Indian cuisine, but to cooking in general, and so I decided to study at Leiths School of Food and Wine in London. It was some of the toughest few months of my life, but by far the best! I worked with flavours all day long and got some excellent teaching which would be too boring to read in a text book. Some may say what does an Indian chef need to learn British and French cooking for?! But I love bridging the gap between traditional Indian and contemporary International cuisine. That is what this website is all about. A collection of my foodie thoughts and recipes to match. Spices are some of the most exciting ingredients to work with and when you have mastered the basics, all you need to do is practice and find what you like best. All my recipes are foundational and so use them as a template to create your own dishes for your own tastes. After all, isn’t that what cooking is all about? Having fun in the kitchen and trying not to lose control!
I am always thinking of new recipes which I will add onto the site so keep checking back regularly for some culinary inspiration.

This work discusses many aspects of modern Indian food providing numerous recipes. There are many color photos and sidebars. The spices and seasonings used are also discussed. A good addition for the cook who wants to explore the world in their own kitchen.

For anyone wanting to explore Indian cooking but not sure about the complexity, this is a great book to have. Combining a mix of traditional, modern and western recipes and easy to follow steps, I found this a great book for the collection.

nice pictures and layout - perhaps a more global and urban approach to Indian cooking which I do not connect to - I want to go back to comfort food of my childhood.

I tried the biryani, which was a bit of an abbreviated version from ones I've made. It turned up a bit short, soupy and bland. I'll go back to my big, involved biryanis.

Whether you are a lover of Indian Cuisine or unfamiliar with it's exquisite flavors, this book will have you craving these foods in no time!
I was first introduced to Indian cuisine while living in South Africa. I can see you scratching your head in confusion. South Africa's cuisine has a very large Indian influence. My roommate cooked with curry ALL the time! She would say "That is enough curry." And would then proceed to pour the rest of the packet into the pot. I couldn't be more grateful to her though (even if I was crying through my meal because of the heat)! Because out of that, a deep love for Indian cuisine was born. Curry is my number one comfort food. I got my husband hooked on it as well, and let me tell you, he makes AMAZING curry! A few years ago, we had the great honor of meeting a Pastor who grew up in India. And he gave us hands on cooking lessons in REAL Indian cuisine! So when I saw The Indian Family Kitchen, I knew I had to have it!
I love the design and format of this cook book. Very pleasing to the eye and the pictures are purely tantalizing! In the "Introduction" Anjali shares her heart about her family and her love for cooking. It was very touching! Anjali intros each of the recipes and the directions are easy to follow. On quite a few of the recipes you will find "My Secret" stamp, Anjali divulges her key to making the dish to perfection.Throughout the book you will find a few of her favorite recipes that are, not exactly Indian, but tasty nonetheless! There are also a number of pages with pictures of her family, and this adds a very personal touch. Along with starters, main courses and BBQ Indian Summer chapters, you will find sides, desserts and cocktails. Anjali is not afraid to give away her tips and tricks in the kitchen. Scattered throughout you will find her Pantry must-haves, Magical chiles, Kitchen shortcuts, Wine & spice, and more! Overall I am extremely impressed with this cookbook! This one will be on my counter and used often. Now excuse me while I go and bask in the deliciousness of Indian cuisine!

My experience with Indian cooking is primarily made up of Curry nights every Sunday with my dad, and the occasional outing to a local Indian restaurant. When I moved out and made a home with my husband, I started branching out--making Chicken Korma, coming to terms with the fact that Tikka Masala wasn't even made by Indians, and a great number of experiments with spices and ramen.
What I love about this book in particular is the way Pathak introduces Indian Cooking as a process, not a formula. She leaves helpful stamps on each recipe that advise whether you should substitute or leave out an ingredient you don't have.
She starts the book with the important points: cooking is about intuition and improvising. The secret to good cooking is a good pantry (which was proved by my ramen-noodle experiments)
For anyone wanting to explore Indian cooking but not sure about the complexity, this is a great book to have. It's a great addition, even, for people who want to cook Indian but live in an area where 'Asian' means 'Japanese' and have to scour every corner of their city for ingredients sometimes. *ahem* But, anyway....
Buy this book and try something out. If you're cooking according to what you have, there's a helpful index in the back that you can use to locate pages of recipes for lamb, pork, chicken, etc. My advice: if you have someone sharing dinner with you, don't cook alone. Indian cooking is best done as a family affair.

The Indian Family Kitchen: Classic Dishes for a New Generation
I cannot even count how many Indian recipe books I have collected over the years but I can assure you it is over 10. I love to cook and Indian cuisine has long held my admiration interest! Not only is the food typically delicious and full of distinct flavours, it is also healthy!
I was excited to read this new cookbook from one of my favourite cookbook publishers! And I was not disappointed! From the unusually beautiful cover to the finish, this cookbook awed and inspired me! The pictures are absolutely stunning and the recipes are amazingly delicious! Even though I have so many other Indian cookbooks, this one will become a favourite! The recipes implement all the favourite traditional flavours and foods but with just enough update that each recipe is unique and worth trying!
I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.
