The fourth hexciting book in Suzanne Selfors' Ever After High: A School Story series.
Keeping up evil appearances is hexhausting work for Faybelle Thorn. But as the daughter of the legendary Dark Fairy, it's all part of her story. So when Justine Dancer is looking for a fairy to audition for a part in her new play, Faybelle's not interested...until she finds out the role is that of a wicked fairy queen. It's the role of Faybelle was born to play, and there's no way she's going to wait in the wings and let some other fairy play it! Faybelle soon finds out that she's actually got some pretty stiff competition for the part, so she resorts to drastic measures to land it: dark magic. But when her dark magic spell is an epic fairy fail, it's up to Faybelle to do the fight thing...What's a dark fairy to do?

I was volunteering at the library in the children's section and I always keep an eye out for certain authors like Soman Chainani and Suzanne Selfors. They didn't have the Ever Never Handbook, but there were 2 Ever After High books that I had not read yet. Hexcellent!

Fairy's Got Talent features two lesser known flying fairies named Faybelle Thorn and Farrah Goodfairy who compete for the role of a dark fairy in Justine Dancer's new play. Faybelle is the daughter of the Dark Fairy who cursed Sleeping Beauty and Farrah is the daughter of the Cinderella's Fairy Godmother. It was refreshing to see two fairy tale characters who hadn't been mentioned too often get their own story.

Faybelle Thorn has been perceived as a villain in the television show, but I personally think all the fables are redeemable. They are all just so adorable and I just want to squeeze their cheeks. Despite her villainous heritage, Faybelle is an ambitious and bright fairy who just wants to make her mother proud. Sure she had her diva moments, but ultimately she learned some great lessons from Baba Yaga because Faybelle is in charge of her own destiny rather than the Storybook of Legends.

Farrah Goodfairy unfortunately didn't have much depth and seemed to be a carbon copy of Apple White's blank do-gooder vibe. She didn't seem to have any apparent flaws other than her magic always ends at midnight. She was a formulaic foil to Faybelle but lacked her opponents's fire and likability (at least for me).

Bonus Shoutout
Bunny Blanc

Faybelle Thorn's roommate was Bunny Blanc, the daughter of the White Rabbit. I thought she was pixie perfect in the show and her charm translated well to the books. She munched on carrots and forgot to throw them in the garbage. She and Faybelle got along well and only argued over her messiness. I love that they gender-swapped Alice and the White Rabbit with Alistair and Bunny. They are so sweet and I need more storylines with them now!

Nina Thumbell
Nina Thumbell is the daughter of Thumbelina and is a member of the Cheer Hexing team. She was only mentioned a handful of times but I'm glad she was introduced. The Thumbelina film features one of my favorite soundtracks and it was a nice surprise to read her name. Plus she's a cute POC character in the Ever After High universe. Points for diversity in children's fiction!

My darling Goldie Lockes was mentioned throughout the books and gave all the updates for the play via her MirrorCast show, Just Right. She can be bossy and a bit of a muckraker, but she's my homegirl and I love her unapologetically. Despite her sneaky journalism, she's always there for her friends for a shoulder to cry on or a lock to pick. Stay tuned for another magical review from Goldilocks Reads.

I'm very meh about this one. It's not bad, there's just not a lot of substance. I miss the depth of the Shanon Hale books.

Fairy’s Got Talent: Ever After High (Updated)
Chapter 1: (Wings and Things) Faybelle’s roommate Bunny has a bad habit of dropping her veggie’s all over the room. So, Faybelle gives her a scare by levitating the beds. She apologizes and rushes off claiming to be late for a very important date. After this, Faybelle gathers her things, sprays her wings, and heads out.

Chapter 2: (A Fairy Fitting) In a flashback, a young Faybelle is excited to find her wings have grown. The Dark Fairy takes her to Fairy Town for a fitting for new glthes. The people of Fairy Town all stare when the Dark Fairy arrives. In the shop, Faybelle comes across a blue haired fairy and she tells her (her) wings grew. The girl says hers did too. Faybelle learns from the Dark Fairy the girl is a fairy godmother and is of no importance because they have limited powers. They’re servents to their magic where they (dark fairies) serve no one.

Chapter 3: (Pyramid Practice) When Faybelle gets to cheer practice six of the cheer hexers are already there. The others Hunter, Holly, Nina, and Farrah are late. Faybelle tells them that they’ll be trying to master an inverted pyramid for regionals coming up. Some have concerns about the safety, but Faybelle brushes this off. Justine Dancer tells them she’s holding auditions for a play she wrote. Faybelle tells her they’ll be too busy. But Justine says they need someone who can really fly to play the wicked fairy queen and Farrah says she’ll audition -and do costumes-. Faybelle (sure that this role is hers) signs her name bigger and adds an exclamation mark.

Chapter 4: (The Cheer-Factor)
Baba Yaga gives the assignment in Magicology to help the cleaning fairies out by fixing some broken tea cups. Farrah and Raven are paired together and got a lot of attention because Farrah makes her tea cups dance. Farrah then uses her “Cheer Factor” which strengthens her spell. Only it back fires and the cups grow and explode. Gingerbread’s finger gets pricked and her dress torn. Faybelle tells her she’s not hexed. Farrah fixes her dress. Baba Yaga tells Faybelle to clean up and stay after class.

Chapter 5: (A Bit of Advice)
Baby Yaga brings up the fact that she’s noticed Faybelle hates Raven and she explains its because she’s rejected her evil destiny. Faybelle expresses her desire to but the next Evil Queen if Raven rejects the role. Baba Yaga commends her because so many are giving up on their fairy tale legacies. Baba Yaga asks why she doesn’t like Farrah and Faybelle says she’s annoying and her magic is superficial. Baba Yaga asks if she wants to be loved like Farrah and she responds that villains don’t need love. Baby Yaga fails (she didn’t fix the teacups and she didn’t scare anyone intentionally), but tells her she has potential but she needs to go more slowly. She tells her impatience might be her downfall but she needs to be more careful. Faybelle only hears that one day she’s destined to be more powerful.

Chapter 6: (A Perky Prediction)
Faybelle catches an episode of Blondie’s Mirror Cast. She’s interviewing Justine Dancer and asks who she thinks will be better in the role. Justine says her opinion will be based on what she sees at the audition. She believes that even if you are evil it might not be as easy to *act* the part. Blondie holds a live poll and the students favor Farrah. Faybelle runs into Farrah picking up her dog (Spindle) at the day care center. Farrah is picking up her mouse (Clydesbale). Farrah tries to talk to Farrah but she keeps giving her the silent treatment. Then Farrah asks if Faybelle’s memorized her monologue yet. Faybelle didn’t know she was supposed to give one and is annoyed to learn that she has to do this along with all the other things she’s involved with. Farrah offers to help her. Faybelle realizes this might be good to check out the competition and agrees to let her help.

Chapter 7: (Light and Dark)
When she’s younger, Faybelle meets Ginger and her mother -the Candy Witch-. Ginger assures her that her mother doesn’t eat children. Faybelle asks her mother why she doesn’t look like a villain. Her mother tells her why should they shroud themselves in black capes and black hats and cling to the night. She tells her to embrace the light and never live in the shadows.

Chapter 8: (An Abundance of Blue)
In Farrah’s room, Faybelle notices immediately that she and Justine have gone to a lot of parties together. Farrah says that won’t influence who the role goes too. Faybelle asks Farrah if she saw *her* at any of those parties. She explains that its not because she isn’t liked. It’s because of the curse. Farrah doesn’t know what to day and says she’s sorry. Faybelle has a book on her desk called “Does Everything Have to End At Midnight”. When asked about it, she says she reads it to remind her to be grateful that even if it’s just temporary she’s able to help someone. Faybelle is surprised at how good Farrah’s reading of her mother is. She tells her she’s going to do the same monologue before she abruptly leaves. Farrah thinks this is a good idea.

Chapter 9: (The Vault of Lost Tales)
Faybelle decides to go to the Vault of Lost tells to find a spell to use on Farrah that can’t be traced back to her. While she’s there, she runs into Raven looking for information why her good spells keep back firing. Faybelle tells her duh. Your evil. Raven asks Faybelle if she’s ever wanted to go off script and she says no. Even tho she knows that’s a lie since she’d like to be the Evil Queen. Raven tells her she doesn’t have to hate her. Faybelle finds a spell called the Wilted Wing Spell which will wilt the victims wings until the moon passes.

Chapter 10: (A Deed Most Devious)
At the auditions, Faybelle instructs her fan club to cheer but just for her. Justine announces there will be someone else auditioning for the Evil Fairy Queen. Because her spell was just for Farrah, Faybelle cheerhexes the spell to increase its power. Not long after she hears a scream from inside the Charmitorium.

Chapter 11 (Wilted Wings)
When she goes back into the Charmitorium, Farrah tries to act innocent. Not only do Farrah and the other two first years wings not work, but the six cheerhexrs don’t either. She’s sabotaged the squad’s chances at regionals. Someone suggests it might be a virus. Faybelle makes the mistake of acting impatient to get back to the auditions. The other fairies ask why her wings weren’t affected. She says because she’s a dark fairy she has a stronger immune system and they don’t question this. Daring takes the others to the infirmary. Faybelle auditions and more of the audience cheer her but some aren’t sure. She asks when rehersals are and Justine says there’s someone else auditioning. Faybelle questions this because all the fairies are gone. She says it doesn’t have to be a fairy. Just someone who can fly. Then C.A. Cupid comes out on stage.

Chapter 12: Greek Tragedy
Faybelle is furious and takes a seat at the back of the auditorium. She doesn’t even realize that Cupid is just ok. Justine says they’ll break and then continue the rest of the auditions. Faybelle demands to know who the Evil Queen will be. Justine says she’ll post the call backs tomorrow and wants to wait and wants to wait and see if Farrah gets better so she’ll still have a chance. Faybelle wants to put a hole in the seat in front of her to let out some frustration but there are still remnants from the Wilted Wing Spell on her fingers so the magic ricochets and hits her in the chest. Now Faybelle’s wings won’t work.

Chapter 13 (Flight Grounded)
Headmaster Grimm orders that Cupid and Faybelle go to the infirmary to get checked out. Cupid notices that Faybelle’s wings look different but Faybelle says she’s just tired from staying up practicing her monologue. Faybelle asks Cupid what makes her think she can play this part better and Cupid says she’d never think that. Justine just told her she needed someone who could fly. She really doesn’t care what part she gets. Faybelle says then she should drop out. Cupid says she doesn’t want to. Theatre is a big tradion back home but the stories she prefers are love stories not tragedies. Faybelle says she doesn’t have time for stories and Cupid says she always seems busy but not happy. Faybelle responds she’s not supposed to be. She’s a villain. Cupid brings up missing something in her life like love and Faybelle dismisses the idea. She says love makes you weak and distracts you from the important things. Cupid says love *is* an important thing. They see Hunter and Ashlynn and Faybelle asks to borrow his cloak.

Chapter 14: Boiling Blood
Baba Yaga samples Cupid’s blood with a green powder. She demonstrates that her wings are not affected and she is dismissed. Baba Yaga then talks to Faybelle in private. She already knows her sings are damaged. She asks if there’s something she wants to do her but Faybelle plays dumb. She reminds Faybelle of the advice she gave her earlier and lectures her for attacking the fairies and Faybelle quickly answers she didn’t. Baba Yaga confirms that the spell will wear off in a moon’s span and forbides her from using magic until the fairies are back to normal. Faybelle says she did it to get the role but Baba Yaga tells her that sometimes magic isn’t necessary and that she lost the role and going to the regions.

Chapter 15: Dark Fairy Discussion
Justine reports that if neither of the fairies get better the role will go to Cupid. The Dark Fairy calls and wants to send her driver to pick Faybelle up right away. Faybelle says she can’t go home or she’ll fall behind. The Dark Fairy says she needs to heal at home and thinks someone attacked her with dark magic. Faybelle tho insists she can fight her own battles. It seems like for a minute, the Dark Fairy suspects what really happened but tells Faybelle ok but if she needs her she’ll fly there in a hurry.

Chapter 16: A Golden Opportunity
At lunch, the cheerhexers aren’t their usual hyper selves. Faybelle tells them tho that they need to come up with a way to get Cupid to quit the play without using magic. Cupid invites herself to have lunch with Faybelle. She tells her that she thinks Faybelle needs more love in her life and Faybelle threatens that she’d better not shoot her with one of her arrows. Cupid says she wouldn’t. They talk about her arrows. Briar and Apple call Cupid over and ask her to help them cheer up Farrah. Cupid rushes off and forgets her quiver and bow.

Chapter 17: Twinkle Toes
Faybelle finds the cheer hexers exhausted. They haven’t come up with a plan. Faybelle has a plan and that’s to shoot Cupid in the foot with one of her own arrows. So, they find Cupid in the barn with her Peggasus. The six fairies pretend to adore her shoes and she takes one off so they can try it on. Humphrey wants to talk to Cupid. So, she excuses herself. He asks Cupid to help him get a date so Justin will consider him for the part of the forgetful prince. Faybelle shots but Peggy throws off her aim.

Chapter 18: Humphrey the Hunk?
One by one Faybelle hits the cheer hexers trying to hit Cupid and they all start to come on to Humphrey. Three are hit. Then the other three join in and spells start flying. Humphrey runs off, and the six fairies chase after him. Faybelle aims for Cupid again but she turns around and sees her with her bow and thanks her for bringing it back. Hunter stops her on the way back to practice, but she tells him the other cheer hexers aren’t coming and she doesn’t know when they will be back to normal. They’ll have to forfeit. Farrah stops her and tells her she believes Faybelle can fix it. Faybelle knows she’ll need ot help.

Chapter 19: A Dark Confession
Faybelle confesses everything to Baba Yaga tearfully. She tells her that she had a had a student that has accidently stolen her own voice and it was the Dark Fairy. She says she had to find out what was really important to her and concentrate on that and stop trying to do things to make her look like she wanted others to see her. Faybelle says she wanted everyone to see her in the role of the wicked fairy queen, but Baba Yaga says they already do. Faybelle confesses that none of the fairies deserves wileted wings not even Farrash and says that she wishes she never casted the spell. Baba Yaga tells her there’s no shame in feeling and that she thinks she would have gotten the role without magic. Unfortunately, there’s no way tho to undo the spell.

Chapter 20: Pyramid Perfection
She is able to undo the spell on the other fairies and they start to practice the inverted pyramind. Farrah asks Faybelle about her wings and she removes her cape and says it takes dark fairies longer to heal since they have complex wing structure. By the end of practice, they’ve perfected the formation.

Chapter 21: Curtain Call
Faybelle admits (to herself) that she enjoyed the show. Although the chooses were weird. Humprhey was the prince. Ashlyn was the princess. Fairy was the evil queen. Farrah asks what she thought and she says it’s better than she thought. Farrah says the only reason she was picked was picked Faybelle didn’t heal in time. Faybelle says that’s ok. She gets to play the role for the rest of her life and flies off.

My Thoughts:
I don’t know these people? I have NEVER EVER heard of a villain wanting to wear WHITE! SHIMMERING WHITE! And I honestly don't know what to do with that image. It does make you think a little bit that good & evil aren't all black and white. Like there's some evil in good people and good in evil people. BUT this just isn't the way we've seen Maleficent. Although if you watch the recent version she starts "off" as good. If you watch ONCE the "dark fairy" starts off as good. But white? How about gray?

Then there's Baba Yaga. SO DIFFERENT! Read the Grimm Fairy Tales(comic) if you want an illustration of what I mean. That Baba Yaga is FIERCE! She eats children. She has horsemen. She will rip you to SHREDS in a heartbeat. And then hang your skull on her fence for decoration. Who is this watered down, imposter? That sits on her pillow & gives advice about using dark magic in a wasteful way.

Faybelle might have been "sloppy" with her magic but her intention CLEARLY was mean-spirited. Doesn't that equal EVIL? It was also vindictive. Again EVIL! Having wilted wings caused pain and physical exhaustion. For a kid's book, this is about as evil as you can push it. The Grimm version Baba Yaga probably would have wanted all the competition blown up to fairy dust if she were the professor. She would have probably given Faybelle at the least a low B. I don't even know why this Baba Yaga IS the evil advisor. She's a decent advisor but Raven's mom would make a WAY better evil advisor. At least she not only talks the talk she WALKS it. This lady KNOWS her role in all this.

Faybelle had some good ideas. It was just the execution that was poor. Baba Yaga should have added to think her plots out more carefully. Which would have sounded better than be more careful. But what I had problems with (with) Faybelle is that we don’t need another Raven Queen. We don’t need a half and half character. If Faybelle wants to be the Evil Queen she’s seen the Evil Queen and you have to “COMMIT” if *that’s* who you wanna be. All through the story she says that’s what she wants but… I’m not even sure if Faybelle has what it takes -reading this- to be what she thinks she wants to be.

Rating: 6 This one was weird because of all the character differences.

The daughter of the dark fairy is captain of the cheer team, president of the villain club, and is an all A student. This fairy has all that she needs for her future as the next dark fairy. Then she's told their is a play, and only fairy's can the main role. She says no until she hears it's the role of the dark fairy. It's the role she's been born to play. She does whatever it takes to get the part including casting a curse that affects the enemy. It spreads to every fairy in the room, even her cheerhexers. She's made a huge mistake, and then she affects herself as well. What will she do now.

Keeping up evil appearances is exhausting work for Faybelle Thorn. But as the daughter of the legendary Dark Fairy, it's all part of her story. Time to take center stage as the main character in a school play to show everyone she can so do 'the evil thing'.

This book features two fairies named Faybelle Thorn and Farrah Goodfairy who compete for the role of the dark fairy. Farrah is the daughter of the Cinderella's Fairy Godmother. Faybelle is an ambitious and bright, who just wants to make her mother proud. I could see myself liking Farrah if only she had more of a character because if she's kept the way she is at the moment she's going to be another copy of Apple White, (who I dislike).

Stray thoughts:
-Two of my favorite things about this series are when it adds details or explanation to the whole destiny plotline (like how parentage works) and when new characters that I can't wait to hear more about in the future (lookin' at YOU Little Mermaid's daughter!!!) are introduced. Also seeing royals and rebels comparing each other's stories and bonding over certain elements or being jealous of each other's stories.
-Keeping classic Fairy-twisted phrases like "Hocus Focus"--oh, yes!
-I was really surprised with Farrah's whole blue theme that they didn't introduce her as the fairy from Cinderella AND Cedar's story...

Faybelle is trying really hard to be be wicked but unfortunately isn't that competent. Thankfully a strong relationship with her mum and advice from Baba Yaga help to save the day.

I feel like this series is aged down from Middle Grade to Chapter Book? It isn't dealing with as big of themes anymore. Mostly I keep reading to check up on what's going on with people from other books. And because I can get through a book in like, 40 minutes.

The challenge here was to write from a villain's p.o.v. while keeping the character sympathetic. Selfors manages it brilliantly, maintaining a limit to how dark Faybelle gets with her magic, and keeping it child-friendly.

Faybelle is a great villain. I'm loving that Ever After High is keeping her a Royal and a villain so far, but still manages to make her likeable and not TOO evil.

The book Fairy's Got Talent by Suzanne Selfors was a REALLY good book. This book is about 2 faries named Faybelle and Farrah. Faybelle hears about a role in a play, but just ignore it until she finds out tat the part in the play is an evil fairy queen. Then at that point Faybelle wants to play the role in the play. Faybelle go to the audition, but realizes she isn't the only one with talent. Faybelle decides to cheat and use a spell to make herself get the part. Read the book if you want to see what happens next. I would defiantly recommend this book if you are looking for a good book to read right now.

This one took me the longest to read, but it’s because I just really can’t stand Faybelle. I think she’s annoying and she’s just mean. Like yeah I get it, you’re supposed to be a villain, but Jesus you don’t have to be like this in High School. You’ll get your time. Plus the only reason why she wanted to reverse the spell is because she didn’t get her way and it affected her. She didn’t really feel bad. I’m really glad she didn’t get her way. But nonetheless, I did enjoy reading this book. And on to the next one.

I really enjoyed this book. Faybelle was a really fun character, and I enjoyed reading about her. The plot was also fun and interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the Ever After High series, and I would recommend all the Ever After High books to anyone who enjoys reading fairytale books.

I thought the book was great! It was full of fun things, cool spells and things magic people can do, and most importantly, it passed a message. If you are interested in reading this book #ItIsGreat! So if you are, you should so read it! Also, for me it felt like I was magically transformed into the world of ever after high myself! Have fun!

If there’s one thing I can about being told to stay inside, is that my TBR shelf is shrinking faster than I can re-stock it, which I guess is a good thing. I can’t even remember when this was added to it, but it was cute. I can’t lie, sometimes you just need a light fun book. Can I remember anything about the other ones, nope but I’ll happily go read the next one.

This book was sweet. I love the backstory and character development of Faybelle. Though she’s destined to be evil, at the end of the book she understands the limits of what should and shouldn’t be done. I love the moral of the story: to do things for yourself, instead of what you want others to see you doing. And it’s ok to mess up because everyone does! You can learn from mistakes and what to do and what not to do in the future.

A part of life at "Ever After High" focusing on Faybelle Thorn. As typical of these stories, there are things that can be learned through the experiences of the main character. As the main character in this case is actually "evil", it's a bit more obvious but it is still enjoyable to read.

I love these books by Suzanne Selfors even though I am not the intended audience. This one finds a dark magic spell being used to get a part in a play. THEN everything goes wrong. Highly recommend this one.
