David VanDyke is a former Army Airborne soldier and later, an Air Force officer. He lives in the Tucson area with his wife and three dogs. Look him up at davidvandykeauthor.com
At last the reaper and the skull met. A coalition for the future of Humanity. The story was better now, the plot was more thrilling, though the secrets was no more.
Another very readable volume - here concentrating on Skull and Repeth as they attempt to rescue some thousands of Edens from Ethiopia. Working separately, Skull nominally under the guidance of Cassandra and Repeth's team under Spooky, and with a cameo from the Prince of Wales (not Charles but Richard, second son of a long-reigning Queen, the first suffering haemophilia) this is a globe-spanning narrative (South America, Israel, West Africa - and the QM2 has a role as well).
This book is the fourth in the series and is just as good as the first three. The series has a unique premise, interesting characters, and a lively, fast moving storyline.
This is book 3 even though there are 4 so far, regardless I have read them all and enjoyed them. This isn't a bad book, I simply didn't like it as much as the rest, a matter of personal opinion.
This one...errrm. Hmm. Wasn't exactly where I'd seen this series going, and went places I didn't care for. So, the Edens are proliferating and now there are several thousand Ethiopian ones in dire need of help. The Islamic Caliphate is leaning on the Ethiopian government to destroy these perceived infidels, and nearby Kenya is waffling on whether to provide them sanctuary. Our heroes, including Markis, Reaper, Spooky, Skull, and Zeke's wife Cassandra, must figure out a way to assist their brothers and sisters.
However, there's a lot that the good guys do that's not much different from the bad guys. Cassandra and Reaper dress and act sensually to elicit information. In a particularly weird scene, Spooky oversees the torture of a man's privates. Obviously there's things you need to be willing to do in war, but these guys are rather gratuitous. In comparison, Skull seems tame with his quick executions, lethal takedowns, and masterful sniper fire.
The Eden Plague's virtue effect is expounded on here; supposedly it doesn't make recipients good, but just magnifies the conscience already present. A mostly good person gets better and a sociopath becomes more evil, but most of our protagonists do some nasty things, "stay true to their consciences," and enjoy the healing powers.
It just sounds like the author got cold feet about having his heroes and heroines be "good" people. You do know you can be a Christian and be tough, right? God's prophet Elijah who killed 400 pagan priests? Ehud who assassinated the oppressing king? Abraham who armed his household and stormed an enemy camp to liberate his nephew?
This series so far has been awesome but after the direction of this one I'm not sure I'm continuing.
David VanDyke and Ryan King teamed up in a story so relevant to our times that it doesn't matter if you've never heard of the Eden Virus or the ensuing plague that infected the world's population - not with an apocalyptic devastation but one that embues new health and strength. For those who are not infected, the virus' side effects threaten their way of life, the world's economy and their struggle to remain in power. From Mossad to the UN to superpower nations - all are concerned how the "Edens", or those who carry the virus, will change the balance of power across the globe...even if the infected have no intention to do so.
I received this book as an ARC (advanced-read copy) for a favorable review. I have read the series from the very start and the authors were intuitive enough to give information to readers that this book is capable of being a standalone story.
Remaining true to the core characters, VanDyke and King paint a stimulating visual of the struggle for mankind to protect the things dear to them while caught in the chaos of persecution, politics, religious fanaticism and terror that often permeates our world.
A fabulous fast-paced read that I couldn't put down.
Having read and enjoyed the 3 books leading up to Eden's Exodus, there is no question in my mind that I would have bought this book if I had not received a free review copy in exchange for an honest review. The authors have done such a great job of reasoning out their "world" that I never found myself saying: "that doesn't make sense." Instead, I was able to enjoy the flow of the story, the interaction of the characters with their individual motivations and perspectives. I did not want to put it down, but I was forced by real life to finish it in two sittings instead of one. Thanks for a great read, David and Ryan.
In this episode, the Eden Virus is spreading with no way to contain it. Those who fear the virus are looking to eradicate all those infected, even those people who are better, kind, helpful, caring people. Daniel Markis provides help to the Free Communities (the infected) along with Spooky, Skull, and Reaper. But they soon find out someone will betray them. This episode follows "Skull's Shadows." A very well written team effort, extremely creative. It's a fast read and will spur up your heartbeat!
Fast paced and actin clacked, with well-plotted story lines and characters you can believe in. I love the premise on which the Eden "plague" is based, and the way this book makes us think about discrimination and political power. Not a bad one I the series so far! I am looking forward to reading the next...
I am very much enjoying this storyline and characters . Such an interesting take on the apocalypse. The Eden virus mimicking what a zombie virus but with the opposite effect.
I really like this series by David, it has a story that could happen and each book I read in this series is more compelling. The characters are well written. If you like stories about possible ending to our lives as we know it, read this series.
This restored my confidence in the Plague Wars series. Though the protagonist is still 'Skull', the story is well-told and exciting, involving the rescue of persecuted Edens from Ethiopia.
