Cassie Stories #1

Poisoned Pearls

Rate this book
Working at a sex & toy shop like Chinaman Joe’s Good Luck Parlor keeps Cassie in smokes and off the streets. It isn’t glamorous. But it’s a life.

Then again, Cassie is just normal, not one of the blessed. No paranormal abilities, no telepathy, no pre-cognition. Normal.

But when someone kills Cassie’s best friend in the alley behind the store, the police start looking at her. Hard. Particularly when the Post-Cog on the case swears she’s involved, somehow.

Then someone strangles a prostitute right there in the store.

Cassie knows the cops are wrong about everything. She didn’t do it, and the deaths aren’t about drugs.

But to prove them wrong Cassie has to stop the norse gods she didn’t know were real and prevent Ragnarok.

Her life will never be the same.

Mere mortals are left without much choice when the ancient gods decide to go to war. There are a few however that have a special gift. They can see either previous events, current events or past events. With this knowledge… is it a gift or a curse to know and see events and not be able to control the situation presented.

Cassie works in an adult sex and toy shop. She has seen it all, including her best friend dead in the alley behind the shop she works in. She’s the kind of girl not afraid to be herself, and have a variety of interesting friends. She is just doesn’t understand why her friend was killed, and others are dieing. She soon discovers that there is so much more going on than she was prepared for.

I must say that the story was interesting, but I still don’t know if I liked it. Cassie was a wonderful character. She really is unique. Not afraid to be sassy, sarcastic, gay, and independent. I truly enjoyed her.
As for the gods and war…intertwined with Cassie and the way her world is now, it stretched a bit to far for me. The story was well written. I just don’t think it was my kind of story.

The hype is real and warranted. You thought this was about the hum drum slice of life. Involving a desk clerk of a adult store. Thought you were going to get descriptions of naughty shenanigans and customers being escorted out of the shop in handcuffs for indecent exposure.

Cassie wishes that was so. Just a lonely employee of Chinaman Joe's Good Luck Parlor. Finds her best friend dead behind rhe store. With only her wit, natural talents, and a phone full of useful numbers. She must find the killer. Cause the cops think the first one to find the body, must have done the crime.

Worst fart joke ever! Especially when a trickster is shuffling a deck of fates cards.

My first thought upon finishing this book: Well, that was fun!

The prologue set me off balance, making me feel like I was reading three stories but very curious as to how they would come together.. and come together they do! This book is gritty and risque. Science, psychic abilities and Norse gods fit together like puzzle pieces with wisps of familial drama snuck in. I was curious about where the story was going and how they would meet and I was not disappointed.

Early on in the story we learn that our main character, Cassie, is a lesbian. As a lady lover myself I appreciated this attribute as well as how it plays out in the book. She’s crass, flirty, stands by her friends and gets things done that need doing. She’s a character that I can get behind, pun absolutely intended. Her situation in life isn't ideal but she doesn't complain about it and is happy for what she does have. I enjoyed how she interacted with the other characters in the book, all of whom I found entertaining.

There’s an element of government/private industry/military involvement with the psychic abilities here that I thought it was well played.

and that concludes all of the POSITIVE things that I have to say about Poisoned Pearls.. Now onto my criticisms!...

*stares at ceiling*looks from one side of ceiling to the other*makes fart noises with mouth*

ah.. Well, it looks as though I have none! Although I do feel that I should warn there are topics here that may make some people uncomfortable, drugs, sex, bad language. If these things are an issue for you then I wouldn't recommend delving into this very entertaining world.

Finally, here are a couple of quotes that I found extra amusing.

"Careful, or you'll lose an eye," I joked.

"I'd finally stopped and looked at the date--December twenty-first, the longest night of the year.
Normally, that was something I'd celebrate. All that extra loving time."

This is a hard-boiled fantasy with an appealing, tough heroine who manages to avoid the tiresome trend of being needlessly angry. Cassie has a lot of challenges -- living on the edge, working in a sex shop, mother issues, and now her best friend turns up murdered, and she's a suspect. Swept into the investigation, Cassie also has to grapple with her emerging psychic powers, and it's a fascinating juggling act. Add to that some creative elements of Nordic mythology intruding into "real life," and you have a lively, imaginative story with characters you care about.

Leah Cutter puts out another page turner. Bringing together the wars of the gods with the average world all leading up to the end times.

Cassie's friends are dying around her… and she can prevent it. All she has to do is admit that she has psychic abilities. Despite her struggle to remain mundane, eventually she must give in to her talents.

This was an excellent read!

I won this book via goodreads first reads giveaway.

This novel is about a strong underdog female protagonist. A remarkable woman with the strength to accept her orientation. Regardless of the rejection of her loved ones. As a result she becomes the only person with the ability to overcome her fate.

Leah cutter manages to weave in elements of paranormal powers and Viking mythology in such way that one becomes disappointed at the end of the novel.
