Considering that the names of Shel Silverstein, Ogden Nash, Edward Lear, and Jack Prelutsky fill the bylines of this booklet, this is really a great little booklet of poems for kids, grades 2 through 6.
This was a booklet given to classroom teachers & their students for meeting a specified order minimum.
Great poetry anthology for kids. Contains some fun poems by some of the more well-known comedic kid's poets. And some challenges and tips for aspiring poets as well.
Takes less than 20 minutes to read them all but a bored kid who honestly accepts the poetry challenges laid down may remember this book the rest of their lives.
I loved reading this growing up! It is super funny and interesting. Each poem is something that almost every child can relate to. I also enjoy that there is (usually) some kind of crazy illustration to go along with the poems. This book has a collection of short and "long" poems making it fun and interesting to read for children. I also I like how there are "poem pointers" throughout the book that can help spark a child's interest in writing poetry!
My Dog Does My Homework is a really cute collection of poetry! I love this book for students grades 2-5. This is a great way to introduce poetry to young students, because it gets them interested in discovering more. This collection of poetry is unique because it provides children with text from Shel Silverstein, William Cole, Jeff Moss and so many more! What a great introduction for new readers!
1. (None) 2. Kindergarten-Grade 2 3. “My Dog Does My Honework!” Is a collection of short poems written by many authors of children’s literature and others. 4. I like many of the poems in this book. They are short and easy to read for young children. Many rhyme, which children love to read. There is a list of poetry terms in the back of the book. 5. This would be a great example to use in a class when teaching about poems an rhyming.
This book is filled with poems by: William Cole, Paul Duggan, Douglas Florian, Frank Jacobs, X.J. Kennedy, Karla Kuskin, Edward Lear Colin McNaughton, Eve Merriam, Jeff Moss, Kenn Nesbitt, Ogden Nash, Louis Phillips, Jack Prelutsky Jon Scieszka, and Shel Silverstein
Plus, Poem Pointers to help you write your own poems!
When you put Shel Silverstein, Jack Prelutsky and Ogden Nash into a book of poems and add several other poets into the mix, you have a delightful book with poems for children as well as adults. When you finish this short laugh-out-loud book, you can only wish it were longer. Enjoy poetry -- it's not just for kids!
Some of these poems are funny or at least clever, but others seem pointless and some are even violent (I was surprised by how much killing there was). The poem writing prompts were a nice touch though.
Summary This book is an exclusive collection of poems by many different authors. Each poem can teach a child a lesson and keeps them interested because they are also very funny. There are also pictures on each page to help the children imagine what is going on with each poem. Response My favorite poem in the book is Poemsicle by Shel Silverstein(p.15). This poem is just very silly and will get the kids to think when they are reading the words because they are even tricky for adults to read. This story makes me feel like I can write all different kinds of poems and encourages me to start writing them. I also feel like it will encourage children to write any poem that comes to their mind no matter how silly they think it might be, which I think will benefit the children in their writing abilities. Classroom Connection Some writing strategies for this book would be having the children write their own poem. I would also want to discuss the different types of poems there are so that the children will be able to explore which one they would feel more comfortable to use in their poem. By analyzing some of the poems in the book this will also help the children start to think about poems differently. Lexile/ Guided Reading Level There is no information about the lexile or guided reading levels of this book, but I would imagine that it would be appropriate for grades k-2 as a read aloud and should be read independently by grade 3.
A wonderful collection of poems for kids! Slim volume packed with some of the heavy hitters in children's poetry like Shel Silverstein, Jack Prelutsky, Eve Merriam, and Douglas Florian. A glossary of poetry terms in the back of the book would make for a nice resource for each student in the room to have.
This book is short and you can finish it in less than 2 minutes so if you need a small, easy read book, get this one. This book is cool and funny-ish. lol
