Demonic Café Series #1

The Problem With Black Magic

Rate this book
Cassie Tremblay divides her time between working the cash register at her neighborhood coffee shop and studying to produce the grades to get into a top-tier university. Sam, a mysterious co-worker at The Daily Grind, seems to have taken an instant dislike to her, but for Cassie, the looming specter of the SAT Verbal section is a much bigger concern.
After a freak accident nearly leaves Cassie and her co-workers dead, a spell cast in desperation transforms her from a regular teen to a valuable familiar: a magical well a demon can tap. As if she didn’t have enough problems, now every demon (and their monstrous minions) seems to be after Cassie’s latent magic, and will stop at nothing to possess her.
Sam, now her “master” (loath as Cassie is to admit it) works to protect her, but she soon realizes the security bought by his barely controlled black magic comes at a terrible price. She would love nothing more than to earn her freedom for herself, but with no ability to cast spells of her own, how can she fight back against creatures that wield awesome powers beyond mortal comprehension?
Blending a hint of gothic romance with wry humor, The Problem with Black Magic is a YA-friendly novel that contains enough depth for genre fans of all ages. The first book of The Familiar Series, this is a tale of one young woman’s struggle for independence in a brand new world of sorcery, intrigue, and wonder.

2.5 stars, but I guess I’m feeling generous lately because I keep rounding up.

The story itself isn’t bad, but the writing is very amateurish. There are a lot of misused idioms, or almost idioms — where the author thinks she knows an expression, but it’s just a little off, like jerry rig when what’s meant is jury-rig. There were some other grammatical errors, such as improper sentence structure and word usage, which, combined with the misused idioms, serve to pull the reader out of the story. Also, if the author wants to include a romantic storyline, she really needs to work on the way she writes it, because as it stands, it’s awful. It’s an easy and quick read though, and the pacing is pretty good.

I received an Ebook from the author for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review, and all conclusions and words are honestly given and entirely my responsibility.

This book is best defined as a YA Paranormal, with a 16 year old girl, Cassie at the forefront of the action. Cassie is involved in all the ‘normal’ things one would expect of a teenager – she is a good student, works part time at a coffee shop, and has the usual amount of angst about boys, friends and her family. Until she is witness to a stoppage of time that is exactly 17 minutes and 34 seconds, and only she and the people who were present at the coffee shop that day know why.

Cassie is ‘normal’ in every sense of the word, and despises that fact. She always wanted to be special. Be careful what you wish for Cassie: with help from Sam, the barista at the coffee shop, you realize that you are magical, and far more valuable and “special” than you ever considered.

This was an incredibly fun read – I devoured it in one sitting. We meet demons who aren’t always just demonic, people who are more bad than good, and realize with Cassie that nothing is ever just black or white.

So often those of us who read paranormal stories are immersed in only the action of the story – without the conflict of character and morality that must exist. Karen Mead has done a wonderful job of showing the consequences of actions through Cassie’s never ending series of questions to any and all who may answer. We are given plausible reasons, or at least from a human standpoint, as to why having a new and pure ‘font of magic’ is a valuable and coveted treasure, and Cassie often struggles with the wish and desire to be ‘valuable and helpful’ with the sheer terror of the evil that surrounds her.

Characters are quite nicely developed on the whole. I did have issues with Sam’s sarcasm and dour demeanor, but think it is more a protective instinct, as he does warm up and open up slowly. I am sure that while he will never be Byronic and flowery in prose or action, he will develop and grow as the series continues. Cassie’s mother, however, is a fairly nasty piece of work, without great redeeming features and quite flat. Each time she enters the conversation – we already know she will be angry, dictatorial and rather flat. The friendships are believable, and there are gems of conversation that feels very real and current. I can see this book appealing to YA and adults alike, it’s that unique and clever of a take on the “demon, witch, familiar” storyline. As a first offering and the start of a series, it is quite satisfactory – and a great late summer, quick weekend to relax read.

Great teen story for adults too

This is a nice take on the paranormal, with the fae mentioned, demons present and angels referenced. The demons as a group get comfortably confusing and the broad range of personalities in their ranks makes a good story background.

The major characters are a fun group to be centered on a cafe. The town (or small city) is big enough to create the urban landscape and small enough to make travel across it easy for a teenage cast who don't own cars. The parents are realistically clueless and divorced from their children's real lives.

The witch at the heart of it all is the best part. The older characters are not much more adult than the teens, if at all. It's interesting to see preteens, teens, and twenty year olds interacting in high stress circumstances. I've not really read a group as diverse and it's nice to break up that monolithic teen culture into its constituent subcultures.

The issues of self-image for both boys and girls, the anti-parent feelings mirrored across the age groupings and the cross generational conflicts is well written. I imagine that the teenage girl with an adult body shape and unsure of her relative attractiveness, the confusion over sex and the rest is probably a perfect depiction of one type of teenager (a good example of what all teens are trying to sort out, I think).

The book would be appealing to preteens, teens, twenty something's and adults, I think. This could be a really good series.

Cassie is a 16-year-old girl who works at a coffee shop, The Daily Grind. One of her co-workers is the mysterious and annoying, Sam. The guy is always snapping at her and can barely stand her. One day, an earthquake occurs, and all hell breaks loose (ha!).

The Story:

It's interesting. The concept is familiar, but not overdone. I don't want to spoil, which is why I'm being so cryptic, but story does move along at an interesting pace with the revelations and questions. The writing was wonderful and intelligent and the flow was brisk. I finished the book in a few hours, so it definitely kept me turning those pages quickly.

The Romance:

Amazingly enough, there is NO insta-love. The attraction is there between the two characters but not enough that makes one rolls her eyes with constant descriptions of the hero's physique, strength, god-like looks, or how much in love the couple is with only knowing each for a few days (or something like that. I'm not really sure how long they've known each other...) Actually, the book could have used a little more of those, descriptions that is. (I kept forgetting how Sam and Cassie looked like, sadly.) The romance is very slooooow-building and has me excited for the sequel--if there is one; and since it is a series, I'm can safely assume there will be.

Overall:

It was a book with enough action, romance (and I say that lightly), paranormal elements, and suspense to whet the appetite for more. To be honest, MORE could have happened but the story was satisfying in how it flowed and ended. There were enough loose ends to make me want to go back for more...especially one kind of gross thing...REAL SPOILER, PEOPLE---->> that I'll let others comment and expand upon if they feel the need to. Will definitely recommend to other readers!

This was a very enjoyable read about Cassie and Sammael, who work in a coffee shop. She has never enjoyed any friendship from Sam, but she eventually finds out why when he stops time to prevent a building from falling during an earthquake. It comes to light that she is a very powerful white witch who demons covet and who will do anything to take her away from Sam, who was awarded the opportunity to train her at the Court hearing. There are further books in their story which I will certainly look out for

A teenage barista learns she has special supernatural powers and is strangely bound to her frustrating co-worker. cassie learns she is a witch and is bound to Sammael, her handsome co-worker. she learns to her dismay that she is a rarity coveted by demons. She is plunged into a world of mystery, terror and intrigue while trying to keep appearances like school, work and family , normal. She soon learns that it is easier said than done.

this is a cute enough story s long as you don't mind demons being portrayed as rather mischievous, likeable sorts. The supporting cast of characters including her friends, family and employers are fun. Cassie herself is okay, typical teen. I was annoyed by the cover. although I think it is great when they have a real person model the position she is in is awkward and weird. Not the best writing but overall a decent read.

The story moves fast and is a fun read with good character development. There is a different take on demons (not all bad, nasty things), which I enjoyed. Cassie’s friends were great, her dad was so so, her mom-wow- I wouldn’t want her for my mom; though I’m not sure why Cassie wasn’t grounded when she disobeyed (read the story to find out how). Not too many proofreading problems, but enough to knock the story from four stars to three.

Fresh story. Really enjoyed this. Interested to read more. Found this on Amazon as a free book. Although the FMC is a teenager she reads pretty much like all urban fantasy FMC these days but a bit more willing to try using her powers. I was expecting her parents to punish her far more and would have liked a better explanation of the fallout is my only complaint. Moving onto book two.

Demons and magic

The crew at the DC coffee shop become involved with demonic forces. The author provided some world building and character development. A fun descent read with some twists and turns and some more questions, so you'll need to get the next installment.

I received a free copy of this book as part of a read to review program in exchange for an honest review.

In this story, a high school student, Cassie, is working at a coffee shop for some extra spending money. Unfortunately, an earthquake hits the area and a building is about to collapse on top of the coffee shop (probably killing all inside.)

This is where we met Sammie, a (somewhat) disgruntled full time employee who stops time. He's also a half-demon. His magic works too well and he freezes a much larger space and now can't do anything on the building.

Luckily for them, humans have some magic and Cassie seems to have a ton. He makes her into a familiar and that's where the trouble begins.

This is a good book. I really enjoyed reading it.

My only complaints were these:

The beginning is just weird. Chapter one involved the night after the earthquake and Chapter two starts the night of the earthquake. I'm not certain the point of this. The earthquake was much more interesting then the news programs commenting on the lost time.

I wish there had been more action, subterfuge, and underlying plot. When the vamp's come in, I wish they had grabbed her and Sammie had rescued her. It might've been a good way to start that trust after what he did to her. Save for Sammie, the characters tended to be only good or only bad.

This was a good read, though.

4 stars!

I loved this book!

The majority of the plot takes place inside a coffee shop. But it isn't your typical coffee shop. Well It Is, but It's the people that make it different! Sound boring? It's not. Something is always happening in that place.

It was a light read more for young adults. But not something that wouldn't hold my intrest. The story moves fast and sucks you right In I couldn't put the book down. I liked the author's take on demons with familiars. I also liked how her magic worked, It wasn't so far-fetched. Some parts It was pretty vague, but Karen set the ground work for the first book. And has it asking yourself "What will she do with the next book?"
I laughed at the end! I tend to startle my husband when that happens. And It doesn't happen that often. But It caught me off guard, and I belted out with laughter! (Want to know why?) I LOVE It when books do that.

There was some minor mistakes that did have me pausing. But nothing that took away from the story.

I received a copy of this book through my group. I do not know the author. And these are my opinions. :)

This fast-paced young adult story is full of action, suspense and magic. I love a good story with magic! This one is filled with both black magic concerning demons and the white magic of witches. Add in a few vampires and its a great combination for a fun paranormal read. The characters really took on their personalities making them feel like real people. So much so that even as I was rooting for Cassie and Sam, I was also irritated with some of their decisions. But that only made me turn the pages faster to find out what happened to them next! I truly enjoyed reading this story, and I look forward to reading future books in this series. I would love to see the romance blossom between the main characters. Ms. Mead also has me intrigued with the secondary characters and how the future will play out for them. I only wish this story had been written in first person POV. For the most part this is Cassie's story, but I would have loved to see it completely through her eyes to add to the level of suspense.

The premise of the book was interesting, it was written in a nice way, the story flowed, and it moved at a steady pace. However, there was no stand out character who grabbed me. Cassie was just a character, she was not whiney, but just wasn't special. Added to this she was meant to be independent, but she let her parents boss her around. Sam did start off mysterious, but this was not really built on. I would have liked to have seen some kind of meaningful connection between Sam and Cassie, but I just did not feel one. They were just characters. The book felt like it leading to something and then it ended. Maybe the sequel will bring something more, but by that time I would not remember anything about this book as it has nothing special to remember it by. So although this book was easy to read, and the premise interesting, I know it is not one I will remember in a month.
Will I read it again? No

Time stop?! This book is a very fast paced boot about a girl named Cassie, who grows sick about hearing about the "time stop." At the time an average teenager working at a local coffee shop with a "T" totally hot coworker named Sam. Sam coincidentally is the the person who cause the time stop, being part demon. Sam uses Cassie for her latent power that every human has not knowing that she was destined to be so much more to save a falling building. Through many struggles we find out the Cassie is Sam's familiar and with training and demon essence added to her she can become a very powerful witch. I really loved this book, and I was sad to read the last sentence, I can't wait for a sequel to come out. The only really negative thing I found with this book is that I couldn't put it down and it ended to quickly. Definitely a must read.

Roller coaster ride complete with kidnappings and murders thanks to demons, black and white magic, witches and other interesting characters as seen through the eyes of a rather typical teenage girl who gets dragged into the mix.

This was a fast, fun read with quirky characters that were well developed although I admit to wanting to slap the mouthy teenage witch alongside the head any number of times. I am *not* a fan of mouthy teenagers, but then with a mother like hers, I'm not sure which one I wanted to slap first.

Looks like this will be a series and will definitely try another in hopes she grows up a bit in the next book.

The story was intriguing from the very beginning. It starts with a big bang and ends with... (well I don't want to spoil it).

I enjoyed this story although at times the main character drove me insane. You know when you think "omg what are you thinking girl?!?!". The fact the author was able to make me feel frustrated with Cassie, made me more inclined to read the rest of the story. The story itself caught my eye right away and kept my interest until the very end. The story left me wishing for more. The main character is a 16 year old girl, with a quick temper. The supporting characters fit the story perfectly. The story was dramatic and suspenseful. It is a great read.

I am still thinking about this book while I'm several chapters into the next one. I liked it a lot! I think it would probably be considered in the YA genre and obviously fantasy. A young girl witnesses something that can't be explained and becomes involved in a world she didn't know existed. Yes, this has been done before, but it was original enough to keep me going back to the book when I should have been doing something else. Very fun story and I hope it to be continued.

Do demons make good coffee?

A five star book if it had an ending. Is is a chapter more than a novel. It was entertaining but I'm not sure the characters are deep enough for another in the series, that also might be a chapter not a novel.
Good potential.
