A bioweapon designed to save the world...
A scientific discovery that will alter human history...
And a new threat that will bring humanity to the Edge of Exctinction.

The dust from Dr. Kate Lovato's bioweapon has settled. Projections put death counts in the billions. Her weapon was supposed to be the endgame, but it turned a small percentage of those infected with the Hemorrhage Virus into something even worse.

Survivors call them Variants. Irreversible epigenetic changes have transformed them into predators unlike any the human race has ever seen. And they are evolving. With the doomsday clock ticking, the fractured military plans Operation Liberty--a desperate mission designed to take back the cities and destroy the Variant threat. Master Sergeant Reed Beckham agrees to lead a strike team into New York City, but first he must return to Fort Bragg to search for the only family he has left.

At Plum Island, Kate discovers Central Command may have considerably underestimated the Variant population in New York. As Operation Liberty draws closer, Kate warns Beckham that Team Ghost won't just face their deadliest adversary yet--they may be heading into a trap.

As good as the first book in the series. This is my second time of reading the book - and I think I've found a continuity error. In the prologue - three new characters are introduced: Meg, Rex and Jed. They're holed up in a firestation, and witness a fire-fight on the building opposite. I assume, this is the same trio of Marines from book one; when Beckham, Horn and Riley were vacationing in New York; basically doing some reconnaissance, to see how Kate's bioweapon has fared against the infected. I remember Beckham laying Claymore Mines at the base of the billboard; in case the infected clambered over it onto the roof. Anyway, Beckham detonated the mines and there was a big explosion (obviously), then the billboard toppled off the roof, though there was no mention of it in the prologue; just the fire-fight and the Blackhawk Chopper picking them up. Either Meg and the others went temporarily blind and deaf - or I've missed something? No big deal, anyway.

The fight for survival continues: as Kate's bioweapon (X9H9) didn't kill all the people infected with the Haemorrhage Virus. Despite a myriad of infected being killed, there were survivors and these are known as: Variants. These Variants are much smarter, faster and deadlier - and are evolving at an exponential rate. The Variants do have a weakness though: UV Rays.

Elsewhere, General Richard Kennor of Central Command is putting the wheels in motion for a mission: Operation Liberty; to reclaim all the major cities - which are overrun with the Variants. Back on Plum Island, Colonel Jensen tells Beckham and a room-full of other Marines, what Kennors plans are for taking back New York. Kate isn't too happy about it, as she believes there may be more Variants: that are unaccounted for; that the satellite images and recon teams already in New York aren't showing the true numbers. Beckham agrees to be one of the teams, but he has something he needs to do first: go to Fort Bragg with Big Horn to look for Horns wife and daughters - and to see if there are any other survivors; mainly military.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the book.

The Test…

Dr. Kate Lovato, from the CDC, has developed a vaccine (in just a few days) that gives a fighting chance against the “Hemorrhage Virus.”

Although billions are killed by the weaponized vaccine, the survivors of the disease have transformed into something worse than before.

As Team Ghost prepares to take back New York City, they might be biting off more than they can chew…

The team is very wary of their mission, but going in, they appear to be better prepared.

This series is one of those, edge of your seat, page turners, that keep you in suspense from start to finish so if you're looking for some action-packed entertainment then you have come to the right place! There is never a dull moment and the death count is steadily increasing. In book two, the Variants are continuously evolving. They are smarter, faster, stronger and a lot more predatory! Their new abilities make them that much harder for the strike team to kill, especially when the team doesn't realize just what they're up against.

Sometimes you just want some fast paced action and that's what I appreciate most about this series. Its a non-stop high intensity thrill ride. If you like audio, then I would recommend listening to it, because the narrator is fantastic! With that said though, I felt like there was a lot of repetition in both book one and two and I think the stories would be just as good if they were slimmed down some.

*I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

Nothing much to say here, just a regular, though quite decent, viral thriller. Probably I'll even continue with the series, it is a suitable read when you just want to turn your brains off and read something lite and simple.

[Note: I received an advanced reader's copy of this book from the author in exchange for review.]

Fans of Nicholas Sansbury Smith’s opening gambit in the Extinction Cycle series, Extinction Horizon, will find plenty to enjoy in this bio-tech military thriller. Extinction Edge picks up a short time after the fall-out of Book One’s finale, with the nasty, and now evolving, Variants taking center-stage as the primary threat.

Smith’s readers probably know what to expect by now, and, as per his usual, the author continues to deliver the goods with knowing nods toward technothriller, horror, sci-fi, and post-apocalypse genres. There’s also a lot of well-executed action and plenty of rousing man versus monster scenes that will leave readers ragged, as the remnants of the US military, with Reed Beckham’s Delta team on the front-lines, perform a rescue mission to Fort Bragg, before launching Operation Liberty in an effort to reclaim New York from the Variants.

For as good as it is – and it is very good – Extinction Edge suffers a teensy bit from middle-child syndrome. It has to carry on from the events of the previous book, without resolving too many story threads, while not only setting up Book 3 but acting as a gripping narrative in its own right. While the action is top-notch and Smith had my attention throughout, the medical thriller aspects that I loved in Extinction Horizon are forced to take a bit of a backseat to the military operations. Dr. Kate Lovato is stuck in a bit of a no-win scenario, and spends most of the book determined to believe that there is no way to cure the Variants and that they’re an unstoppable force. This causes her to make a big decision that will no doubt play center-stage in the next installment, but finds herself in a rut for most of this book. However, there is a burgeoning romance between her and Beckham, with their connection to one another deepening nicely, and providing a reason for both of them to keep on fighting. I just wish she had a more pro-active role here.

Smith introduces us to some new faces, such as a trio of survivors in New York, as well as some new military operators that join Beckham’s team. The best of these is Fritz, a war vet who lost both of his legs to an IED and has blade prosthetics. I found this character to be solidly worth rooting for, particularly in the book’s finale where he gets a standout bit of imagery as he emerges from the fog of war. It’s great stuff, and I look forward to reading more about him!

I’m really liking Smith’s take on the apocalypse in the Extinction Cycle, blending together viral outbreaks, sort-of zombies, and military thriller. The story is well-crafted, the characters are believable, and the action makes for an exciting read. If you haven’t yet read the previous installment, Extinction Horizon, then get on that pronto. This is definitely a series worth reading.

I knew it! Makes complete sense! Finished reading this awesome tale and what do you know, Mr. Nicholas is sharing with his readers how he used to work for homeland security.

At this point who is truly the predominate species, Humans or Non-Zombies? Hmm.. Things are not looking so good for the human race as of right now.

Mr. Nicholas had the nerve to write a quick sex scene, I won't go into too much detail on it but I will say that it was probably pg 14 and executed well enough that my mind put together the rest. I think I was able to imagine it to about an R rating.

Danger is everywhere. No-one is safe. There is no place to hide. New York has been lost. (No more knock off purses). These infected humans are like zombies on crack! They can do anything. They are rapidly evolving so you never know what to expect from one battle to the next.

Listen, I was sitting here minding my business reading this book. The next thing I know, I'm inside the story, running next to Beckham and Chow with a machine gun in my hand, trying to out maneuver these intelligent, virus infected, gross lipped, bones clicking when they walk, 'non freaking-zombies' who are actually called, "variants." They are so gross you guys. They have lips like suckers and eyes like reptiles. Yuk! It's good.

The very small amount of survivors are scattered all over. The head of the troops, Kennor is arrogant and will not listen to people smarter than him which is causing valuable soldiers to lose there lives.

If you're looking for an escape from the mundane, then go ahead and enter into this thriller that's full of danger, action, and survival.

I rarely write reviews, but this is some of the laziest plot creation I've ever read. I'm usually very forgiving of plot holes and am willing to suspend reality for apocalyptic and dystopian novels, but there are so many parts of the book that defy logic.

I would like to point out that these are not solely the fault of the author. The editors of the book clearly dropped the ball. Surely, the editing process should have cleaned up some of these problems. Most often, people slam the authors for bad writing, but the editors should take most of the blame in my opinion. As a writer, it's easy to get lost in the weeds of a long novel with a lot of technical detail. It's the editor's job to analyze the book from a reader's perspective and catch these thigns. Big failure there on this book.

Here are a few in no particular order, which are sort of spoilery, but don't reveal any important details of what happens in the book.

There are a handful of others, but this book has robbed me of several hours. I'd be as dumb as the scientists and soldiers/Marines in the book if I continued writing these out.

Here's the bottom line. I really liked the first book! Out of the end-of-the-world books I've read (dozens), the first book was refreshingly different and believable. The second book is so inferior that it makes me thing the author/editors were either rushed to finish it or just got lazy. Often times, it only takes a paragraph to fill in these holes. It's a shame since the first book was good. I really expected this book to follow with that quality.

What can I say about this book that I did not say about the first? I love the characters who have pulled me into their world and made me care about them in a big way. The 'zombies', still prefer the term infected but I will let that go because the story is good enough to make me not care as much. The introduction of the new characters was done perfectly and allowed me to get a feel for them when they return further down the line. The imagery pulls me in and I can actually visualize and put myself in the narrative as it plays out, even though I have never been to the locations described.

With the threat of infection no longer a part of the equation thanks to Kate, the military is now looking to take back the cities. The infected are still in the cities, roaming and killing any survivors they find. But they are not the simple creatures that the men in charge think they are by any means. They are sending their men into a situation that could further decimate their ranks and put them on a path to complete extinction.

There is tension from the moment this book begins to the time it ends and I loved every minute of it. There is a great deal of violence but you know that it is necessary and it is so well done that you cannot help but cheer them on in its execution. The relationships between the men is solid and what you want to see between guys who have each others back on a daily basis.

I don't know what more to say other than this is a really great series. When I wasn't actively reading I found myself thinking about it and what might happen next. I was still in this world long after I finished and all I could think about was what will happen in the next book. I am hooked! Highly recommend to zombie lovers or anyone who has a thing for the military.

I really like this series where an unknown virus turns most of humanity into Variants - zombie like creatures that are developing new and scary talents. Our heroes are trying to fight them to take back New York City, but are having a really hard time. The doctor Kate is still trying to figure out an antidote or way to fight the Variants. Fun series and I love the narration by Bronson Pinchot.

So, after the events of the first book, Dr Kate Lovato has succeeded in creating a.... cure, of sorts. It killed billions of the infected but not all. What is left seem to be evolving rapidly and are harder to kill. Beckham and Team Ghost are tasked with going into New York and taking back the city from the remaining Variants. They are told there should only be a few thousand left but they don't realise the extent of the survivours till it's too late. They also don't know that the surviving Variants are quicker, smarter and can communicate. How do Team Ghost handle themselves when they are the hunted?

So book 2 picks up after book 1. Kate has created an antidote but is afraid that she might just have created something worse. The projected number of human survivours is going down everyday, with the human race becoming extinct in a matter of weeks, so she knows she has no choice. She also finds herself caring more and more for a certain Master Sergeant.

Beckham meanwhile, is putting his life on the line again, and with the wrong Intel this time it might just be his last. He goes into New York only to find that the Variants numbers were massively underestimated and that they are different. The cure has turned them into elite killing machines. I felt like Beckham just keeps getting better. He is so much more than a soldier. He is willing to do what is needed to save any other human. While he is terrified, he is the best at his job so can compartmentalise a lot of his feelings. I loved how he is constantly thinking of his brothers in arms first and putting them first. It's what a leader should do!

This edition was even more scary and frightening than the first!! Seeing the variants develop to be more cunning, smarter and even communicate was equal parts terrifying as it was fascinating. This author really knows how to write!!! He created scenes that were memorable and ones that will make me have nightmares for days :) He has created a dark, desolate and bleak world, but it's one I don't want to leave. The characters are amazing and have captured my heart and the plot is pulse poundingly spectacular. It is a story that is evolving into something epic!! Bring on book 3.

Again, Bronson Pinchot was astounding. He really brings the action and tension to life and made me want to keep listening, even when I was falling asleep from the tiredness. He was clear and has a crisp voice. He gave each character their own personality and captured their essence perfectly. Brilliantly written and brilliantly read!!

I'm rating this book on quality rather than personal preference. The author provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for a review...but I'm not big on military and this one is all about the military.

It picks up shortly after the ending of book 1. As mentioned in that one, Team Ghost wanted to go to Fort Bragg to see if Horn's family, or anyone for that matter, survived. They got their chance. This was military excursion one into the monster infested remains of the USA. Once back, they got to go on excursion two. The military brass decided they would send the remaining personel into the cities to win them back from the monsters. Unfortunately, they sent the boys out with bad intel and things take a turn for the worse.

If you like action, military, fighting, monsters and seemingly no-win situations, this is your book. It was action pretty much from start to finish.

Now, from the personal standpoint, there were two things that didn't make sense to me.

I know this is what makes the story exciting because it's not as much fun for the military to take over idaho and kill just a few monsters. It's got to be big and bad, and this story had that down!!

This book is responsible for my tired and slightly cranky mood as I type this review. Nicholas Sansbury Smith has produced a book that I simply could not put down. This second book in the Extinction Cycle series powers on from its predecessor to deliver a first class story that mixes so many genres together seamlessly.

Extinction Edge pull together a touch of Post-Apocalypse, Sci-fi, Science, Thriller and Action to deliver a narrative that compels you to read on way past bedtime. Like all good series the main story-line continues to develop along with the main characters and ends leaving the reader wanting more. The author's ability to pull you into the story is what makes this book a fantastic 5 Star read. I look forward in seeing how this series evolves and adapts in it's next offering.

Extinction Edge is exactly what I was looking for in a sequel. The characters are continuing to evolve (as are the Variants, which is scary to think about) and there are even a few more characters introduced which gives the book a Walking Dead sort of feel as you go back and forth between the different story lines. The story is gripping, and it is so action packed that you will end up on the edge of your seat with a shortness of breath. Or, like me, you may even forget to take breaths every now and then. But beyond all of the action, you will actually care about these characters. Smith even adds a little bit of romance which is a good palate cleanser from all of the blood and gore. NSS has done a wonderful job so far in this series and I cannot wait to see what Books 3 and beyond have to offer!

Mini-Review:

Great follow up to book one! It had a nice balance of getting to actually know the characters involved, action, ridiculous decisions and dealing with the reality of bio-weaponized mutations. The story felt more menacing in atmosphere. The idea of you think you know what you are up against and how it doesn't reflect the actual event at all.

The series continues to impress. The virus takes a turn that pushes the characters in a dangerous new direction. As is always the case with the genre, the real challenge is having the entire planet in peril without having circumstances so dire that the story becomes utterly depressing. Smith does a fantastic job walking the line of hope and despair as his characters fight for the fate of those who survived the initial outbreak.

The Ebola-like plague swept across the world as the victims, blood leaking from every orifice, suddenly turned on uninfected family, aid workers, anyone in range of their rage and hunger. Every major city across the world has been overrun by victims of the Ebola virus / VX99 combination, spreading the disease to more than three fourths of the world's population.

If you haven't read Extinction Horizon, the first book in the Extinction Cycle, then stop reading now because there be spoilers ahead. If you haven't read it, you really should! The chance to meet the remarkable characters who bring this amazing series to life is just too good to miss! The story quickly springs to action and the action is pretty much non-stop. I don't want to spoil it for you, so get reading! You won't regret it, I promise!

Dr. Kate Lovato, developer of the bio-weapon Variant X9H9, hailed as the 'savior of the world', has stopped the Hemorrhage Virus in its tracks, killing the infected everywhere - almost - 90% anyway. The 10% who survived have morphed into nearly unstoppable killing machines with a hunger for human flesh. And the 'Variants', as they are called, are mutating, evolving, and getting smarter.

Master Sergeant Reed Beckham has a new mission for Team Ghost - Operation Liberty - to attack the Variants and rescue survivors in New York City. But first, he and SSGT. Parker Horn are going to Ft. Bragg to rescue Horn's family and any remaining Delta Force members.

At Bragg, Beckham and Horn fight their way through swarms of Variants, many more than expected. They exhausted all of their ammo, emptying their weapons, down to their combat knives and still face dozens of the Variants. They're rescued by Chow and Jinx, another 2 Delta Force Operators from Team Titanium. Chow lead Beckham and Horn to

Okay, that's enough. Time for you to trust Team Ghost to provide you with heart-pounding, adrenaline pumped, blood-in-your-face action from characters that are so beautifully described that they become family, friends, rivals, arch-villains, even the checkout girl at the dollar store! This is an exciting story of a possible future, excellently told by a master storyteller. I have no reservations about recommending this book, this series to you. If you like post-apocalyptic sci-fi Delta Force combat action - well you get the idea - I guarantee you will love this book.

A book you should read during the daylight hours and if possible, not by yourself.

The second book in an ongoing series. I highly recommend reading the prequel and book 1 before reading this to get a deeper understanding of the background and the previous events.

Parental Note: As a post-apocalyptic story, naturally there is violence and adult language. You might find the occasional adult situation as well.

As everyone adjusts to the nightmarish events being their new reality, they uncover some disturbing truths about the beings known as the Variants.

Outside of the gore and horror, new relationships are forming. To me, this is the heart and soul of the overall story.

This was okay. I have the same problem that I had with the first book: not enough character development (no development at all, actually) and too much "MONSTERS SHOOT THEM BOOOOOOM". Again: this is a book, not a screenplay.

I still like the story well enough to keep reading the series.

Sansbury continues to impress with his unrelenting action. This book’s better than the first (which I enjoyed), but like the rest of his books, the ending feels rushed and comparatively empty.

Now, with that said, I don’t mind because Sansbury writes at incredible speeds and he’ll have another book out in months, meaning I don’t have to wait long to see the story ramp up further. It’s just the ends of his books are always packed with action that’s really no different from the action throughout the rest of the book. The story is entertaining and always goes from one action set piece to another, but when the last one doesn’t feel quite big enough to be the climax or doesn’t feel like something that the rest of the book led to, then it feels empty.

Again though, his endings are clearly cliffhangers, and he’ll release another book soon, so I’m not upset. (Book 3 is already out, but I’m basing this off of his release windows.)

I listened and enjoyed book 1 after my husband's recommendation, and moved on to book 2 and enjoyed this one just as much. One area that caught my attention was the amount of detail that Mr. Smith uses, especially when talking about Fort Bragg (I've lived in that area for several years), so I knew exactly where the characters were when they were on base. I like hearing the details about the Variants and how they continue to evolve as well. Lastly, I'm curious as to how the human race will extinguish them in the end. On to book 3.

Lots of action especially descriptive with military stuff. Not much character development. I’m listening to the audio and it’s pretty good. I’m enjoying the story well enough but it’s just lacking something for me. Not 100% what that is yet. I will read the next book since I have the audio already.
