Wrapping up Randal's story. This and The High King's Daughter, like the first two, are tied strongly to the earlier ones, and each other.
In this one, Randal and Walter are escorting gold to the siege of Bell Castle, which has a magical bell, rung every hour, that keeps anyone but the castle wizard from casting magic within it. And the Lady Blanche is held there -- the last living . After a magically aided sally, the gold is stolen, leaving Randal with no alibi. His investigation of what happen -- the Castle's people stole it through a portal -- triggers a trap. The rest involves single combat, a secret marriage, a revelation about the royal family, a hedge witch, a prisoner, and much more.
I remember reading and adoring it when I was maybe 10. LOVED it. But sadly never got the chance to read any of the others in the series and it's been stuck in my head for all that time. Occasionally I'd wonder what it was called but never had luck finding it. But through the grace of Google I finally found a copy to read again after almost 20 years.
OK it's for like third graders but it's fun. I'm surprised how much of it holds up even for an adult. Good plot, good characters, badass setting and it's a solid book.
Best part is how much I remembered of it! Apparently the entire plot of the book has been rattling around in my head for all that time. Déjà vu.
Adorei!
This was such an enjoyable read. Randal, Lys, and Walter travel together once again and tackle a new challenge when they get to Bell Castle. What followed next was interesting, twisting, and well done! So much fun.
I really though the title for this one was the Bell Tower or the Wizard's Bell. Perhaps I was wrong. My copy is a hardcover yellow book. By this point in the series, these are starting to get a bit drawn out.
