(A digital copy was generously provided by the author John Hennessy in exchange for an honest review. *This does not influence my rating and review*)

So this book is real creepy. Horror books are usually out of my wheel but John Hennessy managed to pull me out of my reading comfort zone by simply making me drawn into the spooky storyline of this book.

description

The Blood and the Raven is the second novella installment of A Tale of Vampires. I've enjoyed the first installment of this book which was the Murderous Little Darlings and this novella is equally good!

One thing I love about The Blood and the Raven is its beautiful, thrilling plot. It's about teenagers hanging out around an old cemetery, telling one another horror tales. But that's not just about that. One of these kids, the main character of this story Seth, has the ability to kill anyone who listens to his story. Sounds scary? You have no idea how my spine basically tingled! As Seth's story went on, I discovered yet another more scary story about a couple who went to a strange town where they experienced an unforgettable real-life nightmare.

For a young adult horror book, this is not a typical fare because it's basically unique and really effective. The writing style, once again, impressed me. And those scenes-- especially the ending, made me want to hurl. I've actually read it around 3:00 A.M. and I was scared as shit!

So if you are a horror fan, this book is for you. I highly recommend you to read the first novella of this series if you haven't read it yet. :)

The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.
----Howard Phillips Lovecraft —known, an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction

John Hennessy, an English YA novelist, captivated our minds with his latest novella, The Blood and the Raven that features fear like never before. From the name itself, the book gives us a vibe that it's nothing about all those sweet vampire love story, instead it will be a sick story and the fear of which will absolutely overpower our minds.

Synopsis:
A group of teenagers spend a night amongst the ruins of an old priory, taking turns to scare one other with a tale of horror, each one more scary than the last.

When it comes to Seth, the last storyteller, he is reluctant to tell the story, because once the tale has been told, those who hear it, will begin to die.

His friends think Seth is bluffing - but is he in fact, telling the truth?

This novella centers around a bunch of kids goofing around an old cemetery- totally normal teenage stuff! They plan to tell one horror story. Among them, there is a sweet, innocent, geeky guy called Seth, who tells a millions year old Gothic and horror folk-lore, but his story has the power to kill those who listen to it! If you are brave enough, then read definitely read this book.

I won't sugar mouth about this author, since he is my close friend. Honestly speaking, John's intricately detailing style of story-telling also entrances my mind, and I found his horror stories to be much more scarier than what Stephanie Meyer tried to do with hers. Bottom Line: This author knows how to spun a horror story in such a way that it feels your mind with a sense of fear and while reading the book always dares me to look over my shoulders. His narrative style feels up my mind with an eerie feeling, and when I manage to look up from the book even for a fleeting second, I can almost feel the faint stillness in the air. That's what this author can do, and I'm not bragging about it! Read it for your self, then you watch yourself, how you sway with the rhythm of the story as it takes you with its highs and lows. The best part is that John's story-telling have never failed to intrigue me deeply!

The characters that John crated for this book are absolutely striking enough to make you feel like even for the briefest moment you feel like you know these vast pool of various characters somewhere from your own life. Yes, John makes them very realistic and artistic with his evocative words. There is an underlying story in this novella that is surely going to leave you scared to death! Moreover, John spins the story that in such a way that it only captures your mind with fear, but also makes us smile with his use of witty punch lines here and there. John's sense of humor is really great despite the darkness we can feel the slight lightness upon our heavy hearts.
PS: This novella is not for those with a weak/faint heart.

Verdict: Do read this book, if you want to experience fear in a whole new level.

Once again, I want to start by thanking my good friend John Hennessy for sending me the 2nd pdf copy of this amazing series.

John is not only amazing, but a very sweet and kind author. Isn't it nice to read your name infront of the author's book(right on it's title page, below is written..A special version for Rachel)..isn't that cool?!

Anyway, going back to this book..this is indeed a compelling story of vampires where a girl named Juliana, one of the three siblings in the Murderous Little Darlings,is now a young adult here who works in a pub or an inn called Raven.

The other part of this story tells us about a group of teenagers who take turns to scare one another by telling a tale of horror, which gave me goosebumps while reading this.

The author of this book is an expert of this genre and I do admire his style of writing. It's so nicely and neatly done!:)

I just wonder what happened to the other two siblings named Marcus and Rocco..maybe this is what I'm about to find out on the third book.

Oh,I do hope John's preparing that now for me,hehe..

I had really enjoyed the first in this series of books and admire John Hennessy's desire to return the expression of the Vampire back to it's original evil form (Dracula, Anne Rice books).

Most other Vampire books have made Vampires good looking dudes and girls who then have a human fall for them, there is a romance, sometimes a love triangle and it's so very blah, blah. It's not horror and it's not REALLY what a Vampire is now is it?

So I was happy to step into this second in the series. This time the book starts with a teenage Seth sitting with a group of teenagers who are telling spooky tales, Seth has held off before on telling the story of The Blood and the Raven but tonight is to be the night...

I liked being rushed back in time in the book, with the carriage and horses galloping down darkened dirt roads with the drive cracking the whip and the elite guests inside holding on tight. Immediate atmosphere, I was imagining the wolves in the forest, castles on hills, Dracula around the corner.

A husband and wife end up having to depart their carriage and seek refuge in an inn called The Raven. This is no ordinary inn and that is obvious from very early on in the book. You can sense something dark is coming whilst it's not obvious.

I don't want to spoil all the plot but I would like to say that perhaps some travellers should be more careful about where they choose to lay their heads.

My praise for this book is in John's ability to portray the Vampire as something evil, one that still sleeps in a coffin, one that is not gentle, nor loving in the bite on the neck and the sucking of blood from the body. No mercy. I felt in all honest that he should go even darker in these books, pushing the books into that real Vampire realm.

What I struggled with a bit was feeling the book did not "flow" that at times it felt like a disjointed read. My other criticism is in the conversation flow in the book, again a bit disjointing and staccato, not reading in my mind like a flowing conversation. The book has man short sentences and short paragraphs and I think in expanding these it would make the book less disjointed for the reader.

I found the ending surprising, certainly graphic and horrific. I pondered if the two stories in the book (past and present plot lines) should not be separated but I do get that one of the characters in this book is one we met in the first, and whom we shall meet again.

I had given the first book 4 stars, this one earns 3.5 from me simply because of those points mentioned. But John is writer who is growing in his craft and I love the fact he is bringing back the true Vampire to fiction. He is the ONLY author in the last twenty years who convinced me to read a book with Vampires in it, that says a lot. Especially as I want more of John's books.

A dark, creepy, disturbing novella length read to take in on a dark, rainy night with a nice glass of red wine. Keep your neck well covered. I was so proud to receive a thanks for supporting John's writing in the dedication of the book.

I received a copy of this book from the author John Hennessy, many thanks for my opportunity to review the book. I always promise a fair and honest review and hope that growth can come from my minor criticisms and opinions.

I thought this short story was brilliantly written. The whole Raven turn Vampire turn seductive mistress had a ring to it. I read the first Vampire tale but this one was way better.

Julianne character scared me the most. She was malicious, vengeful and just evil. HAHa.

Let me tell you a story that will blow your brains (like literally)

Once again thanks to the author for giving me an opportunity to read his works and share my views with other readers

So this is the third consecutive book that i have been reading from the author's work and i am seeing a tremendous progress.

The blood and Raven is a short story that is as good as the first book, " Murderous Little Darlings" from this series. The plot is spooky which i am finally starting to understand is a forte of the author. His stories are bathed in frightening elements that is best suited to read in the dark all alone, scaring the life out of you.

The book flows crisp and smoothly bringing all the elements together to keep you thrilled and chilled to your bones. The development of the plot is impressive and there is no apparent deviations in the narration making it more easy to absorb yourself into the story

The work shows a clever crafting and story weaving and makes you wonder how else will the author scare you in his next work

The Blood and Raven is a quick read and carries a very powerful story, that is narrated with efficiency and impressively put together with a proper start and ending so as you do not get lost with the specifics considering that it is of mere 74 pages. The fact is that in these mere 74 pages, the author will make you run for cover, if you are weak heart or jumping with excitement if you love horror stories. (as for what the book did to me ..... i will tell you right after i come out of my hiding)

This is the third book by John Hennessy that I have read, and I must say, his writing has matured so much in every way. His prose is captivating, it doesn't let you leave the book, his characters are ready to walk out of these pages. And yes, it definitely has a sweet old world charm about it. The author can do so much more if he starts writing historical fiction. So that's one suggestion for him. Now something about the story: its a vampire tale and no guesses there! A group of friends decide to meet and tell each other scary stories. It is Seth's turn this time and he tells everybody the story of a couple, an old man and his young wife, who land up at a bar in the middle of a stormy night to find themselves in a group of people who look strange. They are intrigued, disgusted, disappointed even, and decide to leave, only to discover that its not their choice to make. Oops! What will happen now? How will they survive the ordeal? Or will they survive it at all? What is the secret of this bar and the raven? Who is Juliana? Is she what she looks like or does she have a secret life, too? I would strongly recommend this novella to all those who love vampire fiction. More power to your pen, John!

Synopsis
A group of teenagers spend a night amongst the ruins of an old priory, taking turns to scare one other with a tale of horror, each one more scary than the last.
When it comes to Seth, the last storyteller, he is reluctant to tell the story, because once the tale has been told, those who hear it, will begin to die.
His friends think Seth is bluffing - but is he in fact, telling the truth?

First off, I would like to say that after reading this short story, I will most definitely be staying away from any woman named Juliana and any one that wears a necklace with the letter 'G', hanging from it.

I am honestly starting to believe that John Hennessy loves to scare the daylights out of me! He knows I love his writing style and anything he writes I most definitely will read.

The story starts in a cemetary where teenagers are gathered around telling ghost stories. One of the teenagers, Seth is called on for his turn to tell a tale and he is reluctant at first, but eventually caves in.

The tale starts at the inn called the Blood and the Raven. A couple traveling through takes shelter there to get out of the rain. They have a few drinks and the husband is insistant on them leaving and heading back home, against his wife's advice, who feels the weather is too bad to travel in.

The weather worsens as they travel and decided to make their way back to the Inn. When they walk inside, it is desolate and soon find theirselves separated as the husband is closed behind a door. The woman is frightened, but soon finds comfort when she realizes there is someone near her, Juliana, one of the workers at the Inn. Juliana takes her to a room. When Juliana places the key inside the lock, the woman notices it turns on its own.

After the woman is comfortable under the covers of her large bed, she falls into a sleep and dreams. She dreams of Juliana and then wakes to find Juliana's fangs piercing deeply into her neck.

John did a brilliant job of engaging me into the story from beginning and end I cannot compliment him enough on his ability to craft characters so well. I loved the story even though it scared the heebie jeebies out of me and recommend it to anyone who is looking for a well written terrifying story.

I am by no means a vampire or horror connoisseur. My usual genre is romance, so you see how far away this is. But, I read the first book in the series as well as other books by this other and couldn't stay away.

This is master storytelling at it's finest. It's a story within a story. You don't feel like you are really in the vampire story, but hearing it around the campfire with Seth and his friends. He's telling all of us a tale about a couple that stops at an inn for the night, but something isn't right. They sense it right away. No good happens in the inn. Unable to leave town due to a raging storm, they have no choice but to stay.

Seth warned his friends. He told them it was dangerous for his words to reach their ears. But, they didn't believe him. Instead, they settled in to hear a good story and endure the horrors they didn't know would ensue.

I knew this was the second in a series, even though it could be read as a stand alone, but I wasn't sure how it tied together with the first one. That soon became apparent and I actually loved that it made me look for the connection. By the end, it's obvious. These aren't random vampires. We've met them before.

It takes you back to childhood. The fire in front of you, tents behind you. The image is sitting around telling this story is so strong that it sucks you in from the beginning, grabbing hold of your memories and of your imagination. An easy 5 stars for me.

Vampires in the old style

I read the first in this series Murderous Little darlings a while ago and loved it. I had assumed that this, the second book in the series would continue where that one left off, but like the twists in John Hennessy’s books, nothing is as it appears. In this one Juliana is older and living with her mother in a creepy tavern that they run and the setting is ‘Olde Worlde’ as opposed to the modern day setting of the first book, which confused me initially. But again, as a standalone it works well. The story starts with Seth and some friends around a campfire at night telling scary stories. When it’s Seth’s turn he tells the story of the tavern and it’s occupants. Without spoiling too much of the story, it is creepy and scary with a brilliant ending which I really didn’t see coming. If you like your vampires realistic, lacking in compassion for the victims and with a real taste for blood, then this series of books are for you. Think ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ meets ‘Sleep Hollow’ and you get a feel for what this story is. Now onto book three…

I received this book from the author for an honest review

The first sentence brilliant and fun.

The story will get to you real quick and it was a little tangled but explains a lot and you have a more wide view on the characters and the plot of Juliana.

I loved the scene with the raven it was funny and the mood is a little twisted but I love this kind of vampires ruthless and mean that's what how vampires should be.

all in all I really liked it and i'm anxious to keep reading more in this series.

I love stories within a story and The Blood and the Raven doesn't dissappoint.John Hennessy is very descriptive of characters and places, especially when he takes the reader back in time with Seth's story. The stories will send a shiver up yuor back.
I read Murderous Little Darlings - the first in the series - which was brilliant- so I became a little confused when the MC Juliana's age didn't quite gel with the first book - then it dawned on me from the few films I have seen about vampires, they are ageless, then everything made sense.
All in all another great story from John Hennessy.

As someone not overly familiar with the vampire genre, apart from a few movies, I have to say that this was a highly impressive, intriguing, not to say eerie introduction to the world of vampires. John Hennessy is something of an authority on the true essence of vampires and points out that this story is strictly in the tradition of vampires as cold-blooded killers, as depicted by Bram Stoker's Dracula, rejecting later misrepresentations of vampires as seductive romancers.
For those who love their horror starkly terrifying and dark, you won't find a better exponent of this art of story telling than Mr Hennessy.
It begins with a group of teenagers attempting to scare the living daylights out of one another in the creepy setting of a priory. They are failing miserably until it's Seth turn and two candles are ominously extinguished as he begins his forbidding tale...
A peevish man and his young wife are travelling through the Midlands by horse and carriage in torrential rain. They take respite in an inn called the Blood and the Raven. A savage raven does indeed reside there. The couple find the beautiful landlady, Mariana and her daughter Juliana most alluring and welcoming, however, the locals are strange and sniggering, making disturbing comments about blood and the raven. Then the landlady offers them separate rooms due to some strange custom. The man is angry and he and his wife leave. They are however forced back to the inn by the broken road. Upon entering, some really blood chilling events occur. There is more to Mariana and her daughter than meets the eye...it's truly disturbing.
What is so amazing about Hennessy's writing is that he manages to draw you completely into the world he has created. He creates a dismal, horrifying, claustrophobic world with atmospheric writing that conveys a terror and evil that reign supreme. I was also surprised by some of the twists and turns - testament to highly skilful writing, why should I be surprised when I should guess what is coming in a vampire tale entitled The Blood and the Raven?
I was perturbed by this story and scared and the part of me that enjoys being perturbed and scared very much enjoyed this clever tale.

I think if I had read this as a stand-alone, I wouldn't have questioned it as much as I did, having read the first in the series.

The book is a story within a story. Five teenagers are sitting around, each holding a candle. (I assume they're in the woods, although I'm unsure if this is ever made clear or not.) They've all had their turn telling scary stories, now it's Seth's turn. But he's reluctant to share it.

He eventually tells the tale of a woman and her husband and they're odd experience with "The Blood and the Raven Inn".

The back story was interesting, the details were well done, and as I said, as a standalone it works really well.

However, having read the first in the series, it confused me. Seth's story places Juliana as an eighteen year old vampire (though clearly mentally older than her physical age) back in the day of horse drawn carriages. But in the preceding book, Juliana is an eleven year old triplet with two brothers who they briefly mention in The Blood and the Raven. Book one, I'm under the impression, is set in modern day.

And from my understanding, her brothers were human. Perhaps she turned them after the first story finished (which was hinted at). But that still doesn't explain why she has brothers back in the olden days if they were human in the modern day story. (Maybe I missed the point of first book?)

Perhaps the fact that Seth is telling the story, maybe some truths have been blurred and the era of which it was set was exaggerated for dramatic effect.

Maybe these things will be answered in future books. Maybe I'm reading into things and not seeing the story for what it was, which is an entertaining vampire story. I did enjoy the book, I may have even loved it.

John Hennessy is the kind of author who likes to throw in twists that leaves more questions than answers, then leaves you hanging for what comes next.

When reviewing a book of certain genre, I tend to produce a disclaimer for the benefit of the author and prospective readers. I’m not a horror/zombie/vampire fan, but if you are - you’ll love this book.
To his credit, I’ve read a previous vampire tale by this author and I’ve come back for more, so that demonstrates trust from me, but more importantly, considerable talent from the author. Here, the reader is given two tales for the price of one.
The scene is set in modern times with a group of teens in suitably creepy surroundings, all taking turns to tell scary stories. By the end of the first chapter, after suitable warnings, Seth takes on the mantel of narrator ... and then things step up. As the second chapter gets underway the reader is introduced to Seth’s scary story – The Blood and the Raven. At this point we go back a couple of centuries.
Yes, it is a story within a story, and I was drawn in to the tale of circumstances where vampires might stalk the misty woodland or the outskirts of a small, remote town. Although the characters of the ‘scary story’ might be considered secondary – it is up to the reader to decide if they are the secondary or primary characters.
The characterisation, imagery and dialogue are well done throughout, with appropriate levels of violence, blood and gore. As I explained in my intro, I’m not a fan of the genre, but I will always give credit for good storytelling – and that is where this author has impressed me. If I was a fan of the genre I would rate higher.

Hennessy’s vampires are a mixture of the sexy and the terrifying. They may use their powers to look innocent and beautiful but he’s not afraid of letting them bare their black hearts. Blood flows and he’s not afraid to show it.

The Blood and the Raven is a tale within a tale, which makes it all that much more interesting. Hennessy’s a talented writer and when it comes time for the internal story to be told he shifts gears and moves into the kind of narrative you get when you’re listening to scary stories around the campfire. Or Trump speeches. Take your pick. They’re both scary.

This is book two of a five story set that’s scheduled to conclude in February of this year. It continues the tale of Juliana (from Murderous Little Darlings) and expands on her particular brand of evil.

If you like beautiful vampires who will also rip your still beating out of your chest and rub the blood all over their faces while you watch in mute horror, John Hennessy has some tales for you.

I rarely dip my toes in the Vampire/horror theme; okay, I admit reading Stephanie Meyers books, but they are more romance than gore! Lol Having said that, this book was recommended to me, and I loved the cover, so I thought I would give it a go.

The short story starts off with a group of friends trying to scare the living daylights out of each other, something I'm sure we can all relate to doing in our teens. Seth, one of the group, then starts his scary tale. During his story, Hennessy transports us back in time to where a couple seeks refuge in an Inn called 'The Raven.' Mistake! Through their stay, we meet some unsavory characters, including the raven.

I won't detail any more of the story, and certainly not the end, but I will say that this story undoubtedly goes back to the roots of the original vampire stories - the darker side.

You know how you pick up a book and have a kind of expectation about it? I thought this would be scary. IT IS. I thought it would be a total follow on from the first book. IT IS, but IT ISN'T in some ways.

This is a good thing. It is a short and powerful novella and yet the scary bits really are terrifying. I felt so bad for some of the characters, seriously!!!!

How on earth to do a review without spoilers? In this case I can't do it. This is a corking vampire series and I can't believe it's two months already and I only just read it now. Brilliant and scary tale with so OMG twists at the end.

Crosses and garlic are needed when you read this book^^

I loved this book from start to finish. The opening really grabs your attention and you just have to keep reading to find out what happens next. This book has a story with in a story. There is the story of Seth and his group of friends telling each other horror stories late at night. Then there is the dark story that Seth is telling his friends. A very compelling story about vampires. I loved the ending. It's really, really cool. I just wish I was good at writing reviews because this book is so much better than I could ever describe it.

The story kept me transfixed. I kept wondering what was going to happen not to mention what Seth meant about how someone always died when this story was told , so why was he telling it to his friends.

This was truly a dark gruesome novel that held me from beginning to end. The characters were very real and you could feel the tension building. I fully recommend this book and look forward to the next.

The Blood and the Raven is told from another perspective. 4.3stars

Another very quick read, but now it is time to sleep. This part of the series is told by a character in the story telling a story. He is trapped in the story and must repeat it frequently. This makes his role sad rather than scary. Time for you to get sucked into the story.

Nice tale

This was a great short story. It was well written and well told. And I love vampires and gore, and was not disappointed.
My only complaint is that at 57 pages, it was too short. I would've liked it a bit longer for the price, but the story I got was good. I might have to check out the rest of the series.

Creepy and scary Tale of Vampires

Blood and the Raven is a most suitable title for this book, which I received as a gift in one of the author’s promotions.
The Raven is the name of a pub, owned by two vampires.
Locals were aware of this, but newcomers to the area were not.
A newly created vampire, who was once a guest at that pub, is on the prowl for “food.’
The storyteller, whose role appeared minimal at first, was really one of the main characters in this vampire tale.
The plot was unique, and the creepy and scary story within the story, held my interest from beginning to end.
However, it ended too quickly, but in a surprising way.
I wanted to read more from this author, who is a great storyteller, and whose books I always enjoy.
