The snow has melted, flowers are blooming, and the Easter Beagle is on his way! At least, according to the ever-trusting Linus Van Pelt. Charlie Brown, Lucy, Peppermint Patty, and the rest of the Peanuts gang are a little skeptical. "Good grief!" crabby Lucy says. "There's no Easter Beagle!" In the vein of It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, this Easter classic, based on the television special, features the beloved characters created more than 50 years ago by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz. Peppermint Patty is perennially aggravated with Marcie, Sally is still lovelorn yet litigious ("Never trust a man with a blanket," she fumes. "Get me my lawyer!"), and Charlie Brown is disappointed once again in his holiday hopes.
After reading the book I hardly remembered the movie. I knew that Snoopy was the Easter Beagle but I could not remember all of the little details. I like how difficult it was for Marcie bowl an egg. I like how Lucy was all about getting presents. Most of all I liked how Linus was certain that the Easter Beagle would come just like the Great Pumpkin. I did feel sorry for Charlie Brown because he was the only one who did not get an Easter Egg, but then again he has all the rotten luck.
This book is strange. It's clearly based on a TV special (which I have never seen) but that means that the book itself is choppy and hops from scene to scene, sometimes without a clear resolution. Unlike the Charlie Brown Christmas special that is so wonderful, this book (and the TV episode, I presume) doesn't have much in the way of a moral or lesson. My six-year-old son picked this out at the library and he was mildly entertained by it, but it definitely wasn't my favorite.
Marcie has a difficult time making Easter eggs and it is rather funny. First she fries eggs, the next attempts lead to the waffle iron, toaster, oven and cracking eggs into boiling water. Thank goodness the Easter Beagle can help! Charlie Brown reflects the importance of people being together for holidays.
This has lots of dumb humor. I don't think Charles M Schulz holds up very well. Marcie & Peppermint Patty are just ridiculous. Not a favorite with my kids or me!
I found a little palm sized book in my house about Easter on Easter. So of course I read it. Peanuts aren't my style, everything bad always happens to Charlie Brown. But still, reminds me of the movie.
This is by far my favorite of the Peanuts holiday specials. The book is adorable but it doesn't have as much charm as the movie. However I highly recommend this one!
