I'm not going to continue reading this book and therefore won't rate it, but I still wanted to tell you what I thought about it. When I first saw this book I was soooo excited! Just look at the beautiful cover! The blurb sounded interesting as well but ... I probably expected too much. Sadly.

The main idea is actually not that bad but I didn't like the main character, Alora, one bit. She's perfect. At least she thinks she is. All the time. She's also annoying and arrogant and thinks she can do and get whatever she wants and that nothing and no one can beat her ... just nope. It's so easy to NOT like her that I wonder if the author wanted us to feel that way about Alora. Hmmm.

When she meets young August (at the age of 3!) she decides that she wants him for herself - that's already really weird because she's a 16 year old girl. His parents are getting divorced and he leaves town but by the age of 16 he's back again and that's when Alora and August are becoming friends (and even more). I love love-stories, you know? But this one? Nope, I didn't get it. It's weird and unrealistic and like I said I didn't like Alora, so I really don't know how August could like her that much ... they were constantly fighting or arguing and even the "sweet" scenes seemed strange and forced. *sigh*

I read 65% and the "villain" of the book only appeared once (or twice, idk anymore) so far. But to be honest, he didn't seem to be that bad ... he even let her decide her own fate - either she chooses August and a "normal" life or she could choose her Anmortal (the wolf) self but then he'd hunt and kill her - or I simply didn't get it right, who knows. Anyway, he never felt like a real threat to me. Maybe later on in the book but I'll never know.

Would younger people enjoy this a lot more? I don't know but I certainly didn't like it. I guess it was just not my cup of tea. It wasn't entirely bad, don't get me wrong, but there were too many things that disturbed and/or annoyed me. I'm just glad I got this on Amazon when it was free because I wouldn't want to spend my money on books like this one, sorry.

You know what I don't enjoy? Surprise steampunk.

That is what I encountered from this book.

The blurb of this book makes it sound like a fantastical YA paranormal romance, with the threat of a "monster" lurking in the shadows, ready to create some interesting moments.

What I got was the stream of consciousness of a stuck up "teenage" girl, and a steampunk inspired villain.

Had I known there was even the slightest hint of steampunk in this, I never EVER would have requested to read this novel, as I do not do steam punk, it is just not my cup of tea.

But along with the issues with the steampunk, I also had issues with the nature of the way we are first introduced to August, it screamed pedophile to me. When August is the tender age of three, Alora announces to us that she "wants this human for herself." It was very much a Jacob imprinting on Renesme (Twilight) moment, and made me very awkward.

Alora and August. I just didn't "get" their chemistry. Or Alora's obsession with August . Or Alora's whinging. Or the weird

All in all, this was an easy read, I rolled my eyes a lot, but I have read many things worse, and had this not been surprise steampunk, I probably would have enjoyed it a lot more.

Not my cup of tea, that's for sure.

2 Stars.

Alright, there's captivating... and then there's Alora.

I've been reading Alora for a few days now, but just moved so I'm no longer having a 2 hour commute each day on the train. See, that was my reading time to burn through my kindle while ignoring the stranger's armpit in my face while barreling down a dark underground tube.

Now I have no reading time, as I'm driven to and from my office for a few minutes a day. So as it turns out, my rabid need to finish this book has driven me to 'creepy weirdo' level, and I've been sneaking off to the bathroom at work with my Kindle hidden in my sweater.

It's a small office, with 4 companies sharing a single, tiny loo. It's a nice loo, as the psychologist that owns the building has decorated it as some sort of rainforest with enough candles in there to accidentally light oneself on fire if you don't wipe carefully.

Anyway, for DAYS I've been sneaking off to the bathroom to close the lid, sit on the loo and read more of Alora in the calming aromatherapy fire-hazard rainforest office toilet. Which is fine, but I was nearing the end and so ravenous to finish this book that this afternoon I completely forgot to lock the door.

Well.

The first guy knocked. "Occupied." He left.

The second woman rapped on the door with some urgency. "still occupied". I was beginning to worry that I may have to make up a story about a dodgy curry or something, but then figured that would be much more horrifying than the truth - so I said nothing. I would think of something after I finished. There was like, only 4% left.

The woman returned, rapping on the door. She said she was pregnant and really needed to use the loo. I responded that I would be right out, just another minute.

3% of the book left.

Oh holy hell, the ending. The ending! I didn't want it to end but I wanted to gain some sort of resolution and I felt bad about the pregnant woman and paranoid about people's perception of my bathroom usage..

2% left. Whatever, I would deal with it all when the book was finished.

Yet it was when, while reading the ending, I audibly yelled out a 'WHAT?!?" that the pregnant woman tried the door and opened it wide to find me sitting on the toilet fully clothed and clutching my Kindle like some sort of library-toilet fetishist. She burst in, knocking me off the loo in shock - and the two of us kind of wrangled around each other for me to get out and her to get in position as we tipped over a candle and lit a plastic plant on fire. I thought we would have bonded by showering down the plant in the bathtub and agreeing not to tell the psychologist about ANY of this, but no.

She's not speaking to me now.

I am holding Miss Linski and her completely captivating book completely responsible. I could NOT put the thing down.

I need to say this, that this book is fantastic like it's cover. Megan Linski has done an excellent work. This is a stand-alone novel, and first book i have ever read by this author. I really want to read more books by her.
The concept of Anmortals was very unique. I have never read anything like Anmortals before. I loved the protagonist Alora. Megan Linski has created the vision of Alora really beautiful. There is true love and action. It is the story of a sixteen year old teenage anmortal, Alora. She cares about a human guy, August. But, if she fell in love with him, she will become a human and mortal.
Alora is watching August growing up since he was a kid. When August turns sixteen, he and Alora fall in love. Alora gives up her immortality for him but she never shows her real form to August.
As she gave up her immortality in her animal form, so she is stuck in that form. On the other hand, a dangerous creature Windcomer is after Alora's soul. Now she can't face August, neither she wants her soul to be taken. But the ending is wow. Alora's identity will be revealed. But will August accept her? Can she beat the Windcomer?
The ending is awesome. In my opinion, I find Megan Linski a really nice author.

"A Whimsical Shifter love Story"
The story line is very imaginative. The characters are unique and charming. Alora is an anmortal. In the warm seasons she is a beautiful young woman, but during the winter she becomes a pearly white winged wolf. She is the only anmortal in her area. Most of the time she is not lonely as she has her horse Tanglemane to keep her company during the warm months. One day while out riding Tanglemane she hears a child giggle. She follows the sound to the river. There she sees a Father and his young toddler boy fishing on the river. Then another day she sees the young toddler at the river by him self. He falls in and Alora saves him . From that time on she keeps a watch over him. As the years pass Alora and August grow closer. But there is a legend of a Iron wolf called Windcomer who eats Anmortals and he gets his sights on Alora!.
This is an amazing Whimsical story of true love that has tons of Suspense. You will love it! It is a must read book!.

Rounding up from 3.5 stars.

The start of the book was a bit slow for me as the action happens in the last half of the book. I almost quit reading, but persevered. The story was definitely worth it and I'm glad I finished it.

It is not the standard shifter love story as Alora isn't your typical shifter. Honestly, it took me a while to warm up to her character. I loved absolutely loved her romantic interest, August. I actually found enjoyed the villain as well. I loved the names in this book: Alora, August, Tanglemane, Windcomer, Mikaisto, Agathi, and Mercia.

The writing was solid and I only found a couple of mistakes grammar-wise. Honestly, I think one of those was simply a typo/missing letter.

I would definitely recommend the book to others. In fact, while I was gifted a free copy for an honest review, I decided to purchase one as a way to help support the author. I see lots of potential here!

This story grabbed me right from the beginning....Alora living alone, left by her family. I really liked the differences between her spring/summer form and her winter form....I would love to be a winged wolf. I loved all the twists and turns between Alora & August....how she tried to deny being in love with him and her jealousy over Claret. The ending really took me by surprise as during the reading I really thought it would not end well for any of the characters. I will be on the lookout for more books by Ms. Linski in the future.

For hundreds of years, Alora has been queen. Ruling over the most remote regions of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, she spends her summers riding upon a wild stallion, her winters as a winged wolf, never aging, forever at an eternal sixteen.

This is what it means to be an Anmortal.

Centuries pass until the arrival of something new in the woods, a small boy named August. Alora watches through the years as the child grows into a young man. Slowly she finds herself falling for him, unable to tame her wild heart. Madly in love, she ignores the fact that humans and Anmortals can never be together...a mortal cannot love a creature that lives forever.

Distracted by romance, Alora doesn’t notice that there is a monster lurking in the shadows, a hunter who is determined to make Alora his prize. With no time left to run and no way out, Alora is about to make the most challenging decision of her life. What's more important...her true love, or her freedom?
Total Score: 4/5

Summary:
Out of the myths of the past, Alora is the last living Anmortal who resides in the forest where she reigns supreme. That is until humans comes and she finds herself looking after a young boy, August, who she finds fascinating. As the years go by, Alora watches the world and August age while she stays unchanged by time. As August ages Alora’s interest in August takes on a more personal interest, but can they find a way to overcome time itself?

As an Anmortal Alora does have one enemy a being called the Windcomer who she learned about as a child’s tale, but was so much more.

This was a fascinating fairy tale like story about growing up while adding magical twists that create their own problems. Imagine never growing old while everything around you changes. Alora began to see herself as the supreme leader of the forest and her fall fall from grace was difficult to watch. I really liked this story, but at times the outcome was predictable to see. Adding the Windcomer proved to be the ultimate test for Alora and August as the struggled to all the complications of Alora Being an Anmortal caused.

The feeling I felt when I was done with this book was confusion.

Not to say that the book wasn't good, it was. The writing style was not my thing, it sometimes felt poetic for the sole reason to extend the beauty of it all.

We follow Alora a headstrong and prideful anmortal, who is a girl in the summer and as soon as the first snow falls she turns into a white wolf with wings. Alora falls in love with a human boy named August. She watches him grow up and when he reaches the age of 16 she finally bonds with him. Alora knows that as an anmortal she can not love the boy, yet she does. Giving up her anmortality to be with this boy.

Underneath it all, you also have the villain; windcomer who seeks Aloras anmortality. He does not only want to devour her anmortality, but he wants more from her, since she is the last of her kind.

Right from the beginning, I was sucked into this book. I listened to the audiobook in one day.

You will fall in love with Alora and August. And their love surpasses everything.

****Spoiler****
Alora is an Anmortal, the last anmortal. She saves August when he is a small boy, from drowning. She watched August as he grows, and finds that she has done the unthinkable, she has fallen in love with a human. As time goes by, August also falls in love with her.

There is a creature called the Windcomer. He has spent years killing all of the anmortals, but he is intrigued by Alora. He offers her mortality if she will give him her soul in exchange for a life with August. She refuses.

She battles the Windcomer, along with August and his sister, Clorret. Clorret was once an anmortal but gave her anmortality up for a boy who did not love her back. Together, the three defeated the Windcomer.

August refuses to let Alora give up her anmortality for him. Instead, he gives up his mortality to become an anmortal.

I absolutely loved this tale and I highly recommend this book. I look forward to reading more of Megan Linski's work.

This book had so much potential! My all time top 2 favorite books are 1. A wolf fantasy and 2. A Pegasus fantasy. So having them combined sounded like my ultimate dream come true, especially since it takes place in the U.P. Which where I live!

First off this book is being advertised as young adult, this writing is 100% middle grade. So maybe in 10 years if I have a daughter she’ll scroll through my kindle library and want to read this, I’m sure she’ll give it 5 out of 5 stars being a middle grade aged reader.

This cover is absolutely gorgeous, and the synopsis sounds epic. But sadly there is very little context when she is in wolf form reminding us that she’s a wolf. So it basically felt like she was a human throughout 90% of the story. Also the Windcomer could have been so many magical things but he was a machine? Really? A transformer Villain? What kind animal mortal or not is suppose to fight a machine?! I am very disappointed with everything about this story, I was expecting so much more.

I went into this story anticipating an epic paranormal romance but instead I would call this a fantasy about a very powerful, fairly self centered immortal girl/woman who stalks a little boy and decides she wants him- enough to attempt to steal him as a child and then pursue a romance when he is a teenager (and he knows nothing about her!). The book was really quick so I listened to it in a day but I struggled with liking the main character (and sometimes the plot/villain was confusing). This also ended very abrupt, as if it was missing the rest of the story. I assumed this was a standalone when I started the book but it can't be since there was zero resolution.

All that being said, I love this author and have read multiple series by her and plan to read more in the future, I just don't think this one was for me. I am sure others will love this very unique world the author created so if you like different kinds of paranormal creatures maybe give this a go.

A fascinating, T&YA paranormal & urban fantasy. Alora is an immortal. She stopped aging when she reached sixteen, millennia ago. Her race scatters to live alone or in couples when they reach this age. Hence, she is alone when August and his family move into her remote region. When she befriends him, her thoughts stray to her loneliness.

Megan Linski does a good job of wrapping folklore and romance styles together in this title, including struggles from each genre. The journey gets mildly harsh along the way. But, inevitably, the tale comes to a satisfying end.

Entertaining. Great world building. Happily Ever After. Romantic. Scary. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Whimsical. Wonderful characters.

I really enjoyed the story. I actually read/ listen to it in one sitting, getting caught up in the plot. It was a beautiful teenage romance story. The fantasy element was unique and original, making for an exciting read. Alora's character was fun and independent. August was a cute and caring boy. Both characters were very likable and easy to root for. There was danger, betrayal and love. This romantic fantasy was very enjoyable and a lil sad 😥 in a small part. The narrator also did a good job making me feel all the emotions

My name is literally so weird and I found a book with a title that is my name. I had to read it! I kind of expected it to be cringe, but it was pretty entertaining (and a little amusing LOL). I just wish it wasn't so predictable. The book was more on the short side and I feel like if more details were added then it wouldn't be so predictable.

Alora by Megan Linkski

Alora is a high fantasy, adventure, romance kind of book. Megan Linski's writing style was quite enjoyable and had its own uniqueness to it. Her writing could also be suitable for younger readers because it is straight forward and easily understood. Also the cover is absolutely stunning and it really captures the eye!

The concept of Alora was very unique and quite intriguing because it tells us the story of a creature called an anmortal whose name is Alora. An anmortal is a creature similar to a human but time doesn't matter to them because they live forever. Each anmortal is different in a way that each of them stop ageing at different ages and Alora stopped ageing when she turned 16. She has ruled of over her forest for hundreds of years and all the creatures know and fear her greatness, but one day she sees a little human boy who lives in her forest. She watches him grow up into a man and she slowly falls in love with him. But anmortals can never fall in love with a humans which leads to life threatening situations. But most of all, she must protect not only him, but also herself from a beast that is known and feared by all anmortals, the Windcomer.

I believe that Alora was a loveable character and she would definitely be someone that I would like to meet. In the beginning, her confidence and sureness of her power didn't come off as being cocky or anything, I found her personality refreshing and I was very convinced that she was truly feared and had this power over the land. She can be playful at times but she still knows her limits. She knows what her responsibilities are, but she pushed all of that aside just do August, which shows us how much she treasures her loved ones, and that she can be very affectionate. I think she became a true hero at the end of the book and was a very good protagonist all in all.

Overall I gave this book a 4.5 stars and I definitely didn't regret reading this book. I really love reading books that aren't as well known and I enjoyed this book. There weren't any things that i disliked but it only didn't receive a full 5 because I personally wouldn't usually read these kinds of books but I didn't know how much I would love it. I especially loved the connection with her and August because their love was so bittersweet. I also love how she is an anmortal, and the fact that she transforms into a wolf with wings when winter comes because I thought it was very fascinating. The entire plot was very unique and all the elements all fit in nicely. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I would recommend it for anyone who wants a quick fantasy read with some romance. I really hope this book will be successful and thank you Megan Linski for writing such an amazing book!

The story starts as a light, fanciful tale as Alora flits around in her selfish, magical world of being an Anmortal. But as the years progress, she starts feeling seeds of loneliness and doubt. Is she the only Annortal left? Is the Windcomer real, or just a myth? And if he is real, will he devour her too? Megan does a wonderful job depicting the world that Alora lives in. I really enjoyed the winter seasons, when she would turn into her winged-wolf form. Megan’s descriptions of how Alora feels while in her wolf-form makes you feel a part of her as she’s soaring over the tree tops, hungry for prey.

Then she runs across August, and her life is changed forever. August is a small boy when Alora first meets him, but as the years pass, she finds herself drawn to the human boy. I really didn’t quite get what she saw in August, I couldn’t connect with him at all. He has a wishy-washy personality, sorta like a Charlie Brown. His personality changed, depending on the people he surrounded himself with. I also didn’t like the relationship between him & his mother, and then at the end, his mother and father get back together again. Too fairy tale for me.

When this story turned dark, and Alora found herself stuck in her wolf-form, I got upset and put this story away for awhile. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it struck a nerve in me. So good job, Megan. You made me feel an emotional response to the plight of your character. I also liked the interplay between Alora and Windcomer. I wasn’t really sure what Windcomer’s motives were. Did he really want to devour her, or was he in love with her? Their relationship was oddly appealing to me. Once I got past the dark-side of Alora, and she grew to realize what her destiny was, the rest of the story was pretty predictable.

Here are my major points of contention. Even though this is a fantasy world, the author still has to follow laws of physics. How could Tanglemane pass through the briar patch in front of Alora’s cave, when August couldn’t? Windcomer wreaked havoc in the woods, flattening trees as he went. Why didn’t any humans notice him, or for that matter, that Alora never aged? When Alora, August and Claret are fighting Windomer on the island, how could Claret climb back down a steep cliff with a severely injured leg. After Alora and August climbed up that steep cliff, there was suddenly a small boat, next to Claret’s head. How did they get it back down the cliff? These types of implausible actions caused me to jump out of the story.

In spite of the above, I did enjoy the story and recommend it for anyone who loves fairy tales with a HEA. I give it 4 feathers.

I was drawn to this book by its cover. The cover is gorgeous as you all can see. However the contents of this book didn't match up to the beauty of the cover for me.

Here was my main problem with the book. The protagonist. Alora is just completely unlikeable to me. She is so vain she could pass for a villain in any number of Disney movies. The following is a passage from the book where Alora contemplates if she is the last Anmortal:

How could I doubt that I am alone? My kind is so brilliant, it's impossible that we could all be gone. What could kill us? I am certainly the prettiest of them all, but even with their average looks the other Anmortals are wise enough to keep themselves alive. I know I am.

Wow really Alora? I get it. She is supposed to be this miraculous gift from the Heavens. Beautiful, strong, and perfect. But after several passages like the one above I really truly began to root against her. I don't mind strong heroines but I don't need to be constantly reminded how perfect they are. Besides, Alora is far from perfect anyway.

And then there was the male lead August. What a whiny little brat. He and Alora really were meant for each other I suppose. They had a classic we-fight-all-the-time-but-we-are-so-much-in-love-we-will-give-you-diabetes relationship. They have so many inane disputes that I began to wonder why exactly this is considered a desired relationship. August and Alora take dysfunctional to the next level.

Which brings us to the villain. The Windcomer. Not too bad of a villain actually. Diabolical and calculating...but has weaknesses. I wasn't too disappointed with him.

I am being hard on this book but I really liked the mythology behind it. An immortal heroine who turns into a wolf with wings during the winter season? Sign me up. I am just disappointed in the story's lack of depth. The storytelling is lackluster. The first few chapters held promise for me. The writing is pretty strong and the writer paints a vivid picture of the surroundings. There are a few editing errors around but nothing that was too distracting.

In the end though I am all about character development. I have to care about what happens to the characters. I just couldn't sympathize with these characters...except for maybe Claret who appears later in the story. I wanted to like this book but I couldn't give it more than two stars. 2.5 stars because of the amazing cover.

After reading the description, I was very excited to get into this. I was intrigued by the idea of the Anmortals; not only beautiful with eternal souls, but a second form for half the year. Alora's animal form was a majestic wolf with white swan wings. Not only can she roam the frosty terrain of Michigan's upper peninsula, but she can fly over the great lakes as well. Oh! And when she is human in the summer, she rides around the forest on her horse companion, Tanglemane! Pretty cool, right?

I just wish there had been more of them. As far as Anmortals go, Alora is pretty much it. There is one short flashback to her days with her Anmortal family, but that only left me wanting more. At first, Alora was not a character I could connect with easily. Because of her Anmortal status, she is gorgeous, unbreakable, overconfident, and a teensy bit arrogant. Basically flawless. She spends nearly a century wandering around by herself, away from humans and modern society.

Until she meets a boy.

For the first half of the book, the only real characters in the story are Alora and August. During the phase where they fell in love, the tantalizing descriptions kept me reading, but not much else. I felt like I my arm was brushing against pine needles and it was my toes that were squishing mud between them. But I just wish there had been some other characters, conflict, something....

Luckily, right smack dab in the middle of the book, things got interesting. FAST. Alora was thrown out of her element and into a world with technology and crowds of the humans she had stayed far away from her whole life. I actually remember the exact second I sat up and was like,"Yes! Okay, this is getting good." From there on out, the story was chuck full of character development, hard choices, a few twists, and a nasty villain. Linski breaks down her flawless character to the bottom of a soggy pit so that she can attempt to claw her way out. I very much enjoyed her journey and the peculiar relationship she develops with the antagonist. The ending had just the right amount of suspense and drama. I only wish somehow the beginning of the book could have somehow been more exciting like this!

I worry that some readers with less patience and less appreciation for elegant descriptive writing will give up on this daring story. Alora has shown me that sometimes it takes time to build up to something worth while. I was very happy I finished this book.

Wolf she was indeed,

but she was so much more. She was free. Alora wasn’t afraid. She was Anmortal… I have to say that I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this book, aside from the blurb, but with such a beautiful cover to go with said blurb, I knew I just had to read it!! While the storyline itself was very unique and interesting, I had to clamp down on my inner cynic until I got used to the overly flowery descriptions...of everything! But then the further in I read, the more I got sucked into the story, which in turn then sucked my inner cynic into the story too, I realized just how almost magical the wording was and how it fit this story perfectly! THIS PART I WROTE WHILE READING THE BOOK: I know Alora is this beautiful creation with so many unique traits & abilities - like becoming a wolf with swan wings in the winter months, but I did find her a little too high on herself. I found her to be a touch shallow in an innocent way - your beauty, your arrogance. A true Anmortal - but that just makes her harder to relate to, connect with. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and would recommend it as long as you treat it as a 'lighter' read. It is a rich story with the descriptions & details that make it so easy to picture everything in your mind, but it is not a deep or a "heavy/all-consuming" type of read by any means! Regardless, it IS a story worth reading which is why I gave it a higher rating, especially since I read it all in one go! Just because it isn't quite what I was expecting isn't any reason to rate it harshly. NOW THAT I AM FINISHED: WOW!! This book took its time grabbing me, but when it finally did IT NEVER LET GO! I am utterly amazed at how the last third or so changed to become the story I WAS EXPECTING! A FANTASTIC STORY!! It shocked me to the core at how it all turned out! So many different, unexpected but yet exciting twists & turns!! I recommend this to ANYONE who enjoys a great fairy tale/mythology type of story that completely transforms the further into the story that you read & sink into. (although I do want to point out that the length of the book is only around 90-100 pages, not the 286 listed on Amazon & Goodreads. I think that is the print edition.) I am eager to read more from the very creative & wonderfully talented author, Megan Linski!!
