Turning the envelope over, his hand trembling, Harry saw a purple wax seal bearing a coat of arms; a lion, an eagle, a badger and a snake surrounding a large letter 'H.’
Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!
Having become classics of our time, the Harry Potter stories never fail to bring comfort and escapism. With their message of hope, belonging and the enduring power of truth and love, the story of the Boy Who Lived continues to delight generations of new listeners.
See also: Robert Galbraith Although she writes under the pen name J.K. Rowling, pronounced like rolling, her name when her first Harry Potter book was published was simply Joanne Rowling. Anticipating that the target audience of young boys might not want to read a book written by a woman, her publishers demanded that she use two initials, rather than her full name. As she had no middle name, she chose K as the second initial of her pen name, from her paternal grandmother Kathleen Ada Bulgen Rowling. She calls herself Jo and has said, "No one ever called me 'Joanne' when I was young, unless they were angry." Following her marriage, she has sometimes used the name Joanne Murray when conducting personal business. During the Leveson Inquiry she gave evidence under the name of Joanne Kathleen Rowling. In a 2012 interview, Rowling noted that she no longer cared that people pronounced her name incorrectly.
Rowling was born to Peter James Rowling, a Rolls-Royce aircraft engineer, and Anne Rowling (née Volant), on 31 July 1965 in Yate, Gloucestershire, England, 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Bristol. Her mother Anne was half-French and half-Scottish. Her parents first met on a train departing from King's Cross Station bound for Arbroath in 1964. They married on 14 March 1965. Her mother's maternal grandfather, Dugald Campbell, was born in Lamlash on the Isle of Arran. Her mother's paternal grandfather, Louis Volant, was awarded the Croix de Guerre for exceptional bravery in defending the village of Courcelles-le-Comte during the First World War.
Rowling's sister Dianne was born at their home when Rowling was 23 months old. The family moved to the nearby village Winterbourne when Rowling was four. She attended St Michael's Primary School, a school founded by abolitionist William Wilberforce and education reformer Hannah More. Her headmaster at St Michael's, Alfred Dunn, has been suggested as the inspiration for the Harry Potter headmaster Albus Dumbledore.
As a child, Rowling often wrote fantasy stories, which she would usually then read to her sister. She recalls that: "I can still remember me telling her a story in which she fell down a rabbit hole and was fed strawberries by the rabbit family inside it. Certainly the first story I ever wrote down (when I was five or six) was about a rabbit called Rabbit. He got the measles and was visited by his friends, including a giant bee called Miss Bee." At the age of nine, Rowling moved to Church Cottage in the Gloucestershire village of Tutshill, close to Chepstow, Wales. When she was a young teenager, her great aunt, who Rowling said "taught classics and approved of a thirst for knowledge, even of a questionable kind," gave her a very old copy of Jessica Mitford's autobiography, Hons and Rebels. Mitford became Rowling's heroine, and Rowling subsequently read all of her books.
Rowling has said of her teenage years, in an interview with The New Yorker, "I wasn’t particularly happy. I think it’s a dreadful time of life." She had a difficult homelife; her mother was ill and she had a difficult relationship with her father (she is no longer on speaking terms with him). She attended secondary school at Wyedean School and College, where her mother had worked as a technician in the science department. Rowling said of her adolescence, "Hermione [a bookish, know-it-all Harry Potter character] is loosely based on me. She's a caricature of me when I was eleven, which I'm not particularly proud of." Steve Eddy, who taught Rowling English when she first arrived, remembers her as "not exceptional" but "one of a group of girls who were bright, and quite good at English." Sean Harris, her best friend in the Upper Sixth owned a turquoise Ford Anglia, which she says inspired the one in her books.
Audiobook (8 hours 41 minutes) narrated by a huge full cast, fully scored) Publisher: Pottermore Publishing and Audible Studios (Audible only)
This is a full, full, full cast narration. The narration is excellent. The audio is flawless, including all of the excellent sound effects and musical accompaniments. The sounds and music at always at or below the vocal narration. If they need to create excitement or mood, they start low so that 'loud' sounds are obviously loud but not loud to the ears, as in the volume never goes above what you set for the vocal narration. These effects are always complimentary to the scene, never competing for attention while fully setting, solidifying, or otherwise identifying the scene, scenery, or other aspects of the character, the world, or the story itself. They did an awesome and meticulous job in all areas of sound, with many individuals involved. Audible and Pottermore Publishing has gone all out. They have a full cast list at the end of the book, which I listened too in full with dozens if not hundreds of names. The cast list is enormous. They list not only the narrators of the main characters, but even the unnamed characters. Audible includes the names of the casting directors, musicians, realistically I cannot think of all of the titles but they list everyone involved in the process from the casting to the narrators to the sound technicians and different assistants. It really is the fullest list I have ever seen on an audiobook. I am impressed. Everyone who works on such a process deserves an acknowledgement, and sometimes it is difficult to find even a cast list anywhere never mind a thank you and acknowledgment of a school who was involved, such as in this one. As the list is so long, I am not going to translate it to print, however, if you do pick up a copy, and if you are a fan, I suggest you strongly consider it, do please take the time to listen to the very end and hear just how many people were involved in this fantastic project. For all of those who were involved, thank you! Your hard work and effort shows.
This is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The story is the same story that is in print or previously narrated by either Jim Dale(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Dale), for the American version, or Stephen Fry, for those in the UK. Previously it had been difficult to pick up a narrated version that was not intended for your region, however Audible did introduce the available of whichever narrator you prefer a couple of years ago. I previously wrote a review of the Jim Dale audiobook narration: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... It is also excellent.
It is difficult and not fair to compare the three narrative choices, mostly because the single voiced narrators very much used the voices of the movie to create a narrative that was more complete than the movie, obviously as it was the full book, but also felt right as everything was pretty similar.
This new full cast is made up of actors who are interpreting their character and creating the narrative of that solo character based on the book, and perhaps their experience with the source material and other outside influences. It took me a minute to acclimate to the new voices, however, once I allowed myself to be curious about who these new characters were (old friends with new attitudes and faces), I quickly enjoyed what was in front of me. It is so well done, I have to think that J.K. Rowling has got to be pleased... Let me look and see if I can find any comments by her on this project. Well, there are several articles, mostly on when it will be released and whatnot, but within all of the advertising and hype it says that Rowling worked closely with the production team, collaborating with them and that she found the new series to be a complement to the existing books. So, sounds good!
Generally the differences that you are going to find is that instead of the narrator talking about say the sound and speed of Hagrid's motorbike, the bike will be mentioned but the scoring will cover the sound and you will hear the speed and whatnot behind the narration so that it becomes an immersive experience instead of a separate detail.
As a fan, I am in for the full series. The first book was released on November 4, with the remaining books of the series being released one per month until all have been released. As you can see I read the full new book by the next day. I enjoyed it so much!
If you grew up knowing the movies by heart but never quite made it to the books (hi, it’s me 🙋♀️), the new full-cast audiobook is honestly the perfect way to finally dive in.
The voice actors are fantastic — every character has their own distinct voice, and it adds this warmth and charm that feels both nostalgic and totally fresh.
The sound effects and music are extra in the best possible way, turning familiar scenes into a cozy little cinematic experience for your ears.
It’s immersive, beautifully produced, and genuinely made me feel like I was stepping into the wizarding world for the first time all over again. I absolutely ate it up. ⚡️📖✨
There’s something wonderfully strange about returning to a book you first read decades ago. It’s like visiting an old friend who somehow looks exactly the same but now tells their stories with Dolby Atmos and a cast of hundreds.
Revisiting this world reminded me why these stories endure: hope, friendship, belonging, and the quiet, stubborn power of love in dark times. This edition captures all of that while adding a cinematic layer that makes it feel like you’re truly living inside the moments.
My Quick Takes: - 5/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Genre 📚 Middle Grade Fantasy - Language 🤐 one use of d*mn, insults - Spice ❤️🔥 none - Content 🤔 past death of parents, neglect, bullying, blood drinking
What a fantastic excuse to reread this series! The full cast audio is absolute perfection 👏🏼
It’s fully scored, has continual sound effects throughout, different voices for every single character, no matter how minor, and so much more. I listened on my noise cancelling headphones and it was so immersive. Some scenes even have the audio going back and forth from ear to ear.
I read Harry Potter for the first time as an adult, but it’s been 10 yrs ago now, and I’ve been itching to reread. I always knew I wanted to do the audiobooks but having the full cast option now truly seemed like I was listening to the movies. I forgot about so many fun details throughout, what a fun option to have when visiting the magical world of Harry Potter.
I usually listen at audiobooks sped up. I listened to this at 1.5x and was still able to fully enjoy the sound effects and background noises. Any faster and it felt like I lost all those wonderfully produced details. Highly recommend this as an audiobook option and can’t wait for the next ones!
I read this book for the first time when I was 9 years old. I had loved the Harry Potter movies, so I wanted to give the books a whirl as well. I wasn’t much of a reader at the time, but I naturally started with the Sorcerer’s Stone and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Fast forward 8 years later to my senior year in high school, and this book is just as fantastic now as it was then. J.K. Rowling’s writing style and the world of Harry Potter in general is of course not for everyone, but this series will always hold a special place in my heart.
If you’ve never picked up a Harry Potter book, I highly suggest trying it out if you’re even a tiny bit interested!
Y’all!! I’m so impressed with this audio book!! The full cast edition is impeccable! I cannot wait til they are all released!!! I’m not an audio book person at all, but could you imagine if they were all like this?
Listened to on our Christmas family road trip. This was great! Hugh Laurie as Dumbledore was a treat. Some voices were almost too similar to the movie actors for me, as I wanted a new experience. But then some were way off. Snape sounded about 25 years old and not particularly menacing, but Alan Rickman is a hard act to follow. I liked the music a lot but my ten year old said it was too scary 🤷🏻♀️
The rating is for the audible production, not the story. Harry Potter will always be a 5 star for me.
Cozy, but the background sounds were annoying at times, and the constant moaning/groaning/huffing/puffing really put me off. I’ve listened to a few other books with full cast and Dolby atmos sound and they’ve been far better balanced. Much prefer reading the book myself or listening to Fry read it. I’ll probably listen to the next and see if the production is better…
Da var jeg ferdig med den første Harry Potter boka nok en gang! Den var like fantastisk nå også, og kombinasjonen av lydboken, lest av Stephen Fry, og den illustrerte utgaven gjorde leseopplevelsen enda mer fantastisk!
I absolutely loved this audiobook!! All of the voices, sound effects, and music was so well done. Completely transports you into the world and is so magical ✨ I can’t wait for the rest of them!
[This review is for the full-cast audio edition only, the book itself a certified five-star read for me]
Riz Ahmed as Snape is beyond amazing. His voice and his acting skills are insanely on-point, there's so much new life he brought into the character it's not even funny. Will I have to listen to the entire series now to get more of that??
Hugh Laurie as Dumbledore is another brilliant decision. He's so unlike the movie versions but the playful tone he picked is so much closer to what I've always imagined. He's ridiculous and I love him.
Jude Farrant as Draco Malfoy was having so much fun I could easily belive he wasn't doing it for the money, but for the love of the game alone, always giving 120%, unafraid to sound like an ass all the time. I appreciate your dedication to not being cool, sir!
The main trio are admittedly a very safe cast, too wary of straying too far from what everyone is used to, but Max Lester as Ron brought me so much joy. Us Ron fans know mostly pain and suffering, and hearing Ron say what he should, as he should, is incredible.
Why the 4 stars then? I don't know how y'all stand the full audio experience where everyone is constantly grunting and growling and sneering and making all sorts of dumb little sounds in the background like NPCs from old platformer games. It's so distracting! This is also the American text, with "sorcerer's stone" instead of "philosopher's", and that's just embarrassing, imo.
I have done this story in every possible format. Physical book. The Jim Dale audiobook. The movies on an unhealthy loop. I went into this fully convinced there was nothing left to discover.
And yet.
This almost felt like a new experience. There were so many moments where I caught myself thinking wait… was this always here? Did they add this? They did not. The text is the same. What changed is how the full cast brings it to life. Lines that once slipped by suddenly land. Background details sparkle. Minor scenes feel fuller and more intentional. It is like the story stepped out from the page and started breathing.
The Full Cast Edition adds a layer of magic that is hard to explain until you hear it. Multiple voices, music, atmosphere, timing. It sharpens the humor, deepens the emotion, and makes Hogwarts feel genuinely alive rather than remembered. Familiar scenes hit differently when they are acted rather than read.
It reminded me why this book became what it became. Not just the plot, but the feeling. The wonder. The comfort. The sense that you are being invited into something bigger than yourself.
Five stars, easily. Proof that even the most revisited stories can still surprise you when they are told the right way.
Confession time, I was one of those people who had only ever watched the movies. I know, where have I been? But I finally listened to the full-cast audiobook, and wow. Even though I knew the plot, I was completely enthralled. The production is top-tier. It’s less like someone reading to you and more like a movie for your ears. I actually got goosebumps at the end!
I love the Harry Potter series! I usually stick to the movies, so it’s been so fun revisiting the story through the books. The full-cast audio version was incredibly well done and truly felt magical with all the effects and music. I really enjoyed experiencing Harry Potter again in a completely new way.
Wow this was so so so good!!!!!! I was blown away. All the voice actors were sheer perfection I felt like I was IN the book living the story. 1000/1000 recommend!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Stephen Fry's remains the best Harry Potter narration ever. Don't get me wrong, the performance was good, but not as good as when Mr. Fry is doing it, I mean the man alone is a whole cast 😅. But overall, it was a good experience and I'll be listening to the next one soon enough.
