The flame-haired virago bearing down on Ross MacKenna was far too shapely to be a seasoned warrior, but she was just as deadly. As she engaged him on the battlefield, Ross knew her for a MacKay, long-time enemies of his clan. What he didn't know was that she would soon be his wife, given to him by her father in a desperate effort to end generations of feuding. The only problem was that of all her family, Gillian MacKay was the least willing to make peace. Whether in bed or out, her fiery temper challenged his mastery while her lush body taunted his masculinity. Both politics and pride demanded that he tame her, but would do it in his way -- with a scorching seduction that would sweep away her defenses and win her heart.

A verra verra bad book, I doona recommend it. That is, unless you like a silly plot along with very bad sex all wrapped up in a faux historical setting. Granted, there are readers who enjoy that type of book and while I'm not knocking them I am definitely not one of them. You are not going to get your Jamie and Claire fix here, although September is almost upon us and the long wait for An Echo in the Bone will soon be over. Yay!
This is pretty much your basic Highland romance - Laird MacKay wishing to end a decades long feud gives his daughter Gillian in marriage to the Laird of the rival MacKenna clan. Gillian is as fiery and spirited as her red mane of hair and hates her husband Ross on sight, despite the overwhelming sexual attraction between the two. Of course there are the evil bad guys (and gal) who want to keep them apart for their own nefarious purposes and well, that's pretty much it. Gee, how original, and I have to tell you It was verra verra hard not to send the book flying every time I heard about Gillian's flame red hair (six times in 20 some pages), let alone the "flame" comments from the wise woman. Despite an effort to make the setting seem authentic with the dialogue, clothing and customs, things just didn't always ring true. Tossing Gillian out on her ear to return to Da in the middle of winter with no escort? Telling her husband to "leave off"? Potatoes in 1415? Oy.
But worst of all, as mentioned at the top, were the OTT sex scenes in minute, embarrassing, and oh so disgusting detail. So bad I can't even bear to quote a few to poke fun at them - and after what I read in That-Tudor-Vampire-Book I have to tell you that's pretty darn bad. Skip this, I wish I had.
Ross MacKenna is a highland laird, and a warrior. Gillian MacKay is a sassy feisty warrior who hates Ross and his clan. They have been feuding for years. Gillian's father thinks the best way to end this war is for his daughter to marry Ross. They get married, at first Gillian hates Ross but soon she realizes her hatred is misplaced. Their old loves are causing so much trouble but true love thrives. Arranged forced marriage, kidnappings, misunderstandings, jealousy, evil OW, evil OM, angst, pregnancy and adventure make this a great read. Definitely a keeper! :)
My first Connie Mason and I really enjoyed it. I have picked up quite a few of her books lately as Amazon freebies so will definitely find the time to read them.....Full review to follow
I went through the first 40% very quickly. There is not much content, just people shouting and being angry at each other plus some supposedly hot sex scenes. My hands itched the entire time. I want to slap the heroine so badly. I am surprised that no one did. I never could tolerate anybody throwing fits because things don't go their ways. I would have done something very drastic if I were her parents. I could have continued reading because I imagine once she is "in love" it gets better. But I hated Gillian so much. I stopped reading to spite her. I know, I know, she is just a character. But you can't just give in to a child who is throwing tantrum. So I walked away. God save us from such crazy heroines. Please woman, instead of going crazy because of emotions, learn logic and use your brain. Being angry is ok and all but must you act like a nut too? I would have given it 1 star but I know I am biased because I so despised the heroine. I decided to go up 1 star.
Well, good news, is that the heroine didn't end up on my "heroines who annoy me shelf". She came close though. Her attitude cleared up rather quickly, in fact. It was pretty sudden. It must have been all the hot loving her new husband was giving to her.
At times I felt very frustrated with both characters. Not a great deal of trust on either side. That got annoying.
Decent read by Connie Mason but I've read better from her.
Ross MacKenna is a strong, mighty, highland laird, and a warrior. Gillian MacKay is a strong, feisty, stubborn, beauty, who thinks she's a warrior. The MacKenna's and MacKay's have been feuding for years and Ross want's it stopped, so they must marry. I enjoyed this book very much, old loves were constantly trying to cause them trouble, it was a great read.
H and h are enemies because they belong to different clans that have been fighting for a century. In the latest battle h loses two brothers and distraught at this loss her father decides to resolve the feud by marrying her to H. h is a feisty warrior who can't imagine laying with the enemy and makes every effort to dodge the marriage. However, the marriage bed brings them closer and she begins to see H as her husband and starts loving him. I loved how fierce H was and ruthless in claiming his bride and showing her how good things can be with the feud behind them. h doesn't relinquished her feisty and take-initiative nature but grows into it with frequently seducing H during their fight. Some of the best parts of the book.
The love scenes are scalding hot in the wintry settings and you once again appreciate how better Ms Mason is at including them. Though I was disappointed at the lack of intimacy during middle parts due to estrangement and disagreements. In my previous read Ms Mason books, the primal nature trumped disagreements and this is what made her one of my favorites.
The old crone, a favorite fixture of Ms Mason, was surprisingly poorly treated throughout. There was also a lack of secondary character romance which I prefer in these books as there are so many opportunities for good pairings.
The villains are unfortunately very devious in this one. One is the jilted presumed groom to h and other is H's leman, scottish for mistress. But I have started to grow a soft spot for some of Ms Mason's villains as often they're fighting for something which would've been natural had H and h not met. I wish most of them to be settled amicably, but sadly I can't recall it happening in any book.

YOU WILL LIKE THIS BOOK IF YOU LIKE: How clans stop fighting and killing each other and the way that they are brought together. Major bad guys always running around with one plan after the other to achieve a major goal. One person that hates the other but ends up being involved with the other. The woman who continuously sees what others cannot see and gives warnings but in most cases is ignored and not taken seriously.
FOUR STARS because once again did not reach to the level of my favorite authors, Hannah Howell and Alexandra Ivy. (
"Highland Warrior," published in 2007 and set in the Scottish Highlands, is one of the best historical romances that I have come across.
It begins with a battle, the young, Ross MacKenna, the laird of the MacKenna clan is battling a high-strung Gillian MacKay of the rival MacKay clan. She is good with a sword but not as good as Ross. He manages to fend off her attacks while not inflicting damage on the spirited lass. "I doona kill women," Ross says.
Gillian's father, Tearlach MacKay, laird of the rival MacKay clan proposes an end to the century-old blood feud between the clans. He offers his daughter to MacKenna.
Ross agrees that there has been too much bloodshed and agrees to wed Gillian...with conditions. Gillian and Ross make a great couple. (The beserker tames the hellion.) But there are sinister forces at work who are trying to break their union, and the treaty between the clans.
Mason keeps the conflict going strong with many plot twists, providing a pleasantly unpredictable tale. I had to purchase on Amazon.com as it was no longer available at my local Borders. (romance.reviewer@yahoo.com)
A surprisingly well-written page turner! I wanted to knock Gillian upside the head the first half of the book and do the same to Ross the second half of the book. They are both wonderful complex characters and the storyline keeps one engrossed until the last page. The only downside, for me anyway, was the sex scenes. Although I can skip them easily enough, it gets annoying after the first 2 or 3.
This historical romance was all right. It had a common theme about two feuding highland clans. The hero and heroine's love-hate relation swung too far to the extremes. It was a reread and forgettable. McKay clan leader's daughter Gillian is given as wife to enemy clan leader Ross to end long time feud.
I just stumbled upon this one.. at first this book engaged me..'twas written several years ago.. and plot to me was quite interesting.. admittedly I liked how the author writes.. but then pages upon pages of a lot of ridiculous eye rolling scenes happened.. but still I proceeded.. then I was done.. deal breaker, the asshole stupid stubborn hero.. never mind a reckless stupid heroine.
Well I could understand the hero is a tough warrior with loads of testosterone and pride residing in his muscled body.. sadly nothing resides in his head.. upper head to be exact.. or maybe during those times, women were really merely just regarded as plain human beings to warm their sheets with nothing more to offer and be dumped if men tire of them or be accused of a misdeed.. I admire how the heroine has broken this notion.. but then she did things to assert a truth that yeah, she might be stupid too after all .. I wouldn't even call it reckless for lack of a better word.. and also, this is a romance book my goodness.. how many times could a hero be a jerk to a heroine to the point of irredeemable to a reader? well at least to me.
I could have liked this book if not for the latest stunts of the hero and heroine I've read.. hero was irredeemable for me as a reader no matter how he justified his actions in his stupid head.
With regard to Gizela, the old crone, I think she's the wisest, only interesting character and the one who's not stupid in this book.. imagine despite her many warnings that really happened, despite them starting to believe her and seeking her out for confidences, then when she tells them, they shoo her away not believing her.. who are the stupid ones? so frustrating.
Still, I like how the author writes despite, rest her soul.. she reminds me of my historical reads of long time ago.. I kind of feel nostalgic.. I'll check out her other works hoping to find a male hero deserving of my interest and of the heroine.. and of a heroine with some sense in her head not a heroine attempting to be brave and fierce to the point of being stupid.. forgive me for the redundancy of the word "stupid".. but I couldn't help myself.. so many stupid scenes I've read.. okay enough😛.
DRAMA, DRAMA, DRAMA. I LOVED IT. THIS WAS A CLASSIC HIGHLANDER ROMANCE WITH THE TYPICAL JEALOUSY PLOT, MISTRESS BEING THE BAD GUY AND WARRING FAMILIES WHO MARRY FOR THE SAKE OF PEACE - AN ENEMIES TO LOVERS TROUPE.
ROSS is a typical highlander laird who is having a feud with another highland family - the McKays. The story opens upon a battlefield and both sides have seen too much loss. Soon, the McKay laird reaches out to Ross and offers his daughter's hand in marriage in order to seal a treaty between the clans. Ross would have laughed, except this might just be the only way no matter how reluctant he is. When he meets his flame-haired bride, he's intrigued and almost immediately taken but her sharp tongue leaves him uncertain if this is a good idea. The story is riddle with several superstitious moments, coupled with a wizen old healer, a scheming mistress, two stubborn main characters fueled by passion and a dose of drama to keep the story going. Ross tames his wife the only way he knows how, in the marriage bed and it takes a pretty damn long time to build trust between the two, because lack of trust was the reason why so many shit went down between Ross and Gillian.
GILLIAN is a brave and headstrong albeit stubborn lass. She insists of fighting men with her swords and challenges men to fight her one-on-one in order to defend her own pride. I could see from a mile away that Ross will be having his hands full. Gillian's not happy with her father's decision to wed her to the enemy and she doesn't make it easy for Ross. Prickly as a porcupine, and tongue as sharp as a dagger, she's a veritable shrew who can only be tamed in the arms of passion. While Gillian may claim to loathe her husband only because she's been blindsided by her clan's rage towards Ross's, she starts to fall for her husband as her new reality sets in and matures into a sensible woman at least, no longer spouting murder.
OVERALL this one entertained me highly. After finishing 3 Connie Mason stories I thought this would be the same, but I'm glad that the author CAN change the tone of her characters and the setting and not be so predictable and repetitive.
It's always a pleasure reading one of Connie Mason's book. I knew I was in for a wild Scottish highland ride when I picked this one up. And what's more - it is my favorite trope - sworn enemies to lovers.
Clan MacKenna and Clan MacKay have been feuding for generations. Countless lives have been lost in various battles. Gillian, daughter of the laird of Clan MacKay is devastated when her father proposed that she wed Ross MacKenna, laird of Clan MacKenna to end the feud and let peace prevail. He is her enemy and her heart already belongs to another man. But she is forced to wed Ross for the continuity and betterment of her clan. What she didn't expect is to fall in love with the stubborn highland warrior. But this is only the beginning of her troubles as the man whom she thought she loved before she was forced to wed Ross is determined to have her come hell or high water even if he has to kill Ross to get her.
Ross agreed to wed Gillian in order to stop the fighting between the two clans. He was prepared to wed and bed her, ensure she give him an heir but not fall in love with her. He had intended to keep his mistress. This was only supposed to be a marriage of convenience until the flame haired temptress wormed her way into his heart. But he must protect her at all costs since the man she was in love with before she wed Ross is determined to have her at all costs.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Ross and Gillian ,both high tempered and strong willed, are a perfect match for each other. Also the pace of this novel is very fast. At every turn there is something happening so you are not allowed to be bored. As usual, connie has woven her magic with words and leave me wanting for more. I must mention Gizela, the healer, she is a very important character in this book. Sometimes she makes me laugh which is refreshing. I look forward to the times when she pops up out of nowhere with her intuition. Definitely recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a story that has passion between its characters, scenic highland beauty, family and most importantly LOVE ❤
Highland Warrior" by Connie Mason is a historical romance novel that features an enemies-to-lovers plot. The story is set in Scotland in the year 1415 and follows the feuding clans of Ross MacKenna and Gillian MacKay. Ross is a strong and honorable hero, while Gillian is a feisty and independent heroine. The supporting characters are also well-developed and add depth to the story.
Enemies-to-lovers trope: The tension between Ross and Gillian is palpable from the beginning, and you will enjoy watching their relationship develop over the course of the story. The burn of their romance is satisfying, and the resolution of their conflict is both believable and heartwarming.
Adventure and action: The battles between the clans are exciting, and the descriptions of the Scottish landscape are vivid and immersive.
Overall, this is a decent read if you are interested in the pretty Highlands, enemies to lovers plot and true love steam.
