3.75 stars!! This was such a sweet story of love and finding hope with the setting of beautiful Venice.
"The world is changing - but we don't have to."
Tropes ⏱︎ Time Travel ⏱︎ Historical Fiction ⏱︎ Sweet romance ⏱︎ found family ⏱︎ Dual Timeline
Setting: My favorite part of this book was absolutely the setting of Venice. I loved all the descriptions of Venice and how charming and peaceful everything seemed to be there for the most part.
Plot: this book started off rather slow slowly with about 150 pages of backstory on both of our main characters. While this certainly helped us get to know the characters very well. I did feel like it dragged at points and made for a very slow paced beginning. Our two main characters didn’t meet until almost 60% through the story which came in a bit of a surprise to me. Once or two main characters did meet I really enjoyed the rest of the story!!
Characters: I really enjoyed Peter and Eileen as characters. For the first half, I enjoyed Peter’s storyline more, his life growing up in Venice in the late 1930s and early 40s was fascinating. Eileen wasn't my favorite at the start but after the time jump, I enjoyed as she traveled through Europe. I loved that both of the characters were writers and were able to bond over that. The romance, while it was very much fairytale love at first sight, was very sweet and since we knew so much about the characters individually, you could tell that they were a wonderful fit for each other. The time travel elements were definitely interesting and although the ending wasn’t what I expected, I actually really appreciated it.
I certainly recommend! This wasn’t a new favorite of mine, but I did enjoy my time reading it.
I received an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
First, the cover for this book is stunning! It is what drew me to it. Second, I really enjoyed the writing. It’s beautiful and elegant. It took me a while to really get into the story with all of the time jumps. I was definitely confused at certain parts and don’t quite understand how everything works. But I’m sure a lot of that will be cleared up in the second book. Eileen was a lovely character. My heart broke for her and her loss. I did feel like that was abrupt and jumped around a bit. Peter was great! I really enjoyed him and his storyteller abilities. I enjoyed reading about the two of them! Their love story was sweet. I do wish they would’ve gotten together sooner. I wanted more of them together. Also, there was a lot of tragedy and sadness in this book. Both characters suffered in their lives. I really enjoyed how it was set in Italy. It was very pretty! I would love to visit Italy one day! I didn’t see the plot twist coming and it left me shocked! I did appreciate the Christian themes although I wished there was more. And what was that ending?! I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. But it left me feeling unsatisfied, I guess. I definitely think I would read Book 2. I didn’t love this book like I had hoped I would. With that being said, I did enjoy it. If you like a clean, Christian slow burn romance with time travel, this book is for you!
Just WOW. Where to begin with this book!? Between the mystical cover and intriguing summary, I knew this read would be worth it from the moment I picked up the book. I was transported back in time, and felt myself walking through the streets of Venice with Peter during the struggles of WW2. Eileen's character was simply authentic and sweet in the best possible way, and Peter's values of kindness, love, and his adventurous yet broken spirit, make for two relatable and charming POVs.
Signor Maggio was my FAVORITE character!! He reminded me so much of other characters that I love, while still being so uniquely him that I can't possibly compare him to anyone. Charismatic, empathetic, fearless. An old soul with wisdom beyond words, experiences beyond measure, but still young in spirit. Signor Maggio, the owner of an old bookshop and Peter's caretaker, is sure to win over every reader!
Peter is SUCH a likeable main character, not only because of his sweet, sacrificial spirit and love for adventure, but his relationships with others (especially Rebekah) truly show the warmth of his heart and devotion to those he loves. I especially enjoyed the way that Daisy had Peter narrate this story with such a strong sense of genuinety and emotion. His raw and real experiences will touch all readers to the heart and give them an adventure like no other.
Every character, great and small, is a testament to Daisy's devotion to her novel and ability to draw readers in. I recommend this to ANYONE looking for an educational, romantic, magical, exciting, or on-the-edge-of-your-seat plot twisting stomach dropping novel. Or just anyone that needs something to read 😉 BELLISSIMO work! 🇮🇹
Where do I even start?! 🤯 I feel like there's so much I can't say because of all the secrets, the suspense!! I was texting a couple friends throughout this book, lots of caps, lots of exclamation points, LOTS of feelings, because this book was making me explode with it all!! 😂
It was a very unique time travel, but still all the feelings with it, the beauty, the perfection. 🩷 When I first started it, I of course had no idea where it was going, especially Peter's side of it, but I was still immediately hooked!
The sweet love story was just...perfect. It was slow, meaningful, and still deep and raw. It went along with the rest of the story just amazingly.
There's not much more that can be said, since I want to keep this spoiler free..so just please go buy yourself a copy of this beautiful historical, time travel book, you will NOT regret it. 🩷
✨ And a warning, this will make you cry, make you hurt, make you want to stop the book, then realize you can't live without it 😢😅 Also, big shout-out to sweet @jessies_world_of_books for listening to my crazy ranting 🤐😂
*I received an e-ARC copy for review, all opinions are my own
I could not put this book down! I was gripped from beginning to end and went through all the emotions. The narrative immersed me in another time and place in this captivating story. The setting is BEAUTIFUL. I really liked getting to know the backgrounds of the two MCs, Peter and Eileen, which made me feel for them. I related to Eileen! Their stories are told individually through the dual POV for a good chunk of the book, then they’re woven together when they finally meet. I loved them both! They are so sweet and stronger than they think. The two timelines are not confusing at all. It was definitely a whirlwind romance, which isn’t normally my cup of tea, but I actually liked it in this story and it worked! The themes and character growth are something to be appreciated, too. I knew it was going to be good when the author started with a Count of Monte Cristo quote (hello, theme of betrayal and wanting revenge). It has some grittiness with the WW2 setting and the reality of the danger the Jews were in, yet it’s done respectfully and in good taste, and it has some delightful moments between family and when Peter and Eileen finally meet. I’m going to be thinking about this book for a long time. I have a book hangover. I will 100% be picking up the next book in this series when it comes out in the future and getting a physical copy of this book when it releases.
At its heart, Everywhere I’ve Never Been is a gentle, character-driven story about a beautiful and innocent love between two very kind and authentic people. On top of that, it involves time travel magic and it’s set in the gorgeous city of Venice, which Daisy illustrates with lovely description! I sometimes hesitate to read books with dual first person POV or the “instalove” trope, but it was so well done in this book, especially because of how compelling the two main characters are and how they don’t actually meet until the second half of the book (this makes the beginning a little slow as you’re waiting on the edge of your seat for Peter and Eileen to meet each other, but I didn’t mind too much because I was so invested in both of their stories!!) I loved the supporting characters just as much, especially Signor Maggio and Rebekah. Also, the plot twist at the end made my jaw literally drop! Overall, Everywhere I’ve Never Been is such a precious book — it made my heart so happy and it’s the kind of story that will stay with you long after you’ve finished reading it. The world needs more books like this one!! ❤️🕰️
When I first started reading this book, I was concerned because I felt like it was taking a long time for Peter and Eileen’s story to dovetail. Now that I’m done with the book, I realize the extensive setup was necessary and well worth the time it took me to read it (and Henkle to write it). This book has a little bit of everything: young characters to appeal to the YA crowd, adult characters to appeal to the grown ups, a little fantasy, a little romance, a little historical fiction. Henkle enjoys writing period pieces, and she does it with great skill. I’m always looking out for an anachronisms (haven’t found one yet), and she writes dialogue and includes details that are appropriate to the time period without feeling awkward. She does a terrific job building suspense in this story and making the reader care about Peter and Eileen. I love impossible love stories — the more tortured, the better! This story has just enough love and heartache to get the reader emotionally wrapped up in their relationship. I appreciate the appropriateness of the ending. It wraps up the storyline in a satisfying way. There is a great maturity in Henkle’s writing. This story is complex and nuanced, and it’s extra impressive when you realize this book was written by a high school girl! This book is perfect for the times you want to curl up somewhere cozy and get lost in a story. I’m looking forward to the next installment!
A beautiful, slightly aching kind of story. Full review to come! (And there'd better be a sequel soon, I have some unanswered questions regarding that time travel lol.)
Since I had the time, I binge read this novel in a few days, and it was good! I've never read historical fantasy, so this was interesting, but I think it's definitely a genre I can like.
The two main characters, Peter and Eileen, I both really enjoyed. I especially related to Eileen, because she had a strong relationship with her older cousin. I also had a strong relationship like that with my cousin, but I've never seen this relationship represented in fiction. And I also related to her because she wants to be a journalist, a writer. And because she doesn't fit in with her peers and wants different things than they do. But she also is tired of being an outsider.
And Peter? Awww Peter <3 I liked him. He cared so much for his family cough. Though perhaps I didn't relate to him as much as Eileen, I really appreciated his old time, gentleman like manners.
As for plot, it was a little different than I expected. I expected some things to happen earlier than they did (based on the blurb), and so was kinda surprised when they didn't. SPOILER:
Nonetheless, I did enjoy it. There's not a lot of action, but it's a sweet, beautiful tale. The romance was good, since Eileen and Peter fit together so well even though they were literally years apart XD But that's what the time travel is for, right?
Speaking of time travel, that was interesting too. I have QUESTIONS about how it works, what it means... So it's a good thing there's going to be a second book ;)
And yes, now I do want to visit Venice, why did you ask? Because the author did such a good job with descriptions in this book! Some descriptions I tend to skim over because they're too long, and I go on with a half baked idea of the setting. But this author seamlessly wove them in so I was given vivid pictures without having to skim long descriptions lol.
As a whole, the writing style was beautiful, and simple. It fit very well with the story itself.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and definitely recommend it to anyone who likes historical fantasy with some romance, and who likes beautiful stories with a slight aching tinge to them, if that make sense. Who like soft and sweet, and at the same time honest kinds of stories.
I received a free copy of this book from the author for review. All thoughts and opinions are my own, and were not influenced by this. Thank you so much Daisy, for allowing me to read and review this book!
A man bent on revenge…a woman trying to put herself together again…and destiny has them meet together in Vienna on magical canal rides that not only feel whimsical, but hide a mysterious ability that could either wreak havoc or do good in the world—across time.
Eileen was such a relatable FMC, especially as a high school senior right now. Facing the unknown future of life after high school and discovering your identity makes a girl reasonably nervous and frustrated, especially if you’ve had a past event that has shaken your confidence in yourself.
Peter, our MMC, is also a relatable character who stole the show. His life in Vienna during WW2 was bittersweet and heartbreaking, giving us the background on his path to revenge. His meeting with Elieen in the 1960s in Vienna allowed him to think back on his painful past, but he wrestles with either letting himself fall and stay with Elieen or completing his revenge plan. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in our feelings, especially when our loved ones get hurt unjustly, but holding onto bitterness will only destroy you, which is illustrated by Peter’s desire to do whatever it takes, even if it goes against his conscience, to follow through on redeeming his family.
The Christian themes of this book are truly touching with the way both characters struggle to see the goodness of God in the midst of suffering and living out the Christian life when unsure of who they really are. Eileen definitely had the best character development of the two—her growth of confidence and conviction was satisfying to witness. Also, the fact that they both like writing? How cool is that?! I love how they encouraged each other’s passions and personalities.
I did not expect the plot twist near the end at all! I was fully shocked!!! Let’s just say Elieen and Peter have some hard choices to make and time and destiny are yet to be determined to be the very things that will either bring them together or push them away for good. Can’t wait for the next book!
Very impressed considering the author’s young age. I did find myself continuing to wonder when and how are Peter and Eileen going to cross paths! But I found each of their stories so enjoyable it didn’t detract from the plot at all. I love the connection later in the book. The love story was sweet, though could be slightly more developed. And the author’s use of “about” when sharing times or distances was also something I could do without - though I think that’s solely a pet peeve of mine having been an English teacher for decades. Overall, this was fantastic and I found myself thinking about the book and my next time to sneak a few chapters into my day, I could’ve easily read it all in once sitting based on how it held my attention. I’m excited for the next installment and the chance to catch up with Peter and Eileen.
Okay where do I even begin!! When I first started reading this book I had no idea what to expect as I had never read anything with time travel, but as soon as I started reading I was unable to put this book down! First off, Daisy does an amazing job of immersing you into the two worlds of Peter and Eileen. The way she is able to give each of them such a strong voice makes you immediately attached to both of their stories! I especially enjoyed reading about Peter's life in Italy. Daisy does an incredible job of setting the scene in Venice and drawing you into his world. The suspense leading up to their paths crossing was so much fun to read and I did not see the plot twist at the end of the story coming at all (genuinely slammed the book y'all). These characters are so well written and I found myself being able to relate to both of them in different ways. The main thing that draws me into a book is how real and authentic the characters feel, and both Peter and Eileen felt so genuine. (psa Peter Chiappetta is like the greenest of green flags. like this man had me so invested and the way he truly cares for those he loves is just *chefs kiss*). I did not see the ending coming AT ALL, and loved the way Daisy brought everything together! This book takes you on an emotional journey as these two characters learn to navigate the obstacles that are thrown their way. I absolutely need more of Peter and Eileen after finishing reading (definitely an ending that will leave you thinking of these characters for a long time), and will be waiting for their story to continue! If you love strong characters who are taken on a magical, authentic, heartfelt, and spectacular journey, then this book is for you! I cannot wait for the story to continue!
I picked up this book expecting an interesting blend of time travel, WWII history, and maybe a twist or two. What I got instead was the kind of story that grabs your attention, pulls you in, and doesn’t let go until the last page.
Having traveled to Italy, Daisy Henkle does a great job of describing the undeniable natural magic ever-present in Venice. The places described in the book and the unique Italian references swept me back to my time in that beautiful city.
Fair warning, the story is intense and powerful. I wasn't expecting to feel so much for the characters. As for the romance, it is emotional without being overdone. You feel everything — the longing, the hope, and the pain. I was surprised at how I could relate to these brilliant characters.
This book doesn’t just tell a story. It moves you. It’s thoughtful and hopeful. Some stories just stay with you; this is one of them.
Daisy Henkle has seamlessly woven romance and time travel into this captivating novel, allowing the reader to experience Venice right alongside the main characters. Everywhere I’ve Never Been has the perfect amount of romance, suspense, and adventure, making it a wonderful read for all ages!
I instantly fell in love with the main characters, Eileen and Peter—especially as their stories intertwined. I found myself relating to their journeys and rooting for them. If you’re looking for a page-turner full of emotion, then this book is definitely for you!
I loved this book! Once I started, I couldn’t put it down. The story is so unique and compelling, with a fascinating blend of time travel, fantasy, historical fiction, and romance. I really appreciate when a book can successfully mix genres like this—it kept me completely engaged.
We get dual POVs from Peter and Eileen, and I loved how their narratives came together so beautifully by the end. The setting in Peter’s chapters, especially in Venice, was incredibly vivid—I felt like I was right there riding in a gondola through the canals! It definitely made me want to visit someday.
The author did an amazing job developing not just the main characters but the supporting characters too. Everything was so well written and intentional. The themes of overcoming tragedy, forgiveness, self-love, and finding beauty in the midst of hardship really stood out and added so much depth!
It’s a clean read (just kisses), making it a great pick for both young adults and adults. I received an eARC of this one, and I’m so glad I did—it’s definitely a new favorite of mine!!
"I kept telling those stories... but the one thing I could never do was tell my own."
Wow! Everywhere I've Never Been was a page turner. I couldn't wait to see where the story was going next. I fell in love with the young characters of Peter and Eileen right away
The dual POV was familiar to me after reading books like Dust and Wonder. I had to pay attention to the dates to know where I was at in the timeline and how old each character was, but it was never cumbersome.
The setting was divine. Venice, Italy 🤤 The characters were so lovely and had so much depth. The romance swept me up. I did not see that ending coming!
This touching time travel romance made me laugh and cry. Daisy Henkle wrote an absolutely beautiful story! I would love to see it adapted as a movie. I can't wait for Book 2!
A time-travel romance filled to the brim with romance, heart, and deep history? Say no more! Daisy Henkle's Everywhere I've Never Been is wonderfully written, with two completely different cultures and time periods, brilliantly described and held together by the strong thread of complex and loveable characters.
The book presents the reader with a wide variety of characters, all with one strong factor, they are written with a deep understanding of the human experience. Every reader is sure to see a reflection of themselves in each character.
Experience the comfort of the sweetest and truest romance, yet a suspense that continues to pull you deeper into it's pages. And, if you're anything like me, by the time you finish this book you'll wish you lived in a gondola too!
This book was insane! I haven’t read a book like this in a long time and it was just what I needed. I was enthralled the entire time with its historical accuracy, adventure, romance, and nostalgia. I deeply connected with Peter and Eileen as they expressed their struggles and longings. The themes of this novel really hit home and were so relatable (especially for young adults). I loved the way both of their stories and lives came together in such a beautiful and fantastic way. This book really brought the comfort and entertainment I was looking for in book. Definitely recommend to anyone who loves a captivating story!
In 𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝑰’𝒗𝒆 𝑵𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝑩𝒆𝒆𝒏, I traveled through Italy in the 1960s with Eileen and experienced pre-WW2 Venice with Peter—in other words, Daisy Henkle did an incredible job writing this book! Not many books can make me feel like I’m actually experiencing it and not just reading words on a page, but this one did!
Some of my favourite things about this book only happened past the 50% mark and are definitely spoilers. Since I really don’t want to spoil anything, this review will be short.
I felt all the emotions while reading this book! It had so many lovely themes; especially one of hope after grief. Both Peter and Eileen went through so much heartache, and really can’t wait to continue reading their story in the next book! (They better have a happy ending @daisyhenkleauthor!) Although I really liked Peter and Eileen, I think my favourite character was Signor Maggio.
The plot really drew me in, and left me excited for the next book. And finally, I really loved the setting! My knowledge of Venice was quite limited, so I learned and researched a little too.
𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝑰’𝒗𝒆 𝑵𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝑩𝒆𝒆𝒏 is a really great summer read and releases this week. I highly recommend you grab a copy for your summer TBR if you love Italy, historical fiction, dual POV, and time travel!
***I’m very grateful for the complimentary eARC I received from the author! I was not required to leave a positive review.
Everywhere I've Never Been is one of the most enjoyable things I've read in a long time! It was so sweet, but it also had such substance to it. As soon as I began the prologue, I was immediately pulled in, and I didn't want to put it down the entire time I read it. It was so intriguing and never stopped! I was rooting for the characters and I was so giddy reading it. It really reminded me of the Lizzie Mcguire movie (yeah, I'm showing my age), which I loved.
The summer vibes were great, and the descriptions were too. I enjoyed having both POVs, and I wondered how POVs were going to correspond and work together. They worked together well! I was steadily wondering what was going to happen to the characters, and I still am wondering what will be next. And the plot twist?? Wow, that was a great direction to take! The ending nearly brought me to tears! I hope we get to see more of Peter and Eileen, but I'm super excited for the next book.
I would say to make sure to pay attention to the dates at the top of the page. If not, it could get confusing. Thank you to the author for allowing me to read it early! I'm super honored!
Content: Language: 1 use of h**l.
Other: boy harasses girl, nothing too detailed or anything.
Everywhere I've Never Been: The Door of Eternity: Book One by Author Daisy Henkle was a wonderful debut.
The story drew me in from the start and was a page-turner of a read. It made me feel like I was there with the Author's excellent world-building and beautiful setting.
It is Dual POV and I really like Eileen as a MC. She is sweet, but strong, and I found her to be written in a relatable way. The themes and character growth are well-done, adding depth to the story. The darkness of the WW2 setting is present, but handled in good taste. The Author did a good job of keeping a thread of hope throughout the story. The story has an unmistakable sweetness to it, and characters that are easy to root for.
Overall, it was a great read and I would recommend it to fans of historical fiction and time travel.
***I received an ARC of the book. All views and opinions expressed are my own.***
Everywhere I’ve Never Been is the first book I’ve read by Daisy Henkle. It was a sweet, adventurous, time-traveling read. I enjoyed that the main character wasn’t the only one time traveling. I felt like I was traveling through time too, as each chapter transported me to a different year and point of view. Although the beginning was a bit slow, the romance and ending felt rushed. Still, I appreciated learning about the characters’ backgrounds. The Christian element included a brief mention of the Bible and some underlying themes. The romance was clean, just kisses. I liked that some scenes left me wondering how or why something happened, only to have the answers revealed in a later chapter. It kept me on my toes. Overall, I enjoyed the history, suspense, and character development. It was a wonderful read!
Everywhere I’ve Never Been is a sweet, gentle time-travel romance that explores deep grief and deep love. The two main characters feel so real. Peter has such a fun, whimsical nature! And at several points in the book I connected with Eileen in her self-doubts and desire to be fully known. She is definitely a kindred spirit.
I appreciate Daisy’s commitment to telling a story that confronts darkness with light. The romance aspect of the story felt a bit rushed—I would have loved to get more Eileen/Peter moments earlier in the book! ☺️ But I would recommend this book to anyone who loves stories with sweet romance, time travel, Venice, gondoliers, and echoes of the classic love story between Romeo and Juliet.
3.75 I thought the writing had a nice flow and illustrated a picture of Venice, Italy. It made me want to go.
It was nice to follow both characters, Peter and Eileen. I’m so used to the main characters meeting quickly, so it was interesting having the MCs meet later in the book. It allowed me to get to know each character separately. And I was not expecting that twist.
I would say what kept me from giving a five star was the pacing. I felt like the book ended where the story starts. But this makes sense since this is book one.
I received an advanced reader’s copy. All opinions are my own.
I loved the setting of this book, and the weaving in the issues with discrimination going on during World War 2. The main character was very sweet. The reason for a 4 star review, was that I felt the ending was a bit rushed. I liked the going back and forth between times, but all of sudden the ending seemed it had to happen suddenly. Nevertheless, if you are looking for a clean, sweet story that bridges two time periods, this was an enjoyable read. I would definitely read this book again.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Timeless story written beautifully that gives inspiration to the soul. Everywhere I've Never Been definitely draws the reader in with its historical fiction setting and magically romantic theme. It's a great read that is hard to put down and will leave you craving for more. Luckily, it's only book one of a highly anticipated series, so keep your eyes open for the next book in the series. So excited!
My favorite book by this author yet!! A sweet romance and time travel book. It was a great read and had a plot twist I did not expect at all. It follows two different charecters and timelines. This book makes for a great summer read! It would be a great choice for readers who love a good romance, fantasy, or historical fiction!
first of all, thank you so much to my sweet university friend and writer friend for allowing me to arc read and support her upcoming novel, it was truly a pleasure!
i have to say, i really really really did love this book. i'd probably say i'd rate it somewhere between 4.5-4.75 stars. the only reason that kept me from giving it a five star rating hands down was a bit of a character issue for me. now, i ADORED eileen and she was my favorite perspective to read, but peter's at times was a bit of a let down, only because his point of view sometimes leaned to more of a "tell rather than show" style, and sometimes, in really important moments that would make me feel connected to the character, the internal thoughts and descriptions were missing. the pacing was pretty well done, but a little more foreshadowing and hinting to the rest of the plot would have made it a PERFECT story 5-star rating for me.
however, overall, i truly enjoyed everything else about this book. it really did give me some nostalgia as i love historical fiction (especially world war 2 themed fiction) as well as reminding me of other classic book, tv shows, and movie favorites.
i also know that with time, the author will grow in her writing skills (which are still SO amazing as they are!) and become an even more amazing writer than she already is, and i can't wait to read more works by her in the future!
