Joann Sfar

Sfar is considered one of the most important artists of the new wave of Franco-Belgian comics. Many of his comics were published by L'Association which was founded in 1990 by Jean-Christophe Menu and six other artists. He also worked together with many of the new movement's main artists, e.g. David B. and Lewis Trondheim. The Donjon series which he created with Trondheim has a cult following in many countries.
Some of his comics are inspired by his Jewish heritage as the son of Jewish parents (an Ashkenazi mother and a Sephardic father). He himself says that there is Ashkenazi humor in his Professeur Bell series (loosely based on Joseph Bell), whereas Le chat du rabbin is clearly inspired by his Sephardic side. Les olives noires is a series about a Jewish child in Israel at the time of Jesus. Like Le chat du rabbin, the series contains a lot of historical and theological information.
His main influences are Fred and André Franquin as well as Marc Chagall, Chaim Soutine, Will Eisner, Hugo Pratt and John Buscema.
From 2009 to 2010, Sfar wrote and directed 'Serge Gainsbourgh: Une Vie Heroique', a biopic of the notorious French songwriter, of whom Sfar is a self-confessed fanatic. The film, which draws substantially on Sfar's abilities as a comic book artist through its extensive use of fantasy artwork, animation and puppetry, was released in 2010 to general critical acclaim.

Joann Sfar has a lot of fun in the Donjon series and this is one of the funnier ones!

Obecně k Donžonu:
Perfektní komiks.
Krásně nakreslený. Někdy se jenom dlouho dívám na obrázky a vychutnávám si kačerův srandovní výraz.
Výborný humor. Velmi často dost černý a nečekaný.
Hezký příběh, napínavý, ale zase ne moc, takže si člověk může vše vychutnat bez hltání.
K tomuhle dílu řeknu jen, že má všechno co mám na Donžonu rád.

- Je to krátký komix: což mě nevadí ani trochu

Isis mag dan wel de charme van ‘Sonia de dikzak’ uit ‘Donjon Zenit 2: De Vechtkoning’ missen, De Prinses van de Barbaren’ is opnieuw een voltreffer van Sfar en Trondheim. De tekenstijl is en blijft een streling voor het oog, het verhaal eentje vol grappen en grollen. Een feelgood boek, zonder meer.

Fantastically funny.
Herbert ist mal wieder fantastisch dumm, und er reitet nicht nur sich sondern den ganzen Donjon nahe ans Verderben... wie wird er da wohl rauskommen?

Izida se stvarno nađe u tamnicam Tvrđe, a njezina obitelj traži nju ili povrat časti u krvi!
Vidimo gdje Herbert upoznaje odabranicu svog srca, Izidu, te kako posvoji svog sina diva Eljacina...

Tentokrát mě dostala parta trollů, které bylo zatěžko jíst malé pavouky, aby si pak bez skrupulí pochutnávala na lidských batoletech. Zkrátka, další super vyprávění o strastech hrdinného kačera Herberta.

Duhovite zajebancije sa fantasy konvencijama. Trolovi, zmajevi, kozaci, čarobnjaci i računovođe. Junaci sa carobnim oružjem i princeze u nevolji ili možda ipak obrnuto?

While still as fun, this is the first Donjon episode that felt a bit too plot heavy and serious for my taste.
