About the author

Jorge Amado was a modernist Brazilian writer. He remains one of the most read and translated Brazilian authors, second only to Paulo Coelho. In his style of fictional novelist, however, there is no parallel in Brazil. His work was further popularized by highly successful film and TV adaptations.
He was a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters from 1961 until his death in 2001. In 1994, his work was recognized with the Camões Prize, the most prestigious award in Portuguese literature.
His literary work presents two distinct phases. In the first, there is a clear social critic and political focus, with works such as Captains of the Sands and Sea of Death standing out.
In his more mature phase, he adopts an aspect of good-humored and sensual chronicler of his people, abandoning ideological motivations, with works such as Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon, The Double Death of Quincas Water-Bray and Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands.

قرأت النسخة العربية باسم"نساء البن" لكن، ورغم صدورها من شهور، إلا إن دار الساقي مرفعتش نسختها العربية على الجودريدز حتى الآن.


بحثًا عن الرزق والمتعة والحياة الكريمة، يرحل جميل بشارة ورضوان مراد، بطلي الرواية، إلى البرازيل، حيث مزارع البن التي كانت، وقتها، أرض الميعاد لكل من لم يجد حيّزه من الحياة.
أحدهما لبناني والآخر سوري، لكنهما في البرازيل أتراك، كل من يأتي من الشرق تركي بصورة ما. يفتح البطلان القارة الجديدة، فتحًا جديدًا بعد فتح الأسبان والبرتغال لها.
يمارس كل منهما وظيفة محددة؛ رضوان ملك المقامرة، حكيم الزمان وفيلسوف العصر. وجميل زير النساء الذي ينسى الهدف من مجيئه إلى البرازيل: أن يعيش حياةً كريمة ثرية.
الشخصية الثالثة هي آدا، فتاة لم تمنحها الحياة جمال والدتها وإخوتها، لم تستطع الحصول على زوج في زمن كان الحصول على زوج هو الهدف الوحيد.
بعد وفاة والدتها تجد آدا نفسها مسؤولة عن إدارة المتجر الصغير والحفاظ عليه. فالأب الذي منحته الأم حريّته كاملةً وتفرّغت هي لأمور المتجر، والأخوات اللاتي لا يملكن المهارة/الرغبة الكافية لأي شيء غير الغزل مع الرجال، كل هؤلاء لا يملكون ما يكفي كي يحافظوا على المتجر، مصدر الرزق الوحيد للعائلة.
تُصاب آدا بالإحباط بعد سن الثلاثين، لم تتزوج بعد، ليست جميلة، وتبدأ طباعها بالتغيّر؛ الفتاة التي كانت يومًا هادئة وراضية تتحوّل إلى شخص عدواني سليط اللسان.

في هذه النوفيللا الصغيرة نتعرف على برازيل التنوّع، حيث يعيش الأغلبية والأقليات المختلفة جنبًا إلى جنب، حيث لا يميّزك لونك عن أى شخص آخر.
يحكي أمادو عن الكادحين كما لم يحكِ أحد قبله.

P G Wodehouse meets William Shakespeare ("The Taming of the Shrew") meets the lush, irreverent tropics in this short novel written to mark the 500anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. This is my first read by Amado, and I was pleasantly surprised to see the social issues wrapped up in a laidback, humorous package - a festive mood that appropriately celebrates joy of life and cultural diversity instead of stirring up old controversies:

I hope readers will have some fun with the events and incidents leading to Adma's nuptials, which took place in the city of Itabuna at the beginning of cacao culture, in the early years of the century, when the Turks finally discovered America, landed in Brazil, and became Brazilians of the best kind.

First of all, the two protagonists are neither of them Turks: one is a Syrian and the other one is a Lebanese, but since the novel is set in 1903 and these two countries were stil part of the Ottoman Empire, it was easier to use one catch all name for these immigrants. In order to make the link to the Columbus festivities (and to throw a couple of barbed arrows at the official historical accounts), the author gave one of the 'Turks' a historical family name:

Raduan Murad, a fugitive from justice for vagrancy and gambling, a scholar with seductive prose, revealed to his steerage companion, the Syrian Jamil Bichara, that during sleepless nights bent over beat-up old books about Columbus's first voyage, in the roll of sailors making up the crew of one of the three caravels on that festive excursion, he's discovered the name of a certain Alonso Bichara. Bichara the Moor, signed on maybe, who knows, by a press gang, one of those many heroes forgotten when it was time for celebrations and rewards: The admiral is covered with glory and the crew is covered with shit.(in spite of all his erudition, Raduan Murad had a foul mouth).

The immigrants land in an idylic and carefree little town in Bahia that benefits from the sky high prices the rest of the world is willing to pay for the cocoa produced in the region. This abundance is a source of a Belle Epoque characterized by surprisingly loose morals: alcohool, gambling and prostitution are apparently the main occupations of the middle class. While the more serious minded Bichara goes out to the cocoa plantations to make a living, the epicurean Murad remains in town to enjoy life:

As for saying, as some did, that he was a sworn enemy of work, holding it in a holy horror, as so frequently happens with educated people, it would be a matter of an obvious injustice and ill will. If, in fact, during his early youth the Professor - that was what many people respectfully called him - stubbornly avoided tasks that were not in line with his intellectual capacity, there was no more assiduous and punctual laborer at the poker table or in any other game of chance.

To bring the 'Turks' back together, Amado brings into the equation a wealthy widower merchant with three daughter: two nubile ones chased by all the young men in town and one harpy who makes her father's life miserable by insisting he gives up drinking and wenching every night. If only somebody would come and take Adma off his hands, he would be ready to part with half of his shop. Murad acts as the go-between, but would Jamil Bichara be ready to endure a lifetime of henpecking for a better chance at wealth?

This story doesn't need an indepth analysis of motivations and social commentary. Read it as it was intended, as a rose-tinted fable of the integration of immigrants into a young and non-conformist nation. I really liked the prose and the humour of Jorge Amado, so I intend to check out more of his work, after I finish with Louis de Bernieres South American trilogy, another fine example of the exuberant and scandalous habits of these hot blooded people.

(رواية تُشكل مزيجاً، من الفُحش والميلودراما والكوميديا الرخيصة).

رست السفينة ألتي حملت جميل بشارة ورضوان مراد الحكيم في خليج القديسين عام 1903م ، أحدهم لبناني والآخر سوري، كانوا يُسمون أتراكاً لأنهم ينتمون إلى أراضي الدولة العثمانيّة آن ذاك.

(ثقافة الإغتراب) كانت طاغية على هذه الرواية، تحكي عن الإندماج المجتمعي ، وكيف تبدء لغة الحديث بالعربية وتنتهي بالبرتغالية أو العكس.

رواية فقيرة برازلياً، غنية عربياً، لا شخصيات برازلية بارزة في الرواية، حكت عن شجع العربي، وفحشه، وتولعه بالخمر والنساء، والبحث عن الثروة.

الجميل في هذه الرواية قدرة الكاتب على تحويل حدث بسيط الى حكاية تُحكى بسردية جميلة ومركزة.

ثمة صداقة نشأت بين " جميل بشارة" الشاب و " رضوان مراد" الحكيم على متن السفينة التي تقلهما إلى البرازيل عام ١٩٠٣ ، وقد توطدت تلك الصداقة على أراضي " باهيا" الجنوبية التي تُشكل فردوس الكاكاو الجديد..
لقد كان يُطلق على هؤلاء العرب أتراك ولكنهم كانوا برازيليين...
مزيج غريب يجمع ما بين الحكمة ، الخداع ، الالتفاف والمواربة، الغواية والإفتتان...العيش من أجل العيش ليس هنالك شيء آخر.....
عن أحلام هؤلاء الذين يسلكون أشد الطرق إنحطاطاُ لتجميع الثروة التي يرونها تعزز وجودهم وتحقق كيانهم....
هذه النوفيلا القصيرة بالرغم من إنها لم ترق لي ولكن ثمة سحرٌ خاص لا يقاوم في سردها ...

Não posso dizer que tenha apreciado muito esta pequena história.

Nas primeiras páginas o autor explica-nos como este texto veio a ser escrito. Foi-lhe encomendado com vista a ser publicado por altura das comemorações do Quinto Centenário da Descoberta da América, conjuntamente com outras duas histórias de autores do continente americano (Normal Mailer e Carlos Fuentes). A publicação conjunta acabou por não se concretizar, mas tendo este texto "nascido", Jorge Amado fê-lo publicar e chegar aos seus leitores.

O início da história (que foi para mim um pouco confusa e difícil de acompanhar pela rapidez da narrativa, vocabulário utilizado e quantidade de personagens) contextualiza e conta sobre a chegada de dois imigrantes do médio oriente ao Brasil no início do século XX e de como iniciaram aí a sua vida. Após este início, o foco passa a ser sobre o "desespero" de um comerciante para casar a sua filha mais velha, a única desprovida de encantos, história esta onde os personagens apresentados no início (o sírio Jamil Bichara e o libanês Raduan Murad) entre outros, estarão envolvidos.

Para além da caracterização de uma região e do seu povo nesta época, bem como do processo de integração dos nossos protagonistas no tecido social existente, temos presentes o tema do casamento, da desigualdade entre géneros, da sexualidade e do papel e estatuto da mulher.

A mulher desta realidade é objecto, é bem de compra, troca e negociação, é uma necessidade para os prazeres sexuais do homem, é vítima de abusos vários, é vista como inferior e se não submissa, "...se amansa no mimo e na porrada" devendo-se entender o "mimo" destes homens por "dar-lhes rola" ou seja "montá-las"... E tudo nos é contado assim mesmo, sem filtros, de forma muito directa e crua que por vezes roça mesmo o grosseiro e boçal.

É como se diz... "it is was it is", as coisas são como são (ou como eram, pelo menos assim o espero) e o autor apenas reflecte neste texto (e bem) as realidades existentes à data, contudo, não posso dizer que tenha adorado ler esta história, que considere este enredo ou personagens particularmente interessantes, que me tenha sido possível apreciar o estilo do autor ou que este livro me tenha acrescentado. Ainda assim, gostei de o ter lido.

This little bagatelle by Jorge Amado was to have been part of a series of original stories published for the 500th anniversary of the Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. Well, nothing turned out as planned. The Quincentenary itself turned out to be something of a bust, as Columbus is seen (except by the Italians) as something of a despoiler, and, besides, didn't a Viking named Leif Erickson beat him to it by another 500 years? And to top it all off, the publisher cancelled the series, but Amado went gamely on with his part anyhow.

A fact not known to many is that Latin America experienced the inflow of thousands of Syrians and Lebanese in the period before the First World War. Because they came with Ottoman passports, they were all referred to as Turks. When I go to Arequipa, Peru in September, I will visit several "Turkish" restaurants, as I did in Yucatan several times during the 1980s.

The Discovery of America by the Turks tells of two friends named Raduan Murad and Jamil Bichara who befriend one of their countrymen,Ibrahim Jafet, whose beautiful wife Salua left him a widower, but not before several daughters were born. The one they had picked to minherit their bazaar in Ituaguassu was, however, their spinsterish daughter Adma. This is a tale about how the shrewish Adma met her match in a young Arab waiter named Adib. Kinds of sounds like Taming of the Shrew, doesn't it?

In any case, it's a short fun read.

تذكر زيليا غاتاي أمادو ان الرواية التي بين ايدينا وجدتها حين كانت مخطوط في سلة القمامات اعجبها الفصل الذي كان سيكون فصل الزواج من رواية المواجهة، حين أخبرت جورجي عنها قال فصل طويل والاحسن له سلة القمامة، بعد زمن طالبها بالفصل عدله وأرسله ليصبح في شكل نوفيلا التي بين ايدينا، هل تستحق القراءة ؟ أعتقد ان قراءة اعمال اخرى للكاتب ثم العودة لنساء البن أفضل...

مرت بسلاسة كالحلم الذي راود جميل بشارة بالثروة والحب.

قد تجعلك هذه الرواية تفكر ما الذي يجلب السعادة هل هو الحب أو المال أم ماذا؟
وتتساءل من جديد هل الجمال هو كل شيء؟

El desparpajo de Jorge Amado es legendario; ante una muy seria petición de escribir un libro conmemorativo del descubrimiento de América, bajo un contrato pagado, decide escribir "De cómo los turcos descubrieron América", muy lejano de las travesías de Cristóbal Colón y el choque de dos mundos, de dos culturas y todo lo que ya conocemos.

Un libro entretenido, muy a lo Amado, con enredos amorosos y picardías a granel. Si le quité las 5 estrellas (de mis lecturas anteriores) es por su componente machista, ciertamente asociado a un momento histórico y cultural en Brasil, probablemente más entre los inmigrantes "turcos", donde la mujer solo sirve como esposa o puta y siempre con esa sensación que Amado se burla de esa cultura, que lo dice un tanto tongue in cheek:

"Adma había alcanzado la edad del mal humor y la maldad"
"Si tiene plata, ninguna mujer es fea"
"Adma era una apuesta dura, indigesta. Enfrentarla exigía decisión, coraje y estómago de camello"

Aunque al final no puedo sacudirme la sensación que la heroina, la gran ganadora, es precisamente la mujer, que subyuga al hombre y lo "domestica" en este caso.

Tercera vez que leo este libro y siempre lo disfruto igual que la primera vez:

"Un milagro menos, un milagro más: los milagros sucedían cada dos por tres en aquellos buenos tiempos del descubrimiento de América por los turcos"

قصة كان من المفروض ان تنشرها إيطاليا لتعطى مجانا لركاب الخطوط واعطت الكاتب مبلغا من المال. ولكنها لم تنشر. قفاك الكاتب نفسه ينشرها وكتب فيها هوزيه ساراماغو نبذة ايضا.

ولكن حسب نظرتي المتواضعة ان هذه الرواية تريد ان تعطي نبذة سيئة عن العرب المهاجرين إلى أمريكا الجنوبية. طبعا لا اقول ان العرب لا يستحقون هذا النقد والهزل! بل ربما نستحق ولكن لماذا لا ارى نفس النقد للمستكشفين الاجانب؟ الذين دخلوا واستحلوا واستفحلوا وقتلوا وسفكوا الدماء؟
اتعرفون لماذا؟ لان العربي يستحل دمه في اي مكان. ولذا قرر الكتاب انه من المبدع ان نستخف به.

(قد أتراجع قليلا عما قلته لان رئيس البرازيل ميشال تامر لوقت طويل نسبيا(من ٢٠١١-٢٠١٦) كان عربيا)

Tem muita coisa problemática aqui e me sinto até um pouco culpada de ter gostado tanto dessa leitura, que achei muito divertida. Temos que ter em mente antes de iniciar livros do Jorge Amado que sempre a mulher é retratada dessa forma, objetos sexuais sempre culpadas pelas desgraças na vida dos homens. Ele sempre exalta em suas obras os bêbados, as prostitutas, os malandros, os boêmios, os jogadores.

ممتعة و الحس الفكاهي فيها محبب، مقتطفات عن تاريخ اكتشاف امريكا الجنوبية و مزارع الكاكاو في البرازيل. تنقل طبيعة المجتمع الذي تكوّن هناك بصورة فكاهية خفيفة لا تخلو من المعاناة.

كانت تقول زيليا جاتاى لزوجها جورجي اماد عن احد ملحق الرواية حينما رأتها في سلة المهملات "هل سترمي هذه الأوراق ؟! فقال لها "ان أفضل مكان لها هو سلة المهملات".. وانا اقول له ليتك تمسكت برأيك وليت زوجتك لم تخرجها !

بغض النظر عن كل شيء فقد وجدت للإسف حكاء ولم أجد رواية !

تجسيد لشخصيات عربية الأصول تم إحياءهم في الرواية لأجل التقزيم منهم ليس إلا.. عبارات فجة وخليعه مكررة ومبتذلة لم تضف على الرواية اي شيء … لحظة عزيزي القارىء فالرواية من الاساس لم يعطي اي شيء

سرد طويل ممل مبتذل وعبارات تافهة فقط

اشكر الله انها لم تتجاوز المئة صفحة إلا بقليل ورغم ذلك كانت ثقيلة بالنسبة لي ولولا انها ضمن القراءة الاسبوعية للقراء البحرينيين لما أكملتها رغم أني سبق وقرات للمؤلف رواية اخرى كانت أقل تفاهة من هذه وهي ميتتان لرجل واحد

النجمة الوحيدة للسرد والاسترسال من لا شيء

رواية اغلب ما تحتويه الشهوة والجنس وكأنما التسلية في الحياة فقط للغواية والمجون والشرب وكانما هؤلاء الذاهبين الى تلك للمناطق للعمل كان بحثهم عن اللهو اكثر من بحثهم عن المال والعمل.
وشيئا اخر زاد اشمئزازي هو اختيار الأسماء العربية البحته واستخدام الالفاظ التي تنم عن الأستهزاء بالدين وبالخالق وبالعلماء اي ازدراء هذا الموجود في هذه الرواية ازدراء قبيح جدا.
الأسماء لها دلالاتها دائما وذكر الدين والمذهب وبجنبه ذكر افعال الاشخاص القبيحه له دلاله غير جيده (رضوان مراد، جميل بشارة ، ابراهيم جعفر ، سميرة ،آمادا) وغيرها .
لا تفضل قرائتها من قبل الصغار.

Bottom Line first: Jorge Amado’s The Discovery of America by the Turks reads as an earthier and briefer variation of Cannery Row by Steinbeck, John (1993) Mass Market Paperback

Amado writes well of people living at the edges of society, pious in their own way and much given to the pleasures of the flesh. The result is not explicit or obscene but it is not a good choice for the pre-teen set and may be offensive to any number of people on religious grounds, references to drinking and the regular access to ladies of pleasures. The point of view is vary male, but the women have their own appetites and areas of authority. The tone is comedic but not laugh out loud funny. Recommendation: I enjoyed The Discovery of America by Turks. I am not sure that it has traveled well in time, but the writing is engaging.

According to the Introduction, Amado had be approached to write a story just long enough to entertain a person flying from Europe to the America’s as part of the 500 year Anniversary of the European Discovery of America. The original scheme was never executed, but Amado took up and abandoned sub-plot from a larger novel and so became The Discover of America by the Turks.

The Turks in question are the young Jamil Bichara and the older Raduan Murad. They arrive in Brazil in 1903 having stated from widely different parts of what was the still known as the Turkish Empire. Hence they are known to us as Turks. The younger man is a dedicated working man with goals of becoming an independent business owner. The older is a gambling man, famous for among other things inventing a respected and successful method of cheating.
That they are both single and much given to the flesh pot of their remote villages are important plot points. This being a very short book less than 100 pages any more details edges into plot spoilers.

Theirs is a world were visits to the local brothel and social equality between these ladies and even men of some social standing is the norm. The most basic societal rule about sex is that wives are for the making of children and the brothels are for men to express their lusts.
Again without being too specific the entire attitude towards women is not likely to endear this book to many 2017 readers.

Accept that this is a comedic view into a world remote in time 1910 or thereabouts) and space, remoter parts of Brazil. Accept that these people are here for light amusement and not moral example and except that well a few more thing and you can expect to read a naughty well written novella. If it helps any, Amado has a much repeated view of how women are tamed. Unspoken is the ironic fact that similar approaches can be used to control the men of The Discovery of America by the Turks.

أنهيتها في جلسة واحدة تقريبا ولا أعلم لماذا كانت ثقيلة على قلبي إلى هذا الحد على الرغم من صغرها.
فهي -من وجهة نظري- رواية باهتة لا حياة فيها، رواية من النوع المبهم الذي تقرأه ولا يساعدك ذهنك في رسم مكان أحداثها ولا تصور شخصياتها.
أسماء أكثر من اللازم، شخصيات أكثر من اللازم يحدثني عنها الكاتب كأني أعرفهم مسبقًا،
وصف أقل من اللازم أو المطلوب كي تستقر في ذهنك معالم المكان والمكان والشخصيات.
حتى الترجمة لم تكن سلسة في معظم الفصول.

ربما أنا فقط لم أتذوقها كما يجب، ولكني لم أحبها مع الأسف.

أكملت إنهاء الكتاب متمنية ولو سطرًا واحدًا يستحق القراءة بعد كل فصل أكمله، لا شيء غير الأوصاف البذيئة الخالية من المعنى وكثير من الأحاديث التافهة.
نادمة كثيرًا لإكمالي إياه.

كتابة الرواية وراها قصة خاصة، انطلب من الكاتب يكتب رواية قصيرة راح تتكفل الحكومة بترجمتها لأربع لغات ويتم توزيعها على المسافرين اللي بستخدموا الطيران البرازيلي مشان يتعرفوا على ثقافة البلاد... لكن قبل ما يتم المشروع بتم فسخ العقد وبنشرها الكاتب عن طريق دور نشر مختلفة بعدة لغات... الغريب هو موضوع القصة اللي كان المفترض بتعبر عن ثقافة البلد يعني لازم يكون فيها تميز وخصوصية وتراث، بس القصة بتحكي عن مهاجرين عرب اثنين واحد سوري وواحد لبناني بستقروا بالبرازيل مشان يستغلوا ثورة زراعة الكاكاو اللي كانت سبب بثراء عدد لا بأس فيه من الناس ومنهم العرب.. وهذا بدل على إنه المهاجرين العرب ساهموا بتشكيل الثقافة البرازيلية وإدخال بعض الطباع العربية عليها وللأسف من سياق القصة واضح إنه الصورة اللي نقلوها عن العرب مش حلوة ويمكن ما بتمثل العرب أو على الأقل ما بتمثل غير شطارتهم في التجارة، وإحنا عبر التاريخ مر علينا تجارب كثيرة لنقل الثقافة والأخلاق عبر التجار والمهاجرين... هاي الحالة مش وحدة منهم...

القراءه الأولي إبريل 2021

جورجي أمادو الساحر البرازيلي، ملك الحكائين اللاتينين الذي يجعل من أبسط الأحداث حكايات رائعه، يتناول في حكاياته أسرار وطبائع شخصيات قد تبدو بسيطه ولا تحمل بين طياتها الكثير مما يغري القصاصين بتناولها، ولكن أصابع أمادو الساحره قادره علي فعل المعجزات. كتب أمادو نساء البن أواخر عام ١٩٩١ في ذكري مرور خمسة قرون علي اكتشاف العالم الجديد وقد كانت جزء من مشروع لم يكتمل من مؤسسه إيطاليه لإحياء تلك الذكري. وقد كان أن اختار أمادو أبطال قصته ليكونا قادمين مبحرين من الشرق وهم يغزون الأراضي اللاتينيه بشكل آخر مختلف عن سابقة الفتح الأولي.

نساء البن نوفيلا تحكي عن مهاجران عربيان أحدهما سوري والآخر لبناني تجمعهما سفينه متجهه من الشرق للغرب، من البحر المتوسط الي البرازيل بحثآ عن فرص جديده للحياه وتحط بهما علي الأراضي البرازيليه عام ١٩٠٣ ليكتشفا العالم الجديد كل منهم علي طريقته الخاصه. رضوان مراد اللبناني مللك حياة الليل والقمار الذي يختار باهيا لحياته ومغامراته، وهي بالمناسبه موطن أمادو، وجميل بشاره السوري الباحث عن أحلامه وطموحاته بعيدآ عن صخب المدينه وسط مزارع البن وأحلام التجاره والربح . تجمعهم جلسات البارات وقصص العاهرات ونساء الليل والخطط الشيطانيه عن الحب والزواج والتجاره والمال وأشياء أخري.

تتقاطع الأحداث مع آدا والتي تمثل مع شقيقاتها تناقضآ أزليآ للطبيعه البشريه فهي عانس عذراء جامده متسلطه لا تنعم بالحد الأدني من الجمال ، وهن جميلات، مرحات ومتزوجات. محور الأحداث ما تصنعه تلك الفتاه من تغيير في أقدار من حولها الي أن ترسل لها الأقدار من يغير حالها في اشاره الي الاراده الالهيه وما تفعله بالبشر . تركيبه مميزه من الأحداث السريعه المتلاحقه التي تجعل القاريء متلهف لانهاء الأحداث واكتشاف ما تخبئه الأقدار.

نساء البن نوفيلا صغيره من تحف جورجي أمادو علي الرغم من قلة حجم صفحاتها الا إنها تستحق الاقتناء.

جورجي امادو... ولا يعدّ من بين الكتاب الذي جيَّرتهُم الأيدولوجيا الى نهاية المطاف. حيث كتب بتمرّد الاديب الشامل، الذي غالبا ما ينتقد الممارسات التي لا تصبّ في مصالح الشعوب، على الرغم من بعض الاعمال التي كتبها في شبابه اتسمت بتلك الصبغة، ولكن اعماله التالية جعلته الكاتب الأهم من بين الكتاب في العالم، الكاتب الذي سمتهُ بساطة الأسلوب، والذي يختار ابطال رواياته من المعدمين والبائسين الذين يمرون بضيق دائم.

نوفيلا بسردية سلسة و سهلة، تشعر انك تجلس بالقرب من الراوي و تسمع تفاصيل قصة من تلك القصص اليومية التي لا طائل منها و لا هدف سوى الثرثرة و نقل الاحداث و التغزل الفاحش في اجساد النساء ..لم استلطف الطابع العام للقصة و التركيز على نقطتين : الاولى ان ابطالها من العرب فهي تفتقر الى اي شخصية برازيلية او ثقافة من تلك الارض، و الثانية هي اظهار العرب المهاجرين و الذي كان هدفهم من الهجرة من بلادهم هي البحث عن الثروة و النساء بهذا المنظر المخزي و الانغماس حتى النخاع في شهواتهم و ملذاتهم الحسية .. و بغض النظر عن حقيقة ذلك فلا احد يستطيع ان ينكر وجود هذا النوع من الرجال و النساء سواءاً من العرب او من اي اثنية اخرى و لكن التركيز عليهم و على افعالهم المبتذلة و العهر الاخلاقي في قصة ما لا يرقى بفكر و لا يسمو بنفس و لا يثري المعرفة !!

اما النقطة الثالثة التي تكررت اكثر من مرة و هي حديثه و كوميديته الساخرة لعلاقة هؤلاء المهاجرين العرب و المسلمين تحديداً مع الله و نبيه محمد .. شيء من الاستهزاء و الاستنقاص لم استطع تمريره !!

كوني عشت في البرازيل ٨ سنوات، أفهم لماذا يرى البرازيليون العرب بهذه الطريقة…
فمن لقب التركي الى الكادح في العمل وزير النساء فأنا لا استطيع الا ان اقول انه نوعاً ما كان على حق…
ومن شخصية زوجة ابرهيم القديرة التي عملت مع زوجها يداً بيد رأيت الكثيرات…
ومن هم تزويج البنات والبحث عن عربي لهذه المهمة شهدت عدة حالات مماثلة…

ولكن حبذا لم تطرق الى تواجد معظم الجاليات اللبنانية والسورية ضمن تجمعات داخل المجتمع البرازيلي وكيف بنوا جوامعهم، وكنائسهم وحسينياتهم الخاصة، وعاشوا كأنهم في بلدهم الام…
بل في معظم الحالات تشحن الزوجة من البلد الأم ويتم الزواج بعد ان لا يكون يعرف الزوجان من بعضهما الا صورة ارسلت قبل ان يتم الزواج…

وأخيرًا لم استطع الا ان اهز رأسي عندما وجدته قد اطلق اسم ابرهيم جعفر على اللبناني المسيحي وجميل بشارة على السوري المسلم…

تمنيت لو ان في القصة المزيد، ولو انها لم تكن مليئة بكل هذه الخلاعة، ولو ان لها عنوان آخر بالعربية…

Saramago introduces Amado as the voice and spirit of Brazil-- yet another major world author all but unknown in the US. Given that, I was delighted to find this little novella in an airport bookstore at LaGuardia-- what with delays, it just about covered the flight to Dulles. The story takes place within a community of recent Arab immigrants (mislabeled as Turks by Brazilians) creating new economic and social lives around Brasilia around the turn of the 20th century. From a sociological perspective, this is hardly a thick description-- one doesn't learn all that much about the cultural mores of these folk. The provocative title seems to promise a complex reflection on globalization and colonial histories. There's some of that-- it was originally composed as a contrarian entry for a grand literary tribute to the quincentennial of Columbus. However, the work is mostly a sweetly vulgar adaptation of Taming of the Shrew. Stylistically, however, Amado has more a touch of Rabelais than the Bard, and it is the bawdy fruition of unlikely romance that makes this a satisfying read. Hard to think of a writer in English who can be crass and tender this well.

Also notable is an afterward in which Amado's wife explains how she rescued the entire manuscript from the trashbin many years earlier. Amado had written it as one chapter of a longer novel and rejected it for being way too long. Thank god for attentive literary spouses!

اتذكر اني كنت في زياره لاحدى المكتبات القديمه وسط مدينه لشبونه البرتغالية، وكانت صاحبة المكتبة من الجنسيه البرازيليه ، فذكرت لها اننا نحب كتابات باويلو كويلو في الشرق ، وهو من اكثر الكتاب البرازيليين شعبية تقريبا لدى العرب .. فضحكت من كلامي ضحكة تنم عن السخريه ، وقالت ان باويلو كويلهو من كتاب الدرجه الثانيه لدينا في البرازيل .. اذا اردت ان تقرأ لكتاب برازيليين حقيقين ، فعليك بجورجي أمادو .. ومن وقتها دونت هذا الاسم لعلي اجد لديه مايناسبني … هذه الحادثه مر عليها سنوات ، ولكن لم اجد مؤلفا قصيرا لابدأ به اكتشافي ، حتى وقعت يدي على هذه النوفيلا
ومااعحبني بها ان ابطال القصه هم من العرب المهاجرين للبرازيل (رضوان مراد اللبناني و جميل بشارة السوري ) وقد تعمد أمادو نسبهم للأتراك كون هذه المنطقه كانت تحت حكم العثمانيين وقت احداث هذه الروايه … لاشك ان جورجي امادو مطلع واسع الثقافه سواء لما يخص بلده البرازيل بتنوعها الثقافي والعرقي ، او حتى بما يخص تاريخ الأمم الأخرى ، لكن الروايه سرديه بحته فالحوارات قليله جديدا مما أشعرني بشيء من الملل ، لن تكون التجربه الاخيره ولكني انتظرت ان اقرأ شيئا أجمل .

Muito bem escrito, dou o braço a torcer, o homem tinha proficiência no idioma, e uma habilidade de embrulhar em inocência e leveza as brejeirices que narrava.

Fico me perguntando, porém, se esse tipo de livro vai resistir ao teste do tempo e seria capaz de apostar que os pósteros não vão se interessar muito por histórias de cabarés, bocetas, cus, chupetas, bebadices, conversa besta e suruba familiar.

Meu finado avô (que Alá o tenha em sua glória) e o que ainda vive me contaram histórias melhores de lupanares e poderiam ter se tornado Jorge Amados com um pouco mais de talento e o networking do Partido Comunista do Brasil.

Es la obra más machista que he leído en mucho tiempo y aunque sí acepto que es un reflejo de una cultura patriarcal, no deja de ser chocante porque otras protagonistas del mundo de Jorge Amado son mujeres fuertes, de armas tomar, aún cuando están enmarcadas en roles de género nada favorables.

Me atrajo el título porque creí que encontraría más elementos que explicarían el mestizaje pero lo que encontré fue la normalización de violencia de género y estereotipos de lo más detestables.

No lo valoro aún más bajo por el estilo inconfundible de Jorge Amado: jocoso, sensual y espontáneo.
