The Portuguese language was developed gradually from the Vulgar language (i.e. Vulgar Latin) spoken in the countries which formed part of the Roman Empire and, both in morphology and syntax, it represents an organic transformation of Latin without the direct intervention of any foreign tongue. [close] This group, dedicated to Portuguese-American and Portuguese-Canadian Literature, focuses on the increasingly present literary conversation between the Portuguese Diaspora, American, and Canadian culture at large. Except for a few regions of these two countries where their presence is remarkable, the Portuguese presence in the United States and Canada has slipped from the public consciousness, and the few representations of Portuguese-Americans and Portuguese-Canadians in popular culture have obscured their image. In this group, we discuss how Portuguese-American and Portuguese-Canadian fiction, poetry, memoir, oral history, theater and performance interrogate the stereotyped portrayals of Portuguese-Americans and Portuguese-Canadians and foster genuine historical inquiry and understanding. Here, we explore the potential of literature to enable the recovery of a forgotten, even repressed, historical past. Our aim is to foster a deeper and more complex appreciation for the importance of Portuguese-American and Portuguese-Canadian texts in the study of Portuguese culture, American culture, Canadian culture and the space of the Portuguese diaspora.
