Holy cow!!! We finally get a few Kanda chapters! Kanda might be a jerk, but you can still count on him to do what's right. I'm totally a Kanda fangirl, so I just loved this installment. Lenalee is kinda boring, I mean more than usual, because . And what is up with her name? Lenalee Lee?! Did her parents not think that through?????

Covers Chapters 87-97

Kanda is back and I’m going feral over it 😍😍😮‍💨 The Millennium Earl succeeded in recreating Noah’s ark, trapping members of the Black Cross within. Another action packed volume, mostly showing Kanda!! 💕

In an alternate late 19th Century, European and Asian civilization is under attack by beings called “akuma.” These monsters (made by tricking/bargaining humans into wearing mechanical bodies that then wear the skin of the original human) are under the loose control of the Millennium Earl. He and his “Noah Family” bear a grudge against humanity and God for deeds in the distant past.

Standing against the Earl is the Black Order of exorcists, who work for the Catholic church (but very independently.) They wield weapons called “Innocence”, parts of an initial whole now split into 109 fragments. Innocence comes in “Parasite” (becomes part of the user’s body) and “Equipment” (can be worn or carried) types and grants different powers to the wielder it chooses.

Our protagonist is Allen Walker whose left arm has been replaced by an Innocence that has superhuman strength and powerful claws. Due to a childhood encounter with the Earl, Allen also has a scarred left eye that can detect akuma even in human disguise. He’s a recent recruit to the Black Order, just in time for the Earl and his Noah Family to step up their activities.

Volume Ten opens with the arrival of one of the exorcist generals, but more importantly, the sword-swinging exorcist Kanda, who was guiding him. He and his companions swing the battle more in favor of the exorcists, only to have the Earl lose his temper and destroy Edo.

The main characters survive this, at least partially due to Lenalee suddenly manifesting a giant crystal shield, something she’s never done before. Before the Earl can press his attack, Allen arrives and the Earl calls a retreat to think about the new possibilities.

Our heroes’ happy reunion is cut short when several of the exorcists are pulled into another dimension, back inside the Ark. It seems the Earl has been creating a new Ark that will respond only to his or his faithful followers’ control (the previous one having been compromised by a traitor.) He and the Noah known as Road are now transferring the functions of the old Ark to the new one, a process that will take about three hours. As the functions are transferred, the cityscape inside the Ark will crumble, until everything inside is destroyed, including the exorcists.

There should be no escape, but several of the Noah have decided they want final rematches. If the exorcists can get past all of them, there’s one exit still open. Of course, the Noah have no intention of making these fair fights!

Most of the volume is taken up with Kanda battling Skin Boric, a Noah with electrical powers. A flashback reveals that the Noah periodically reincarnate into/possess normal humans when their previous bodies are killed, giving them the appearance of immortality. How much this changes their personality seems to vary–Skin murdered everyone he knew in his pre-Awakening life, while Tyki is still friends with his old buddies when not required to do evil deeds for the Earl.

This shounen (boys’) series started in 2004, and spawned an animated adaptation as well as some tie-in light novels. It’s still running, but due to the author’s health issues it went from weekly to monthly and now quarterly chapters. You can see a bit of change in the art for these volumes as it became more painful to draw.

To be honest, jumping in on these volumes would be a mistake–we’re in the middle of a plotline and the author doesn’t make allowances for a reader who doesn’t already know who most of the characters are. (Why does that guy look like a vampire? You’ll just have to read the volume he was introduced in.)

Most of the characterization is only at the surface level as people react to battle situations. Only Skin Boric gets more depth this time.

The art is nifty, even if some of the battle sequences are confusing. There’s a bit of male gaze as Road and Lenalee both get symbolic sequences in skimpy nighties.

The “gothic” feel of the series is good, but the big battle sequences here tend to fight against that. Recommended for those that like their shounen battle manga on the depressing side.

4/5 Another great volume in #10. This time we’re introduced to the inside of The Ark. However, the main draw of this volume is the focus on Kanda, whose been missing for the last 5 or so volumes, and his huge battle with Skin Boric, one of the Children of Noah. A few answers sprinkled here and there but most things still remain a mystery.

Nice cover featuring Miranda, Kanda, and Skin Boric.

The gang's all back together! I liked how Allen swooped in and saved the day in Japan, but got bored once they'd all been trapped in the arc and we began the long string of interminable one-on-one fights. That said, the bit where Kanda insults everyone to make them leave is easily one of my favorites in the entire series so far. Ha!

I just love Allen and Kanda together. They are hilarious in their mutual dislike for one another. If I had to pick a favourite character, I don't think I could choose between Allen, Kanda or Lavi/Rabi. I liken Kanda to being like a cat. He's always shitty and is particular in the way he does things. He also doesn't like help from his friends and sees them as more of a nuisance than anything.

I loved the dialogue between Kanda and Allen in this one. Their constant bickering and the fact that their friends were all like "can you stop arguing please" just about everytime they conversed. Lol, when Allen returned, all of Allens friends were like "Yay, he's returned" and Kanda's reaction is like "Oh I'm going to shave off all your hair and sell it". Funniest scene ever!!

I really loved this book because, just like in the series, Allen's return was epic. And, I can't say it enough, I love Allen and Kanda together. And, Kanda was hilarious in the way he wanted to fight the bad guy himself so he set his Demon spirits on his friends so they would go away, just so he could fight the bad guy himself. They were all like "Geez, he's scary" and "fine fight the bad guy yourself, we no longer care about you". The fact that he attacked his friends just so he could fight the bad guy, it was funny in the series and it was funny in the book.

I think the only real differences in this book compared to the series is that in the series you got to see more of Tidal, Kanda and Marie's journey to Edo, rather than in the book where they just turned up. I can remember there was a little bit of story about their journey but it wasn't as much as it was in the series.

Poor Kanda, but I know he will be saved. Looking forward to seeing how it is written in the Manga.

How spectacular the Millenium Earl and Allen’s confrontation was, especially after a rather contrived peril of Lenalee, her Innocence, brought by the attention it draws. This is followed up by another trap, dragging Lenalee and many of the Exorcists trying to save her in the strange Ark doomed for destruction, a gambit which was both annoying and interesting. Thus begins a long journey in which the Noahs come to stop the trapped Exorcists from finding their way out, engaging one of them in mortal combat. Some of the Noahs, however, are allies even as they remain relentless enemies.

I am not a fan of Lenalee’s extended period of damselling, unable to fight, to do anything but scream, cry, or beg everyone to be careful. Nor am I a fan of Lenalee being the girl hostage that everyone else has to protect, unable to return the favor. I did love Allen’s return, how he faced the Earl, and how complex his relationship with Tyki Mikk is getting. I also enjoy how much Road Camelot and the other Noahs are developing. Kanda’s battle was beautiful if a bit predictable, not to mention its outcome depressed me. Overall this volume kept up with past books, disappointing me in some ways, but surpassing itself in others.

This book was a good time overall but had some convoluted moments kanda fighting the big dude from Noah was cool and definitely meant to be a big fight. However the fight felt random and thrown in there so the book wouldn’t feel bland. The transformation of the noah member was a cool design and seeing his back story of how the earl recruited him was also cool. Also Kanda apparently died which is crazy since he was a main character who had some OP moments. He literally killed an akuma with one slash that Lavi was struggling to defeat. However we will see if he’s actually dead since Allen apparently died before but his innocence saved him. Overall a decent time but not perfect. Also forgot to mention that the author says she likes the cover she did on the last book and from now on she’ll make the covers similar which is really cool seeing how the volume 9 cover is my favorite.

A lot happens in this volume, Tiedoll's unit goes to help the Cross unit, and Allen gets back.

I love that we got Allen, Lenalee, Lavi and Kanda all together because I love their interactions their characters just have so much chemistry. I just love how they work together, make eachother to be better.

I also just loved Kanda's fight, because we got to see so much of Kanda's character shine through. I love that surly bitch.

Probably the fastest volumes I've read so far. OMGG this is getting better!

I love that this volumes focus on Kanda, and his fighting style is just chef kiss. The character design for both Kanda, and Skin Boric. The fight scenes were really intense and overwhelming.

I love Kanda even more now, the scene where he pissed off when Allen and the others want to help him to beat Skin Boric, and he was like shut up and go (he even release his power on them lmao).

Short read but addicting!!

Dang it! I like Kanda. Why do bad things only happen to the characters I like?! Kanda shows up, takes care of business, and doesn't like sentimental cliches. Dang it he can't die, my cynical self needs him to hang around. I'm not against all the hopeful bright-eyed characters (with the notable exception of Lenalee), but his snarky-ness is pretty refreshing!

In this volume, it's mostly spent watching Kanda fight Skin Bolic, which is kind of an underwhelming fight to be honest. However, I really love Kanda's art style so I was happy reading it anyway. The team is essentially trying to escape from the arc, but to do that they have to fight their way past the Noah family.

Kanda really came in clutch with this fight. It was really good. I enjoyed this volume and seeing what Kanda can do at full strength.
