Darkness #6

Shadow Watcher

Rate this book
In the wake of ridding their territory of a menace, Sasha has only one pressing duty left: find more human magic workers. And while it is undoubtedly important on some grand scale, the task is, in itself, surprisingly uneventful. That is, until a strange predator takes an interest in her and Charles on their trek home one evening. In the space of twenty-four hours Sasha's life goes from mundane to being stalked and threatened. A new shifter has moved into town, and if the whispered rumors are to be believed, something even more sinister is lurking behind, watching and waiting for the right moment to spring.

But that isn't the only element that turns Sasha's life upside down. She has one hell of a secret that will change her and Stefan's life forever.

This is one of two books requested by, and written for, the fans.

I'm rating this book 4.25 stars. So this review will not just be on this book but the books 1-6 in this series. Which are all the books in this series mainly about Sasha. I have fallen in love with this series and the characters within these books. I usually don't last in series like this, I get bored and stop at book 3. One thing I loved about these books was that they weren't long or drawn out. Each book has less than 200 pages, so you can zip through reading these. Personally, i read all 6 books over 2 days. Which was nice because I could finish the series quickly. I really liked and connected to the MC Sasha and I really liked how she evolved over the 6 books. One thing I do have to say is I always liked Stefan and Sasha together but it was starting to get a little old by book 5. I liked but not loved Stefan's character I think he needed more development and more character. I really liked all the supporting characters like Paulie, Jonas, and Toa. I liked how each of the books in this series had a different plot and a different antagonist. One reason I couldn't give this book 5 stars is that this book specifically needs more but I also liked how this book was kinda closing the door on Sasha & Stefan's story. Lastly, I wanted to say I really enjoyed reading this series and these books took me away into bookland.

5 Stellar Paranormal STARS!!!

I started reading this series coming off some pretty bad contemporary stuff and I knew I had to find me some PNR that would keep my attention...

And man this did...

Sasha has had an extraordinary journey throughout this series, from being the only black power human mage (the most powerful) to fitting into a shadow world no one really sees, to falling in love and in this particular book, becoming a mother....

This series is exceptionally well written and plotted soo uniquely. I mean, things that go bump in the night that are not quite vampires but not quite human either. They wield magic, which is their calling card and use humans to regularly and quite publicly satisfy their carnal urges (hehe, soo prudish of me to say it that way) but these people do fuck alot! As in ALOT!!!

The secondary characters are particularly entertaining especially Toa who looks alot like a another real vampire we know.... always playing the stare game...

And my favourite of ofcorse... Jonas

All the characters surrounding Sasha on this journey to becoming a recognizable mage in a world where humans are thought of as pets, they help in the building of her character, in the making and shaping of her magic and in the end, they are her stregnth... alongside her yummy mate Stefan who only has to breath and they be humpin'

And Jonas... yeah, I'm leaving the best for last....

3.5/5.0

Nice interlude. It is a novella, yet takes in a 9 month period so there is no depth at all. Still, it covers a very happy time, then ends with a cliffhanger into the next book in the series. It really was a nice lull before the storm.

No spoilers

Don't want to spoil the surprise so all I will say is that there is a bit of a cliffhanger at the end, but enjoyed the intrigue, happy surprises, but wish there were more details about the happy days. Lots of time passes in this short novel.

there are some new characters again, as Sasha and Charles are again in search of other humans with magic to pull them into their ranks...

the love is blooming between Sasha and Stefan and Sasha brings two little additions in this story...
I kinda expected, well actually waited for that to happen...it was bound to happen anyway...

and this book ended with a cliffy so I really need to see what happens to Jonas, the brooding, crude but painfuly loyal warrior

Darkness is totally different from The Warrior Chronicles and while the writing isn't as fine and precise as Warriors this series made up with sizzling and steamy romance.
Shadow is actually the 1st in the series that end with "to be continue" but if you get as far as to book 6 you are surely as addicted as I am. K.F Breene's characters are animated and really addictive they are funny but also emotional. Love it!

Shadow Watcher was slow and schmaltzy. This review will be slightly spoilery.

I didn’t enjoy Shadow Watcher as much as I did the previous installments. It seemed a lot like filler to get from book 5 to book 7. There were 2 main storylines going on. The first served the purpose of setting up Jonas’s book…and 122 pages is a lot of set up; because not much happened until the very end of the book.

As Shadow Watcher opens things have been rather quiet now that the Council meeting is over, Sasha has been mated to Stefan and proclaimed Clan Mage and Andris and the Caped Crusader have been taken down. Sasha is spending her time patrolling – looking for human magic workers to bring into the fold – and fulfilling her role (according to Cato) as “Fate’s plan to blend the two sides of magic together and to save the magical race”. After a successful night of patrolling and finding Paulie -halvling of the much untapped potential – Sasha and Charles become aware that they are being stalked and investigated by an unknown Mata – another alpha and not of Tim’s clan. And that’s storyline one – the ongoing clandestine surveillance by the unidentified shifters.

Then there’s storyline 2: the baby debacle. Most of this installment reads like some weird pregnancy fantasy. Sasha is preggers, and yes Stefan’s race is one that struggles with procreation and reveres children – but come ON! The secondary plot revolves entirely around Stefan tearing up and proclaiming his love and devotion for Sasha and his unborn young, Sasha developing a hormonal dependence on Stefan’s presence, Charles and Jonas constantly tearing up and treating her like spun glass and every single person in the Clan invading her space and rubbing her belly like a good luck Buddha. A lot of this is played for laughs – but given that my maternal instinct only extends to cute animals – I was neither amused nor entertained.

The very end of the installment saw Sasha popping out the babe(s) and being able to re-enter the battlefield just as the unknown shifters were giving up their “keep it on the down-low” approach and going on the attack.

I am loving this series the more I read. Paulie is anew and interesting character that I hope to get to know more about. This takes place over a 9 month period with a few surprises both good and bad in between. It ends on a killer cliffhanger.

Fantastic series! Loved this one.

Shadow Watcher is the new installment of the Darkness series by K.F. Breene. It is a tight written paranormal romance series packed with action, smart characters you will love from the first page and lots of action.

I have been following this series from the beginning and it is only getting better with each new installment. No disappointments no surprises. The Main character Sasha are fun to read about is a world building that sucks you right in to the book. The main character Sasha soon realizes soon in this new book that the hunter is now the hunted. And may be the biggest she had to fight in this series till now.

This is a fast paced read with lots of action and exciting things happening, definitely a must read for all readers that are fan of paranormal romance book series that will rock your world!

The next installment of the Darkness series by K.F. Breene is Jonas (Darkness #7) by K.F. Breene. We can't wait!

A nice book with a little cliffhanger in the end. Initially it was a bit confusing to understand what's the story about. I couldn’t picture what I am going into when I read the book description that doesn’t say much. But in the end, you might like it and would probably want to read further.

This was supposed to be the conclusion to Stefan and Sasha's story correct? I thought it was but yet this story ended with so many plot holes and it just felt incomplete. Yes, I know we're getting a Jonas the rapist book but that's not Sasha and Stefan and there's still so much going on with Sasha that is left unanswered.

Then on top of that this book was over in a blink of an eye. For real. Every book in this series is really short- too short if ya ask me- but this one felt even more so. Everything felt rushed and condensed in a few chapters.

And the conflict and villain in this last installment felt forced- like the author just threw something in to make conflict so Sasha and Stefan could have a last story to have babies. It wasn't a big bad evil it was a pesky shapeshifter that Sasha took out with a wave of her hand while she was walking through a garden in labor.

Yeah, so much for a big bad supernatural showdown.

Even though I have complaints I still enjoyed this book. I love that Sasha got pregnant and I loved how Stefan, Charles, Jonas, and everyone in the clan was super protective over her- it was sweet- especially Stefan. I wish we got more time with her being pregnant and Stefan being overprotective, I also wish we got the scene were they found she was having twins but we didn't get that either. Some things just felt rushed and left out unfortunately.

Overall I like this series. It's a short erotic paranormal romance series that can be read pretty quickly if your looking for something not as time consuming. Is this the best PR I've read? No. Not even close. But it does grab your attention and is a little addictive and the first book is free. I think if the author added more "meat" to the story and slowed things down and made the books longer this series could be a lot better especially because the writing is good, but my overall consensus is they are just 'okay'.

Reread;
This book is still so good. I love watching grown, scary, alpha males go all protective and mushy and there are some great scenes in this book with those moments.

4🔥🔥🔥🔥
‘Shadow Watcher’ is book six in K.F Breene’s Darkness series. This story continues on from ‘The Council’. Highly Recommend previous books are read prior to this.

After getting rid of Andris, Trek and the demons life for Sasha and Stefan has been quite. With the promise to find more humans like herself, Sasha and Charles are out people watcher. But they ain’t the only ones out watching and spying. A quiet life is not in the books for Sasha, Stefan and the inner circle, life is about to get a whole double crazier. With a new shifter in the territory The Clan must once again work together with The Pack to find out who is sniffing around.

I’ve been loving this series the constant growth and development between all the characters has been wonderful to read. And it continues on in this book, with so many extra surprises and shocks. New characters show up and becomes a new key person that is interesting and fits into the inner circle with grace.

This book is full of many questions and a new unknown enemy. Watching the Clan all come together along with the Pack, Dom and Toa is always such a scene but when it’s to protect and support one of their own, watch out to anyone that tries to interfere with that.

But that ending needs to be cleared up now.... I can’t wait any longer I need to head over to ‘Jonas’ now.

Did I just stay up till 4AM... to read... yes... yes I did.

The entire god damn book I thought:

I am so pissed, fucking rainbows and unicorns and not even the good kind! I get that it's romance, but the amount of sheer stupid I that I just read... I don't care what anyone says. I did not enjoy this at all. It felt contrived and ridiculous. The conflict felt forced and it was just a book of happy gooey fucking rainbows. God, I'm pissed.

FORGET IT. I quit. You hear me? I QUIT THIS SERIES!

Nah sorry- babies is where I'm out. I always get less interesting in stories when babies are introduced- maybe just me.

Also, the HUMAN women started talked about breeding experiments, and how they were excited about starting breeding. Do not like. I always feel like that a slippery slope, and one step away from taking in magical human women/men- and keeping them just to get them pregnant- the person doesn't matter. You could kind of see that with Pauly's story- they didn't really care about him they just wanted children- he didn't really matter to them.

I'm a tad interested in Jonas' story, and these book are such a fast read-but I think I'm out.

I believe The Shadow Watcher was originally intended to be the 6th and final book in Breene’s Darkness series. At some point she and her publisher made the decision to continue on with 3 more books in the series featuring previous secondary characters. I think because of this decision, this story suffers in comparison to the first 5 books. IMHO this book once the decision was made that it wouldn’t be the final book in the series felt directionless and more like a set-up for future books in the series than any other book had. The fact that it ends with a definite cliff hanger for the next book only adds weight to that sense. The title Shadow Watcher is based on the malevolent character who is supposed to be watching Sasha and the clan from the shadows or in this case hidden in the bushes and tall grasses. But in reality, that character’s existence only plays a small secondary role in the story and his appearance at the end of the book and the way he’s so easily dealt with made his whole presence in the book seem hardly worthy of being the title character. Why he went thought the effort (at the start of the story) of stealing Sasha’s car and then returning it with a note, then risked putting the keys back other than hubris, made no sense to me, since for the rest of the story he very much tries to hide his presence from everyone.
The main focus of this story is not the Shadow Watcher so much as Sasha’s surprise pregnancy which I think was the original plot line for the story when this was going to be the final book. Even this plot line IMHO had too many holes in it. It’s obvious from the beginning that Sasha is very conscience of her menstrual cycle and when she’s supposed to take her birth control pills. Yet it isn’t until lunch with the witches later that day after searching and finding her next pack of pills, that she realizes Aunt Flow hadn’t paid her monthly visit last week. That made no sense to me. And while I understand that at only 22 years old with so much on her plate she didn’t feel ready to be a mom, I thought a lot of her angst was greatly over the top as was much of the story around her pregnancy. She knows the culture she now lives in, the people she now calls hers worship children because they have such a hard time procreating. Stefan had already broached the subject of children with her in an earlier book. So all of her fear and angst over how Stefan would react to her surprise announcement just didn’t make sense. And call me a prude but I’m not sure which I found more gross, Charles and Jonas failure to show any respect for her privacy when they bust in on her in her bathroom or Stefan’s over the top reaction and total lack of decorum when she tells him she’s pregnant? I get that public nudity and even public sex is no big deal in their culture but come on! In fact Charles and Jonas inserting themselves into the situation which should have been a private issue between Sasha and Stefan at least initially as if they had some right to play a role in it felt wrong. I think these scenes were supposed to be funny and in some ways they were, but in other ways I just found them disturbing.
There’s the whole thing with “the farm” which is actually a huge medical complex for the clan’s pregnant women. But why it was so extensive when the clan had such a low birth rate didn’t make any sense to me. And where were the women and the children they had delivered housed after the birth? Perhaps at the same facility? It’s certainly large enough. But we never see any mothers with their children there.
Something else that has bothered me for much of this series that ironically reached a breaking point for me in this story where he somewhat softens towards his approach to Sasha, is Jonas’s relationship with Sasha. He goes from hating her because she’s human, even refusing to aid her when she’s attacked in the first book, to grudging respect for her importance to his clan and his leader Stefan over the course of the series. At some points he even becomes an ad hoc advisor and confidant to her in his own gruff way to help her grow into her leadership role. But even after her ascension to position of the clan’s mage and co-leader, his familiarity and lack of respect for her grated on me. I think Breene was trying for an antagonistic big brother type relationship between Jonas and Sasha where he picks on her but also loves and supports her. But the way he speaks to her, tries to boss her around and often even manhandles her to me felt grossly disrespectful beyond how a big brother would behave to a little sister.
Watching Stefan and his clan’s reaction to their new co-leader’s pregnancy, watching Sasha’s response to her pregnancy as it develops was fun when some of the characters weren’t going far beyond the boundaries of personal space. There was that element of danger from the Shadow Watcher and his people. We had the introduction of a new character a half-breed who has a strong presence in this story. His relationship with the beautiful Selena never seems to goes anywhere. Does it continue in future the future stories as a secondary plot? Charles the consummate manwhore starts making comments that he has feelings for Ann as a teaser to their book. But over all I just felt this book was lacking in comparison to the other books in this series and was more of a teaser for the final books in the series than any other book in this series had.

At this point i have no idea why i even kept on reading. I probably wouldn't have if i would find a good book choice at the moment and because it is on kindle unlimited. There is no reason for this book or any occurring villain besides the fact that Sasha gets pregnant and has her babies. Booya

A lovely interlude type book, where the action and inaction in parts takes place over 9 months.

After coming home from meeting the council and all the mayhem and death that brought, things seem quiet for a while. Stefan and Sasha are enjoying being at home, Sasha is strengthening her magic and her links with the Mata, especially Ann, she is happy to have the friendship of the young mountain lion as she has no female friends of her own age and Ann is filling this role nicely. They get along vey well and I am sure there is some chemistry between Ann and Charles however much she denies it.
Charles and Sasha are out and about trying to find humans that have magic that they don't understand, as they have found them to be really invaluable to the clan like Sasha was and the witches she found who have helped a lot in the battles with the demons. One night whilst out, and hiding in the shadows they noticed a man who could see them through the shadows (just as Sasha could as a child) and they approach him, he tries to run at first fearing what they want, but once they have caught up with him and explained things, he decided to return to the mansion with them and check things out. It turns out that Paulie is very similar to Sasha, he is what is called a halvie, half human.
On the way back to the mansion they discover Sasha's car has been stolen, so they have to walk there and walking past a park but Sasha and Paulie feels something in the shadows, it comes close to them and then circles away. They hurry to the mansion to report their findings and find Sasha's car parked there. It is parked in full sight and fully locked. They open it and Charles smells the presence of a Meta, probably a large cat of some type. But what does he want with Sasha, the other Meta's are brought in to help out and it is discovered that some of their people have been taken and killed and they are sure it is this shadow watcher.
However Sasha also has a bigger challenge to face, she discovers she is pregnant even though she is sure she has not missed her pill. She is cautious of telling Stefan at this time as they have not been together long and there are so many problem around them. However he is over the moon as are the rest of the mansion, they really do treasure and revere their pregnant females as they find it hard to have children and also to carry them to term when they do get pregnant. Even Jonas, the crabby, hell fighter warrior goes all soft and gooey and Charles is over the moon. They keep an even closer eye on her.
When she goes off to the farm where the pregnant women go to be safe and to have their baby (she is having twins too which is highly unusual) Charles and Jonas go with her to keep watch over her, and Stefan is there as much as he can be.
Just as she is going into labour the farm is attacked by the Shadow Watcher and two of his gang, Charles and Ann kill the lesser two but Jonas and Sasha manage to stop the Shadow Watcher and keep him in a magical cage until Stefan and the others get there, but at least he is alive to the questioned which Stefan is keen to do just as soon as he has his babies safely in his arms.
A few hours later Stefan and Sasha become the proud parents of twin babies a boy and a girl.
Now the work on The Shadow Watcher starts.
I have now started book seven and this set off with a bang too

Charles always has me laughing, especially when he is under stress and pushing Sasha. This is a great continuation from the Council and the original 4 book series. Stefan and Sasha are now mated and the insanity ensues when her secret is revealed. Mind you it is when she is on the toilet and sharing no space with Jonas and Charles.
I still wish this had had opportunity for RH for Sasha, even though as the story weaves, it is clear she is best suited with Stefan. But to think - Jonas (unwillingly in love with Sasha - though he won't admit it and now accepted by Stefan to care for her if he is ever not there), Charles (although she treats him more like a juvenile friend - he is HOT and steamy for her, never letting her forget he is always ready for some loving if she is...I suspect somehow he will end up with Ann), Tim (the huggable big Kodiak who shines his deep brown eyes at her glancing at her lips whenever he can and true to his heart willing to hug her whenever he can), and of course Stefan - her mated love.
Adding Paulie to her entourage for security, brings a new element but more like a brother. Even if he is man-whoring like Charles... all the non-humans can't wait to have him attempt breeding with them.
The Clan has now fully accepted her, even Jameson and her secret involves them as well.
I don't like the ending of this book as no harm can come to Jonas. I also don't know that I like the next book being focused on Jonas, yet is still the continuation of Sasha's story. I know without the RH aspect, we eventually have to learn of the individual back story and then expect to see new love interest but I like Jonas as he is in the preceding books... I like him holding hands with Sasha. Just maybe he can find his tranquility some how with her, even with Stefan as primary.

Argh... 1/2 a story and a cliffhanger for Jonah and the who done it.

So, I would give this a 1 star as it is so frustrating. Sasha finds a new mage, Paulie, who is also a orphan. Nice addition since he is at least part human and like Sasha, doesn't talk about what he sees as he will be deemed crazy. While introducing him to their world, there is someone watching them, a shifter if they are correct. Now everyone is on alert, just when Sasha's world gets turned upside down once again. So as they pass the nearly year the stalker or stalkers make another appearance and again. Paulie becomes a great asset and... they show up again we don't get an answer to who and why. So since the first book was like this and wrapped in 3 books, I'm really hoping that happens again with this storyline. I really wish author's would just write these in serial and then release them as a compilation as I'm not interested in read the serial. Also this book isn't long enough to call a book with that ending, it is what 150 pages? Combine it with the next and you would have a novel length, just barely, maybe one more and it would be a nice book length. Now it'll take my page/book down for not even a whole book.

This review is for the WHOLE SERIES

This entire series is great! Stephan and Sasha have amazing chemistry. Charles and Jonas have a special spot in my soul. Don't even get me going on all the other side characters.

This series has a dark romance aspect to a point. However what paranormal/supernatural series doesn't.

The main part of the series follows Stephan and Sasha's meeting and initial 'relationship' (you'll understand the quotes when you read it) in the first book, and as the books progress it gets deeper... There are battles, dark forces, magic learned, life or death situations. Plenty of action, adventure, heartache and of course... SPICE. I won't rate spice because everyone sees it differently. There's stalking behavior, kidnap-ish behavior, and definitely touch her and die feels as well. By the end of Sasha and Stephan's books in the series I was BEGGGGGGGGGGINNNG for Charles and Jonas, let me say, NONE of these books disappointed me. The only issue I think I had was with time jumping. That being said, it makes sense now with how many books there ended up being.

If it says ANYTHING to anyone, I read these in 2014 and am just doing the review 10 years later and can still remember them... Every.. last... one of them. They were so captivating, I devoured 1 a day until I finished them all.

Sasha is seeking out humans with magic and recruiting them. She discovers Paulie, a street-wise former gang member and convict.

Sasha, Charles and Paulie all notice the presence of a foreign shifter but are unable to locate it. They know it’s not one of Tim’s and let him know of its incursion into their territory.

Much like Sasha, Paulie didn’t have family while growing up and almost immediately takes to living and training at the Mansion. Oh, the constant availability of willing sexual partners doesn’t hurt either.

Sasha finds out she pregnant (with twins!) She becomes an instant celebrity amongst the residents of the Mansion as babies are revered and twins are beyond any of their wildest expectations.

Meanwhile the foreign shifters (probably from the European faction) seem to appear sporadically and are yet to be caught.

Sasha takes up residence at the facility for pregnant females. She manages to capture one of the shifters as it attempts to attack her. Charles and Ann take down two others.

I had tears in my eyes from laughing at the various character’s reactions to Sasha's pregnancy and going into labor.

Unfortunately, the book doesn’t have a happy ending. (The title of Book 7 will give you a clue)

This is the [fake] "finale" of Sasha and Stefan ... and apparently where we meet Paulie.
I mean I liked him but I kinda felt he suddenly jumped into too big a role/was "too perfect" - in that for someone who didn't do much he was SO KEY/always there? Hard to explain. It just felt a lot of it was "tell not show" and I wasn't entirely convinced about him. Which is funny cuz I quite liked him.

ANYWAY.

...

the whole "Farm" thing - and the human witches. I was never entirely sold on them but they played bigger and bigger convenient parts.

Waffled between 2 and 3 stars but the more I write for this review, a mere 4 days after reading it I can't really remember any particulars other than "The Farm" [and what happens directly after] and Sasha and [Charles? Jonas?] first meeting Paulie.
I can't even remember when the human witches first appeared. Maybe this book? Maybe earlier?

So ... C--

Riveting - spoiler alert

Absolutely riveting!! From start to finish I just couldn’t get enough!! I adore Paulie!! Love his strength and determination! Huge asset to the clan. I laughed so much throughout Shadow Watcher and even shed a tear or two. Can you fall even more in love with Stefan- oh Absolutely!! Stefan with the babies is just heart melting! Loved what he said to Sasha while holding the twins. Their family is growing conventionally and non conventionally. Example Paulie is new and Sasha has earned his complete loyalty and love. Stefan earned it with the words he spoke to Tim about him. He now feels he has found his family and pledged his loyalty and life for them. Heart Warming!
Of course the continuing banter between the boys had me in stitches. The banter with Charles and Ann had me snorting away. Loved when Paulie asked Charles “How old are you” after his rant about not joining Sasha’s detail. Hilarious!!

Wow! Very good read!

Every time I think Sasha is maturing and getting the hang of being a co-leader of these people, she goes and does something stupid like wanders off by herself when she knows there's a stalker! There's a time and place to test your bodyguards, even though you really shouldn't because they are just that, your Bodyguards, this wasn't the best time to do it. And asking that stupid question over and over again "how did this happen?",... maybe because every 10 to 20 Pages you're dropping trou and spreading your legs for your husband? I don't know maybe that's how it happened! I love Paulie he's a great addition, I'm looking forward to seeing how it all works out with him and the rest of the humans, as well as Charles and Ann and whatever is brewing there. The ending of the book was awesome can't wait to read the next one it's the first one that has a cliffhanger.

A VERY unexpected surprise for Sasha and Stefan

Sasha and Charles are out and about around town hanging out near “new age” type shops/ cafes in an attempt to find more human mages. It’s definitely not as easy as she thought it would be!

Things are progressing in the right direction when suddenly they take notice of an unfamiliar shifter. That’s cause for concern because they’re familiar with all of the local shifters under Tim’s leadership. Where is this shifter from and who if anyone are they reporting to?

Trying times and major discoveries rock Sasha’s world. To be fair it was very literally the last thing she expected to happen.

Absolutely love this series, it’s easy to get attached to the characters. I just wish these were full sized books not novella sized. Sure it makes the pace of the story fast but I just want a bit more of the characters if possible *shrug*.
