Dead Rapture Series #2

Love at the End of Days

Rate this book
Romance and zombies collide in the riveting sequel to Love in the Time of the Dead.

Four years into the Dead outbreak that ended the world, Vanessa Summers has been so burned by love, she swears she will never trust a man again. But Sean Daniels, guard leader of Dead Run River, isn’t just any man. When past lovers return to the colony, things get complicated. Desperate to rid herself of the heartache, Vanessa signs up for a supply run that will test her mettle as a guard in training. Sean volunteers to lead her team, and his hungry looks say it’s more personal than professional.

Danger comes from all sides as they scavenge Dead-infested cities, and as her attraction for Sean deepens, Vanessa finds her head and heart at war with each other. He clouds her judgment, and the slightest misstep could spell disaster outside of the safety of colony gates.

A race back to the safety Dead Run River could save a teammate’s life, but trouble has been brewing back home. Laney Landry, the woman who broke Sean’s heart, is in trouble, and Vanessa must decide whether to take back the Denver colony beside the man she’s falling in love with, or bow out of an attraction that terrifies her.

Weathering Dead hybrids, betrayals, battles, jealousy, and soul consuming love, Vanessa must find her place in the team she’s found. And if she can, she might just master survival at the end of days.

Born and raised in small town Texas, Tera Shanley grew up in books. Her cousin gifted her a signed copy of Beauty by Bill Wallace when she was young and that was it for her. So smitten was she with getting lost in a story, that while other eleven year olds her age were groaning at the accelerated reader program in school, she was racking up the points just for fun.

Balancing chronic book-wormyness is her devotion to the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, camping - her soul is happiest out of doors. And lucky for Tera, her family feels the same. She grew up a wild child helping her grandma ranch cattle, and has a hundred memories out in the wilderness which tend to influence her books.

When she's not eating chocolate, slinging rifles, or soaking up some sun, she's lost in a book, but these days it's more often one she's writing. From historic western romance, to paranormal romance, to apocalyptic (zombie) romance, the genre doesn't matter quite as much to her as the love story.

She currently lives with her husband and two young children, and is owned by two crazy mini-cujos.

Everything about this series is amazing. I could gush, and gush, and gush about it. But it'd be better if you stopped wasting time reading it's reviews and just bought it and devoured it. Okay?

It was ok but I didn't like it as much as the first one, probably because it was about Sean & Vanessa 2 particularly unlikable characters from the first book. Lots of reviews mention this and how reading this book made them actually understand and like Sean & Vanessa better but even though they were more sympathetic this time around I still didn't particularly warm to them or care over much about them. Sean is still kind of an ass, the improvement this time around is he knows this and is at least trying to change. Vanessa is still a bitch and I was annoyed by her acting like the wronged woman, even if only in her thoughts. She barely knew Mitchell and as far as I could tell from the previous book they didn't even date yet she acts like Laney 'stole'him. And she had been a mega bitch to Laney from the moment she arrived at camp before she even met Mitchell. I was also annoyed by Sean's acting like he had loved and lost Laney when that was not what actually what happened. They had a mutual attraction, a couple of interactions where he treated her badly and pushed her away then they agreed to be friends. Even though Vanessa annoyed me I did prefer her to Sean and I did like her determination to become a guard and her smart mouth with the other guards.

Pleasantly good read

I started reading this book not knowing it was the second in the series. It didn't matter. The story was complete on its own and really rather good. So good in fact I read it in two days.

Disclaimer...

I was so excited to get started with this book. I wanted needed more… and it really should not have come as a surprise that there was a change of POVs, but it did, and it wrecked me. My love for the characters introduced in the first novel resulted in me holding a grudge against the protagonists in this one. It took me a few chapters to be able to really enjoy this novel for what it was and to grow to appreciate it on its own accord.

With that said…

Love at The End of Days is a perfect sequel. It holds it own in originality and adds significantly to the storyline of the trilogy that it leaves your yearning for the final installment. Shanley continues right where the epilogue drops off with narratives much like the first: witty, humorous, and detailed enough to paint a picture without being overly redundant. I did feel that there were places where the characters intents or feelings were explicit when they need not be perhaps this was for the benefit of those who did not read the first novel.

Vanessa Summers is a feisty young adult struggling to find herself in a Dead ridden world. Desperate to escape the return of the man who left her with unrequited love, to overcome the nightmares from a Dead attack, and to tend to her wounded ego without interference of those that caused her hurt, she jumps at the opportunity to leave the gates of safety to embark on a supply run that will determine her value as a Guard. As if the mission’s impact on the survival of humanity was not enough to dwell on, Vanessa soon realizes she the gorgeous Mr. Hot&Cold, Sean Daniels, will lead the team confusing her turbulent emotions further.

Sean Daniels has been in agony since the return of the woman he lost due to his foolish need to be overprotective, seeing her swollen belly only gutted his heart further, so when he begins to notice the feisty and impossible Vanessa Summers, he does not know what to think, much less what to feel. When asked to lead a team on a medical supply run, Sean becomes torn between desires to lead and to stay behind to look after his daughter, his conflicted conscious only increases when his judgment begins to become clouded with his attraction to Vanessa.

The needs of the mission prevail. The team sets out intent on gathering the necessary medical supplies necessary but soon after they leave the safety of the colony, a shocking encounter with the Dead threatens their lives and rattles the team to the core. Sean and Vanessa’s inhibitions go to hell as the travesty draws them closer. Their return to the colony leads to yet another unexpected discovery, one that not only tests growing relationships and character but also the way the colony carries on.

These characters are without a doubt damaged, their flaws only heightened by the roles they played in the first novel. Vanessa starts out as an annoying, hot headed, spurned woman making it difficult to like her, being attacked by a Dead was the best thing that could have happened to her. That moment served as the catalyst for the woman she became in this novel. Her grow into a levelheaded creature with mature ideals was bumpy and incredible at times, but served her well in the end. I grew to like her and did not expect to during the first few chapters. Sean had the same effect; though he was immensely more likeable from the get go. He is strong and a natural born leader who cares about those he leads, he has never been intentionally callous or used his good looks to his advantage. I admire that in his character. Character development as a whole was well done; both the main and secondary characters nurtured an emotional connection throughout the novel, as did the plot.

To say I was blindsided would be understated, there were twists and turns that left me flabbergasted. I did a double take and had to think for a moment.

Am I comfortable with where this is going?

Yep. Totally.

Tell me what happens!

The novel is captivating from start to finish. While I found some moments in character development and growth were a bit forced and insincere, I was able to look past it as the storyline unfolded. Overall, Love At The end of Days has the perfect combination of danger, romance, and emotional turmoil with resolve that leaves you itching for what comes next. I know I can’t wait!

Psychocat Reads Review of LOVE AT THE END OF DAYS by Tera Shanley

(I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)

I started reading LOVE AT THE END OF DAYS about 15 minutes after I finished the review for LOVE IN THE TIME OF THE DEAD (review here). Unfortunately it was late and I had to get up early the next morning, so I couldn't stay up all night read. Fortunately, I had to get up early to spend 3 hours on a flight to Minneapolis, so I had plenty of time to read the next day.

Let's see if the second book lived up to the first.

The Book As Part of a Series: This is one where you could easily pick it up and read it before reading LOVE IN THE TIME OF THE DEAD, and still enjoy the book. Of course, that doesn't mean you'll enjoy it quite as much as if you read them in order. Book one essentially serves as backstory to LOVE AT THE END OF DAYS, and helps you understand where the characters are coming from. My recommendation, start at the beginning so you don't miss anything.

The Characters: LOVE AT THE END OF DAYS continues with the characters we met in LOVE IN THE TIME OF THE DEAD. Laney and Mitchell shift into secondary roles for this book, though they still play important parts in this story. This time we get to focus more on Sean and Vanessa. They've both done a bit of growing up since we saw them last, and they have more to do as this book progresses. With this second book, Tera continues to do an excellent job of building multi-dimensional characters that are fun to follow.

The Relationships: While there may be a budding and often struggling romance at the heart of the story, this book doesn't fall into the trap of forgetting there is so much more going on around that. The main romance is captivating, but the secondary relationships really fill the story out to keep a great pace and keep readers engaged. I loved that we continue to see the relationships that were built or featured in the first book. It's also great that each of them are woven into the decisions that Vanessa and Sean make.

Too Perfect or Perfectly Flawed: As I said with book one, it's a bit difficult to end up too perfect when you have characters fighting to survive the zombie apocalypse. In the end, LOVE AT THE END OF DAYS manages to bring a perfectly flawed story of human nature and what it means to love when the world as we know it no longer exists.

Jen's Final Rating: 5 STARS! LOVE AT THE END OF DAYS is a wonderful continuation of series. The zombie parts are full of action, but there is so much more depth to the story and I found myself completely absorbed in the entire thing. I hope Tera has more in store for this group. Maybe something for Finn?!?!?

Psychocat's Final Rating: 5 CLAWS!! This crazy cat seems to have an unhealthy amount of pleasure in reading about bad ass women wielding knives and guns. Please keep all weapons (or anything that could potentially turn into a weapon) away from Psychocat.

When I first wrote my review I did so on my nook color on a memo app. I didn't have my laptop on me while on vacation so I jotted down a stellar review (if I must say so) after coming fresh off the book and battling my intense emotions from this freaking amazing read. But when I got home from vaca my nook quickly connected to wifi and ended up deleting my reviews after an update.

This book starts off right where LOVE IN THE TIME OF THE DEAD ended. And this time we get two different POVs. We get the take on two people who are probably not ready to see Mitchell or Laney so soon. Two people that have their reasons. But fans of Laney can rest easy though, she has quite a bit screen time in this one still. Something huge happens towards the end that will take the story in a completely different direction. And I was so shocked, yet happy, with how it all went down. In fact, let’s go with blown away. Yeah, that sounds about right.

I have got to say I was more thrilled with Sean this time around than I was in the first book. I loved how his character had softened somewhat and how he was soon becoming attracted to Vanessa. And even though she can be a hard person to be around, she was a great character to read about. I enjoyed her sense of humor and understood where she was coming from where Laney was involved. I am not saying I am siding with her, because I ain't. But I understand her from a woman’s perspective. We all like to have somewhere to focus are jealousy on. And I like to think that Laney understood it too. You’ll see as you read the book.

If you have read book one, I wholeheartedly suggest you pick up this one and finish out the series. I can almost guarantee you are going to love this one. I flew through this one while in the car headed towards our vacation…and after I was finished I still craved more. I still had these people on my mind and wished I hadn’t finished it so quickly. I still wanted to pick up my nook and read more about them. That is how I knew it was a great book. I kept thinking back on it long after it was done.

Zombieriffic....LOVED IT!

This is the second book in the Dead Rapture series and I really enjoyed enjoyed reading more about the characters we had met before, and meeting some new ones. To be honest I really did not like Sean in the first book, I thought he was a dick the way he kept pushing Laney away and then when she realises she has loved Mitchell all along he decides he wants her. I was also equally shocked when I learned that the second book would have Vanessa as a love interest becasue...well she was a bitch!

WOW was I wrong, I loved Sean and I loved Vanessa, they were just awesome characters and I have to say that I liked them more that Laney and Mitchell! oooohhhhhh. Once we get into the minds of Vanessa, we learn that she wasn't really a bitch, she was just misunderstood, she thought she was in love with Mitchell, but really she was in love with the fact that she was wanted by someone and when he chose Laney it broke her heart. Sean was still so destroyed by the death of his wife, that he really didn't love Laney, sure he was attracted to her but it was infatuation, they never fit together.

Sean and Vanessa together were perfect.

When they both sort their shit out and give in to what they are feeling they realise that they are perfect together. Apart from the awesome love story there is zombie, death, killing, hybrids, edge of the seat moments that made the book a winner for me. I love the world that Tera has created, a little bit of romance, a little bit of tension, a little bit of zombie. It is a gold combination for me.

If you love all things Zombie that give this series a go, you will enjoy the ride....and the blood and guts!!!!

Once again Miss Shanley ruined me for sleep and getting anywhere on time while I devoured this book from beginning to end. The second in her Dead Rapture series I daresay is even better than the first.

She brings on the action, the romance, the heat and high steaks with seeming effortless ease. Meanwhile, my heart pounded, my pulse raced, and I turned into a zombie myself due to lack of sleep.

I'll admit I wasn't a huge fan of Sean Daniels at the end of the first book. I was also not too thrilled about Vanessa Summers. In both instances simply because I get all ‘no one messes with Laney and Mitchell and makes it past me’. I get just a little possessive of my peeps.

However—a BIG however—Shanley kicked my ass with this one and made me do a total 180 within the first few paragraphs.

What marks Miss Shanley as one of the greats is she not only managed to make me love Sean and Vanessa as their own people, but fall completely in love with them as a couple. Their relationship has all the earmarks of a true 'romance': want but can't have, life altering decisions that threaten to tear them apart, and blazing hot chemistry.

Simply put, they were sexy together and formidable in their own rights. And the snarky humor from Vanessa was spot-on.

Love at the End of Days had me absolutely hooked. There were unexpected twists that hit me in the pit of my stomach. There was intrigue surrounding the birth of Laney's baby. (Nope, I’m not giving away spoilers!) There were moments I gasped in horror and surprise, and pages that had me tearing up. Oh, and then there was that one time when Sean and Vanessa got so hot I thought I was going to combust. Dayum.

This is such an amazing apocalypse novel by a truly talented writer! “Walking Dead” eat your heart out.

I absolutely loved book one and couldn't wait to read this one. Love these characters, this book has many ups and downs and trials and tests that Vanessa seems to have to pass to be able to graduate as a guard. I thought her first time out with Finn was fantastic, she kicks ass... wow! After her initial shock and freeze up she goes and saves the day. Laney and Mitchell are back and just as in love as ever, surprise surprise surprises and a fight for their lives. Sean is sexy as ever, heartbroken or so he thinks but then turns his attention to Vanessa. Love these two together, I get their worry about being together they've both been hurt and they both have to fight for their lives. Love Ade she's too damn cute and smart. Love Finn too he's kick ass and grumbly but has a great smile and only wants what's best for his family.

This book is action packed, heartbreaking and kick ass! Amazing descriptions and moments. My only let down a little was (I don't want to ruin anything) but Vanessa's neck; was it one thing or the other, never really found out and the epilogue I wanted more with the Sean and Vanessa relationship. But other than that this book was amazing, Tera sure knows how to tell a story, I loved how these characters rallied around their make-shift family and never gave up. Creepy hospital guy , my hair was standing on edge and those weird ass people in Denver, love that Sean did the right thing there. Can't wait for more, maybe Finn will find true love next?? 4.5 to 5 stars review by Nanee at upallnightreadallday.blogspot.com

To be fair I did start with this book rather than reading in sequence, so I am suffering from some plot gaps.

I am tossing in the towel at 35%. The author is not a bad writer. I wanted to get that out there.

5 ENTHUSIASTIC STARS! Fans of the Walking Dead will love the zombie action when Vanessa ventures outside the compound for the first time in 4 years. She makes a bad-ass guard, I love her character development. She's so determined to take charge of herself and overcome her fears after her near-zombie attack in the previous book. Sean Daniels (hellooo nurse!) has some great development, too. I was pretty mad at him after his closed off antics in Love In The Time of the Dead, but he makes some great strides and learns a lot about himself in this book. And OH GAWD wait til you see what happens with Laney!

I think you could probably read this as a stand alone, (for the action and excitement alone) but if you do you'll want to go back and read Love In The Time of the Dead, too. Now I can't wait for Book Three!

Not as good as the first

The second book of the Dead Rapture series wasn't horrible, but I enjoyed the first one with Laney and Mitchell as the main characters much more. It is hard to like Vanessa when she was so nasty to Laney in the first book, and even before she knew Mitchell liked Laney. She was just horrible. In this book Vanessa and Sean begin to notice each other and fall madly and unbelievably in love...like seriously so ridiculous are their thoughts about one another that it is just not believable. I couldn't put the first book down and this one I always forgot to pick back up, and the only reason I did was because I paid for it. I'll probably still read the last book though, because it focuses on Laney and Mitchell's daughter Soren, who ends up being a little "different", and I want to know what comes off her.

I started this one right on the heels of Love in the Time of the Dead and was admittedly wary of leaving Laney's POV since I'd grown attached, but getting into Vanessa's head ended up being so very cool. She's much more complicated than she seems on the surface, and I would've never expected her to be such a badass. This book was loaded with new threats to the colonists, which kept it exciting and unexpected all the way through but with no less of the emotional impact as its predecessor.

Keeps getting better

I wasn't so sure about this series when I first started reading it. But still, it didn't take long until I was hooked. It has some really cool twists to it. There's romance but not the cheesy kind and a lot of situations between lovers and ex lovers we can all relate to. But then you also have the blood , gore , and fighting you expect from a zombie series! And with some series they tend to lose steam after the first book or so but not The Dead Rapture series it just keeps getting better . Can't wait to read book 3. Read it you'll love it ! It's become one of my favs.

A great continuing story in a great series!

It was full of action, intrigue and of course, love!

It was great to get to go along with some characters we didn't spend much time with in the first book and get more of the story a year later!

Fun read.
