Vegetables in Underwear

Rate this book
A picture book from author-illustrator Jared Chapman, “ Vegetables in underwear ? Guaranteed preschool hilarity . . . Expect second, third, and more helpings of this scantily clad harvest” ( Horn Book magazine).

A bunch of friendly vegetables wear colorful underwear of all varieties—big, small, clean, dirty, serious, and funny—demonstrating for young ones the silliness and necessity of this item of clothing. The unexpectedness of vegetables in their unmentionables is enough to draw giggles, but the pride with which the “big kid” attire is flaunted in front of the baby carrots in diapers will tickle readers of all ages.

With rhyming text that begs to be chanted aloud and art that looks good enough to eat, this vibrant story will encourage preschoolers to celebrate having left those diapers behind!

A cute book...

Very colorful with funny, engaging text. I bit too simple for older children though. We enjoyed it and will definitely check out more of this author’s books.

A cute beginning book about vegetables and their underwear. I’m sure you can guess that this was picked out at the library by my nephew. He and the niece giggled at the cover, but the niece didn’t read this. It really is about underwear.

The nephew thought this was funny. He giggled his way through it. He loved the potato’s crack that was showing. He gave this 5 stars.

I think it’s good for his age, but it’s pretty bland for my age.

...will never look at vegetables the same - ever again...but will still look forward to broccoli with lots of butter...and pepper...always a hit! Fun book that takes two very different images and mashes them together, coming up with something that will make you smile and laugh. A fun book that both kids and adults will enjoy!

This is a fairly silly book about underwear, and it probably doesn't deserve five stars, but I just loved the illustrations SO MUCH!

This book has some lovely pictures of smiley vegetables, happy broccoli, grinning turnips, and friendly corn on the cob all tell us about their underwear. There was nothing giggly about the fact they were talking about their underwear, which was good, but the text was just about large, small, days of the week - usual stuff. Nice pictures of happy vegetables though. The copy I borrowed from the library is a board book.

No real rating for a picture book. It was pretty awesome though.

I saw the whole youtube video for this book and read a google preview. Vegetables are cute in underwear.

This is one of those books where you get exactly what the title says. The text is pretty sparse, but the illustrations are amusing. The potato showing his buttcrack is priceless.

It's not earth-shattering in its profundity, and it probably won't teach anyone anything (unless, for some reason, you need to be told to put clothes on over top of your underwear). As a kid, I probably would've looked at this once and then moved on to something more interesting... but I'm sure there are probably kids out there for whom this could become a favourite.

The title says it all! Vegetables in Underwear by Jared Chapman shows a variety of vegetables, all with cute little stick figure arms and legs and itty-bitty eyes and mouths, wearing an assortment of underwear in a series of adorable and humorous poses. You get Broccoli in red undies, Corn in pink underpants, Celery in freshly cleaned underwear, and Pea in a different pair of drawers for each day of the week! (My favorite: Onion striking a serious pose in white briefs.) Using bold illustrations and simple text, Chapman creates a whimsical procession of contrasting pairs, like big and little underwear and old and new underwear, so that young readers will learn about the concept of opposites in a fun, giggle-inducing way. Rarely have vegetables been this enjoyable.

If you like Vegetables in Underwear— and you will, because, really, who doesn’t love underwear?— be sure to check out Jared Chapman’s equally entertaining Pirate, Viking, & Scientist and Steve, Raised by Wolves.

I like this book .it is colorful and a good size for toddler to read it . We can use this to train toddler to wear diaper and there have different kind of underwear. When children heard this book they may say I am big kid and I wear underwear. When I read this book in front of children I may ask them question like this do you wear underwear , are you a baby or big kid.

Since Evie is still in diapers and will be for quite awhile still, this isn't a great one for her. However, she liked to look at the pictures and perhaps one day she will vaguely remember the friendly looking vegetables in underpants and want to continue eating veggies. (Or she'll think vegetables are like meat and refuse to eat anything that she thinks has feelings. Kids are so complicated.) Anyway...a cute one for the potty training crowd.

There's this book, but there's also Veggies with Wedgies, so I'm wondering if it's time to dress fruit up in clothing now?

You have to look under the dust jacket, but in the back of the book, the pea is running with his underwear in his hand. That's my favorite picture, but I also love the baby veggies.

SUMMARY: This book introduces little ones to the wonderful concept of underwear. It shows how much fun underwear can be as well as some of the problems we might face with underwear (such as a pair being too small). But most important of all, This book teaches us that underwear is not for babies!

ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations appear to be digitally rendered. They are simple for the younger viewers, full of fun, color and humor. My favorite illustrations were of the underwear that was too big for the radish and too small for the potato. The poor potato has some serious amount of bum sticking out!

THE GOOD: First, I must start by saying that the book confused me at first. I thought this was going to be a book about vegetables using underwear as the catalyst (the end papers have a visual of each vegetable labeled with its name; onion, broccoli, etc.) when this is actually a book about underwear using vegetables as a catalyst. Once I figured out the purpose of the book, I saw how completely adorable it is. And what better way is there to introduce little ones to the concept of wearing underwear than to use cute vegetables? The book discusses many different concepts of underwear from the names we call them by to the difference between boys' and girls' underpants. And the best part is "Babies don't wear underwear...Sorry, babies."
THE NOT AS GOOD: This is nit picky, but when writing a book for children as young as 2, I really don't like to see the use of contractions such as "There's big underwear..." and "There's underwear for Monday..." There was plenty of room for the "is."

AGE RECOMMENDATION: AGES 2-5

All different sorts of vegetables demonstrate the joys of wearing big-kid underwear in all sorts of colors and styles. Never taking the subject too seriously, this book celebrates an often under-appreciated piece of clothing. One after another vegetables show the different sorts of underwear from dirty to clean, big to small, and serious to funny. But there is one sort of kid who doesn’t wear underwear, since babies wear diapers. Suitable giggle-worthy, these grinning vegetables invite young children to join the underwear ranks.

Chapman has written this book in an infectious rhyme that is jaunty and adds much to the fun of reading this book aloud. One never quite knows what is on the next page, except that it will be friendly and fun. The book ends with a silly reminder that you should have your clothes on top of your underwear before you leave the house, something that will have preschoolers laughing along.

Chapmas has created an entire garden of smiling vegetables here. Using whitespace very nicely, they pop on the page in all of their colorfulness. The vegetables are friendly, approachable and entirely silly. Children will immediately get the joke of vegetables being the ones to show humans how to wear undies.

Funny and friendly, this is a great pick for potty training giggles. Appropriate for ages 3-5.

This silly book about underwear actually may teach a young reader a thing or two. It goes over the days of the week and different words for underwear, as well as different vegetables. There was no real plot line to this book, but it was a fun little read that I'm sure young children will find silly. I'm not sure about incorporating it into a classroom because I personally wouldn't want parents to get upset about it and them come to me angry because their child is reading a book about underwear, but it is a fun book for a child to have at home. The illustrations were all pretty simple but depicted vegetables in underwear and did so with bold colors to go along with the fun story line. This book made me smile because it was so silly, so that is why I really liked it.

We aren't reading a whole lot of picture books these days, but this one caught our attention at the library and we decided to bring it home with us. Silly book that brought lots of giggles. We'll be reading it again for sure.
