Kanban from the Inside takes a distinctive approach to the Kanban Method — using a system of nine values to explain what it is, to give insight into how its practitioners think, and to offer practical advice on how to apply it. Readers new to Kanban will understand why and how it works, while those with experience will appreciate its fresh perspective and the connections it makes with a range of related models.
What Mike has done is write three short books, each easily digested and valuable in its own right, which are tied together by the common thread of organizational values. In the first, he expands on his blog posts about the values that tie Kanban practices and principles neatly together into a single integrated whole, reminding me of the arguments for using ALL of the XP practices at a time when people were trying to pick and choose. The second "book" is a concise introduction of all of the most common models and tools used by Kanban practitioners. It's not exhaustive, but it's complete enough and it will save you having to read twenty other books to get a good overview of the conceptual toolkit we use. In the final "book" Mike does what all the other Kanban books do and that's tell you how to get started with Kanban. He does it neatly and elegantly, weaving in a systems thinking approach is a no-nonsense manner. I recommend it as a first read and I think all Kanban practitioners can find something valuable here regardless of their level of experience.
The book is very good with very, very good advices, checklists and reasonings. however, sometimes the books goes fastly and shallowy over topics that doesnt help the average reader to understand anything. Specially in the middle, where tha author correlates diferents methods from various aspects to Kanban itself. It seems more like a great review of literature for academic purposes, but for a public that is barely interested in that. The final part is an outstanding guide to implement Kanban. Even five years later.
Deep book on Kanban focusing practices and pricinciple about a set of values cleverly built. Contains practical recomendations for starting with teams in part III, explalining STATIK, Systems Thinking Approach to Introducing Kanban. The part II, Models, contains helpful introductions to topics like Agile, TPS, Lean, TOC or Complexity, but sometimes in a too superficial way.
This book is a really useful guide to Kanban. Mike draws together a number of techniques, both Lean and Agile, to show how they can fit together. There is great guidance in here for everyone from novice to expert.
A very good approach to all theory and practices surrounding Kanban Method. Anyhow, it's a must because its detailed explanation of STATIK, a practical guide to implement and assess your Kanban implementation organically.
Great work from Mike Burrows, best content so far on STATIK approach. Although, I felt a little confused with the structuring made around values and principles, which made me go back and forth around the book.
A very nice book and a must-read for anyone who thinks to use Kanban. The author covers the basics and discusses the main difference between Kanban and the different systems like ToC and lean, etc... Highly recommended

Almost stopped reading when I got to the chapters describing Agile but then BOOM! great final chapters with Kanban Board design, tips to introduce the method. Going to read this book again!
In order to understand the Kanban method well, you must first know the values and principles behind the Kanban method. This book will teach you what these values are and why.
Este livro é muito útil para pessoas que estão implantando kanban, ele traz diversos insights que são verdadeiros atalhos para você conseguir tem uma melhor performance no seu sistema.
For people like me, who have only rudimentary knowledge about the Kanban method, this book is a very good introduction.
I am a Scrum expert and already assisted teams using (very simple) Kanban boards. But this is the first time I dealt with this topic in a much deeper sense. Mike not only explains the Kanban Foundational Principles and Core Practices, but also introduces nine related values. In addition, he also gives a lot of helpful advices and provides a roadmap on how to implement Kanban using STATIK, the Systems Thinking Approach to Introducing Kanban.
An excellent book that was of great help to better understand what is behind Kanban. However, I can’t say if this book is of interest for more experienced people in the Kanban field.
1) It explains Kanban based on its values. Just for that the book has some bonus points on my score card. Having seen so many hollow implementations of Agile that just blindly followed the mechanics without an understanding of the underlying ideas, I appreciate what the author is trying to do here. To quote a fellow colleague "Culture trumps process". I believe understanding, communicating, respecting and being able to live according to ones values paves the way for better culture and work-environment.
2) It describes Kanban as a framework that can and should be extended with other tools and models in order to achieve continuous / sustainable improvement. Reminded me of Appellos Mojito method (which I'm as you might guessed pretty much a fan of). The chapters where the author compares Kanban to Lean, Theory of Constraints, Agile, et al. are for themselves alone reason enough to buy this book.
3) It pays special attention to the human aspect of change both through the values and the STATIK model (System Thinking Approach To Introduce Kanban)
"Kanban from the inside" is the best Kanban "from scratch" book around at the moment. Without assuming any previous knowledge it takes the reader through all the Kanban concepts like values, principles, practices, up to the STATIK model to help people introduce Kanban in their environment. The book is very clear and everything is explained in simple term (no use of fancy words for the sake of it, I love this!). It's also packed with real life examples that help understanding it even more. I recommend it both to people new to Kanban who want to know more, and to expert people who might benefit from going through the basics all over again (the STATIK model in particular is probably a gem for them)
Wonderful introduction to Kanban, linking values to principles and practices, focusing on outcomes and, at least to me, making it clear the importance of tracking change experiments to the system or service alongside the delivery of the work items.
