Eggnog makes me nervous and I won't drink it because I'm afraid it could either kill me or make me so ill that I wish I was dead. There. Finally got that off of my chest.
Other than the eggnog, things are looking pretty good in Winter Cocktails, a collection of delicious hot and cold alcoholic drinks and some nibbles to go along with. The skills needed to do most of these recipes seem fairly sophisticated but I jotted down a few that I think I can handle.
I've got my eye on the Nutella Melt, Hot Toddy, Liquid Gold (a pineapple drink), and the White Witch (a tasty concoction with spices, chai, and ginger).
I enjoyed that this book contains for recipes of egg nog alone. It’s a little strange that there is a large chunk of appetizer recipes at the end that felt like filler. As an ex-Wisconsinite I was affronted by the absence of a Tom & Jerry, my favorite Christmas cocktail.
I decided to start rating cookbooks, because I buy so many of them, and because maybe people actually want to know how something turned out before they pick it up?
These are some snazzy winter cocktails, and while some recipes have accessible ingredients that wouldn't be too hard to put together, some others are not for the feint-of-cooking-heart. I have so far tried the two hot chocolates, and simply put, they are worth every.bit.of.the.effort. Rich, divine, sometimes a bit more edible than drinkable they are still delightful.
The only reason I didn't give this five stars is because it needs some e-book work. I hate when e-book cookbooks make you jump a million links, and this one sort of does that. still, if you want something a bit special this winter, this is a fantastic collection.
Orange, Cardamom and Pistachio Mexican Wedding Cakes! That's just one of the delicious recipes at the end of the book to compliment the drinks and brews offered by the authors. You may recognize some of your favorite cocktails, but the recipe will be completely enhanced and more interesting. From making your own sour mix to homemade marshmallows, this book is a gift for everyone and every season. A book to own!
I picked this out because it was available and looked interesting. Lots of recipes for many types of drinks as well as a few appetizers to go with them. Most are the standard recipe you’d expect but she also had riffs and twists on several that look interesting enough to give a try (Eve’s addiction for hard apple spiced cider/Wassail; several takes on eggnog as well). Looking forward to trying a few.
Interesting little book for winter beverage recipes. You really have to have a well-stocked bar to make many of them, but that just speaks to the variety included in the book.
Stunningly beautiful book. And it has attached ribbon bookmark! Which I always love. Now I have to decide which drink to mark to try first. So many choices.
The layout, pictures, brief histories, and instructions make this book really stand out.
I love hot drinks when the weather gets cold, so this is the perfect book for me. However, because I'm pregnant I can't try most of the drinks right now. I do like how this book offers whole sections on non-alcoholic options for those who can't or don't drink. I want to try the non-alchololic "Applejack Toddy" on page 28, the "Hot Buttered Rum" on page 30, the "Classic Hot Chocolate" on page 52, the.... you know what, I just want to try everything! So, in lieu of listing every recipe in the book, I'll just say that these recipes sound amazing and I can't wait to try them all.
In addition to all the recipes for actual drinks, there are also detailed instructions on how to make infused liquors, simple syrup, sour mix, marshmallows, and snacks. I don't know that I could stomach the "Roasted Marrow Bones", however.
I'm planning on making the "Classic Hot Chocolate" this weekend- I'll let you know how it is!
For those interested in experimenting and researching the concept of hot alcoholic drinks, this book contains lots of ideas. It does address the basics of th more traditional drinks. But then adds a interesting concepts such as using bacon-infused bourbon.
It also has wonderful additional sections. There is a section is on bar basics such as garnishes, glassware, opening champagne, etc. Another section is on how to make many of the nonstandard ingredients such as bacon-infused bourbon, various simple syrups, etc. Further sections cover interesting related recipes such as how to make homemade marshmallows, candied bacon, Mexican wedding cakes, etc.
All in all an interesting book chocked full of ideas. It is also beautifully illustrated with many wonderful pictures. Certainly a fun book to read while sipping on a hot toddy on a winter's evening.
Unlike other books where you have to start at page one and trek through chapter after chapter to find the reward of a story told, with a book such as Winter Cocktails, a collection of drink mixes and food recipes, you get to hunt and seek out gems throughout the reading. And, as with any collection of this nature, you are compelled to try out various formulas to see if there is quality beyond the descriptions and photos of the process of the drink making. The answer is yes be it Liquid Gold, the English Christmas Punch or the Winter White Hot Chocolate. This book, won through the Good Reds website, is a certain winner whether you are mixing for two or twenty. Plus there is a collection of delicious foods to prep and devour. Bon appetit.
I got this books through a Goodreads giveaway and was so excited to see it on my doorstep today. Although I fear some off the cocktails may be a little too complicated for me, they all look and sound amazing. The author does a good job of covering the basics at the beginning of the book which is helpful. I can't wait for it to get a little colder for me to start trying out some of the recipes. I'm especially intrigued by the section about infusing Gin and Vodka and may give that a try first. I also like the idea of hot cocktails using tea.
It's starting to get cold outside and the weather is simply hideous, so I was quite happy to see this come in the mail. Absolutely loved everything about it! The recipes sound (and the ones I tried are ) delicious, the pictures are great, and I liked the fact that the authors includes recipes for little snacks and other useful information.
I'm definitely going to recommend this to anyone that would like to experiment with new cocktail recipes :)
I made the hot buttered rum for a friend and I and words escape me on how much neither of us liked it. That greasy butter mouthfeel really just says it all. What a waste of ingredients!
November 2022 Edit: was gifted a hard copy version and made the English Rose cocktail with rose-infused gin and Earl Gray tea with peppercorn simple syrup and... meh. It was ok. Not worth all the effort to infuse everything.
Honestly? Taking away another star and passing the hard copy along. Two cocktails in and not one I actually like enough to make again. Not the right book for me.
I looked over the recipes and some I'd like to try. Was kind of surprised to see butter in hot chocolate recipes though. It not only includes drink recipes (I'm guessing most of them can be made virgin by omitting the liquor), but she has some snacky things, descriptions of pantry and bar ingredients, and barware, as well as directions for things like rimming glasses.
I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
First Read Win! So happy when I found out i won this. I searched through the recipes and have already tried three of them. I just love love this book it is so amazing. My husband is in love with the Recipe that has Nutella. Thank you so much. Can't wait to try more of the recipes throughout the next few weeks.
A tantalizing array of beverages, and not as focused on "dark and heavy" drinks as much as on winter-y spices and flavors, which I appreciate as somebody who tends towards gin, white wine, and whatnot. Particularly intriguing recipes include Liquid Gold (pineapple, rum and brandy), Andes Devil (pisco and prosecco) and the Vietnamese Alexander (a Brandy Alexander with espresso notes). Yum!
This gave me hope for winter again. Literally one of the only winter things I look forward to is pawing through this book- it has taught me so many things (like almost any juice can be muddled, and pineapple is better with cayenne, and sooo many liquors are good in coffee, and almost nothing works for a sore throat like a hot toddy...)
Its a nice cocktail book focusing on the cold weather season. A great addition to any bar for when you are looking for new ideas for what to drink when it is cold outside.
