A Hearts On Fire Review --3.5 Hearts (well 3.625 to be exact--excluding Frangipani Kisses because it's a DNF)

As with most anthologies, there are stronger stories and some that just don't make the cut. I actually had to DNF only one story (which I rarely do) but it was a chore to get through. Not the style for me at all. The other six stories, however were creative and had a lot of ginger hair love. (I thank you) From fantasy to contemporary, it had a little bit of everything. I think you can tell which were my favorite of the bunch. ;) All in all, I had a good time.

Whiskey Wishes by Anna Martin - 3.5 Hearts - There is something about Anna Martin's tone that is enchanting. I was swept away in this sweet romance between a whiskey distillery worker and an artist in "Whiskey Wishes". Set in modern day Ireland, the story is told by James, the not quite out whiskey worker who comes from a big family, has a disability but doesn't hold him back from achieving his dreams and didn't think any man would ever catch his eye in his small hometown. His sister raves about the hot artist newcomer staying about the pub, Aiden. And Aiden bumps into James and kismet steps in. James tries to ignore the lust he feels for Aiden but he can't. The two fall into sweet love and learn about each other. I think the mysterious Aiden's secret came a little late in the story. It wasn't a big surprise (I actually thought he was going to be something paranormal - might've been wishful thinking) but he charmed me. As he did James. I loved this little glimpse into both mens' lives. Sweet, soft story.

Flickers by Tia Fielding - 2.75 Hearts - WTF? I can't believe I liked this but I did. Ghost! Ack! I can't stand them in fiction. This is a weird ghost story with a mix of out/gay-for-you, mystery and paranormal? Set in modern day Kentucky, landscaper Ben is in "denial" of being gay (but seems to be a self-hating gay, IMO) He prefers "straight people over the gay ones", he has a gay ghost haunting him- staring at his naked ass, making him uncomfortable. The ghost ends up having a sad story and Ben has to get to the bottom of finding out why the ghost chose him. He solves the mystery on hunky, ginger bear artist, Adrian DuBois' doorstep, or in his case barn step. Ben was not a likeable character but there was something about him that kept me reading. The author took pretty cool elements and tried to create a story but it was too short to get the full effect. We go from Ben being deep in the closet and way in denial about being gay, solving the mystery and the epilogue where he's out and engaged to Adrian. Huh? Where are the other 75 pages detailing how Ben went from one extreme to the next? The ghost mystery was different and the way the ghost stayed true vegan even after death was funny. But the huge time jump and no explanation on how the men got there was too jarring not effect my enjoyment of the entire package.

Click Your Heels Three Times by Blaine D. Arden - 2.5 Hearts - I'm torn on how to rate this, so I'm going middle of the fence. Decent enough elements but the execution fell short. Set in a fantasy or magic using alternate universe, prince Theo is serving in his country's army as a soldier. His general wants him to marry his ginger mage sin, Munkin. But the prince is already taken by leather maker Wyvern. In the sexless short, Theo is cast in a spell that felt sort of Lost-esque. The spell traps Theo on a deserted island where things aren't as they seem. The story dives in weird and when animals and food baskets and replays of past conversations became involved. The bit of suspense with Theo getting off the island was odd. Not cohesive enough to pull the overall effect. I was interested in seeing what was great about Wyvern, why the prince chose to serve for his country and there was a crumb of snark that never developed. :(

Frangipani Kisses by Liam Livings - DNF Delight - It's not that this was gay fiction rather than romance. It's not that the story is more about an older gay man's reflection on self-realization after losing his career and volunteering at a charity store. It's the weird story-telling. It was very British but yet it was boring and dry. I gave up after the first chapter. I could feel a headache start so instead of suffering, I dnf-ed. It's a rarity (for me) but I had to. Not interesting enough.

Charmed by M.J. O'Shea - 3.5 Hearts - This was cute! It was a modern fairy tale...sort of. It was a little Coyote Ugly meets The Taming of the Shrew meets Cinderella's Glass Slipper. Set in NYC, it features a double redheaded pairing - Luke, the NYU photography student was a little dreamy and romantic & Kelly - the Southern strawberry blonde bartender that rules the bar as an ice prince. The beginning totally hooked me. I got lost in middle but the ending was sweet and I remained engaged. Kelly thinks he's on top of the little world he rules. He's untouchable, everyone wants him and he doesn't want anyone...unless its just to hit and quit. And despite all of his bluster, he takes on look at Luke and falls so deep. Luke takes him around the city and slows down Kelly's hectic, slam and bam ways. it's cute. This is sex free and it shows romance doesn't have to be all about sex. Kelly did make a jerk move though. I think Luke forgave him too quickly but it's fairytale-esque so...I guess it works for them. Overall, I liked.

Torch by Kit Muellender - 4.5 Hearts - Oh wow! I was pleasantly surprised with this one. This was a full out novella, enough depth given to the main character, a slow reveal of who would be the main character's love interest and an honest to goodness fairy tale feel kind of romantic story. Told in modern day...UK (it reads like the author is from there), Jem is a doctor who is openly gay and lonely. Well not that lonely because he has the jazz club next door to keep him company. He listens through the window, has done this for years and has somehow fallen for the Thursday night's performer. He hasn't step foot inside but that voice gets him off. It calms him down from a hectic day. It soothes him.He needs it from working in a hospital with 12 hour shifts and crabby coworkers. I'm trying not to give away who is the love interest because it's not readily obvious at first read. And everyone who tries this should have to the chance to experience this rose bloom (you know, a story that starts lightly furled until its ready to open its petals) But I will say the ambience and the mood written was one of the strongest in the bunch. And this is the author's only work? Please continue to write more words. Please and thank you.

Miles To Go by B. Snow - 5 Hearts Hands down favorite of the anthology!
“There's a reason straight men call us 'cocksuckers'. I've just never understood why it's considered an insult.”

This story is not without flaws but damn was it a breath of fresh air. The reactions, I think it was the reactions of the main character that got to me the most. The story is definitely one of the stronger of the bunch and not without a more closer to unique situation. And the undercurrent of humor that was laced throughout. When you read a story that fits like a glove, you just have to crow about it. Am I right?
Redheaded architect Joe is currently married with a wife and adorable son. But his wife and childhood sweetheart, has realized her husband is gay and set up 7 different dates for him to realize he was gay too. Joe wants to go back to regular life with his only love and is very sure he's straight. His wife hires a grad student babysitter, Danny, to watch her kid while Joe goes on his dates. Oh and Danny is gay. And snarky.
"You don't mind that I'm straight?"
"Joe, my boy, you're not straight."
"Why does everyone keep saying that? What the hell am I missing?"
"I don't know, but it will be so exciting when you figure it out."

Joe goes on dating disasters and Danny helps him unwind from the horrors with an anecdote or beer or sometimes both. It's great. The writing was fine, very fine. The characters had some depth and reading the deconstruction of Joe's marriage...it kinda touched me? I dunno. I really felt it for him. He really put in a valiant effort. But he finally discovers a part of himself he's never gave wings to fly. P.S. No sex and sooooooooo not necessary.

Totally reading more of this author.

**3.5 stars for the collection as a whole**

"Whiskey Wishes" by Anna Martin- 3.5 stars
What a sweet short! It is really hard to create chemistry and romance in a story of this length, but Anna Martin does it. I loved the setting (Irish countryside) and the sweet chemistry between the two MCs. Very light on the sex, but a cute story overall. I enjoyed this one.

"Flickers" by Tia Fielding- 2.5 stars
I liked the idea behind this story but the MC and I never meshed. Ben was a sort of unlikable characters, with his hate-on for flamboyant gay men while he is okay with more burly gay men. I guess Ben was sort of in the closet but his disdain for stereotypical gay men rubbed me the wrong way. The concept of the story had me hooked but I was scrunching my nose in annoyance a lot of the time.

"Click Your Heels Three Times" by Blaine D. Arden- 3 stars
A creative, cute, sex-free fantasy story. If magic and high fantasy kings and lords are your thing, you'll enjoy this one. A little overreaching for a story of this length, I still liked the imagination behind this short.

Frangipani Kisses" by Liam Livings- 2 stars
I should probably give this fewer stars because I DNFed this, which is terrible considering it is only about 30 pages long. This was rough for me. Super British, not really a romance, dated feeling, just not my taste at all.

"Charmed" by M.J. O'Shea- 4 stars
Really cute story about a jaded NYC bartender feeling an undeniable spark with a hipster, ginger boy. Sweet and sex-free, this was romantic and took place in my neck of the woods. I would have loved to read about this in novel-format but I think it worked well as a short. Very nice.

"Torch" by Kit Mullender- 5 stars
Wow, who is this author and why doesn't she write more! This was the best story in the collection thus far and I couldn't take my eyes off of it. I loved everything about it, from the doctor plot-line (YES!) to the sexual tension to the music. Great atmosphere- I could practically feel the heat and sweat. It was just awesome overall and worth the price of the collection just for this one story.

"Miles To Go" by B. Snow- 4.5 stars
Jackpot! I looove a GFY story and this was a cute one! I liked the slow buildup and the sexual tension. It was going to be a strong 5 stars except for the aborted sex scene at the end. Gah! What I wouldn't pay for 30 more erotic pages with those two. Excellent work, B. Snow!

Collectively, give or take, 2.5 stars

Some works, some not really. An eye-opener to some new-to-me-author's style.

-----added on Aug 14th-----

My favorites were Flickers by Tia Fielding and Torch by Kit Mullender. The first was a hit and run victim turned ghost who ended up playing matchmaker to a pair of bear in quiet Kentucky area. A mix of humor and touching tale. The second was a hospital war between a resident and a head of pharmacy mixed with the doctor's fixation over a singer from a pub near his flat. Sultry story indeed.

Whiskey Wishes by Anna Martin was an Irish tale of a disabled distillery guy met with a painter. I've got soft spot for anything Irish, so this one somehow worked for me.

Miles To Go by B. Snow told about a not so gay guy on the verge of got divorced by his wife with a snarky younger babysitter. Point for the adorable and cute little son, Ethan.

The rest were: Charmed by B. Snow was an icy southern bartender tale in New York. A bit felt like cinderfella, but instead of shoes the love interest left behind... ratty flip-flops?

Frangipani Kisses by Liam Livings... Ha! This one hit too close to home. ^^ A pair of established couple focusing on John who filled his daily helping in charity cause after being made redundant from an accounting firm in London. He ended up accidentaly starting cakes business. A sweet and British tale with yumminess overload (seriously, I gained weight from just reading about all those cakes.

Click Your Heels Three Times by Blaine D. Arden was fantasy tale of a Royal Prince being held and hexed for refusing to marry the General's offspring. Huh, it sounded more interesting than the way I read it...

Review:
Whiskey Wishes: This was a cute story about small town living and finding true love in unlikely places. The main hurdle was Jamie’s coming out, because the two fell for one another on sight. It was fairly unremarkable, but all the Irish flavor was nice. 3 of 5 stars.
Flickers: I loved this story. It was funny and sweet, and a little sad. I though the premise interesting and was so pleased with the ending: an epilogue for a short story! 4.5 of 5 stars
Charmed: I loved this story all the way up to the end. It was going and going and going – great – super high sexual tension, sweet love story, funny dialog – then pow – it ended and frankly - I was disappointed. 3.5 of 5 stars
Click Your Heels:
This was the worst of the lot, very confusing, with writing that was hard to follow. 2 of 5 stars
Franipani Kisses:
This was a nice story, not really a romance, but a fairly sweet story of a gay man finding “himself”. 3 of 5 stars
Torch: I loved this story. It was erotic and emotional, a little funny and sweet. For a short story it packed quite the punch. I will be looking for this author in the future. 5 of 5 stars
Miles to Go:
This was my favorite of the lot. Super sweet. A man finally realizing his true sexuality with the help of a younger, very “out” gay babysitter. It was tender, hot and funny all at the same time. Definitely an author to follow. 5 of 5 stars
Overall Impression:

4 stars – I really liked it

Isn’t that juts the prettiest cover? *sigh* Got my interest, and I am not usually into covers that much. Now if he were actually reading these bedtime stories to me . . . *blurring to dream sequence*

Whiskey Wishes by Anna Martin
*hearing a lovely Irish lilt* Two guys come out of the closet and find love and acceptance in a small town outside Dublin - Kilbeggan, Ireland. Lovely story.

Flickers by Tia Fielding
*husky Kentucky drawl* A ghost playing match maker? Well in a roundabout way. Mostly he just wanted to get back to the only “home” he ever knew.

Click Your Heels Three Times by Blaine D. Arden
*proper aristocratic English* Magic and spells abound in this thrilling story of betrayal overcome by love.

Frangipani Kisses by Liam Livings
*shades of Graham Norton whisper in my ear* And yes, this read like Graham Norton talks – fast and kind of all over the place. This is a story about losing one’s job and finding the world. A rather inspiring story really.

Charmed by MJ O’Shea
*New York rush* Can a jaded, one-night-only type of guy find his soul mate and love at first sight? Trying to maintain his tough guy image while being romanced is impossible and scary as hell. A lovely, sweet romance. *sigh*

Torch by Kit Mullender
*rusty, bluesy voice* Can one fall in love with just a voice? Maybe. But it is so much better when one finds that voice attached to a surly body one has known for years. A nicely surreal story.

Miles To Go by B. Snow
*west coast with a hint of Valley Girl*
What do you do when your wife accuses you of being gay, leaves, and threatens divorce if you don’t start dating some guys? Fall for the babysitter, of course. Some interesting twists to this one.

*jerks awake* Oh sorry! Er – um – where was I? Oh yes, lovely cover, to go with some equally lovely stories. Each of these were wonderful stories about the magic of love. *sigh* I thoroughly enjoyed every one. They were well written with satisfying endings. Anyone of them would make a wonderful bedtime story to fall asleep with. Sweet dreams.

FRANGIPANI KISSES by Liam Livings

My Rating: 4 of 4 Stars
(Based on the Short&Light Read Category)

After John loses his accounting job in an outsourcing logistics company, the novelty of not having to get up early every day soon wore off. Looking for work was an exercise in futility. To feel busy, he found himself volunteering in a cancer charity shop and soon found friends he could spend time with and who loved to eat his cakes. Keith, his long time partner and best friend, continued to be supportive and John loved him for it. But John needed to feel useful. He needed to earn. When the charity shop was lined up for closing, it was Keith who steered him to the right direction: use his accountancy and baking skills to advantage.

This is an inspiring story to read. It is not a formulaic romance, neither is it erotica. It is a story of how two gay men, an established couple, could rely on the other and be the support each one needs. This is the story of how John finally found himself and got the happily ever after for both his relationship and his career. All he needed to do was find that right path to take him there.

As per the style of Livings, Frangipani focuses on the day to day lives of characters who just happened to be gay, dusted with the element of romance. There is a whole lot of humor going on especially with the author playing around with some of the techie terms used by the older characters in reference to multi media: Ipaps. It is my new favorite word :D He talks about life and how it can be dealt with should it go against all expectations. He talks about friendships and how it can be solidified over a cup of tea and a serving of cake and macaroons. What really got me hooked was the ease of the flow of the story and how it did make me feel good and relaxed enough to sleep.

If I have to be disappointed over one thing, it would be because no recipes were shared, especially for the lemon drizzle sandwich cake. Otherwise, this is a sweet, dreamy story meant to be read while in bed. It is relaxing, inspiring and tempting to the senses.

In short, this is a bedtime story, just as promised.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Updated Review!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After reading Frangipani Wishes from this anthology, it was impossible not to get tempted to continue on reading more stories that were surely designed to be the perfect read just before bedtime. Here is the rest of the eARC review for this amazing anthology.
WHISKEY WISHES by Anna Martin
Jim lives in Kilbeggan, a small town in Ireland with a whiskey distillery, but not by choice. He had left the small town to the greener citified pastures of Dublin but recession forced him back. Fortunately, the distillery not only offered him a job, he found that despite all, he loved said job. His only problem: being gay was not that accepted by small town mentality, and that sort of pushed him back into the limited closet.
Aiden is an artist and just started living in the room above the pub where Jim's sister, Brigitte, worked. By description, he was one dreamy looking guy and being an artist, this romanticized his image somewhat. When Aiden first bumps into Jim, well the sparks flew, somewhat. The only problem is, Jim liked him too.
But so did Brigitte.
The hide and seek that went on in this story only increased the chemistry-like reaction between the two men. As their romance and relationship developed, Aiden found himself staying with Jim more and more until they finally just moved in together.
The problem was Brigitte. And the rest of Jim's family.
FLICKERS by Tia Fielding
Benjamin was in denial. He did not really want to admit he was gay for whatever personal reasons he had. He denied liking the looks sent his way by other men, its true, but not really admitting it verbally. He did mind getting looks and being stared at by a ghost. Standing over his bedside.
Benjamin finally decides to take the bull, err ghost, by its horns, hmmm doesn't sound right. Anyways, he takes matters into his own hands and with the assistance of said ghost flickering lights and all, he searches the world wide web for a death. When the answer was finally found, it was not something Benjamin expected. Neither did he expect to find his own happiness at the end of the day, in the arms of a man.
CLICK YOUR HEELS THREE TIMES by Blaine D. Arden
A fairy tale story of a prince and his lover separated by angst and drama. When Prince Theo continued to deny General West's need to advance his political influence and personal power through Royal family membership, never did he think that the man the Queen trusted as a friend and confidante be the same to betray them. Separated through dark magic, he needed to escape the alien forest world he was sent to. He not only needed to get back into Wystan's arms, but he needed to knock a bit of sense into that General.
What was it his mother said about clicking his heels?
CHARMED by MJ O’Shea
Kelly was the bar Cosmic's head bartender. He was not only reliable and trusted by the management to care for the clients and to make sure that no cheating was done under the table, he was also known not to fool around. When and if he did, he took it out from the bar and any bartender under him knew better to bring boyfriends in. But Kelly wanted a relationship. He was tired of the game, even if his work dumped him in the middle of all the goings on. He wanted the Cosmic hit that could only be read in fairy tale romances. Never thought he would get hit by Cupid's arrow right in the middle of his heart. Luke was not only unexpected, he was everything Kelly hoped to have for a future but fought so hard to deny.
TORCH by Kit Mullender
Jem was a doctor and he worked hard. Sometimes too hard. Getting home Thursday nights was his one consolation of the week, when all he needed to do was open his window and listen to the mesmerizing sound of a Jazz singer singing his heart out with only a piano to accompany him. He needed that voice, his work was great but complications from Elias Constantine, the hospital's head pharmacist, was not making things easier. Sure, the guy was attractive but once he opened his mouth or eyed Jem with laser beams... no. Just. No. That is, until Jem and friends from work decide to go to the same Jazz bar by his apartment and the voice through the window sits on a stool and starts singing. Finally, he has a face to go with the voice.
MILES TO GO by B. Snow
Joe's life was crumbling. His wife had left him after telling him that he was gay. He. Was. Not. Gay! Hey, she was the only one he ever loved and they had a beautiful and endearing son together. To prove he was straight as straight can be, Joe agrees to a stupid deal: go on a man date set up by his wife or divorce. He chose to go the dating way but first he needs a sitter. When Danny walks in through the door, there were no insta-lust-sparks going on. Joe was too deep into his own troubles. As date after date end in complete fiasco, Joe found himself opening up to his dynamic sitter. And that, as they say, was when the fun began. But not the fun you are thinking, so get that mind out of the gutter peeps!
Each of these stories are as different as different could be, but they all have one thing in common: a dream-like feel that is both comforting and exciting at the same time. These stories are not meant to send one to erotic land, but sends them off to a dreamy state of romantic googiness. Not once did I find myself flipping through one story to skim or to skip over. Each one had its own beautiful, and sometimes, mesmerizing, tale to tell. All of which are great reads to take to bed.
4 stars. Review copy provided by one of the authors
Anthologies are hard to review. Sometimes they are full of fun stories set around a certain theme. Sometimes there is only one or two stories you really like. While I found Bedtime Stories to be a well collected and edited anthology. Some of the stories I liked better than the others. I’m not going to review every story individually, but look at the overall quality of the anthology.
This anthology contains stories that are mostly contemporary with two odd ducks that are fantasy and paranormal romance, which makes a nice change of pace. As you may have guessed from the title, this anthology has that feel of bedtime stories, though not the ones you’d read to kids. For a lack of a better description, it has a dream-like quality that is not quite fairytale. You still following me?
The themes range from “gay for you” to ordinary men meet and opposites attract. The stories are set in different countries (and world for Ms. Arden). It is a nice mix that blends well in this anthology. It’s an anthology that has a bit for everyone, but the stories are not so much that same that it gets boring after reading two or three stories.
A Joyfully Jay review.
4 stars
I was not sure what to expect from Bedtime Stories, but when I saw the list of authors, I knew I had to read it. The best way that I could describe it would be to say that these are the perfect stories to read just before bed. Suitable in length, with simple plots and themes, these stories will encourage sweet dreams.
As far as anthologies go, this one was good. I have always been a fan of short stories and the good ones from Bedtime Stories will appear on my late night re-read list in the future.
I read Charmed by M.J. O’Shea, part of the Bedtime Stories anthology. It is exactly as advertised, a sweet story that left me ready for a night of good dreams. It is the unlikely juxtaposition of Kelly, king of the one-night stands, and Luke, hard-working art student. Luke wins Kelly over to the light side by an unusual courtship, including a visit to his favorite garden, complete with cat. It put a smile on my face and helped relieve some stress from a too-busy week for me. Truly an excellent way to unwind!
Quick Thoughts on Anna Martin’s Whiskey Wishes
Now, this one’s real good. I wished it was a bit longer and I just loved the melancholic vibe of the story. I don’t know what I’ve read this only just this year when I had it sitting on my reader for the longest time now. Jim and Aiden are just perfect for each other. I wouldn’t mind reading a full novel out of their storyline. Just wonderful! Thank you Anna for this!
