The Ghost Bird #9

The Healing Power of Sugar

Rate this book
From USA TODAY Bestselling Author, C. L. Stone, read The Healing Power of Sugar, the ninth book in The Academy Ghost Bird Series.

It’s been a week since Sang has attended any classes at Ashley Waters, and since then, everything has changed. Her school schedule has been turned upside down, and now, thanks to her absences, the school counselor, Ms. Wright, has suspended her. The fear of school officials getting further involved and looking to contact her parents has Sang and the boys forced into their best behavior. It seems that the once perfect student, Sang Sorenson, is now one of the school’s worst, and without explanation, because she needs to keep her lips tightly sealed. Academy secrets are becoming hazardous to keep.

The more that Kota, Victor, Silas, Nathan, Gabriel, Luke and North try to protect her, the more inevitable her downfall seems to be. They do their best to make sure Sang stays in school and when she returns to classes, try to help her get back on the straight and narrow—she can’t afford to screw up anymore.

But then fate deals out a setback that cripples the whole team, and they need to make a move, it turns into a risky one. There’s no way to predict the outcome. If they fail, the boys may lose the job they were sent to do, and worse, they may even lose Sang.

Everything gets more difficult when it’s revealed there might be a traitor amidst the group. Desperate to fix things, Sang needs to stop the group from spilling secrets and find out the truth.

And why all fingers seem to be pointing to Luke.

First of all...

I came out of my dungeon to talk about this book. Once again, I read it all in one day and I regret nothing. This series can pull any fangirl out of exile, even if it is just to rant about how nOTHING EVER FUCKING HAPPENS IN THIS SERIES.

This was Luke's book and I'm so glad that we got to spend a little bit more time with him. I always thought that his character was terribly underdeveloped, outshined by his sexy brother and all of the other charismatic fellas in the group. But he is finally able to shine a bit more in this one. Luke was able to connect with Sang on a deeper level and I loved their interactions in this book.

And I have to say, this is not one of the ones in the series where literally nothing happens. It has some plot development. Volto comes back in new and interesting ways. There are some definite threats that are worrying the group and Sang is not completely useless. I desperately wish that the author would give her more to do though. In Scarab Beetle, Kayli is actively useful. She pickpockets and is clever and is able to contribute to their assignments in bigger ways. Sang just seems to be observant and waits for things to happen. She wants direction but she is so damn passive that it is a little painful to read her story.

But I still read this series. I am in there with this until the end. So let's talk about theories.

Sometimes I am really ashamed to be reading these books. It is the novel version of a reverse harem anime. All those men in love with helpless little Sang. Have you ever seen Brother's Conflict? That's what this is.

Although, I really don't think that 12 guys would work in this at all. Nine is hard enough to swallow as is. But it is unbelievably cute and I want the best for these characters. All of them are so wonderfully and terribly damaged and they need something to let them heal. Maybe Sang can do that for them. Maybe the skunk can help.

I cannot bring myself to rate this more than 3 stars. It's not great literature and nothing really happens. This is a dirty secret. This is the book that you pass around your friends and everybody giggles about it instead of actually discussing it. It's just cute and playful and silly. But so addictive.

Do not start this series. It will ruin your life.

Ok, What is the DEAL!?
This is book NINE!
What happened in this book? Nothing, I tell you!
Following the time span of our author- she has written 9 books in the series that have taken place over approx. 6 months for these characters. If we are waiting for Sang to "grow-up" to get freaky with all her boyfriends- it will be on book 58 and I will be about 95 years old. The math doesn't work.
I appreciate her being "realistic" (hahaha- that is so funny because NOTHING else about this series is) by not making Sang into a different person and have her get over all of her hang-ups in a few short months... but we need to get this party started!

When will she be in the Academy?
Who's gonna pop the cherry?
PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD-GET BUSY WITH MR BLACKBOURNE!
Who is Volto.... and more importantly- WHO GIVES A FUCK ABOUT VOLTO?

Rants of a 30 year old woman who shouldn't be obsessed with these books. Thanks for listening.

Honestly... I just want to curl up in a ball and cry until the next book is out. Yep, this series has officially made it where I'm clinically depressed unless I'm reading it. <3 (Hidden Heart)... sorry, couldn't help myself, but come on you can't tell me you didn't see that coming.

Let's talk about how nothing happened in this installment of the Ghost Bird series. No, seriously, nothing happened. Sang went on a date with Luke. Sang went to a neighbourhood Thanksgiving. Sang went Black Friday shopping. Sang got sick. This series moves at a snail's pace, except I think a snail might be faster.

This was Luke's book, except, much like Gabriel's book, there wasn't a lot of Luke with Sang, it was mostly Sang fretting over Luke's behaviour while he did a lot of behind the scenes sleuthing. They finally shared a kiss, so the only two left are Kota (I'm sure he'll get his next book) and Blackbourne.

Sang hasn't changed, except now her paranoia has been cranked up because of 'the plan.' Every time one of the guys kisses her or is affectionate, she has a mini panic attack and feels uncomfortable. Duh, Sang, if they're all clued into the plan except Kota, you shouldn't be ashamed that you're showing affection to them. That's what this whole bullshit series is about, after all. And, of course, when they go Black Friday shopping, Saint Sang thinks of getting presents for her awful sister and step-mother, because she's such a good person. Gag. She has another few bouts of jealousy again, mostly involving a girl who wrote her number on Luke's arm (and I think he kept it there to make Sang jealous), and a little five year old girl who wanted to hug Dr. (lol) Green. Other than that, she's still useless and helpless.

The guys. They're the same. North surprised me with some logic, but then followed it up with shocking Nathan like he did Silas a few books ago, spying on Sang with the cameras again (he's the biggest offender next to Kota), and yelling at Luke every time they were in the same room together.

I am still firmly #TeamVolto. Sang and the Academy boys want to believe he's insane or on the outside looking in, but as someone who is looking through Sang's eyes, he's right. Sang is too emotionally immature to be in a relationship with nine guys. Just look at how she is now! Three months and she can't brush her teeth, sleep, attend classes, or go anywhere without one of her brother husbands around. If a girl approaches her, even a little six year old, she seizes up and needs to be saved by one of her guys. Hell, I swear that she seemed to try and cling to Volto, who I'm sure is in love with her, just because he has a penis. Or, according to the epilogue, Volto might be a girl. Hah, nice try, Stone. Wil is obviously Volto, and no amount of misdirection is going to dissuade me.

I was trying to be good this year and avoided reading any Ghost Bird books so I could focus on books that didn't suck my soul out, but I couldn't focus today and ended up reading this mindless fluff.

A good book to add into the series but i'm a tad disappointed. With this book being about Luke, there was no surprise for the anticipation, but unfortunately, for this reader, it fell a little short.
That being said, it is still good and worth a recommend.
enjoy.

ARC

The Healing Power of Sugar begins with Sang and the gang getting ready for Thanksgiving and going back to school. Things haven't been easy for them, and when Luke starts acting weird Sang isn't sure good things are happening. Sang is the one that decides she must talk to Luke to figure out what's going on with him. But when other things start happening it ends up not at all turning out how she thought it would. The gang must try to come together fix the mess they are in before it is too late.

This is the 9th book in the series and it was awesome! I love the fact that everyone knows about how to make them stay together, well everyone but a few, and Sang is just trying to figure out what she wants, and how to make it work for all of them. This book really brought out the difficulties they will all have to deal with if they stay together, but it also showed how it would be for Sang if they split up.

This was a great addition to the series, and I can not wait to read more now!

Volto starts leaving more masks around just as Luke starts acting strange. Luke is a prankster, but could he be Volto? Sang is tasked with spending more time with Luke to find out what is going on. Her time with him leads to an interesting new pet and some more kissing. Things at school are still getting crazier with Principal Hendricks and McCoy trying to figure out what the Academy boys are up to and vice versa. In the end, it is Volto who suggests what part of their plan might be.

I love all the boys from the Academy, but it was fun to get to know Luke better in this book. We still need to know more about what Principal Hendricks is up to, and the mystery involving Volto continues. A lot seemed to happen in this book, but again, little progress was made in the big picture.
It seems like Sang might have one more guy on board with "the plan", which is good since her introduction to the Academy is getting closer. I'm really looking forward to that part!

Angstsy

I am really not sure an adult should leave reviews in these books! 😂 I say that with the utmost respect, but as someone far older than the characters in these pages / I kinda want to smack them. Then again, I AM reading them, and have obviously reached book 9.... so take my words how you will. There is an addictive quality here I can’t deny.

I want to cry.

This series is one of the most unique I've ever come across with it's gripping story full of twists and mystery as well as its complexity of characters.

9 books in, and I'm starting to waver, as the fear goes with a series as drawn out as this.

The same questions are being asked over and over. The plot isn't being advanced enough to make it interesting.

Essentially, no progress has been actually made in this book. Just more questions and new people, which is all fine but I feel in bringing in more people, something could have came out of to further the storyline, to add another piece.
Instead, I felt it got lost and I am so disappointed.

I appreciate the time taken to develop the group and the whole adaptation to the situation that they hope to put into place. But I felt that there were some scenes that got dragged out and didn't actually contribute a whole lot.

I HATE TO even put this down here but Sang....is developing almost too slowly for me. I like how realistic it all seems considering what she has been through....but her constant worry and insecurity is grating on me more than I care to admit.

It saddens me to think that, having loved these books from the beginning. I feel loyalty to the story because I genuinely adore the plot and the concepts, not to mention all of the guys! I would miss them so much if I felt I was losing complete interest in the way the story is heading. Which could be ultimately no where for a while. But I am hanging in here, hoping that more will happen, and I'll let the next book decide if I can stand to continue it.

:( :( :( :( :(

I really don't know where these books are going but in my head it all leads to to one big very not PG predicament. I have no idea how does she plan to stay in YA section for the next 11 books. Things are still very slow. And is taking forever to get to all the first kisses (well all nine of them) but if Sang is not thinking of them everybody else is.

She is still a child about her behavior. Thinks and acts like my 7 years old and shaves her finger in her mouth every time she is uncomfortable. Not much growth development in her.

I love the series because it goes in details about everyday live. Does not rush from one time to next. All the boys are well developed and stand out on their own. They are all lovable but there are still a lot of mystery and treats to keep each book busy with action.

The bad side ..... It will take years for the end of the series. And I don't like to wait. But who would think that after 9 books I would be hooked as if it was the first one.

Now I wait..... and wait......and wait some more.....

I don't usual write reviews for books unless they made me feel either intense hatred or pleasure. For this book I'm going to have to say I didn't feel it at all.

I just read in another review that there's meant to be 20 books from the series!!!!!!!! 20!? Just wow.

I'm already fed up with this. Who is volto? The whole issue with Mr. Hendrix needs to be concluded asap. I fell in love with the first 6 books. Honestly, i read them all in a week. But after a while it just got on my nerves. I know Sang's background but could the author not make her so clueless to somethings? She makes me want to rip my hair out sometimes.

I'm going to stop here cuz I don't have time to write more at the moment. I still like the story line and i will continue reading to find out how it all ends but I'm taking a break from the series for now.

I haven't reviewed the previous 8 books in this series. I remember liking the first book and the second one... and then I got caught in this series because author obviously has a good knack for creating more questons and never really answering them. It's meant to keep me as a reader interested... but...
I have to say, the 9th book dragged and didn't have anything significant happening. I was frustrated that we still didn't find out who Volto is and to get this Mr Hendricks drama bagged. It's just dragging and getting a bit boring.
There's meant to be 20 books in this series... I have feeling I won't get any answers until the 20th book and I'm just not so sure anymore I want to keep reading those.. there's only so long my attention can be kept by riding the same issue.

Oh, I LOVED getting to know Luke in this one! I was a little worried with where Sang's thought process was going in regards to him, but everything was so worth it. I'm looking forward to seeing how Luke's involvement in the plan will help. What he was talking about doing at the end sounded PERFECT. Love. Him.

I think next up is Kota? He's been growing on me, so I'm interested to see where he stands at the end of the next book. And it looks like they're finally going to address Sang's fear of showers, which I've been waiting for. Can First Kiss come quick??? I'm already having Ghost Bird withdrawals!

Original review: I had a more difficult time getting into this book. I kept putting it down, then didn't pick it up for weeks at a time. Then suddenly last night, I just got sucked back in and finished it in a few hours. I always enjoy the story and of course I love the characters so I don't know what it was about the beginning that was slow for me.

Reread September: Another great book with a lot more romance development. I liked getting more of Luke because he is just so chill and fun.

I expected more from this book so I'm a little disappointed even if I loved the first chapter, I felt like the following ones weren't as good. I want Sang to be stronger and that she stops being manipulated so easily by other people. I'm still looking forward to the next book.

Luke!!!! It Kinda sucks that everytime we get a guy that the book is focused on like they're just in deep shit. Like Victor had his shit with his maid, silas with his brother, and Gabriel with his self-esteem issues and running around with McCoy. Now Luke is hella fishy. He be sneaking around and shit. I understand why Luke lied and said the masks was his doing but he shouldn't have said anything. Like he was protecting them and stuff but like in the end of the day it still happened so by him taking the blame didn't change the outcome it just changed their perspective and who they should've been concentrating on. And they could've been trying to pay attention more to Volot who has come back then to Luke who didn't do shit. The thanksgiving scene was so sweet. It was great seeing sang with little kids. We got to see her coming out of her shell more. This book also made me want a skunk I searched up pet skunk videos and they're so cute i want one so bad. I want more Sprinkles in the next books we didn't get to see much of it during this book. Bruh but volto be fucking crazy. I think its will. And if its not him who else could it be ya know? Could be one of sangs family members she doesn't know about?

It's kind of crazy to come back to this series from when I first started reading it like eight years ago.
I base the four stars off of that mindset. I probably would have given it a three if I was reading this series with fresh eyes this year.

That being said, this book was focused on Luke and had a lot more mystery and doubt to it than I expected! I was wondering how the book title was going to tie into the book but it's funny it's just an off hand thing at the very end of the book lol. Still, I think this book actually had a lot of story progression than a lot of the other books in this series.

Sang is a step away from being introduced to the Academy. Can't wait to see how that turns out. Along with her trying to navigate her feelings about this plan Mr. Blackbourne has proposed to keep the group together, it seems like she's finally willing to give it a try and not be so wishy washy about it.

I wonder who the next book is going to be about... I want it to be Owen so badly lmao.
