My first six novels, written under the name Lynn Armistead McKee, were historical fiction set in Florida about 2,000 years ago. Now writing as Lynn Sholes, I have recently changed genres and I am co-writing a 3-book thriller series(Cotten Stone Mysteries) with Joe Moore. The first, THE GRAIL CONSPIRACY, was released in September 2005 as part of Llewellyn Publications launch of their new fiction imprint, Midnight Ink. THE LAST SECRET is scheduled for fall of 2006, followed by the third book, INDIGO RUBY to be released in the fall of 2007.

I bought this book when the cover promoted it as "In the tradition of Clan of the Cave Bear". If it was half as good as that book I knew I'd like it-and I did. Armistead did a tremendous job building the environment of an ancient tribal culture living on an island. She captured the innocence and coming of age of a young woman without making the character out to be a complete idiot. The slow build of the romance plot as well as where Mi-sa will land in the rank of the tribe was really well executed.

This book is a very well written book that touches on the lives of the native Americans in Florida. The descriptors are incredible. The stars are crystal clear.

I felt for the young girl and was so proud at the end. So, when the last page came and the words flowed, I smiled. What an ending!

Want a good book about the native Americans? I highly recommend this book!

I found this book in an independent bookstore with a prehistoric fiction section. I enjoy this genre, especially books with strong female characters like this one.

Mi-sa, the daughter of the shaman, is born the same night a meteor streaks through the sky. But the people, a tribe living in the an ancient Everglades, see her birth as a bad omen. When she shows signs of having a shaman's gift of touching the spirits, reserved for men, her people begin to fear her.

The author makes use of her research in the archaeology of the local indigenous people to bring this world to life. I felt for Mi-sa and the courage and endurance it took to survive her situation. The village is filled with compelling characters, though at times I found it hard to tell whose thoughts and point of view I was reading.

Overall I would recommend it, and I would like to read more books in the series.
