No one likes Vader. Now no one likes Lando. 'But I am on your side,' says Lando. 'You are not on our side!' Leia says. 'You are slime!' Is Lando really slime? Only time will tell.
Star Wars for the next generation! Scholastic has been bringing out a lot of different books from Lego Star Wars, Star Wars activity books and now Star Wars Phonics. I was not sure what to expect when getting this boxed set but it far, far exceeded my expectations.
The Books are: Book 1 - Meet Anakin - short a Book 2 - Friends to the End - short e Book 3 - Jar Jar's Trip - short i Book 4 - Here Come the Ewoks - short o Book 5 - How to Be a Jedi - short u Book 6 - Chase on Endor - long a Book 7 - Meet Han Solo - long e Book 8 - Hide Out - long i Book 9 - Here Come the Clones - long o Book 10Use the Force, Luke! - long u Workbook 1 - Short Vowel Sounds Workbook 2 - Long Vowel Sounds
With a focus of between 5 and 12 key words per book, with repetitions, these books give a lot of practice and will help develop reading skills. Most of the books have full color photo screen shots from the movies on every page and a small white bar on the bottom of the page for the text in a nice large font. The key words for the book are bold print to make them stick out. It was fun just reading through the books and going down memory lane of the movies even as an adult. There is a stronger focus on the original three movies which is awesome.
This box set will be a great tool for parents helping their kids, or in the classroom.

A great set of books to help a young Star Wars fan learn to read. Both my six and four year old love them, and I think the emphasis on the sounds (one sound per book, with each of the words containing that sound in bold text) is actually helping them.
The girls thoroughly enjoyed these and they have a few less common phonics words, like slime. The workbooks are a bit advanced at the moment and we missed two of the books because the library copy isn’t complete anymore. I think I may buy us our own set.
This is a set of books to help get either starting readers or those who are having difficulty with reading to understand the vowel sounds. The books are formatted so that each teaches one sound and the words using that sound are in bold print. The characters are of course familiar to any Star Wars fan. This increases the usefulness of the books because that means any little SW fan is going to want to read these. Besides the ten story books there are also two workbooks but I haven't looked at them so can't comment on them.
Although I cannot give any individual book more than 3 stars, I am giving the set 4* as it is a clever idea and gets kids who are interested in Star Wars to beg to do some reading. My daughter loves SWs and loves reading but sometimes gets exasperated by some "early reader" books with more challenging words in them. This set was just enough of a challenge without overwhelming her and yet keeping her going. Fun, educational, nice set.
Daniel got these books in kindergarten and read them all summer afterwards. He said they were interesting and are very easy books to read now that he is in second grade. My daughter Penelope is in preschool and likes to have these books read to her. Soon she’ll be reading them herself!
This was probably my favorite in the boxed set. I enjoyed the exploration of the differences between Han and Chewie yet the conclusion that they can still be best friends. This one came at an important moment for my daughter so worked well. Again simple and easy but attractive for her early reading skills.
For an early reading book, this got my child enthused about reading to me, excited to learn the new words and she now knows how to read force, pod racing and more! For me, it was an ok book with not a lot of story but didn't give away plot lines which a lot of Star Wars books manage to do!
My least favorite in the set - and I don't usually mind Jar Jar too much! Dark pictures making them almost pointless, lots of next level up words which made it challenging but not enjoyable!
