This very nearly hit the DNF brick wall. The major problem is in the worldbuilding—a jumbled hodgepodge with little rhyme or reason. The central feature of the mythology is "Vikings", though not in any recognizable form. Here, the Vikings are supposedly all demigods, descendants of blah blah blah. I'm boring myself trying to relate it here.
The problem with the blah blah isn't so much that it's all weirdness. There are a lot of myths to chose from in our past so you can probably justify practically anything. The problem is that this particular brand of blah blah was so very, very shallow. I feel like I got dumber about mythology reading this as things were just thrown around for no purpose beyond "words".
And the worst part of the world building is the over-utilization of Vikings as supernatural pillagers, conquerors, and rapists. Since the lead is a female entering the edges of the weird, it felt like she was under near constant threat of abduction and rape. And that's largely because she was. I found that very wearing, particularly in the last third of the book. It didn't help that Liam kept swanning in and out of her orbit (leaving her vulnerable all the time). I completely didn't appreciate that.
The book would have benefited greatly had the secondary characters had some flesh on the bones, but they really didn't. From the firmly friendzoned Justin to the party-smarty Allison, they seemed more like ad-libbed content than actual presences in Callie's life. ______ A boy to mess with the romantic relationship. ______ A girl who pushes more risk-taking. ______ A creepy ex-boyfriend with zero boundaries and cognitive disability.
So what kept me going? Well, I liked Callie. And Liam didn't suck. I didn't care for the insta-love, but I didn't completely hate it, either—mostly because I liked them both and they fit very well together. Their relationship worked for me and I enjoyed that Liam brought out the best in Callie and that she could (and did) assert herself in helpful and interesting ways.
And yes, that's a slim reed upon with to hang the story. Like I said, I nearly DNF'd with prejudice at the three fourths mark or so. The ending pulled it up, but not so much that I can justify upping it to even three stars.
This was a pretty good read, and one that was hard to rate. It was pretty good, but it wasn’t amazing, but it wasn’t horrible either. It was a quick read that I enjoyed, with an interesting plot and a romance story that kept me turning pages. This is a paranormal romance, and the paranormal aspect of things was done very well.
We have the main character Callie who I really liked. She was someone who didn’t want to stand idle while everything was going on around her. Even though she was out of her depth she wanted to help, and held strong for her friends and family. As well as that she was a swimmer, and I always like seeing women doing sports in novels for some reason. Maybe because it doesn’t happen too much. She develops a bit in this novel, from someone who is bullied at school and keeps their head down to someone more confident, fiery and willing to do what it takes.
Liam was a nice love interest, but I didn’t feel much for him as a character. In fact, I wasn’t too interested in the Hales. They were cool and all, but I much preferred Callie’s best friend, Justin. He was such a nice guy! Slow, patient and always looking out for his best mate. I wouldn’t have minded a friend like him ;)
As for the plot, there is a bit of Greek and Norse mythology in there. The Stians were a new type of villain for me. They were monsters who looked like people and claimed women, destroying them to harm their Guardians. They formed a sort of clan with which they hope to take over the world. It was up to the Hales and other Guardians (demigods) to stop that from happening. I feel like Julie explained the situation very well and gave us everything we’d need to know to understand, which was good.
To me the ending felt a little bit rushed, and I didn’t completely understand what went done at the final battle, but afterwards we get a kind of ‘debriefing’ of sorts and that was helpful. Overall a pretty good book, and I will hopefully be reading the next one in the series when it’s published.
I don't know if you guys know this about me but here it is. I hate alpha males. Just straight up, absolutely hate them. This is why I don't read too many romances. This is why I haven't read Darkfever, despite 90% of my friends loving it.
I hate alpha males.
You know what else I hate? I hate love triangles, instalove, the idea of virginity, and the idea of friend-zoning.
Let's just say, I hate a lot of things. I'm a hateful person, I guess, but I don't feel bad about it.
I point all of these things out because not only does this book have them all, it takes them all and then pushes them to the nth degree.
Callie Ingram is our main character. She used to date Kirk, who's a popular dickbag, and they broke up because Callie didn't want to have sex yet. Which, for the record, is--as someone who waited until marriage to have sex--is totally cool. This is not what I have a problem with.
But then two hot brothers come and live next door to her. One is a social butterfly, we don't care about him. The other is Liam, who is our resident love interest. He doesn't like anyone but Callie, because of course he doesn't. He's got major anger management problems, threatens to punch people a lot, and takes a keen interest in defending Callie despite her protests. (Don't worry, she doesn't mean those protests.)
So let's break down my major problems one by one, shall we?
Alpha Males
We've got two love interests here, people. Both of them alpha males in their own way.
In this corner, we've got the large, in charge, temper inducing, 'We can't be together because reasons', and quick to kiss other girls....Liam!
In this corner, we've got the best friend, "friend-zoned", well-meaning, 'Why won't you love me?', and unnecessary addition to create a love triangle...Justin!
They're both alpha males, Liam more than Justin, but Justin still tells Callie "'...I won't allow Kirk or anyone else to speak to you or about you that way. What happens to my girl happens to me. Do you understand what I'm saying? I know you want me to stay out of it, but you need to know that's how it'd be if things change between us.'"
Liam threatens to punch Kirk. Repeatedly. And then does so.
All of this while Callie is saying 'Oh please, men, don't defend me! (Totally defend me.) I'm a strong independent woman! (I'm not.)'
Liam also likes to repeatedly remind us that he's mean. And a boxer. And a mean boxer.
His expression went flat. "I'm not glaring. I'm thinking."
"Well, it looks mean."
"I am mean, Callie,"
Liam also does the dickish thing that all Paranormal Romance love interests do, the whole 'we can't be together because reasons' shtick.
"Liam." I touched the back of his hand with my fingertips. He shook me away.
"I think I was wrong. I think we shouldn't be friends. Justin's an honorable guy who clearly loves you."
It's gag inducing. All of this. This is every terrible YA trope pushed to eleven. Not to mention that Callie regards her virginity as sacred and slut shames every woman when she gets a chance.
Look, I waited until marriage and then discovered nah, I'm asexual. So I totally get the whole thing about waiting until marriage. Totally awesome if that's what you want to do! Want to sleep with someone every night in high school? Also cool, so long as you have protection and it's consensual!
But it's the air of superiority that Callie has about the whole thing that rubs me the wrong way. I won't delve into the whole idea of virginity thing being a sham, but it's like she's using it as some sort of medal to hold herself above her fellow women.
While at the same time being a feminist.
Oh, and her mom is a feminist, too.
These things are explicitly told to us but at the same time, Callie only makes paltry attempts at being a strong woman who can make her own decisions.
I just....do you like all the YA tropes? Read this book.
Are you tired of Twilight look alikes? Yeah, pass.
Oh how I needed to read Prophecy. I haven't given a book 5 star in so long. I have read some meh books and a lot of good books. But there is a difference between a good book, or even a great book and a book that just warms you up from the inside out. One that you want to hug and start reading from the beginning again. That was Prophecy for me. I LOVED this book! I was excited when I read the summary and saw that it had something to do with Mythology, because that is a big hit with me. And then I read the authors foreword and she mentioned all the myths coming out and playing and mixing together and my excitement shot up a couple of levels. It was so cool to see the greek and roman gods mixing in with the norse gods. The end result was pure magic.
We knew Callie was something special right from the start, but Julie Anne Lindsey does a great job keeping exactly what a mystery for most of the book. We get hints and clues here and there, but it is hard to guess exactly what. And that was not for lack of trying on my part. I know a good amount about mythology and I couldn't even place her until just a little bit before the reveal. But you do know that Liam and his brother Oliver are something right from the start. They show up in town and live in the "haunted" Hale manor. Plus, they are super hot, so they attract a lot of attention. So much of the story is focused on Liam and Callie that we didn't get too see too much of Oliver until the second half of the book. I am hoping that we see more of him in the next book, but I am wary to say that I want him to get his whole own novel because I loved Liam and Callie so much. It might be selfish of me, but I want the two of them to be the focus of more books. I could not get enough of these two. They gave me constant butterflies. The book is bracketed as young adult. I think it is upper young adult with some new adult crossover.
Not only is the romance slow burning and fan-freakin-tastic, but the action and plot of this story kicks some serious gods booty. I really liked how Julie Anne Lindsey took a bunch of myths, put them in a blender, gave them a whirl and out came her awesome conglomeration. Why can't all the myths come and play together?? I think it is s brilliant idea. Prophecy seriously has it all, it has an intriguing plotline, hot vikings, a fiery heroine, and one heck of a romance. I want more from the Calypso series right now. It is already on my favorites list.
Prophecy was an outstanding, new young adult read.
Callie's life makes a drastic change when new neighbors move into the spooky house next door. The Hale house has had a cursed stigma for years. With their return, strange things begin to happen...but the strangest thing is only Callie can remember it.
Caught in the middle of a Norse Armageddon, no one is quite sure what or who Callie really is, especially the Hales.
Budding romantic interest, ancient gods and demi-gods, a battle of good and evil, where could you go wrong...Prophecy has it all.
I loved the unexpected plot twists and turns. Lindsey kept me on my toes and riveted to the pages. I am looking forward to Calypso #2.
I received this ARC copy of Prophecy from Kensington Books in exchange for a honest review. This book is set for publication October 6, 2014.

First things first. I will read book two. Take my money! If you sent it to me today I would blow off work tomorrow and read through the night. It was so good.
Here are some things I loved about the book:
1. It was like the author read Parajukee’s Ten Ways a Romance…Becomes A Bad Romance. If you haven’t read this article, you should, then you’ll notice that it was like Julie Anne read it and did the exact opposite of everything.
There was partial insta-romance but it was a lot more developed than most romance books so I was okay with that. I liked that Callie tried to consider her options before racing straight to her love interest when he came in the picture.
2. I liked that, despite the love triangle between Liam, Callie, and Justin, Callie actually thinks through things. She respects her friendship with Justin and doesn’t want to damage it. She weighs things out and truly access what she wants and goes about trying to find the best way to make that happen without hurting anyone in the process.
3. When the action hits, it’s major and epic.
4. The confusing myths. I know this doesn’t sound like a good thing but it is. If I tried to sum it up for you, you’d have a big question mark on your face but they way Julie Anne explains it is extraordinary. I loved it!
Here are things I didn’t like about it:
…
Nope. Nothing.
Extremely good read. Get it as soon as possible and devour it like I did. Then hit me up so we can talk about.
PS: I’ll never picture Liam as a blonde. He’s got black hair to me. I don’t know why I can’t shake that even though the author explicitly says it early on.
I received a copy for a book tour. All thoughts are my own :)
Prophecy follows a girl named Callie Ingram who has plans to get out of her small town and get a life. She needs to get out. That is, until Liam Hale walks into the picture. He's gorgeous, brooding, and lives in the Haunted Hale Manor. Then, things start happening and she finds out that Liam and his brothers are Vikings, Norse demigods who have come to her small town to find the chosen one to lead the Vikings to victory against the evil Stians.
I literally just finished this book because I didn't have time at all the past weeks to read anything due to school...so a quick apology if my thoughts seem all over the place, I'm still working on putting them together.
Anyway, Prophecy was pretty dang cool. I got really excited when reading because instead of only conforming to one mythology, it combines Norse and Greek mythology into one. I loved the intertwining of the two mythologies but I felt that for most of the book, they weren't really intertwined until the very ending, but at the ending you still don't really get a super clear bridge between the two. Norse mythology definitely takes the stage at being the center mythology while Greek mythology isn't really prevalent until the end. Either way, the combination of the two mythologies is off to a great start for a pretty awesome series.
I think I loved all the characters, except for Callie. Don't get me wrong, I liked Callie, she was a really strong character with a lot of honorable features. Just compared to Liam and Justin, let's say my heart was taken already. Liam was a bit of a jerk at the beginning, but he grows on you. He's got the brooding bad boy vibe going at the beginning, but once Callie learns his secret, he starts to lighten up...just a bit. He's definitely got a ginormous jealous streak, but I guess that comes with being a Viking. Justin on the other hand, goodness I was done after meeting him for 5 minutes. He's so adorable and gentlemanly and a really great person. I'm kinda mad at Callie for friendzoning him, but fate did dictate for her to be with Liam, but Justin! He literally makes your heart want to cry for him and hug him.
Okay, enough about the guys, let's talk a bit about Callie. I don't want to give away too much because I for one wasn't expecting that to happen. As a character, I definitely liked her. Like I said before, she's really strong and I really liked how she took everything in stride. Instead of just accepting whatever Liam said because she was in love with him, she researched about Norse mythology which gave the reader some insight as well as to what the story itself was rooted in. She's also a pretty great person, friend, daughter, everything. She's levelheaded and smart and I can't ask for anything else in a MC. Her only mistake is Kirk who I will unashamedly say I wish was beheaded by a Viking knife light saber.
One of my favorite scenes was definitely the battle which was actually really damn epic! I wasn't expecting it to be so because after reading a lot of YA prophecy fulfillment battles, none of them were really action packed. This book on the other hand delivered a pretty fantastic battle that had your heart racing and internally screaming at certain parts.
Overall, Prophecy is a great start to an amazing series and I can't wait to see how it continues! Definitely recommend! :)
I wasn’t sure what I was going to get when I requested this from Net Galley, but ended up being pleasantly surprised. It may take place during the main characters senior year in high school, but it wasn’t a YA read, more like at least 16 plus, if not older.
Callie is an eighteen year old small town girl. She goes to high school, is almost an Olympic class swimmer, and works at a deli. When a family moves into the alledged haunted house next door, the entire town is excited. Callie, and her friend Allison, get even more excited when they see the two brothers from the family start at their high school. Liam Hale is arrogant, not friendly, and super hot. Callie’s best friend, Justin is ever present, wants to be more then friends, and since Callie is immediately interested in Liam, not real happy with the situation. Liam, and his brother Oliver, aren’t what they seem at all. In fact, they are Viking demi-gods, and their move to Callie’s town is not so innocent. Since that’s in the blurb, it’s not a spoiler.
In this world building, gods from Roman, Norse, and Greek mythology are pretty much all the same, just named differently depending on where the people live. I am not big on mythology by any means, and actually not a fan. That being said, I thought this was well done, or maybe I should say it wasn’t overdone. There were quite a few characters to like as well. Callie, of course, I really enjoyed. At first, I didn’t care much for Liam, and thought Justin was the better love interest for Callie, but eventually Liam did win me over. Allison gets her chance at love also. As in any book of this kind, there were plenty of villains, as well as action and scary moments.
There’s a twist in this book, but I have to say that I saw it coming really early on. It was just a bit too obvious, and maybe it was supposed to be. It really didn’t take anything away from the story, other then I kept expecting it to happen, when it wasn’t time yet. Enough said. To me, this was a page turner, and so easily read, that I was done in just a couple of days. I was pulled into the story, and pretty much stayed fascinated throughout. Of course, I didn’t know what a demi-god was until I read this, and that was an interesting facet of the book for me. I can easily say that this(demi-god) was a first in a book for me-always a good thing!
I recommend this to adult paranormal romance fans that don’t mind action, and some pretty gory scenes. There are some sexual situations, but nothing really explicit. It ended up being a really good read for me, and I look forward to reading the next in this series.(PureTextuality.com)
***ARC provided in exchange for an honest review - Sanne ~ Scandalous Book Blog***
Before starting I was a bit hesitant because of the reviews but I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised after finishing this book.
There are a lot of books out there about this topic but our demi-gods in this story are vikings and you'll also see nymphs pas through ;-)I don't really see the relation between vikings and gods like Zeus, Hermes,... but why the hell not, it is just a book after all!
Callie looks like your average school girl but I guess nothing is what it seems right?! ;-) She'll surprise everyone with who or what she really is. I am baffled as to how cool she handled all of the things that where thrown at her in a rapid pace, usually the heroine freaks out a bit.. It's propably her inner '...' that is helping her cope.
Oh sweet Liam, mister TDH, he was a new kind of male lead in every way... Yet so the same... It's hard to desribe him without kiss and tell... lol
And then we have Justin of course, Callie's best friend; who could only 'wish' for more, or not?
Throw in a bunch of other creatures and you'll have one hell of a ride!
Overall this was a pretty interesting story and I'm pretty curious as to how the other books in the series will develop.
An interesting mix of mythologies, Prophecy was a great YA read. It had a few issues but, for the most part, I liked it and enjoyed it.
Both Callie and Liam were good characters. Callie was clever and smart about the dangers she found herself in. Liam was a sweetie and very protective of those he cared about. Neither were particularly memorable but they were likable.
The romance was sweet, though rushed. I wish there had been more depth to it, but I did think they were a good couple.
My big issue with the book, though, was that there wasn't a clear melding of the mythologies. I thought the idea of mixing Greek and Norse was interesting but there wasn't a clear bridge between the two, so I didn't fully buy into it. It might just be because I'm picky about my mythology, but it didn't work for me.
The moved quickly and I was kept interested the entire way through. There were plenty of secrets revealed, though I did suspect a few of them. I enjoyed the story and the ending has me curious about what will happen next.
Prophecy was an enjoyable YA read. It might not have been perfect, but I did like it. YA lovers, you might want to check this book out.

Okay friends, just bear with me the best you can during this review. It's most definitely going to be a hot mess.
So, I definitely hated this book... Until I didn't. It was really freaking predictable and boring and had stupid romance crap.... until it didn't. It was so very young young adult... until it wasn't.
Make sense?
No, I didn't think so either. Hence the self titled 'hot mess' review. Let me try to explain.
The writing wasn't anything extra spectacular but it definitely flowed nicely. The plot started off completely unoriginal and had so much stupid young teenage high school angst and was completely repetative. I even remember thinking to myself, 'sweet Jesus, not another freaking Twilight'...
....And then things started to happen...
The plot turned down a darker path and bam! Holy crap, VIKINGS!!!! Like very seriously, my mind was blown out into left field and then plot twist after plot twist kept me out there.
I absolutely could not believe how well this book bounced backed. By the last page, I was without a doubt fanning myself and grinning from ear to ear.
I'm thoroughly excited to start the next book. I just hope it is awesome from page one.
(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to Kensington Books and NetGalley.)
I really did not like this book at all.
I didn’t really like the characters, they came across as hasty and immature, and I just couldn’t like them. The things they said annoyed me, and they just generally irritated me.
The storyline in this also bugged me. It seemed less than believable, and Vikings? Oh, no thank you! There was romance, which seemed to be turning into a love triangle, and I wasn’t interested. There was some sex in this too, so not suitable for younger readers.
The ending to this was a relief, but I had really, really lost interest by that point. This was another book that I was just glad to see the end of. 4 out of 10
What I liked: I liked the different approach with demigods, they were interesting. The clans aspect of the demigods and their claim to the Viking heritage was something I hadn’t seen before. Also, the allusion to Greek mythology because of Nike and her three brothers with the Norse twist, I found that pretty cool. The romance aspect of the story I didn’t always agree with (I rooted for a different character), but I did like the romance to it. High school, you can’t avoid romance or drama. There’s plenty of petty high school drama in here and I loved it. Although, the way it was enacted made me feel for Callie. No one deserves what happened to Callie. Callie though, I loved her and her personality. She’s not just resilient and loyal, we see her awkward and shy because of her awkwardness. She was three dimensional, and I fell in love with her as a character. I’ll be rooting for her through the books! I loved the writing for the book, and it has that tone and ability to capture the moment in places. I can’t forget to mention Liam, and the first meetings Callie had with him. I laughed, there’s no denying it. They were funny to me!
What I didn’t like: I wish the mythology had become more involved in the story than it did, it felt glossed over and I wanted more of it fit into the story. It felt like it took the back seat unless it needed to be brought up in more detail. This lead to less of a fantasy feel in the beginning, and I expected fantasy to play more of a part in the overall story than it did.
Overall Review: Prophecy is a good read, and something a bit different with it’s fantasy aspect. The romance was cute, and the characters were likable and some were characters I loved to hate. Some characters were ones I was split about and by the end had an idea about how I felt about them. The characters all seemed a bit complex, and I enjoyed the movement of the story, and where it’s left us at the end. I look forward to the next book!
Recommend?: It depends on what you like. The fantasy part is present, but it has contemporary romance that seems to overshadow the fantasy portion at times. If your interested in the blurb though, go for it!
I Received A Complimentary Copy Of This Book From The Author/Publisher In Exchange For My Honest Review!
This is the first viking book I've read in many years and in the past I wasn't a fan of them. Maybe that had something to do with the genre I don't know but this viking book I found myself actually enjoying.
I was drawn in by Liam from the beginning but then again I like the mysterious bad boy keep your distance persona. As the story progresses Liam continues to hold my attention and I start to wonder what all his secrets are.
Callie at times annoys me but for the most part I like her. A lot happens and gets thrown at her and she handles is very well she doesn't freak out or go into hysterics. Her strength and dedication and loyalty to her friends and loved ones are things I admire about her.
Justin is Callie's best friend. Liam thinks that Justin may be important to the Vikings and the war that they are fighting. I think that he and Callie are very close and at times I wonder if her feelings for Justin are stronger than those for her boyfriend.
There's no love triangle though for those of you who don't like those which I was glad for because I really would hate for that to happen. There is a twist thrown into the story but I saw it coming early on in the book. Maybe you will...Maybe you won't!
All in all a good book that I would recommend to anyone looking for a fun enjoyable read. I was able to lose myself in the story and characters for the few hours it took me to read this book. I'm interested in seeing where the author goes next with this series.
This unusual YA paranormal thriller features Vikings, Norse and Greek gods, and a fight for dominance of the world. Full of teenage angst and drama, the story morphs into a quest for humans who are really immortal Viking warriors. Lindsey weaves a tale that enthralls the reader until the last word and leaves them begging for the next installment.
The only thing I don't like about Julie's books is that they make me stay up way too late reading because I just get sucked in! I didn't know anything about this storyline when I started reading and loved watching it unfold.
I was a bit disappointed in Prophecy. I was hoping for more mythology and less teenage romance/angst. Even the final battle was fairly anticlimactic. Regardless, it was a fun paranormal YA read. I'd recommend it for fans of the YA paranormal genre.
Started it last night and finished this morning. Could not put it down. Intriguing collision of Norse and Greek mythology with a little YA romance thrown in for good measure. There were a few times I started to worry it was going to fall into the trap of a heroine who was strong, but only insofar as the even stronger hero who brings it out of her. Fortunately the characters were well written enough to coax me into love with them and they kept me going. In the end, I was NOT disappointed. Hear me roar, indeed! I can’t wait to read #2!
Thank you for providing a digital egalley for me to read and give my honest review. Unfortunately, this book wasn't really for me The characters were not fleshed out. They were too immature for me and there was no growth. I had zero connection. Pacing was slow. And the plot didn't keep me wanting to turn the pages.. The development just was not there. I had to push and push and push to get through it. Of course there is a cliffhanger ending, but because I didn't like the book I won't be moving on.
Phenomenal book! I couldn't put it down! I absolutely loved this book. I enjoyed the characters and small town feel of the book. There was plenty of romance and action to keep my heart beating fast. The author did a great job building characters I feel in love with as well as some I loved hating haha She added plenty of mystery and suspense as she led readers through plot twists and turns. I'm anxious to the read the next book on this series, but also sad there are currently only 2 books.
I normally don't read young adult novels, but Prophecy by Julie Anne Lindsey is so much more for me. I enjoyed the mythological aspect peppered through the book. It's so full of twists and turns throughout that it made it hard to put down. I want to find out what happens to the characters in the next installment. What other adventures await the characters and me? I can't wait to find out. Ms. Lindsey, you have me hooked.
I finished it. Was it a page turner... No. Did I like the characters, sort of. Would I have cared it they all were killed... No. I usually like love triangles but this one was a bit frustrating. Justin gave up to easily. The plot moved slow and the majority of the book was educating us about who Liam was and eventually who Callie turned out to be. I miss my $3.99.
This is an amazing read that I am glad that I read. It moves along at a speed which makes for an easy read. The characters are great and you want to see them overcome everything that may get in their way and the story keeps you interested and reading until the end. This book needs to be on your TBR list, no doubt about it.
This was a great read. It was hard to put down. I loved learning the main characters story. And who wouldn’t love big good looking guys moving in next door? I loved the Vikings twist.
I really liked the premise of Prophecy, and the plot was pretty good once it got going. However, it is way too much like Twilight in the set up. I'm not saying that's a terrible thing, but it killed a lot of the uniqueness that it had going for it. Callie is just your normal, teenage girl until she meets the Hales. Liam, Oliver, and their parents have just moved into the haunted mansion next door, and there's a nonstop stream of rumors about why the family moved all the way from Iceland to Ohio. Of course, Callie catches the eye of Liam, and from there her life changes. She's not who she thought she was, and the world is not the world she thought she knew. Gods and Vikings are real, and there's a battle brewing in her very own backyard.
Let me just get all of the Twilight comparisons out of the way, since I ended up liking Prophecy, once it started to diverge. Callie is obviously Bella, and yes, she is clumsy, but there's nothing else remarkable about her until she discovers her connection to the supernatural. She has a best friend name Justin, who desperately wants to be more than friends, and he is also unknowingly connected to all of the Viking activity in their small town. Once Callie gets a glimpse that something is different about Liam and his family, she jumps into an internet search, and then confronts him, and he tries the whole stay away from me, I'm dangerous thing, but they fall into deep insta-love and he has to protect her from the baddies of his kind. Oh, and his family lies about their familial ties and ages since they're ancient, and they have to move a lot. I'm sure there was more, but this is enough.
Once you get past all of that, Prophecy is actually quite interesting. I found the Norse and Greek mythology refreshing from the usual paranormal plots, even if it still comes down to good versus evil and unlocking some prophecy that no one really understands. There's lots of danger with the warring clans, and some uncertainty about whether Justin is the one they're searching for or not. Callie's connection wasn't all that surprising, until that twist at the end, which I did not see coming at all. I just wasn't completely sold on that romance, especially since it's contrasted a lot with Callie's previous relationship. Her ex, Kirk, is the worst! I wanted to punch him in the balls every time he was on the page, but then again, I would be scared my hand would catch something.
In the end, I enjoyed Prophecy. It wasn't too original or special, but I think it has some great stuff going for it. I'm confident that the following books will improve, since we're past all of the set up and it can really get into the mythology.
Even as I am writing this review I can’t quite decide if I liked this book or if I really didn’t like it. There are many reasons that leave me left right in the middle. It’s not the writing or the flow of the story either. The writing was done well and the flow was perfect. I wasn’t skipping pages or paragraphs and I didn’t get bored. So the story has that going for it. It’s the story itself that I have a problem deciding.
One thing it had going for it was the mythology. I loved the way the author brought that into the story and it was something new. I have read books about Gods and Goddess but I have yet to read about Vikings. The author brings in the mythology and weaves it into the story in a way that it is really easy to grasp. She is able to explain it so there is no confusion and we don’t get bored going through the history.
Justin and Callie. This is one thing I really am confused about and I can’t get myself to like or even enjoy their scenes. For me the author can’t seem to decide if she wants to put a love triangle in the book or not. The author comes right up against the line of the triangle and then backs away. Another thing about them is that they act more in love and coupley than Liam and Callie do. Callie seems to show more affection to her “best friend” than the guy she is calling her boyfriend. The author has written the words that will determine if I continue with this series. Callie has said that she and Liam are destined, soul mates and if it turns into a love triangle after that I don’t know if I can read the next book.
But I hope it doesn’t come to that because I think this series could get even more interesting than it already is. I want to know more about this world and the mythology. I grew to really like the supporting characters like Oliver and her best friend. (I could take or leave Justin) Anyway Lindsey has a real knack for storytelling. There were lots of twists and turns. You seem to learn more and get surprised in every chapter.
I am going to have to leave my ultimate opinion about the series until the second book but for now I would definitely recommended reading this book. It has the makings of a great series!
