Brilliantly explains how Jung broke away from Freud, and describes his own near-psychotic breakdown, a night-sea voyage from which he emerged with new insights into the unconscious mind.
I have been fascinated by Jung's concepts of archetypes and the collective unconscious, ever since I encountered them in the works of Joseph Campbell. Though a hardcore rationalist myself, I appreciate Jungian mysticism on how it connects myth and art with the psyche.
This book is excellent for people who do know a bit of Jungian psychology, and want to get an idea about the man and his methods, as well as his life and times. However, if you are totally clueless about Jung, this might not work well as an introduction, and many concepts are likely to fly over your head.
I'm not an expert on Jung, but I've read some opinions of readers who feel that Maggie Hyde focuses too much on Jung's mystic side. Can't say if it's true or not, but for someone like me who has long been almost a scientific rationalist, the views expressed in this book are fascinating and challenging. I'm not convinced, but this little, nicely illustrated introduction to Jung made me think outside of the box. A decent read; you can read it in a day or two! (Well worth reading again, also...)
I've got to say this one may not work very well for people who have less or no knowledge about Jung and his works. However with the graphic illustrations, the book attempts to portray his life and overall radical, spooky (or whatever you want to call them) ideas, theories and field researches in a very brief way. I've recently read his lectures given at Tavistock Clinic, London (1935) as an introduction to the notions of analytical psychology which helped me understand better with the depictions here. As much as I find the work useful, I'm not sure it'd have been fruitful if I directly headed here. So yeah, for a beginner if you ask me, grab a good book of his, understand his basic ideas in his own words ( Either Tavistock Lectures or Memories, Dreams, Reflections would help) and get back here to grasp the overall adventures of his during childhood, with domains like Alchemy, Astrology and others because it would avoid give the readers a sense of oversimplification and triviality.
Jung takes Freud and makes his psycho-analysis even shittier by making it analytic-psychology, as if inverting the adjective with the noun would sweeten the turd of the tautological pseudo-science.
This graphic novel provides a great service for those who did not realize the full extent of the crazy emanating from Jung and his weird beliefs. I did not.
In the madness of the early Jungian beliefs on human psychology, I saw Heidegger’s Being and Time within parts of this book. The overlap was obvious. I would not have known the connections if not for this graphic novel.
There’s a connection that I want to mention only in passing. Oswald Spengler’s Decline of the West with his fascist universals archetypes and in particular his Volume I inspired by Nietzsche and Goethe was a inspiration for Heidegger, Joseph Campbell, Arnold J. Toynbee and perhaps Carl Jung since the motifs all seem to overlap. I know from my readings that Heidegger, Campbell, and Toynbee all credit Spengler for forming their intellectual bearing.
Myers-Briggs and its personality types had always previously eluded me in the past. This book showed how Jung thought about personality and functions and gave me insights into finally understanding what they were getting at by showing how Jung dealt with his pseudo-science personality types within his analytical-psychology.
Synchronicity is pseudo-science regardless of how one dresses it up. There’s really no defense for it and this book would have been better served by not trying to defend it.
This book failed the user when it talks about physics and the quantum world and falsely connected Jung’s ramblings with how science really works. I guess, that part of the script was just written by an overzealous fan of Jung.
Jung is definitely full of shit. He mixes religion, spiritual, science with unconscious conscious psychic psyche and so on, and as reader of many other books that appeal to Jungian archetypes, universals and synchronicity it takes an oversized comic book like this to fully appreciate the depth of the madness but at the same time realized that even thinkers like Heidegger can turn the mire into a coherent philosophy. I would not have known that connection unless I had read this graphic novel.
The artwork is nice, and it explains a lot of Jung's theories, and now I know Jung mixed a lot of spiritualism stuff into his theories and the man is in fact more like shaman than a scientist. LOL
I was expecting a kind of Jung for beginners but this was not it. For me it wasn't fluid, it seemed to jump from topic to topic and the comic book style didn't help either. It left me confused and feeling like I have to start again.
It touches on many elements, but there was too much jargon.
In the beginning, this book comes across as a bit juvenile, but don't let that turn you away. As I read this work I came to the conclusion that this guide is best for those readers that are completely unfamiliar with Jung. It's a great book for high school/or college-age adults that are just beginning to become acquainted with basic psychology and its founders. It does a good job of providing an overview of Jung and the development and evolution of several of his theories, as well as highlights those people and events that influenced the various paths he took in his research at different stages of his life. So, it is good for what it is, a basic, brief introduction to the man and his contributions to psychology. It is not meant to be an exhaustive list, or detailed examination of his various beliefs, practices and discoveries. That would be impossible for any book given the length and richness of his life and career. If you've not read anything about Jung and are curious, this is a great book for you. If you are a well-read scholar and student of psychology, you probably won't learn anything new, but you may still find some entertainment, and possibly further enlightenment, from the illustrations used throughout the book.
As someone who knew almost nothing about Jung, the book was really hard to understand and confusing to me... After reading few wiki articles and documentary about Jung, the book made sense. But as the introduction to Jung, the book is as confusing as Jung himself.
I knew just a bit about Jung's archetype theory, but I didn’t know his theories were so heavily leaning on mysticism. According to this book, Jung is more of a mysticist than a psychologist. A very interesting read.
Jung for Beginners is a great opportunity for those who never had the opportunity to study the teachings of Carl Gustav Jung.
What I liked about Jung was his capacity and willingness to continue to evolve and to question and study everything to figure out how it fits in the psyche.
Jung recognized that the task of the psychoanalyst was to discover a patients secret.
Due to the wide range of his thought, Jung’s influence extends far wider than the theory and practice of analytical psychology. He bridges the world of science (the testing of theories through empirical, clinical observation) and that of divinities (the realm of spirits, omens and mythopoeic imagination)).
Little Book of Big Ideas Medicine is an essential read.
Book wasn't bad; illustrations/cartoons were appreciated. But Jung's whole body of work seems like "hooey" to me. What would make us think that he has things any more right than anyone else? His theories seem complicated, and I don't know how useful they really are in practice. I know that there are many "Jungian" analysts, and therefore many Jungian "analysands." But does this stuff really work? Why? Because of my lack of background in psychology, I'm not qualified, by any stretch of the imagination, to say one way or the other.
While Jung bridges the world of science and that of divination, I wonder if I should call his work science or pseudo-science. I may not fully comprehend his psychoanalysis, neither agree nor compelled by his theories but it’s undeniable that his work still influences today’s psychology and religion studies. The illustrations are excellent and his life is fascinating to read. I can’t say this book is for beginners since it still has many complex ideas that were oversimplified.
