KimihIro Watanuki has a wish on layaway with Yûko Ishikawa, the sultry time-space witch who can grant anyone’s deepest desire… for a price! Still, working like a slave in Yûko’s shop hasn’t dampened Kimihiro’s enthusiasm for his cute classmate Himawari-chan, nor his irritation with his too-cool rival Dômeki, the guy who always seems to be around during Kimihiro’s most embarrassing moments.

But when Dômeki, trying to be a good samaritan, inadvertently becomes the object of a terrible grudge, Kimihiro seeks Yûko’s help. However, the cost for her assistance is steep: Kimihiro would be permanently impaired! Is such a sacrifice worth it for someone he would rather have disappear?

Includes chapters 43–47.

CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.

In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.

In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.

I was expecting the spider's curse to be a "one episode and done" thing, but it's gone on for quite a while. Fine with me--I prefer ongoing threads to one-shots any day.

Yuuko is a cool character. I like her a lot, and I love her outfits (while raising a brow at the double-D elements of her character design).

Watanuki gets on my nerves very easily, though. So much pointless screaming and flailing around. If he settled down and accepted his situation, things would go so much better for him! But if he did, there'd essentially be two Yuukos, which wouldn't work. And the interactions between him and the calmer characters are part of the fun.

I really liked this volume! The storyline seems to be getting a bit more serious and intense. I loved the dynamics between Domeki-kun and Watanuki. This volume made me love Domeki-kun even more!!!

This made me laugh:

This volume begins a story thread that isn't really resolved until the middle of volume 8 and continues to add complications even after that.

Domeki and Watanuki end up angering a creature that puts a curse on them. Watanuki has to work through his issues and feelings about Domeki and try to understand what it means to be friends.

Also in this volume a lady comes to the shop with a picture she would like destroyed, and a strange creature tries to eat all the words in a book.

The woman with the photo story was incredibly disturbing . . . sometimes the humor and sarcasm makes me let down my guard and then there's THIS and I'm freaked out. In a good way.

(reread 2019: and the spider - on top of the photo story - this one was disturbing all around. but then there are adorable panels of Yuko drinking and hassling Watanuki with the black Mokona that are absolutely priceless)

This is one of my favorite volumes of xxxHOLiC because so many damn things happen. Doumeki and Watanuki's right eyes, sacrifice, the book worm, gay subtext - this is why I love you, xxxHOLiC!

Review for complete series

xxxHolic is not the type of manga that I would usually pick up - somehow, stories about stores with special services have never really caught my interests. As it happens to be a CLAMP manga which is heavily interwoven with Tsubasa and also has ties to Blood C, I knew I'd at the very least have to give it a chance. The good thing is, apart from the ending, it's a pretty neat manga series.

Watanuki has always attracted ghosts and spirits and he wishes they would just go away. Fate leads him to Yuko's wish-granting shop, but wishes don't come for free. In order for Watanuki's wish to be granted, he must work in the store and becomes involved in all manners of the supernatural.

The art is easily recognisable as CLAMP's, yet it is different. Everything is in black and whites with no greyscales and the characters' eyes are rather empty looking, even the covers are anything but vibrant. But this is actually very well suited for the atmosphere of this series. I only wish that, similar to Tsubasa, the characters' limbs weren't so unnaturally long.

What I first thought to be a rather bland set of characters soon turned out to be a much deeper and very likeable bunch. It's odd, I was against every character from the start and I can't even put my finger on when it changed, but I ended up loving them all. I must confess, I preferred the first three-quarters of the story more - Watanuki becomes a more serious character after certain events and I just prefered him the way he was before. That being said, I can understand how and why he changed.

Although there is an underlying story that is interlaced with Tsubasa, the rest of the series is very much episodic. The different episodes all revolve around legends and myths and it's very interesting to read about them. Not only are the origins explained, but given the modern setting of this series, they are always shown with a contemporary sample. I am only guessing here, but I feel as though having visited Japan and recognising various elements increased my enjoyment of this series as it really is very heavy on Japanese-lore. This holds particularly true about the Jorougumo chapters - there's just something very unsettling about these joro spiders.

The story can be a little slow at times but it generally has good pacing. It's a nice balance between humour, horror and a bit of moral lecturing - in a good way. Unfortunately, as is often the case, the ending isn't exactly satisfying. In fact, it's not that much of an ending at all; would I not know that this series is complete with 19 volumes, I'd think there is more to come. Thanks to its episodic nature, this series can in a sense conclude at any time it wants to. Yet the underlying story is left hanging in the air and there's nothing in terms of closure. CLAMP has started a sequel (which is one of their many works on hiatus - surprise!) which may or may not remedy this issue at some point, but for that, one will need to wait for the sequel to conclude. Otherwise, there are a few glimpses of Watanuki in Blood C which I feel not that many people know of - have a look if you care to see more of what happened to Watanuki post xxxHolic!

An accident while cleaning up Dômeki’s place causes Dômeki to fall under a curse and lose the use of an eye. Watanuki decides to sacrifice his own in order to help him, but Dômeki doesn’t appreciate or accept this. Advising and guiding them through all of this is Yûko, who reveals a little more of why Dômeki cannot enter her store. Even Himawari-chan is starting to notice the forces of destiny pushing Watanuki and Dômeki together. Strange things start happening to Watanuki’s vision other than loss. In the meantime, a customer comes to Yûko’s store, wishing to hide a photograph which contains a secret, a secret determined to reveal itself in one of the creepiest xxxholic stories yet. All together this was another intriguing tale, deepening Watanuki and Dômeki’s relationship, yet allowing Watanuki to spend more time with Himawari-chan, whom shows surprising insight behind her cheery exterior. Yûko was the usual complex mixture of fun, wisdom, and mystery, offering a little more direct information to Dômeki, perhaps because she was sympathetic to his situation. Maru, Moru, and Mokona were as always Yûko’s cheerleaders, even when the story themes took on a heavier weight, touching on those which have appeared in Tokyo Babylon, X 1999, and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, involving individuals choices, consequences, the burden of sacrificing yourself for another, and the scars it can leave on a person you want to protect. These motifs have been in this storyline since the beginning, yet they seemed to delve deeper this time. A darker theme was developed as well, one that Yûko spoke of to Watanuki in the very beginning, of the weight of certain actions. One woman suffers as the consequence of that weight and Yûko shows again just how mercilessly fair she can be about granting a wish. All of these plot and character elements came together in a lean, languid art style, true to this series’ particular look, evoking a unique CLAMP mythical, yet everyday fashion. For all of these qualities, I give this four stars.

Kasihan.

The spider story! I LOVED it. Like, the relationship w Domeki had hit a bit of a stand still. Domeki is hinting that he cares for Watanuki but Watanuki keepsjusy being himself, loud and always ~bothered~ by Domeki. I loved that last volume he had to forgive him, for ACTUALLY making a choice that made him upset. But here, we have Domeki needing to process Watanuki and his sacrifice that he made without Domeki's consent.

I love Domeki then trying to undo it, being told no and still researching how to undo it himself, Watanuki being genuinely unable to accept this...delicious angst. I love it.

Also CLAMP and eyes, name a more iconic duo. CLAMP and themes of sacrifice and love, name a more iconic trio. You can't.

I like the build up of multiple things, like Himawari insisting that Domeki should be with them, and the arc with the photograph. I liked that a lot, I didn't focus on it for the review but it was well told. Creepy and poignant.

I'm usually not a big fan of being told to wait something out because it'll get better. As I get older, I find there's only so many book and anime series I want to spend my time with. If something doesn't grab my attention within a certain time frame, I'm bound to move on.

xxxHolic is proving itself to be a great investment as I continue to frolic in my Clamp Era. With each volume, I think the team is doing a better job at incorporating the one off sideplots in the overarching narrative. Watanuki and Doumeki's relationship here continued to develop after the incident described in the blurb. Their rivalry is shared because it feels there's a mutual dislike there, but I think the latter cares more about the former than what meets the eye (puns and potential homoeroticism, oh my!). Yuuko continues to look fashionable as always. Her view on the world is multifaceted and Clamp's expansion of this feels like it's building to a satisfying conclusion.

I inhaled this volume. It was so engaging that I didn't understand when I finished it. The spider's curse was so unexpected. I wonder if there was another way to get rid of it and Watanuki just jumped on the most dramatic one. Clamp's fascination with eyes is creepy. People eating each other's eyes because they hold magic and power. I still have nightmares from Tsubasa because of that.

But Yuuko's words are so true. Each time we meet someone important we become part of each other. Even if our lives go different ways later on, we've made contact and therefore we aren't alone; we don't belong just to us and our decisions have an impact on others, too. Therefore we should be aware than when we hurt ourselves we hurt others too.

may be i can say that in this volume the story got a little bit deeper. sth really is cooking aside from all the side stories. domeki and watanuki friendship got better and deeper here. in the previous volumes, watanuki seems to unwilling to let go his ego. here in this volume, watanuki sacrifices sth in order to save domeki. which make their friendship got bit more thicker. there are stories about vengeance and about what cost it to kill somebody's life. and in the last page, clamp seems to give a clue about himawari which had yuko concerned from the very beginning.

Dispite Watanuki trying to act like he doesn't like Dômeki, it's nice to see him trying to help him by taking the spider's punishment. Even bringing him lunch that wasn't asked for.

The fact that Himawari's book contained the pesky bookwork that was intended to be taken home to Dômeki's home is very suspicious. I feel that she is playing them both, that's why she's "friendly" to them, but not dating either. I'm curious as to where this is going.

I really liked the depiction of what a book worm is in this story. Eating the words from books is crazy, creative and would be infuriating!

When Domeki ruins a spider's web, it unleashes a grudge that blinds him in one eye - and only by the sacrifice of his own right eye does Watanuki take the curse on himself; as Domeki distances himself from Watanuki, a woman begs Yuko for help with a mysterious photograph...CLAMP brings another intriguing entry, atmospheric and witty in all the right places. Who will end up bearing the grudge?

Another fantastic book in the series and I must say that I really wish that I could keep my life in as good a shape as interesting as theirs. Other than that I really can't say much more other than I love the idea of the spider.

A cute volume, though one of the events remains unsolved, leaving poor Watanuki without an eye because they made a spider mad. A little silly, but it seems to be triggering friendship opportunities.

The story with the spider curse is so good! Love it when the manga explores the relationship between Watanuki and Doumeki. Also, the story about the moving photograph? So creepy!
