The True Love Brides #4

The Warrior's Prize

Rate this book
Outraged that her beloved brother's soul is to be the Fae tithe to Hell, Elizabeth knows that she must save him. She is the only one in her family who can see the Fae, after all, and is already cursed by their king herself. Malcolm may have offered to replace his comrade out of honor, but Elizabeth knows who better deserves to live--and it is not the handsome rogue, Rafael, who is concerned with his own welfare alone. It should be easy to make a wager with a mercenary, especially as Elizabeth does not care about the cost to herself. To her surprise, though, Rafael proves to be the man who not only takes her dare, but banishes the Fae king's curse with kisses that turn her blood to fire. Could this hardened warrior, who appears to have no heart, be the destined love she has awaited?

At first glimpse, Rafael believes Elizabeth to be an angel sent to judge him--and he knows what her verdict will be. He has made choices in order to survive, and it not proud of them. But Elizabeth dares him to change, with an audacity that awakens a nobility of purpose that Rafael has forgotten he possessed. Can this bold maiden heal the wounds of his past? Can Rafael earn the right to grant her the life she deserves--and do so before the Fae king springs his trap, making Elizabeth his captive forever?

Oh, what a suspenseful tale we find in the Warrior’s Prize! Elizabeth is the last unwed sister of Alexander’s and takes place at Ravensmuir. The beginning of the story overlaps with the ending of The Frost Maiden’s Kiss, Malcolm’s story and we faced intense battles and dealings with the Fae. The overlap worked wonderfully. Elizabeth has always been able to see the Fae and has caught the Fae King’s eye who seeks to trap her forever.

Rafael is a mercenary who fought with Malcolm and the reason Malcolm found himself in trouble with the Fae. Elizabeth sets out to make Rafael surrender to the Fae, but finds herself smitten. Of course, she is young and fancies a life as a mercenary’s wife to be thrilling and exciting. Despite his attraction to Lady Elizabeth Rafael knows he cannot ask this of her.

I was not sure if Rafael would cause me to swoon as he did Elizabeth but swoon I did. He was a fierce warrior and soothing on the eye but I am not a wanderer and I wondered if he was honorable enough. Delacroix soon had me falling for him and I felt he was perfectly suited for Elizabeth.

Impossible love and the devious Fae had me completely caught up in the tale. I wanted my HEA and anxious to see how it would all play out. This had me listening into the wee hours of the night and looking for excuses to grab my earbuds. In The Warrior’s Prize Delacroix weaved in so many twists that I found myself holding my breath and yelling at the characters. I love when an author gets me so caught up in the story that the characters become real. Both Rafael and Elizabeth are strong, determined and stubborn characters. The two together created an electricity that you could actually feel. Finvarra, the Fae King was wicked and the perfect villain. I loved seeing previous characters and others from the fairy realm.

Saskia Maarleveld has been the narrator throughout the series and I absolutely loved listening to her. Even her male voices were soothing and not that hoarse tone we often hear from female narrators. I could easily identify who was speaking as she drew me into the story.

In the final True Love Brides book, Elizabeth finally meets her match. Elizabeth has been present for all of the previous 6 books about the siblings of Kinfairlie, and I have been highly anticipating her book, and now that I have read it, I believe my expectations were too high.

Claire Delacroix typically weaves stories where there is an instant spark of recognition between the hero and the heroine. She injects her stories with wonderful mysticism and prose focused on fate so it is easy for me to buy into it. However, in this story, it felt overdone and forced and Elizabeth's character, instead of being clever, romantic, and witty came across as short-sighted, foolish, and pathetic.

In this story, there is an overlap of events in what happened in Book 3 (Malcolm and Catriona's story). In fact, half the book takes place at Ravensmuir when Malcolm is being challenged for his holding, although now the events are told from Elizabeth and her hero, Rafael's perspective. Rafael is the mercenary who came with Malcolm to his new holding and actually put Malcolm into a deadly situation. Delacroix created quite a challenge for herself in making him a hero for one of the most beloved characters in this series.

Throughout both the Beauty Brides trilogy and more so in the True Love Brides series in particular, there is a strong paranormal element with the Fae. There were so many potential story threads that could have been woven into this story with the Fae and Elizabeth's family, but it just fell short to me. Catriona (from Book 3) was depicted as very prickly and not the kind but strong soul from her own book. Rosamunde barely made an appearance, and Alexander was more grumpy and overbearing than I've ever seen him. Even the Fae spriggan Darg didn't make an appearance until the last few pages of the story! Then, Elizabeth's abilities to see the Fae and the ribbons that tie the true loves together, while mentioned, was not fully capitalized on in the way I had hoped.

The first half of the story moves very slowly and took me several days to read, despite my initial excitement. Rafael thinks that Elizabeth is the most beautiful woman he has ever seen and calls her 'my little angel' in Spanish. Elizabeth has been suffering from seeing death on men since being cursed by the Fae king Finvarra and is drawn to the vitality and strength that radiates from Rafael. There is an instant attraction that was too over the top, even for me, and then the next 50% of the story is about Rafael recognizing that Elizabeth and himself do not have a future and Elizabeth pursuing him CONSTANTLY despite his objections (his attempt to be honorable) and the warnings of her family. Despite the reader knowing Rafael's thoughts and his attraction to Elizabeth, he really didn't show it and thus, Elizabeth's relentless pursuit of him seemed pathetic and creepy.

The last 30% of the book was much more of the adventure that I liked, but Elizabeth was powerless and had to be rescued and things turned out too conveniently for Rafael to suddenly be "worthy" of Elizabeth. While the mystery of the Fae was still nice and I wanted to know what happened to wrap up this series, in my opinion, it felt the most hurriedly written and was the weakest of the quartet, mostly because I feel there was a missed opportunity with Elizabeth's character. Rafael needed to come such a long way in his growth that there wasn't really a chance for Elizabeth to really shine.

I am glad I finished the series and there were still moments in here that I really enjoyed (I like how she weaves in myths through the characters' storytelling during meals), but overall, this was a letdown for me and there were even a surprising number of typos. 3 stars.

Claire continues her prolific Lammegeir saga with Elizabeth and Rafael’s tale. Her breathtaking medieval historically correct Scottish backdrops and bygone dialogue sets a realistic, excellent era scene for readers, and her smooth mellifluous narrative sets the perfect pace. But it’s her hero and heroine that rule this novel with their interesting backgrounds, their hardships and their tenacity that really stand out. We also get to reconnect with all the Lammegeir siblings, the spouses and see how the clan is growing. Along with fabulous characters, an epic tale and a bit of fantasy plus the ending was fantastic.

Once again the audible version was put in the capable melodious voice of Saskia Maarleveld who brings listeners right into the story with her splendid accent, her skillful changing from female to male and her impeccable cadence that makes the story come alive and allows fans to enjoy an experience that’s more in depth than just reading it would be.

Have you ever from the beginning of a series known there was one story you couldn’t wait to read; well Elizabeth Lammegeir’s story was mine in Claire Delacroix’s True Love Bride’s series.
Elizabeth is the youngest of Roland and Catherine Lammegeir and has been a ward of her oldest brother Alexander since their parents’ death. She’s always been a force to be reckoned with and the most vocal of her sisters in regards to choosing her own spouse. She’s also the only one of her family with the gift/curse of being able to see the fey which has gotten her in and out of all kinds of trouble and it might just be that same gift/curse that will get her, her true heart’s desire; the most handsome companion of her brother Malcolm, Rafael Rodriguez.
Mercenary Rafael Rodriguez covets the beauteous maiden Elizabeth but knows that he is not good enough for someone of her status so he must convince her that she must look elsewhere for a husband but she is not so easy to deny. And he doesn’t want to!

Elizabeth has always been a romantic and with her gift/curse of being able to see the Fae and the ribbons of love between people, she was sure that she would find her own true love one day. After all of her sisters were married off and Alexander promised that she would be able to pick her own husband, Elizabeth started to wonder if she would ever find the right man.

When her brother Malcolm finally returns to Ravensmuir with his comrade Rafael, Elizabeth knows that she has met the one. The only problem is that Rafael is a mercenary with no intention of ever settling down and getting married. Although Elizabeth can see their ribbons are intertwined, another plans to claim her for his own. The Fae king, Finvarra, has long admired Elizabeth and has vowed to make her his. Will Rafael make a claim to Elizabeth's heart or will she fall victim to the Fae king and be trapped in the Fae world?

This was an excellent ending to the True Love's Bride series. It was wonderful to watch all of the siblings of Kinfairlie grow up and find their happily ever afters.

Disclaimer: I haven't read the other books in this series, so I'm not sure what I'm missing out on..

That said, let me preface that I am a fan of romance and the romance genre in general. However, this book is not the romance I am looking for and while I understand that, you know, ancient times and yada yada, whatever, it's just isn't my cup of tea unfortunately...

Another strike against this book is that, it would have benefited greatly if it was trimmed to half of what it is...there is just so much in there that just...isn't...necessary!

I would have loved to know more about what is going on with the fae...you know? (Feels much juicier somehow...XD) Hmm, feels like that is the only good thing going for this book....not sure I care very much about the main couple actually.

P.S. The porn is kinda meh as well~

Finally Elizabeth's story has arrived and it will not disappoint. Elizabeth has always had a connection with the Fae world and has seen the ribbons of her sisters linked to those who are to be their true mates. The King of the Fae had decided long ago that Elizabeth would be his and cut her ribbon then linked it to him. For a girl so in love with that world what could be better but not all is as it appears. Elizabeth's eyes are open to things once she meets her brother Malcolm's friend Rafael. A bad ass Mercenary who has nothing to offer this maiden or so the family thinks. Headstrong Elizabeth has never been one to give up on something once her mind is set. Find a cozy spot and settle in for the final True Love Brides story. You will not be disappointed.

Rafael & Elizabeth

I didn’t give a review of book 3 as I felt this one needed to be read along with it. Rafael as you will now know returned to Ravenmuir with Rafael and almost lost his life to the Fae because of him. So Rafael’s story is an extension of Malcolm’s. This story I found more heart thumping with trepidation. Elisabeth brought balm to the story, with determination and humour, that makes for am amazing story. I found myself holding my breathe with anxiety having to remind myself to breath and that it is only a story after all. Yet it sucks you right in seeing it all happen in your mind. I’m glad to have come to the end feeling like I managed to climb out of the book unscathed. Enjoy your journey.

The book is been waiting and waiting to read was such a let down. First of all whatever attempt that was at Spanish was a joke—-sensitivity readers and betas would be able to help with that. But what really got me was the fact half the book was a poorly done retelling of the book before it OR stories about fae from other characters. Like. What?

I went with 3 stars cause the parts that were new and true to the characters were great, but lost to a ton of info we already had.

Y otra vez: si vas a escribir en español, deberías hablar o consultar con alguien quien habla la idioma! Que horror! 😑

I’m not sure, but I think this was my favorite book of the series. At first I didn’t care too much for Rafael, but Elizabeth was able to see through his facade. I always like Elizabeth and it was fun to see her become more assertive and strong. I also liked how the author brought everything full circle. It was also good to see Dawg (I listened to the series on audio, so I am not sure how to spell the name) again and see her (he) look out for someone other then herself (himself). I really enjoyed this series.

Finally Elizabeth gets her happily ever after with the mercenary Rafael. Lots of action with the fae and their schemes, visits from family and romance. Elizabeth and Rafael don't have an easy road, but they are persistent. Great story.

Spanish sexy

I loved this the best of all the books in this series. The faye have a hold on Elizabeth but will her determination to marry a Spanish mercenary win out, even if he is reluctant. The passion was wonderful and the story the most exciting so far.

Claire Delacroix weaves magical stories within stories in this enchanting novel. The Warrior's prize is a gripping love story with a heroine that is sure to charm and a hero that will leave many a reader with a secret crush.

Elizabeth is the youngest sister in the Kinfairlie household. After the Elfin king claims she will be his, the usual inquisitive bold maiden begins a slow decline that has her family concerned for her well being. After losing interest in the mortal land, Elizabeth becomes withdrawn and pale. The pull towards the Elfin land becomes greater and greater until she decides to journey to Ravensmere for Midsummer's Eve. It's there where she first encounters Malcolm's comrade Rafael Rodriguez and where for the first time in years, Elizabeth feels a zest again for life.

Rafael's breath is stolen away by the beautiful angel that approaches the keep. She is by far the most wonderous lady he has ever encountered. When her eyes spark with mischief as she approaches him, he feels for sure that he must be dreaming. As he learns more about this bewitching young woman he knows he must stay away from her for her own good and possibly his as well. After all, Elizabeth has asked him to sacrifice his life for honor. As a sworn mercenary, Rafael only knows a life of brutality and hardship. He has sent many men to their deaths and his soul is blackened. He has no holding and nothing to offer a woman of noble birth, and indeed just being in his presence is a threat to one as naive and innocent as lady Elizabeth. He must do all in his power to send her away before he commits another sin and harms this innocent young woman. Or before he lets her enchant him to willingly put his life on the line and jeopardize his own future for her approval.

Elizabeth's belief in fate and love surpass all else. Afraid she was doomed to live for eternity in the land of the Fay, she sees Rafael both as her destined love and her hope to escape the Elfin king. Despite his protests, she is determined to show him that their match is a match meant to be. All odds are stacked against them as both her brothers from the mortal land and the Fay are determined to keep them apart. However, Elizabeth is not new to great obstacles and she knows that love will conquer all else.

The story is enchanting and exciting, with a compelling romance that will sweep you off your feet. It needs to be read as part of the series and is a delightful novel for anyone who loves romance, mystery, historical tails, and just an amazingly well written novel. Claire Delacroix has a way with words that far surpasses many writers. She has a unique ability to tell tails within a tail so that the reader ends up enjoying smaller fairy tells wrapped into a bigger novel. Packed with interesting characters, challenges, and excitement this novel is a must read!

I listened to the audio version narrated by Saskia Maarleveld. Maarleveld has a beautiful voice and delightful accent that adds character to an already brilliant story. She does an outstanding job with the different characters in the novel and the pace and clarity are perfect.

Audiobook Review:

I loved the ending to this truly delightful, emotional series. The author has created a wonder world, one easily touched with her brilliant descriptive scenes. This audiobook, with voiceover by Saskia Maarleveld takes the listening to the very source of magic! Maarleveld's lovely tone, perfect pacing and captivating accent will catapult you into this exciting world. I highly recommend this author and this series to those readers who believe in the unbelievable and who love the magic of dancing with the Fae!

I enjoyed the fact the author, using another character’s point of view, rewound the story to book three of scenes critical to the understanding of Elizabeth’s story and the dire position she is put in. This style of writing helped me recall the detail of book three, while heightening the suspense of what is to come.

I could not put this listen down, truth be known. It was highly suspenseful, layered with themes Malcolm, Elizabeth, and Raphael are struggling with -- the meaning of honor, how a person’s character drives choices made, and how events change how life is perceived. It also highlights the angst a person deals with in changing who they are, and accepting the challenge to be better.

Is there honor between warrior men? Raphael saved Malcolm’s life while in battle. Malcolm is indebted to Raphael, and the debt must be paid. Raphael, very foolishly, steps into the trap of the Fae. He is snared and will eternally be joining them. Should Malcolm pay his debt to Raphael by taking his place? It is obvious to Elizabeth, he should not.

We have watched Elizabeth grow in this superbly crafted tale. She is the shy one of the sisters, the one needing protection. She is also the only sister who is plagued with seeing the Fae, and has a connection to Dag, the spiggen. She also desires to experience life, to do more than embroidery and help with the Keep. Here in this story she blooms into the woman she is to become. She loves her brother, eager to see him back after so many years from home. She will not let the Fae have their way with him. After all, she knows they already own her, why take her brother? The Fae have found their sacrifice, the clever, but soulless Raphael. Can Elizabeth convince her brother not to take Raphael’s place with the Fae? What could save her and Raphael from the Fae?

If you haven’t started the series, do--a purely charming world told in a purely charming voice!

The Warrior's Prize is the final book in The True Love Brides quartet by Claire Delacroix. Set in 1400's Scotland, it is an enchanting medieval historical romance that is a fitting conclusion that began with "The Jewels of Kinfarlie" series and Alexander's quest to marry off his five sisters. This is Elizabeth's story who is mentioned in all of the previous books as the odd youngest sister who can talk with faeries. Like all the other stories in the series, The Warrior's Prize is well written, detailed, and adventurous.

This story begins during the events that transpired during Malcolm and Catriona's story, The Frost Maiden's Kiss. After living years as a mercenary, Malcolm returns to Ravensmuire with his band of mercenaries, including Rafael who soon falls victim to the Fae. Malcolm intervenes and offers to replace his comrade out of honor. This enrages Elizabeth who tries to persuade Rafael to save Malcolm. In doing so she soon falls in love with Raphael, due in part, to the instant physical attraction that they share (he thinks she's an angel sent to cast judgment on him). Elizabeth believes him inherently good, despite his outward appearances to the contrary. Raphael tries to teach Elizabeth a few lessons of being too trusting, but he too falls for Elizabeth. Elizabeth awakens his nobility of purpose and heals the wounds from abandonment that Rafael has carried with him for the past 20 years.

I listed to the Audbile version of The Warrior's Prize narrated by Saskia Maarleveld. She did an outstanding job bringing all of the characters to life giving each one every their own distinct voice, including a slight Spanish accent for Rafael. I cannot recommend this book and the entire series enough!

Great ending to the Bride Books!!!

Awe, could not wait to read Elizabeth's book, I have anticipated it since the first book on the siblings!!! Rafael finally takes responsibility for his actions and tries to save Malcolm from the Faes!!! Elizabeth is pleased and see her destiny at last. Rafael not thinking he is good enough for his little angel Elizabeth. Elizabeth stubborn in her own right will not take no for an answer, she sees as clear as days that she and Rafael are meant to be with their ribbons intertwined!!!! Elizabeth thinking Rafael dead and believes she will see him again in the land of Fae agrees to come willingly!!! Unbeknownst to her it was somewhat of a trick on Favannas part to get her to say yes!!! Rafael returns and must rescue her from the Kings court. You have a love that is strong a new found father and his own holding to make sure he rescues Elizabeth so they can have there happy ever after!!! Great book for an ending of the siblings!!! I can't wait to see what is next from the author!!

Not what I was expecting - it was better!

I have read all the Kinfairlie Siblings books and enjoyed each and every one. I had high hopes for Elizabeth's book and I was not disappointed! It was even better than I had hoped.

This story starts towards the end of Malcolm's book and there is a little overlap - but since this is written from an entirely different prospective, it in no way feels recycled.

Rafael and Elizabeth are perfect for each other. She is the light to his darkness and he the feeling of life that she as been missing since Finvarra claimed her.

Theirs is not a smooth journey to a HEA. They each have obstacles to overcome and at times it seems impossible that they will be together.

Ms. Delacroix writes a wonderfully complexed tale of good vs evil and a love that is destined to be.

It is a wonderful end to a great series!!

I am looking forward to her new series The Champions of Saint Euphemia. As well as promised future stories for the last Kinfairlie sibling Ross and the younger generation.

We finally get to hear Elizabeth's story that begins at the end of the Frost Maiden's kiss. Elizabeth is the last of the Kinfairlie siblings and has been in the sight of the Fae King Finvarra. She meets her brother Malcolm's mercenary friend the Spaniard Raphael. Elizabeth struggles to show Raphael the meaning of honor hoping to save herself from the Fae. The characters were well developed and their struggles keeps you connected to the storyline. The vivid settings and descriptions completely transports you to this land of old and with all its magic. I did find the pacing to slump in the middle a little with the characters telling a tale within tale to help in moving the story along. It was overall a fun entertaining read and I will definitely continue reading this series.

Claire Delacroix is a skilled author and I generally adore her historical fiction. (She's a wonderful teacher who makes history lessons come alive.) I really wanted to love The Warrior's Prize, but it's just not on the same level as her previous books in this series. Some threads of the story were fabulously entertaining, but the story dragged a little in several places. I'm normally not bothered by minor editing errors, but at least three times I had to re-read sentences because the meaning of the sentence had changed because of errors. The version I downloaded was an ebook deal for Nook app on my smartphone.

Set in medieval times in a land inhabited by the Fae, this was a very well-written, entertaining book. Elizabeth is the only one in her family who can see the Fae, and knowing that her brother's soul is to be tithed to the Fae, she is determined to save him. Her brother offered to replace his comrade Rafael out of honor, and Elizabeth challenges Rafael to help her change things. I loved reading about Elizabeth and Rafael - this was a great book! This book is part of a series with related characters, though it can be read as a stand-alone story. A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.

I think this is the best of the True Love Brides series. Amazing how the authoress links all the stories together in this last installment. Love the plot and the surprises it held. Very easy to accept that jealousy is the cause of many evils, and a wife spurned is capable of doing many things and also capable of thwarting her spouse in his efforts to achieve a mistress. It was a delightful and enthralling read, trough eight books.
