Two FBI agents - and former lovers - team up to bring down a serial killer in New York Times bestselling author Carla Cassidy's latest crime scene book

Seven people have disappeared and it's up to FBI agent Alexander Harkins and his team to bring them all home safely. But when he discovers his ex-wife, Georgina Beaumont, is part of that team, he's forced to make peace with his past in order to stay focused on the mission. Georgina is a stark reminder of the life he once had, and working together will mean trying to forget the woman he still loves. Then the killer shifts focus onto Georgina - forcing them to seek solace in one another - and Alexander is reminded just how much he stands to lose.

Georgina is pretty messed up from her horrible childhood.

It’s over, Alex, and we’re here to do a job.”
She didn’t turn to look at him and for that reason an edge of frustration rippled through him. “I was happy with you.” He pulled into a parking spot in front of the Beacon Apartments. He cut the engine but remained buckled in the seat. He stared at her until she sighed and turned to look at him. “I just want to know what happened, what I did to make you leave. Was it because I fell apart after the Gilmer case?” He’d always wondered if the weakness he’d shown after that case had somehow turned her off, had made her see him as less of a man.
“Oh, Alex, no. It had nothing to do with you.” Her eyes shimmered in the morning light, like green leaves on a newly budded tree. “I just wasn’t happy. I realized that I wasn’t meant to be in a relationship.”

Secrets. He’d always known she had secrets. He just hadn’t realized they involved childhood abuse and neglect. There was no question that it bothered him more than a little bit that she would give that piece of herself to a killer, but had never shared any of it with him throughout their marriage.

Alexander is still in love with her and such a protective, caring man. He would do anything for her.
“Did I wake you?” she asked.
“No, I’m not even close to being asleep,” he replied. “Did you need something?” His voice sounded slightly hoarse to his own ears as his blood rushed through his body.
“I need you.” Her voice sounded stark and his heart pressed painfully tight against his chest.
“You’ve got me, Georgina. Whenever you need me, you’ve always had me.”

They are both on the taskforce to find out what happened to the Connolly family, Amberly & Cole and now Jackson and Marjorie from previous books. The kidnapper makes contact with Georgina and it puts a target on her back. As they work the case, they finally have some honest conversations about Georgina's past, what went wrong and realize they are still in love.

“Why did you leave me, Georgina? Why wasn’t I enough for you? What could I have done differently to make you feel safe and secure enough to share it all with me? Why couldn’t I make you feel completely loved and not afraid to give love back?”

“You’re wrong, Georgina. You were always all that I ever wanted, and you didn’t give me enough credit if you believed I couldn’t handle both the best and the very worst of you.”

“Georgina,” he whispered her name softly. Tears chased faster down her cheeks. “Honey, all you had to do for me was just be there. When I had my nightmares and I turned over in the bed, you were always there to hold me. I didn’t need words from you. I just needed to know that you were next to me. That was enough. You were enough.”

“Come back to me, Georgina. Come back and be my wife, my lover, my life partner. Nothing has been good since you left me.” He was baring his very soul to her, feeling more vulnerable than he’d ever felt in his life.

They are both attacked and Georgina taken. Alexander knows he must save her and the others or it will destroy him.

Very emotional story. If I had a complaint, it would be I wanted a bit longer of an epilogue and would have loved to know the families were expanding since I loved all the characters from the previous books.

This well written story has a tight plot and fast twists that keep the reader interested. Georgina and Alexander have good chemistry. Perhaps the only downside is that there is little time in the action packed pages to fully explore some of the complex issues in the couples’ relationship.

Basically a procedural tv show but in book form, which is exactly what I was expecting/wanting to read, from the character descriptions at the front to the criminal [master]mind. Did not expect the , though. That was a new one for a Harlequin Intrigue. Carla Cassidy, you sneaky so-and-so.

Not a book I'll return to on reread, I don't think, but honestly a great example of telling a plot driven story with economy of words (something I legit enjoy about Carla Cassidy's writing, as much as I still giggle at some titles).

Just finished this book.. We start with an FBI task force coming together to find the missing FBI agents. The latest being Jackson and Marjorie. Alex and his ex wife are thrown together and he picks her to be on his team to help him as others go about the tasks he sets for them..They have a small suspect list and feel they are getting no where...When a knock comes on Alex's door he opens it only to be darted in the back and Georgina is kidnapped(Just when he and Georgina were having a heart to heart) Georgina wakes up in a cell next to the other agents....Alex remembers who was at the door and that finally gets the ball rolling on to finding out who the kidnapper should be. It turns out to be someone I had thought of but wasn't really for sure if he would be the bad guy...so when he unmasks himself to Georgina it really isn't a shock. A great page turning story as all the other books have been. On to the next in the series!

This volume in the series is a culminating one for the last 3 installments. It is the weakest of them all. The relationship between the H/h was redundant, that is, their internal monologues were repetitive for more than half of the book. The crime had no clues and now an 8 person FBI team is going to work on it. The logic of the investigation starts out well but then they start missing obvious clues and the perp starts handing them things. The climax was an obvious play on a past action. I felt really let down after the three book set up.
