Sir Lucien Blakemore, has hesitated for quite some time to accept his cousin's invite to a Christmas party, but this year, he decided to go, because the woman he wants to be near during the season is with her family, Miss Winifred Nightingale. Winnie is a governess, and has joined her sister in a local holiday party. The one man she least expected to run into, a man that is one of her closest friends, Lucien, Blakemore. From the first moment of Winnie coming to this house party, there is a bit of animosity toward herself and her sister. The rest of the guests are members of the Ton, and high society, and even though their father was a gentleman, he left them penniless, and they were forced to find work to survive. But the holiday season is all about miracles, and soon Winnie finds a man that changes her life. Even though they have been friends for quite some time, Winnie finds herself entering into a fake courtship that turns into something more real as they awaken a desire that threatens to consume them and makes Winnie believe in ever after...

Once Upon A Christmas Kiss is a Christmas novella that is set shortly after the third books "Why Lords Lose Their Hearts". I just love holiday romances, and I will say I adored this one. It had everything I needed for a fun Christmas romance. The characters in this story were phenomenal and I adored both of them. Lucien, is quite the hero. He is the type of man that will befriend anyone, and doesn't judge and he is fully accepting of Winnie, and is way protective of her....it gave me shills (but in a good way). I love how he comes shining through in this story and I just wanted to kiss him every time he acted the gallant hero that you see from him in the beginning. Winnie was such a strong heroine, you really come to admire her from beginning to end. She handles competition and criticism very well, and I loved the way she doesn't let what other say or imply to bother her too much. She has a strong heart and I loved seeing her character shine through in this story. The romance was fun and sweet!! There were so many moments that had me close to tears it was so tender and they were quite a match.

Overall a sensational holiday read that will get you excited for the season, with some scenes that will keep you in suspense, and a story that you can fall for!! GREAT READ!!

I don't think this author is for me. I just don't like the writing style. It is very literal and straightforward so some may enjoy it, but I like a little "art" in my stories and enjoy imagery and unique descriptions of settings, emotions, and characters.

This story is very Christmassy and takes place during a Christmas party. The heroine, Winnie, is a governess, and the hero, Lucien, is a baronet. Someone begins threatening Winnie, and Sir Lucien, who had become friends with Winnie before the start of this story, offered a fake engagement to protect her. Now, this was not a typical fake engagement; rather, Sir Lucien had every intention of making it real if Winnie would give him a chance.

There was the mystery element of who was threatening Winnie and several threads about other secondary romances and reforming characters. All this, in the midst of Christmas traditions and cold weather.

I could not bring myself to care about this characters and I barely made it through the book. I even skimmed the sex scene simply for the reason that I was ready to finish the story, which never happens (I felt like it was just thrown in there and the story would have been better without it). I had trouble with another of this author's books and I think it's safe to say that our interests don't line up. The writing isn't bad, but it definitely isn't my style.

This novella features two secondary characters introduced in When Dukes Say I Do (Trevor and Isabella’s story), the first book in Manda Collins’s Wicked Widows series. Lucien is Trevor’s best friend and Winifred (Winnie) is governess to Trevor’s two young sisters.

Lucien is such a likeable hero…handsome, charming, witty and inherently decent. He has a way of putting people at ease, as he does the shy, stuttering Miss Hawthorn.

It was a sign of Sir Lucien’s kind nature that the young lady did unsettled in his presence.

I love how he champions both Winnie and her sister when the noxious Mrs Green makes slanderous remarks.

“…if you persist in your public slander of my affianced bride and her sister, I will see to it that you and yours are made to feel the sting of my cousin’s censure. Not to mention the ton’s.”

He is honest about wanting to marry Winnie and doesn’t care what society thinks. He knows that his true friends will accept her and, as far as he is concerned – “the others can go to hell.”

Winnie is strong-minded and courageous and I love how she is not afraid to face the disapproving society ladies head on.

She looked, Lucien thought, like a golden goddess delivering a pronouncement to her minions, which was hardly the outcome Lady Emily had wished from her pointed words.

She is reluctant to marry Lucien because of their different stations in life. Her own parents’ marriage had been an unequal match and she had seen how that had ended in tragedy. I like how Lucien, although he understands her fears, is determined to show her that they are nothing like her parents.

The Christmas house party provides the perfect background for Lucien and Winnie’s mutual attraction to develop into something deeper. The sleigh ride, skating and gathering of seasonal greenery not only offers an opportunity for them to be thrown together but also gives the novella a lovely Christmas feel.

Ms Collins sustains the mystery of who is threatening Winnie well and it was certainly a surprise to learn the identity of the culprit.

Favourite Quote

To fall in love? She’d always thought it was something that happened all at once. Now she was inclined to see it as the gradual build of a hundred tiny moments: a caress on the hand, a sigh, a stolen kiss.

This friends-to-lovers novella is perfect for bringing a little Christmas cheer and forms a delightful end to the Wicked Widows series.

Once Upon a Christmas Kiss is a sweet holiday-themed novella that acts as the conclusion to Manda Collins's Wicked Widows series. I read the first book (Why Dukes Say I Do) last year and remember enjoying it. So I was excited to see it available on Netgalley especially because I have a thing for holiday historical romances.

The premise of this book is that a baronet, Sir Lucien Blakemore, reluctantly attends a Christmas party at his cousin's house, but is happy to discover that the last person he ever expected to show up. Winnie spends her time working as a governess for Lucien's neighbor and becomes a last minute invitee at the party while visiting her sister for the holidays. These two have obviously been circling around one another for quite awhile and this situation allows them to interact more.

Both Lucien and Winnie were easy to like and root for. Lucien is a little uncomfortable in large social situations, but he remains polite and genuinely sweet. His devotion to Winnie's safety and happiness was nice to see especially when other party guests treated her so badly. For Winnie's part, I admired her strength when dealing some of the snobbier attendees. I also enjoyed the realistic tone she took on her growing relationship with Lucien. She clearly cared about him, but was more hesitant about jumping into something.

The whole book was a quick read that I found very sweet. There is a subplot involving some "pranks" played on Winnie that went too far. I figured out the culprit from the beginning so I didn't enjoy that element as much and would rather have those pages to develop Winnie and Lucien's relationship more. I did like the fact that these two already knew and were attracted to each other so there wasn't any insta-love that often occurs in novellas.

While Once Upon a Christmas Kiss isn't perfect, it was entertaining and the perfect read for a winter weekend. It is also a good example of Manda Collins's writing style for anyone wanting to give her a try. I know I will be looking for the rest of the Wicked Widows series now.

I received a free e-galley of this book from St. Martin's Press via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

A very sweet historical romance holiday novella, Once Upon a Christmas Kiss was a lovely read that I quite enjoyed.

Both characters were likable. Winifred was independent and and overall lovely heroine. Her reservations about marrying Lucien were frustrating but understandable, so they didn't bother me too much Lucien was super sweet and simply adorable. He was determined to convince Winifred to marry him and protect her from the person threatening her. I liked them both.

The romance was great. Winifred and Lucien were very sweet together, even with Winifred's reluctance. I thought they were a lovely couple.

The plot was quick and I was kept interested all the way through. The mystery of who was threatening Winifred had me curious and I never suspected who it turned out to be. I enjoyed the story and the ending was lovely.

Once Upon a Christmas Kiss was a lovely holiday romance novella and I liked it. Romance lovers, if you want a quick, light, and sweet read, then this is a book you'll want to check out.

A sassy and fun historical romance made even more engaging by a festive holiday house party as its backdrop. This was my first time reading the author's books and also my first book of the series that just so happens to be book #3.5. Not a problem and from what I could tell, its only loosely connected to book one, but I'm not really sure because it was told in such a way that it can standalone easily. The story was rather a fun surprise since I wasn't expecting it to offer a bit of a mystery blended in with the holiday activities and the romance.

The story opens with Sir Lucien determining that for the first time in years that he will accept his cousin's invitation to spend the Christmas holidays with him and his wife for their house party. For many years he has been leery of all the matchmaking mamas and their daughters, but he has a tendril for his next door neighbor's genteel governess who has decided to go visit her sister. Imagine his surprise when amongst all the guests he discovers the very woman who has been on his thoughts. Unfortunately, others are not so pleased to have impoverished gentility in their midst when there are eligible wealthy bachelors to be won. Not only that, Winnie, who was so easy and friendly with him back home, acts like he has offended her just by conversing with her. What he thought would be easy now seems nigh impossible until someone frightens Winnie and she is forced to turn to him for aid. Well now, this was more like it.

Winnifred Nightingale knows from experience just how fragile reputations can be so she determines to hold Lucien at arm's length even though she can't help noticing how her behavior hurts and bewilders him. Being a guest amidst all his equals who look on her and her sweet, gentle sister with disgust drives the point home of what she can expect if Lucien were to ever pursue a suit with her. If they were together and he was constantly forced to defend her, he would come to regret it just like her own father regretted his choice of making her common mother his wife. All her determination is turned on its head when she becomes the recipient of threatening messages and dangerous attacks. It is Lucien she turns to in her time of need and it is Lucien who shines as her defender and protector against the unknown nemesis and even against a person from her past determined to bring her down. If only she can believe in the strength of his love instead of mistrusting that it won't turn into something like what she saw as a child.

The story clips along with an interesting plot and group of characters even if it doesn't delve deeply into character and relationship development. There is an expectation that Lucien and Winnie are already known to each other and a portion of their romance- the beginning and the friendship- has taken place beforehand. I had to chuckle as the couple startled me when things went from nearly chaste to a bit naughty. I thought for the longest part of the story that it was to be a sweet romance and then Winnie, the tart, snuck a certain handsome Baronet into her bed. Engaging couple and I was happy to see that Winnie stopped with her hang-ups before her resistance became annoying. I was impressed with how the author balanced this and grateful that she gave a sensitive heroine some sense too.

The story doesn't try to be cunning even though it managed to keep me guessing as to who had it in for Winnie. Some of the characters are caricatures or types like the matchmaking mama, the rake, the waspish gossip, the sultry vixen widow, even the poor governess, but no matter, I still had a grand time at the party.

Speaking of the party, there was a fun blend of holiday and wintry house party activities that made for a delightful background for the story. It set a nice tone and allowed the characters to interact without things dragging or getting boring.

All in all, it was an engaging read for a coze by the fire and I wholeheartedly recommend it to those who want something light, holiday-ish with a bit of heat in their historical romance.

My thanks to St. Martin's Press and Net Galley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of holiday themed novels, especially romances. They're just all kinds of adorable. So when I came across this holiday themed novella, I thought to myself "Why yes, I am ready for Christmas." It's October after all, I'm sure Costco will breaking out the Christmas decorations soon, if not already.

When Sir Lucien Blakemore decides to accept his cousin's invitation to celebrate Christmas he does so mainly because his neighbour's governess will be elsewhere for the holidays. Lucien has no idea that the very governess who's company he's missing will also be at his cousin's house party.

While visiting her sister, Winnie attends a house party to even out the numbers. Winnie and her sister aren't high society but apparently they'll do in a pinch even if some guests are put out by their presence. Like Lucien, Winnie does not expect to see her friend at this house party; however, it soon becomes evident that he might be only person she can turn to when she begins to receive threats from one of the other guests.

As the threats to Winnie increase, Winnie decides to ask for help. Since she and Lucien have a friendly history, Winnie decides to approach him with a plan, a plan that involves a fake engagement that will hopefully discourage anyone from further importuning Winnie because Lucien could blacken their name. What complicates Winnie's plan is the fact that Lucien would like to make this engagement the real thing. He's been attracted to Winnie for quite some time and he was hoping to broach this very topic when he saw her again after the holidays. He's not going to turn down her plan, he'll take whatever advantage he can get. What will prove to be difficult for Lucien is convincing Winnie is that the different in their social class is an obstacle that they can overcome. Winnie, of course, does not want to cause future problems for Lucien and would hate for Lucien to come to reset her; she cares too much for him to let that happen. So while hunting the individual that's making Winnie's life hell, Lucien's also embarking on his own plan to show Winnie that they can make a marriage work.

Once Upon a Christmas Kiss was an adorable little story that combines a cute romance with a light mystery plot, something that I've come to expect from the author. All of the novels by Collins' that I've read have featured a mystery element. In fact, I think this author is a good fit for Amanda Quick fans. While Collins is perhaps not as outright funny as Quick, the combination of romance and mystery bring Quick too mind. Collins' creates a lovely balance between the two genres in her novels, and Once Upon a Christmas Kiss is no exception.

Other than the holiday theme, I also really liked the characters. Both of them are just so upstanding, again it's something I've come to expect and love from the author. There's more than rakes in the historical romance genre and I'm glad to read about them. Lucien was such an upstanding guy and I liked the fact that he was simply "nice". He wanted Winnie to marry him but he never went about it in a manipulative way. I simply liked the fact that these two treated each other well and that there wasn't an abundance of conflict between them as a couple. Don't get me wrong, the angst and miscommunication is a staple of romance genre, but it's always nice to read something refreshing and I find that the case with this author.

My verdict on this one: a nice read to get you into the Christmas spirit, a early Christmas gift to yourself, if you will. If you like Manda Collins' style and characters, Once Upon a Christmas Kiss will not disappoint. Upstanding guy meets reluctant bride, a match made.

A Christmas House Party with intrigue, mysterious happenings, a gorgeous "off limits" governess & a smitten hero with a dash seasonal naughtiness! I do love Christmas!

Miss Winnie Nightfall is in HADES, what she thought would be a happy holiday with her sister, Cordy, was dashed as they have been invited by Lord & Lady Hurst holiday party. Both sisters are female fill ins to make the party even with match sets, but that isn't unusual for the local schoolmistress & governess! Sir Lucien Blakemore has decided to go to his Cousin Jem's Holiday House Party, since his friend, Trevor the Duke of Ormond, is loving in marriage bliss, but he can't wait until after the holidays to woo Trevor's governess, Winnie! So at the Hurst's party, we have Winnie the governess, her sister Cordy, a wooing suitor with mega bucks, a scheming mama, a snobby Lady, a scandalous widow, a wallflower, an overshadowed daughter, a smitten Mister who can't take his eyes of Cordy, an unexpected young buck, an unwelcome man from Winnie's past & someone causes all kinds of fuss with threats & accidents to poor Winnie! So Winnie & Lucien have a fake betrothal to work together to find the dastardly enemy & along the way hilariousness ensues, scandalous kisses by more than 1 couple commence, holiday cheer goes on overload & Christmas naughtiness is aplenty! Who wants to hurt Winnie? Can Lucien protect her? When will Winnie truly accept his love? Can a mega bucks Sir want to marry a governess? Can I PLEASE slap a certain female upside her head that leaves a mark?

Ms. Collins brings yet another romance with a awesome House Party, fill it with loveable characters, grants us hilariousness galore, has more than 1 couple fall in love & throws in a little undies melting moves in the mix to delight me & all my romance peeps with this holiday romance! Winnie was a most excellent governess with a steel spine & she didn't let others insults her without some "sickly sweet" comebacks of her own. Lucien was a harder nut to crack, but he seemed to hold a part of himself back & that was him true passion! He only used that passion for composing & Winnie singing made Lucien's passion wake up & commanded him to goggle her up ASAP! This was book #3.5 (I just love the .5 books) of the Wicked Widows series & Winnie was governess to Belinda & Eleanor (hellions of the 1st order) who are the sisters of new reluctant Trevor Duke of Ormond & Lucien is his good friend. I like how Ms. Collins tied Winnie & Lucien's worlds together & how they had a friendly relationship between they, so the feelings were already there bubbling up! Ms. Collins writes with such humor & she never fail to bring me to a full belly laugh & even had my Kindle held hostage (meanie for a daughter) for being too loud with my snorts! My only complaint was more steamy PANTIE DROPPING scenes written in, but Ms. Collins earns my score of 4 fingers up & 7 toes for this holiday romance wrapped in a house party scandalous bow!

What I liked about the novel...

I found this read a quick sweet historical romance novel with a good storyline that was able to keep my attention not wanting to put down until the end. I enjoyed how this author was able to keep it a mystery of who was bothering the heroine. I was definitely a surprise who it turned out to be.

The two main characters were very likable .... Lucien(he was quite a catch) and Winifred had the romantic chemistry between them. However, would he be able to convince her to marry him and even help her with whoever it was that was messing with her? Why was Winifred so reluctance to Lucien? Well, to get this and more you will have to pick up this good read "Once Upon A Christmas Kiss" and find out what all the mystery is all about.

"Once Upon A Christmas Kiss" was a good quick romantic read that I would recommend to you as a good holiday read.

What a fun, historical Christmas story this is. Set in another time and place, we meet Winifred and Lucian at a Christmas gathering in the country home of Lucian's friend. This story is all manners and propriety, or lack thereof. Winnie and her sister were orphaned and left destitute but were able to make livings as a governess and school teacher. While this doesn't make them "hired hands," it does consign them to a lower level of society than their wealthy friends. When someone appears to be wanting to do Winnie serious harm, she approaches her friend Lucian to ask his protection in the form of a sham engagement. He agrees, but wants a much more permanent alliance.

The story is a wonderful romance as Lucian sets about trying to convince Winnie of his true intentions, as well as some other matchmaking going on in the house party. It is also a cracking good mystery as one bad thing after another befalls Winnie. Lucian and Winnie create a list of possible suspects and one by one they are eliminated until only one remains.

It takes awhile for Lucian and Winnie to fall into bed, but when they do they really heat up the sheets!

I really enjoyed the Christmas traditions of this historical romance. Manda Collins has done her research and gives the reader a beautifully described country estate event and betrothal. I will be reading more by this talented author and highly recommend this holiday story in particular.

This book was sweet and full of mischief and I loved it. Lucien I loved him and his nature, "I am shocked, Miss Winifred!" he said in mock surprise. "Though if I were to invite anyone into my bedchamber," he said confidentially, "it would be you." Winnie she is all ladylike and proper but when it comes to Lucien the girl can be a tad bit wanton, "will you carry me upstairs now, please?" she asked as the others noisily made their way from the drawing room. In a low voice, she added, "there is something very particular I wish to tell you." I loved how at times Lucien could become an animal around his woman it showed his passion for her, "I like the sound of that," he growled, pulling her back against him and kissing her in a way that was not quite polite, mistletoe withstanding."

A sweet story with a touch of intrigue and a heaping of romance.

Once Upon a Christmas Kiss was a wonderful story about Winnie, a governess for the wealthy, and Lucien, a lord of great repute. Although these two had been acquainted prior to his cousin's Christmas party, it wasn't until the holiday event that they were granted with the pleasure of knowing one another in a more intimate way. They were helpless against the growing attraction they felt and against the feelings of deep affection they had. Love certainly had its way with them.

I adored Cordelia and her beau. They were lovely!

I am a big fan of Manda Collins’s deft blend of mystery and romance, and I have wanted to see Winifred Nightingale and Lucien Blakemore get an HEA since I first read Why Dukes Say I Do. I’m also a fan of governess-as-heroine books, and Christmas romance novellas are one of my favorite parts of the holidays. Add great dialogue and a mistletoe scene (Did I mention I love mistletoe scenes?) and the result is a winner. Once Upon a Christmas Kiss with its vulnerable heroine, gallant hero, and Christmas house party setting is a true holiday treat and a lovely, romantic close to the Wicked Widows series.

A Christmas house party for the cream of the ton in the country should be fun and merry, filled with matchmaking and wassail, but instead machinations and intrigue join lovers under the mistletoe.
Chance meetings, lust, hopes, dreams, drama and deception with all the Christmas trimmings lead to a house party no one will forget for years to come.
Step back in time to Christmas past and find out if love conquers all, meant to last.

" Once Upon a Christmas Kiss" was a delightfully sweet Christmas themed romance novella with engaging Characters and a secondary mystery plot line, that was hard to put down!

Sir Lucian Blakemore usually declined his cousins invitation to his yearly Christmas house party and stays home since the two thing that he cares about the most to him are his music and Winifred nightingale , but having finished his recent musical piece and Winifred Nightinghale , the governess to his freind and Neighbors children. Winifred is off visiting her sister for the holidays so off to his cousin Jeremy 's he will go. Winnie upon arrival at her sisters is surprised to find her and her sister will be attending the local Lords house party . Fate can be wicked thing because the last person Lucian expected to see was Winnie, though for Lucian it was a very happy surprise.

From the moment of winne and her sisters arrival they have been looked down upon. Had snarky comments passed their way and t has escalated to more outright verbal attracks , the match making mama's in attendance are not happy that both Winnie and her sister are garnering attention from two very eligible bachelors but when someone leaves a nasty message in Winnie's room , she seeks the assistance of Lucien. Lucien has no problem helping Winnie he would do anything for Winnie even pretending to be her fiancé ; but Lucien has a condition he will gladly pretend to be her fiancé if she will consider after the house party making it a real engagement!
Believing having Lucien as a Fiancé would stop much of the character defamation they move foward with their plan and licien moves ahead with his own to convince Winnie to marry him! Winnie tries not to fall even more in love with Lucien but it s hard , she still however believes given her position and his standing in society if they were to make the engagement real and carry it out past the house party the basis would only have more of a field day and the like her parents they would not have a good marriage.
Lucien , finally puts his foot down and makes It clear that if the gossip and slander continue they will have to deal with him and he will be happy to affect their standing in society; but someone is not concerned they ramp up and begin to case accidents that physically harm Winnie.
Ms Collins manages to weave a mystery into a love story seemlessly and keeps your attention the whole time then pulls a total surprise when the attacker is revealed , was not expecting it to be tha person! She then deliver sharp endings for both Winnie and her sister.

3.5 stars;

Let me tell you, this book was a nice surprise-not-so-surprised novella for me, since I've basically been waiting for Lucien and Winnie to have their happily ever after since Why Dukes Say I  Do (book 1)!  As seen in my review for Why Dukes Say I Do, I  quickly fell in love with Lucien's hilariously winning personality and since this, “If you tell me that he, too, as engaged a governess with a bird name I will have to adapt a child so that I can hire one as well,” Trevor’s friend [Lucien] said glibly." I've been waiting for the romance to bloom between him and Miss Winifred Nightingale!

And we finally get that in this cute Christmas novella when both Lucien and Winnie unexpectedly end up at a holiday house party.
"Sir Lucien," Winnie gasped, clearly as surprised to see him as he was her. "I did not expect to meet you here."

That made two of them.

Fate, you old bastard, mayhap you've got a romantic streak after all.

Yes indeed, the old bastard does. Lucien and Winnie are both just such sweet people that you know their courtship is just adorable. And true to Collins' fashion, the romance is laced with a little suspense and mystery! Someone seems to be threatening Winnie and Lucien is determined to protect her, even if that means marrying her (not that he minds!). Winnie on the other hand is a bit reluctant to fall head over heels for Lucien because she doesn't want him to get hurt (but really, you can't resist Lucien's charm). Together they try to oust the villain and along we get a delightful little romance.

Overall, Once Upon A Christmas Kiss is a quick, cute holiday read and a nice addition to the Wicked Widows series. Definitely worth checking out if you've loved Lucien since the beginning or are just in need of a winsome hero and a sweet heroine.

This was one of the sweetest books that I’ve ever read. I totally loved Winifred and Lucien’s romance. It was the most surprisingly good hearted book that I’ve read all year long. The chemistry between Winifred and Lucien was so rich and spicy that you really could see these two characters being together.

I like that the action takes place at Lucien’s cousin’s estate. Lucien’s cousin has gotten married and is spending Christmas at this estate. This estate is very picturesque. It gives you the feeling that something magical will happen.Winifred and her sister are working, but here in this estate are guests. Some of the other young women at the party are marriage-hungry, (which is a typical trope in historical romances). Winifred and Cordelia have some issues with some of the women. The women don’t really like them.

What happens is a bunch of interesting things. I totally loved the chemistry that Lucien and Winifred have is really nice, because they seem like they are opposites, but there is something that keeps pushing them towards each other. Winifred finds herself in a situation that she doesn’t anticipate or like. Lucien becomes her shining knight in armor. He helps Winifred get out of the situation and becomes her fiancé much to her surprise. Plus what develops is something that neither expects because of their past. Her sister Cordelia also has someone that she loves, but is afraid.

I think one of the things about this book that I really enjoyed was overcoming one’s fears. No one knows what the future holds. We can’t let what has happened in the past define our present or future. Winifred and her sister Cordelia really learn to move past their tragedy and trauma to embrace a future with the men they are starting to love. This is an important aspect of the story that I really enjoyed. Plus not to mention that Winifred proves to a lot of people that she is a forgiving soul. Forgiveness is an important aspect of Christmas and what Christmas means for people. I really enjoyed this.

This also had a great love story between two people who weren’t looking for love, but found it in a very unexpected place. The scenes and conversations were lovely, tender, and sweet. Sometimes the sweetest things in life are the moments that are unexpected. Plus falling in love can be the greatest gift we can ever get or receive.

Giving in to requests to join the Christmas holidays at his cousin's home, after years of nixing the invite, Lucien Blakemore is pleasantly surprised to find that miss Winifred Nightingale has also been invited for the festivities along with her local school marm sister. Lucien and Winifred are acquainted as neighbors. Lucien lives in the home next door to where Winnie is governess and the pair have always gotten on rather well.

As soon as Winnie, the governess and he sister, a teacher are introduced to the snooty guests who are all members of the ton, they suffer consistent snarky remarks and snubbing. Lucien will have none of it, and the man's attraction to Winnie finally comes to a head where he can no longer deny the spark that exists between them. 'Tis the season and Lucien and Winnie take full advantage of the mistletoe, so to speak, letting their feelings for one another come to light.

When an ill-bred acquaintance appears to cause trouble for both Winnie and Lucien, drastic measures must be taken to assure that Winnie remain safe. Lucien's protective side fully emerges and he gives in to his feelings for Winnie when he decides that she is all he needs to make his life complete. The only problem is, Winnie feels that she is too far below Lucien's social level for their relationship to work. Can someone please help this woman snap out of it?

ONCE UPON A CHRISTMAS KISS by Manda Collins is a well written and fun novella with story. I adore when such a great tale is told in a novella but you come away completely fulfilled. This is definitely one of those stories. Grab ONCE UPON A CHRISTMAS KISS by Manda Collins, you won't be disappointed.

Sir Lucien Blakewell has been invited to his cousin’s country estate in Yorkshire for Christmas. Jeremy, Lord Hurst and his wife, Helen, have invited a number of friends and neighbors to join them with a total of 14 guests.

Two sisters have been included in the party. One is Miss Winifred (Winnie) Nightingale who is the governess to Lucien’s neighbor, the Duke of Ormand. Having met her before, Lucien and Winnie have developed a friendship of sorts. Winnie's sister is Miss Cordelia Nightingale, the local schoolmistress.

Some of the guests have made Winnie and Cordelia feel unwelcome due to their social rank. One guest, Lord Leaming, is making Winnie feel uncomfortable due to his having accosted her when she was the governess for six months to the Earl of Tuthill’s two daughters.

The days pass and the guests engage in various Christmas activities such as ice skating, sledding, and gathering of greenery to decorate the house. As they continue their friendship, Lucien and Winnie’s attraction grows. In addition, Cordelia finds herself in love with another guest.

When strange incidents begin with the intention to physically injure Winnie, Lucien becomes very protective in the search to find out who this person is.

Without giving away anything more, I can only say that this is such a romantic story. Winnie is a very strong woman and Lucien is quite smitten with her.

This book is due to be published October 14, 2014. I have strived to add some teasers but no spoilers to my review.

This is one of those stories that when I requested it, I wasn't aware that it was part of an on-going series. However, even with that, this novella was written in such a way that it could be considered a "stand alone" story. I was not confused about the relationship between the characters, nor did I feel like I was "missing something" that would have been gained by reading the other novels. Based on this story alone, I would read more by this author.

I enjoyed everything about this novella. From the romance between two people who were so very different (according to the class standards of the time), to the mystery surrounding who was behind all the evil things done to Miss Winifred... this book kept me reading and wanting to see what happened.

I must admit that I was both surprised at the identity of who was behind all of the things that had befallen Miss Winifred since her arrival, but I was also left hoping there is (or will be) a story centered around her sister and how things turned out for her.

Overall, this is definitely a novel that will get you in the "Christmas Spirit", and one that I would definitely recommend for those looking for a quick & sweet Regency Novella.

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novella in exchange for my honest review. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.

I didn't realize this was a novella when I requested it from NetGalley. I keep thinking that I'll like Manda Collins but her stories have never really gotten above "Meh" for me. Until this one. I really liked this story. I was grateful that Sir Lucien Blakewell and Miss Winifred Nightingale were given a really complete back story. I got about 60 pages into it and was thinking about how most short stories weren't so thorough about establishing a prior relationship, and only then noticed this was only 126 pages.
So anyway, Sir Lucien has gotten to know Winifred since she is the governess at his friend's house. The differences in their positions has been a little awkward, so when she's a guest at his other friend's Christmas house party, he's excited that they are closer to being equals.
Winifred, on the other hand, isn't so sure. Her parent's marriage was one where they came from different classes and it ended badly. But when threats start popping up, she's grateful to Lucien for his help. And their relationship has a chance to grow.

A new novella from Manda that continues The Wicked Widow series. We have met Sir Lucien Blakewell and Miss Winifred Nightingale in Why Dukes Say I Do. Lucien is friends with The Duke of Ormonde and Winifred is governess to the dukes sisters.

They meet again at a Christmas house party in the country. Lucien realizes that he wants to be more than friends, but Winifred resists him because she feels that she doesn't belong in his social sphere. As the party progresses their feelings for each other deepen, but then an old adversary arrives and she comes up with a plan to protect herself and her reputation. She asks Lucien if he would pretend to betrothed to her for the durations of the house party. Lucien agrees under one condition. Winifred must consider making the betrothal real and marry him.

This is a very sweet novella with great characters, lovely emotion and redemption. I really enjoyed this book. I have read all of Manda's historical novels and recommend them to anyone who loves a great story with all the wonderful aspects of a true romance novel.

This book is a sweet Christmas novella. Sir Lucien Blakemore spends Christmas for the first time in years with his cousin, and is surprised to find his neighbor's governess, Miss Winifred Nightingale as one of the house party. Lucien has more than a passing interest in Winifred, and hopes to make her his permanently. He encounters obstacles as the stubborn miss feels that his social status is too much higher than hers for a happy match, and someone at the house party is trying to harm Winifred. Before Lucien can have his dream, he must convince Winifred of the rightness of them being together, and stop the individual who has put her in danger.

I really liked the characters of Lucien and Winifred. There were some great secondary characters too, such as Winifred's sister, Cordelia, and her love interest. I enjoyed the storyline, and found the romance to be sweet and tender.

...unexpected gifts at Christmas.

Miss Winifred Nightingale, a gentlewoman turned governess, has along with her sister Cordelia, been invited to a Christmas house party.
Sir Lucien Blakemore has come to the same house party. He and Winnie know each other from Yorkshire and have a friendly acquaintance. Things of course change and Lucien and Winnie find themselves thrown together in an unsuspected manner.
Both Sir Lucien and Winnie are well developed characters that demonstrate both human frailties and strengths.
We have a bad man in the form of an uncaring womanizer from Winnie's past, a dreadful local lady who is a major force, well a bully really in the social circle of the local village, her daughters, and various other house guests.
Nasty and strange things keep happening to Winnie. Both she and Lucien are perturbed. What is happening and why?

This was a sweet story about Christmas, redemption and love. Manda has a great way of writing. Her words just flow and you go along for the ride. Sir Lucien meets a governess he knows at a friend's house. He knows they will marry. Winifred not so much. There are the usual guests who pick on those they think don't belong. Really? Who questions the host and hostess? From there on someone is attacking Winnie with notes and injuries when Lucien announces their betrothal. There were lots to choose from so you can just pick your spoiler when you read this book. It is a short, quick read. I started and finished this in the Dr' s office waiting for my husband. Don't miss this one. Enjoy! I have this book for an honest review for NetGalley.

Love Manda Collins! A great winter read (Christmas is the setting for the story, but not overly harped on), with a bit of mystery, lots of flirtation, romance, and a strong underlying message to not judge others too quickly.

Winnie and Lucien were lovely together, and Lucien is a hero who's probably more in love to start with than his heroine is. I liked that he took Winnie's fears about marriage seriously and didn't try to overrule her with vague promises that everything would turn out right.

The sister relationship between Winnie and Cordelia was well-done and I'm glad that they both get a happy ending.

This is a very endearing Christmas tale with a little bit of mystery. Lucien goes to his cousin's house Party and sees the woman who had already caught his eye, Miss Winifred Nightingale. She is his neighbor's Governess, the woman who has peaked his interest. Winnie needs Lucien's help to dissuade an unpleasant guest who Winnie has had dealings with in the past and also against an anonymous threat. She propositions Lucien to pretend to be her betrothed. He accepts...but with one condition.

Readers will like this short Christmas story.

This is the kinda story where you really are rooting for the heroine. She's down-on-her-luck gentry, a woman of slight station who had to be employed for a living. Winifred and her sister get invited to a house party and they both go since they have no other plans for the holidays. Both of the women are pretty and therefore are a competition for others who think themselves better. However, they both find Christmas cheer and love even with all the obstacles in their way. There are some nasty characters, sledding, holly gathering, and romance neatly packed into this fun Christmas novella.
