So, we start out with Hughie going home. He did not tell his folks, he just up and went after all the stuff with Annie. He surprises them and they are thrilled to have him home. You really see how much they love him, how much they care and miss him being around. We also meet two of his best buddies growing up. One has some sort of condition that makes him and his house just smell so bad. The other, well he is now a transvestite, about six and a half feet tall. They hit the pub and talk about old times. They start ragging on Hughie, making fun of him and all. He gets pissed and all. Hughie is totally conflicted, he missed his buddies, but hated how they would make fun of him growing up. We also see how his mother stays up for him whenever he goes out, eve when he tells her not to. We even learn how he wanted to be a detective as a kid, and how they busted the guy who runs the pub for smuggling in cigarettes.
When Hughie gets mad he goes and takes a walk. He meets this English man up there who is a painter, and wanted to capture the sunsets and all of Scotland. They start to bond, since now Hughie has someone he can talk to who is not from the town. How he can vent how he feels at times when his buddies make fun of them. A good growing relationship. We also get stories of the good times as a kid. For example his dad starts fixing up their boat again, and reminds Hughie of being in the bay. He would tell Hughie that Spanish gallons sank there and there is treasure. Hughie would swim down and would somehow find a pound coin every time. He also loves how is mom is baking his favorite things for him.
Meanwhile there is a new smuggler in town, bringing in coke cut with V, a big time operation. This guy is ruthless and has a sister or daughter who is a giant with a pair of hedge clippers that she uses to keep folks in line that work for them. They are very bad people and all, and we will find out more later. Meanwhile Hughie and his buddies revisit their old haunts and talk about the things they would do as kids. Sometimes this makes Hughie happy, sometimes he gets pissed at them. Just your old time chums as usual. But then things change when he comes home one day and finds Annie there.
She has come at the behest of his folks to try to patch things up. They have some very long discussions on how Hughie wants to retreat inside all the time, but things keep making him face how bad the world is. He tells her about an aunt with a monster tapeworm. He takes her around and she meets some of the strange people in his town. I don't remember him introducing her to his two buddies. But he does take her to meet the English painter, because he is "safe". They have a confrontation where they discuss their relationship and what is wrong between them. Then Annie decides to tell him about her life before she joins the Seven.
Annie tells him how she was taken by foster parents to be raised when she blinded her parents at birth by accident. These foster parents were nice and all, but them and all these others look at kids with powers as meal tickets from Vaught. Not really a family, more an investment in the future. There were kid pageants for super kids. Then there were power tryouts to show they are real superheroes when they get older. Vaught set her up in a team which really did nothing until they were told to do some rescues during a flood, far from the rest of the people while being filmed. That got them noticed and got Vought money. One thing led to another and then she was in the Seven, with the tape that Hughie saw of her "initiation" to them. She gets really mad at him and blows her top, and he breaks down and apologizes for being such an ass to her. Not made up, but back to neutral I guess.
Later we see that Hughie and his trans buddy figure out about the smuggling. They go to observe and they see their smelly buddy is there. Too late they realize they were set up and are attacked by the lady with the clippers. Bobby battles her, and his other buddy is shot by the smuggler. Hughie goes mental and chases the guy down but stops short of killing him. Bobby is OK and in the hospital, but the other is dead. After he takes Annie to the pub and tells her the worst thing he did as a kid. Hitting a dog trapped on a stone in the ocean with a rock. he felt so bad he walked the hurt dog back several miles to the owners. Annie thinks its funny that this is his worst secret, and tells him what a great guy he is. After when they are leaving he gets a note from the English painter with a number and his true name, Mallory, the first leader of the Boys. Then he and Annie catch the bus from his town and he totally breaks down and apologies to Annie over and over again.
