When a modern-day woman finds herself stranded in a medieval world, an attractive outlaw offers her protection in the role of his 'wife', and promises to help her find a way back home. Until then, Martha must attempt to fit into medieval society, avoid the Evil Earl and his minions, and learn how to trust her heart again.
N.J. Layouni has been weaving stories all of her life—even before she could actually write. For many years, she was a dedicated 'closet writer'. As a result, the attic space of her home is stuffed to the rafters with piles of aging manuscripts depicting fantastical romantic adventures. Tales of daring sword-wielding heroes and strong, feisty damsels who aren't too tough to accept a helping hand sometimes.
As well as being a mouthpiece for the various characters living inside her head, N.J. is a wife, and mother of two children. She lives in Lancashire, UK.
Well, this had the unfortunate timing of being read after an amazing 5 star read, it probably only had a hope of paling in comparison.
It kind of felt and read like slight Outlander fan fiction; the author got inspired after reading Outlander and tried to craft a story like it. The world the heroine time travels to is like a medieval Europe but suppose to be a different dimension. I'm not really sure because it is not truly explained. Honestly, it gives the feeling that the author wanted to set it in a medieval time period but didn't want to do research and work to make it feel authentic. The characters and main couple's relationship felt shallow and while this ends on a cliffhanger, I think I'm going to stop here.
I'd like to say a quick thank you to my friend Anne for this rec!
This was a really enjoyable time travel romance with elements of mystery and intrigue. I've read it several months ago and only now did I remember to update, so the details are a bit fuzzy. That means I'm going to do a reread so I can go straight to the sequel with fresh memories of the plot and characters.
While I did enjoy some parts of this story and thought it had great potential, it fell a bit short for me. We never find out any details about how the time travel works, it happens once and that’s it. I was left wanting a great deal more in that aspect. I did enjoy the characters quite a bit although they could have been fleshed out a tiny bit more. To sum it up, this was just mediocre when it could have been great with just a bit more attention to detail and development!
Unlike many time-shift books, where the speed at which the heroine/hero suspend their disbelief at having leapt forward or backward X number of years is matched only by their rapid emotional adjustment to the drastically different living conditions, here we finally get a romance where the heroine, Martha, actually fights her senses tooth and nail all the way, and credibly, goes through all stages of denial, loss, and self doubt that one would reasonably expect of a time traveler, before even attempting to adjust to her new life. Vadim may be God's gift to women (think Aragorn if you're a fan) but Martha's a modern woman who feels things the way a modern woman would feel if thrust into a cold damp medieval cave with a brooding cave man as sparring partner who uses her iPhone as fuel for the fire. Let's face it, this new life's not all gallantry and roses, so she battles against him, his lifestyle, and her own role before finally becoming part of the ongoing struggle that afflicts the community who've accepted her, just as she is. The visceral, yet poetic writing of this wonderful saga will have you reading to the end in one go.
Where to even begin? There is just so much I want to say but don't want to give anything away!! First let me start by saying I was really skeptical going into this story. I've always said I don't think I can get into a book based in Medieval times...how wrong was I? She is a pure genius!! I was hooked from the beginning wondering what was going to come next? She had me in fits of laughter through most of it and at some points I was on the verge of tears and at one point I was ugly crying. I had the honor of chatting with her through out my read and she was worried that there isn't enough steam. I am a huge fan of smut but she had it there without the physical to it. She nailed the emotional on every aspect!! I will warn you that it is a cliffy but oh it is so worth it!! N.J. Layouni is just a flat out evil genius!! You will absolutely love Martha and her spit fire personality, her independent side, and strong will!! I may die a thousand deaths waiting for book 2!! Standing ovation for N.J. for delivering one hell of a book!
Love this book!!! Soooo much! Superbly written, I mean double genius writing here. And the hero- swoon- I'm a huge fan of this time period, knights and battles and castles! The details are phenomenal, the love story sigh worthy. And the heroine kicks ass when she needs too!!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Yes, it has its flaws, but I enjoyed it so much that I don't care. A book doesn't have to be perfect to sweep a reader away. I'm very grateful to the author for the transporting experience.
Finally! A new twist on romance. This book is refreshingly unique and impossible to put down.
Martha, an independent, sassy, foul-mouthed modern day woman from England finds herself in a medieval world with no clue how she got there. Alone and helpless, she runs into Vadim, an outlaw with a taste for revenge and a past that is as heartbreaking as it is inspiring. He offers to help out the lost woman who speaks funny and wears strange clothes. Cold and alone, Martha accepts his offer of shelter and provisions, but there are conditions. For a woman to live with a man in these times they must be married.
Martha and Vadim are polar opposites, and when forced to play married until they figure out how to get Martha back to her world the sparks fly.
Romance, adventure, hilarious comedy, and betrayal: Tales of a Traveler: Hemlock delivers everything you want in a great story and a sizzling romance.
This is a MUST READ!

Definitely a light-hearted, non-challenging, escapism type of read. Martha, the sassy 20th century heroine inadvertently ends up in a non-specific, not-well-fleshed-out part of the medieval world. Not a patch on Outlander! Predictably the first person she runs into is a brooding, handsome, single man Vadim. The story follows the twists and turns of their relationship, dealings with the caricature villain the "Evil Earl" and interactions with the village. The course of their relationship strings out, rather than being an insta-romance, which helps build a little tension, but most of the obstacles are the imaginary results of not bothering to have a conversation and attempting to understand each other. The only saving grace of this book is the smart-arse wit and internal dialogue of the protagonist, but even that becomes monotonous as she continually raves to herself about how gorgeous he is.
If you are looking for a book with a predictable plot, inaccurate history, cringe worthy dialogue, and completely one denominational characters, this is the book for you.
I have to say that this is not my normal kind of read but how I'm so glad I give it a go. Because I fecking love it!!!!
I start this book not sure what to expect or how much I would like it but few pages in and I'm hooked. Everything is just different. The way the author describe it's surrounding, and the writing.. It made you "see" every scenes vividly in your mind. Kinda like reading a movie. A classic movie at that.
Then you met the hero, Vadim. The perfect outlaw. And just like that, there's no turning back on this story and I ended up sleeping at dawn thanks to it.
While assuming it's somehow a kind of paranormal read, it's actually not. It's more like historical romance to me.
What I love about this book is how the authors surprised and caught you off guard with the heroine's responses and how she behaved. It make you laugh and giggle snort at her thought process too. Martha is for sure no weak heroine. I love almost everything about her even tough I questions her decision at times,
Chemistry between Martha and Vadim are strong and it's another great example that a story doesn't need continuous sex scenes to make a connection hot or make a book interesting. This book is doing just great without it and I would probably disappointed if it's just that.
It's a story that would paint a vivid picture in your head and one that you won't forget easily. I love it! And make sure you click or already have book two in hand when you read this or else you might be screaming your head off in frustration.
When you come across a new author you've never heard about, you never know what's in store. First, I love how this story is written, how it brings such clarity to the imagination and by doing so, tells you that N J Layouni has a wonderful gift at story telling. Hemlock is written flawlessly and fluently, keeping pace, not running off in tangents, which makes the experience reading this story so wonderful. Hemlock is the first in this Time Travel series and yes it leaves you hanging at the end but in such a way that you dive right into the next book (Wolfsbane)continuing on where the first book left off. It's a story about the adventures of Martha Bigalow, the heroin of the story, who is transported back in time and meets Vadim, the hero of the story. Every nuance of this story flows effortlessly, delivering the emotions to a modern day Martha as well as to the reader as you will be consumed, drawn in, going along for the ride. You feel what Martha is feeling when she realizes she's in a time that is out of her depth, where men rule, women have little or no say. There is a tender romance budding with many twists and turns with a sweetness and sorrow mixed. Hemlock is by far, one of the finest Time Travel stories written. It's a gem of a find and read. N J Layouni has become an author I most definitely will be following in the future..
I have to say, I was hooked at "modern day woman meets attractive outlaw." Martha is getting over a bad relationship (with some loser who didn't deserve her anyway) and then...*poof* finds herself in another time period, where she is rescued by the oh-so-yummy Vadim.
Not only is Vadim easy on Martha's eyes, but he tells her the only way the two of them can "get by" in the local village is to pretend to be man and wife. Yes, true, and WOW. Way to crank up the tension!!(I guess couples didn't co-habitate back them.) Now, you have Martha whom Vadim finds attractive, endearing, perplexing, and willful...and Vadim, who Martha thinks is stubborn and secretive. And they have to share a bed to keep up appearances!
NJ Layouni has done a wonderful job creating a sweet and hot romance, perfectly paced as the main characters learn to trust each other with their deepest secrets. All the while, Martha has to learn how to do basic, everyday things like laundry and dishes without modern conveniences. OR COFFEE!
And don't forget the Evil Earl, a man with whom Vadim has some bad history. All my favorite love stories have villains who must be stopped at all costs - and NJ Layouni doesn't disappoint!
I loved Tales of a Traveler #1. Time travel is one of my favorite genres, and this book did not disappoint me. It is very well written; beautiful descriptions, believable characters, and a suspenseful plot line. The romance was fun too. It was fun to imagine how I would respond if like Martha I found myself inexplicably transported back in time by hundreds of years.
I loved this book! Anyone who like the outlander series will love this series as well. The writing was well done and the character development made you fall in love with each of the characters within pages!
I enjoyed the time travel concept. The characters are engaging. I liked the cultural bits of unique language. Romance for the sake of it is boring, so I was glad there was enough more to the story to make it interesting. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.
In "Hemlock ( Tales of a Traveler #1) " an exciting and gripping story that blends adventure, time travel and romance, N.J. Layouni transports a modern-day woman into the medieval world of Erde where she's rescued along the muddy bank of a river by a handsome outlaw. It begins when Martha Bigelow wakes up in a dark cave, lost and half naked only to be confronted by an enigmatic stranger who offers her protection and the promise of finding a Seer who may help her get back home. In this story not only does Martha have to learn to fit in to life in the primitive village of Darumvale and stay out of the clutches of a ruthless Earl, but also to trust her heart again.
Reminiscent of Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander", N.J. Layouni sweeps the reader back in time to a medieval society in the village of Darumvale on the cusp of winter where modern-day Martha who's heartbroken by the betrayal of her fiancée is transported. With little detail how this happens, the plot focuses on her rescue by an outlaw hiding dark secrets from his own past who offers her protection as his wife. Emotions run high as Martha struggles not only to blend into village life, to hide her past from the village women who befriend her but also to stay clear of any romantic entanglement with Vadim, Lord Hemlock. Beautifully crafted, the intensity of the story is often broken by witty banter and the sexual tension between Vadim and Martha, two shattered hearts who fear loving again. As events unfold and the evil of the Earl of Edgeway besieges the village threatening to separate the two lovers suspense builds, culminating in an explosive confrontation that begs for a sequel.
Skilfully the author has created characters that are unforgettable, realistic and complex as they meet the challenges that beset a society in turmoil. Martha Bigelow faces the trial of fitting into the customs and moral standards of a primitive community while struggling to hold on to hope of returning to her world. She's fearless, resourceful, kind-hearted and stubborn. Vadim, Lord Hemlock an outlaw haunted by his past is old-fashioned, a gentleman in his manners who's withdrawn and mistrustful of the feisty, self-reliant woman. Yet through all the ups and downs of their rocky relationship their attraction sizzles.
Of the minor characters that add depth and power to the drama Sylvie is motherly and generous; Ma wise and knowing; Seth honorable and brave; and Bren frank and loyal. But it's the antagonists that infuse a cold chill into the mood of the tale . Although we only get glimpses of Godric, the Earl of Edgeway, he tends to be calculating, ruthless and cruel while Anselm his tracker is a deceitful and cunning liar.
"Hemlock (Tales of a Traveler #1) which I discovered on Goodreads/First Reads is captivating from beginning to end. I can't wait to see how N.J. Layouni will develop the plot and its characters in her next book.
Tales of a Traveler: Hemlock (Time Travel #1) By: NJ Layouni 5/5 stars
Martha feels like her life has ended as she knows it. She found out that her fiancée of several years has been cheating on her…and worse than that, she walked in on it. After bumming it for a while, she takes a walk to clear her head. On her return home, she misjudges the walking stones and falls into a gushing river, barely making it out alive, only to not be able to move from the river bank, though she is freezing. She wakes in a cave and then there is a man, but nothing else is familiar. They speak the same language, but it’s all foreign because of the weird way that both of them speak, the words, the syntax. The clothing that each wears, is also odd. As Martha begins to realize the reality that nothing is the same, she hopes that it is all just a dream. But as time goes on, she knows without a doubt that she isn’t dreaming & there may be no way home.
Vadim is an outlaw by the current nobles’ standards. Yet we learn that he is somewhat of a Robin Hood, because he also protects the small village of Darumvale. He’s never wanted a woman because he knows that he can’t offer stability in life and being a wanted man means that his life is in constant peril, as would anyone’s who is close to him. But in order to protect Martha, by medieval standards & from the ruination of her reputation, they must pretend to be husband and wife. Vadim is perplexed by Martha’s peculiarities (her talk, her dress, her ideals) but he is determined to protect her against everything that she doesn’t understand about his world and trying to find possibilities of how to send her back to his world.
Martha has to learn how to survive in Vadim’s world (which could be hard for a 21st century woman who values blunt-spoken truthfulness & having a mind of her own) and he works at how to best conceal her secrets, but allowing her to still be the woman that she is. They don’t count on falling for each other. They are both afraid that the other will leave them, but after spending so much time together and in such a close proximity, it is inevitable that they will start having an effect on each other and fall in love, for real.
There is evilness afoot in this book, as often occurred in the medieval time, and it does have an effect on Vadim, Martha, the citizens of Darumvale & Darumvale itself. No one will be left untouched. It’s just a matter of how they move forward, after hurts, betrayals & deaths.
This book does end on somewhat of a cliffhanger, but it’s more about uncertainty & what will happen in the next book. The 2nd book is out now! These are well-worth the read, well-thought out, well-written and they take their time so that all the little details are included. If you like time travel romances, you won’t be disappointed!!
Wow. This book is WOW! The storyline feels so real, the characters, the action. You think you’re in there, you feel whatever it is the characters are feeling.
We meet Martha Bigalow as she’s taking a stroll then she falls into the rabbit hole and finds herself in another time. Well, alright, not rabbit hole but she actually slips on a stone and falls into the river. Vadim, an outlaw finds her and that’s where Martha’s unique adventure begins. Sure, you think it’s just another contemporary/historical romance. Nope. It’s more because both characters evolve throughout the story. I fell for Vadim just as slowly as Martha did.
Now, Vadim. Oh, that man! If I wasn’t swooning over him or sighing, I wanted to smack him because he was so stubborn and there’s this one scene where I would have gladly kicked that ass of his, sexy or not. Yes, he can be a bastard but he’s a lovable bastard. Don’t ask. It makes sense, once you read it.
“Vadim’s smile didn’t end at his mouth. It involved his whole face. His dark eyes crinkled and twinkled, reducing his usual stony veneer to rubble. It was the brightest, whitest smile she’d seen on a man in a very long time – and he had the cutest set of dimples to go with it too.”
Dimples. Fecking dimples.
“I am a most determined hunter. Run where you will, my love. I will find you.” I’d run toward him but hey, that’s me!
“Without her, he knew he would be eternally lost.” Boom. Done for.
Jokes and crazy fan-girling over a hot character aside, this book is so worth it! I barely did anything else. Just read. Yes, it ends in a way that made me my jaw drop BUT honestly, one could see it coming. There are many more things to come and happen and I can’t wait for book two because well, let’s just say heads will roll.
*I was given a copy of this awesome book by the author herself in exchange of an honest review*
Martha is on a hike contemplating her life when she slips in a swollen stream and slips on a rock, causing her to travel back in time. When she wakes, she believes she has been rescued by a historical actor and slowly comes to the realization that she has truly traveled back in time. Vadim was leery of this new visitor, believing her to be a spy sent by his arch-nemesis, Earl of Edgeway.
Martha and Vadim put up a "marriage" front so she will be accepted in the Village. Both are stubborn and lash out at the other without considering the consequence. For a time, they seem to come to an understanding and actually get along quite well. While Vadim is away from the Village, word comes that Martha must quickly leave or possibly be discovered by the Earl. When Vadim is finally able to catch up with her, he presumes the worst and offends her severely. She leaves and makes a new life for herself and Vidam, too late, realizes his error and vows to get her back. When he returns to the Village before going after Martha, he finds it under siege.
Martha's made a new life for herself in Edgeway and has even made friends with Anselm, who we've learned is Vidam's foster-brother. But all may not be as it seems with Anselm. She learns through him that Vidam was supposedly killed in an attack on the Village. She flees in the night, needing to return to the Village and re-connect with those who helped her when she first arrived. She learns all the horrors that occurred in her absence. She's able to help nurse Vidam back to health.
But lo and behold, they fight again and she tells Vidam she's going back to the Village to give him some space. She's too distracted to notice that things are awry and when she does notice, it's too late. The books leaves off in an okay place, but I'm glad book 2 is out already or I'd be pulling my hair out waiting for it.
This time travel book was divine. I loved Martha and I especially loved Vadim, Lord Hemlock. He was amazingly kind to Martha. He found her after she slipped from modern day back to the medieval period. She is of course confused and is attempting to adjust to this time change. Martha appreciates Vadim's offer of protection. Which at the time can only be provided by marriage.
I also loved Martha's personality. She retains her grit and her modern (often foul) language even in the most trying situations. She is attracted to a man that is known to be an outlaw, yet he treats her with kindness and compassion. She is drawn to Vadim yet she feels free to speak her mind to him. That is something that he is not accustomed to. The comedy of the situation is wonderfully told by N.J.Layouni. The detail of this book are really great. You feel the strain Martha is under as she sets about to adapt to this very different time.
There is so much to like about this book. The characters pulled me in and the writing is so realistic, I truly felt like I was there with Martha and Vadim. The descriptions of the scenery was so vivid, I could picture the area.
So many twists and turns happen in this book, it is an exciting story of love, hate, and danger. Well worth the read.
There is a sequel and I can not wait to read it. I definitely want to know what happened next to Martha and Vadim. I will not tell the end, but there is a twist that leaves me desperate for more. This author really had me enchanted with this book. I did not want the story to end where it did. I have huge expectations for Wolfsbane, the next book.
*A Copy of this Book Was Given To Me By The Author In Exchange For An Honest Review*
Due to a mix—up, computer filing error or whatever the author sent me book Two before this one, so I posted reviews of that weeks ago. Not to worry, though, as I would have read both anyway. They are well worth the effort. It is a new approach to time-travel, with this being a romance, not sci fi. Martha ,after leaving her worthless boyfriend slips on a stepping stone whilst crossing a river in the Lake District in England. After, we are left to assume, knocking herself out and nearly drowning, she wakes in what appears to be a world like Medieval England . I say ‘appears to be’ as, although the geography agrees with this assumption, the language spoken and place names suggest an alien world. Fortunately for her she is found and befriended by Vadim. (He just happens to be an outlaw and in twenty first century parlance drop-dead gorgeous). This the first in a series and you will enjoy the building romance between Martha and Vadim, but be warned that there is a big cliff-hanger in that (i)she does not get home in this first book and (ii) she and Vadim are not together by the end, Martha having fallen foul of the ‘baddie’ Anselm.

Reviewer: Lynn Disclosure: This ebook was provided by the author in exchange for an HONEST and not necessarily positive review.
I love time travel romances, but I am cautious with them. Not too many authors can make it believable and keep the storyline entertaining at the same time. N.J. Layouni does a wonderful job with both.
Modern woman meets medieval man, Martha is feisty and has something of a potty mouth and she isn't going to let any man control her life again, no matter how attractive he is. She gets really ticked when Vadim destroys her smartphone. Then you have Vadim, a hunky sexy man who doesn't understand half of what Martha is talking about and the clothes she is wearing are shocking.
Martha has all kind of theories about what happened to her and where she is. She doesn't want to accept the truth. There is a lot of laugh-out-loud humor in the book. Pretty much what you would expect from two people from such two separate distant times. You can feel the attraction between them that they both fight. Slowly, they start adapting to each other. About that time, the book ends with a major cliffhanger. Should have seen that coming. I got too involved with the story and didn't see that the book was almost finished. Hopefully, the second book isn't to far behind.
When I started to read this book I had originally thought I'm reading something close to the outlander series but different. But I was wrong now lets make one thing clear I don't mind if a romance is clean and there is either some vague sex scene or none at all. So that was not my problem I just wanted to make that clear what my problem with this book is that its like pg. Young adolescent time romance . The heroine was'nt traumatised with the time - travel , she never suffered at all now you can think what am I the bitch cersei Lanister (game of thrones) who wants cruelty. Well I don't care I have read other time-travel so therefore I felt Martha had a easy ride which just felt off to me. Plus there is never any true emotions infact there is no exploration or expression of emotions or anguish. Its all very vague and pg it felt like when your a kid and you know there is a intense fight going on with screaming and stuff then bam adults go quite soon as they see you and then you get sent to your room. That's how vague it was I think this book should most definitely been classed as young adult I'm talking about like 9/10yrs . I would have gave it more stars but just for the mistake that the book is not classed as YA its 2.
Omg I friggin loved this book I read it once with my book group and it was 4 and 5 stars from 7people then after ...I couldn't stop thinking about it so I had to re read my favourite parts so I read the book again it is that good people. It was excellent the writing style was smooth and easy to imagine, she depended on Vadim for everything, but then you see her adjust and learn, she grows her own independence and Vadim wow he has some self control lol he is excellent really felt for him at times good and bad.:-)
it is about romantic, adventure, love, self discovery and it is beautiful and I friggin loved it
the way Martha talks it's how I talk so my group tells me :-) I had to giggle to my self on more than a handful of occasions at her reactions to situations.
