Reindeer Games #1

Reindeer Games

Rate this book
Mmmm, Dasher! The leader of Santa’s shape-shifting team of reindeer is the quintessential elf -- smart, handsome, charming -- and everyone in Santa’s Village wants him. Lon is no exception. He’s hopelessly in love with Rom, but how can he hope to get Rom’s attention? He’s just a plain, ordinary elf, and painfully shy to boot.

Oh, Dancer! Wod is both Rom’s second in command and Rom’s best friend. He, too, is devilishly handsome but in a darker and -- truth be told -- slightly frightening way. At least, he makes Lon’s heart race and his tongue tie in knots.

When Wod unexpectedly offers to help Lon gain Rom’s attention, Lon is completely confused. To make matters worse, Wod is clear that he’d love to play with Lon himself.

Lon craves loves. He wants a meaningful relationship. So what does he do? Keep pining for Rom or play Wod's special brand of reindeer games?

ABOUT THE SERIES
Welcome to a North Pole like you've never known it. Did you realize that Santa and the reindeer are shapeshifters? Did you know that the reason that magical sleigh can get to all the good little boys and girls in one night is because they travel through time? No? Well, come visit and see!

I abso-freakin-lutely love this story!! Gawd, I liked it so much, I might even just re-read it. Soon. It was short and cute and funny. *sigh*

When I was looking at it on LI's site, I had some reservations about buying it because of the whole loving one guy but then ending up loving another. Normally, I don't like those stories because they seem a little too callous to me.. but because I love P.L. covers and Jet hasn't steered me wrong yet, I bought it... Best decision I made all week! Lmao.

You'll fall in love with Lon and his shyness. How he gets clumsy and frazzled when he talks to Rom, the head reindeer Dasher, and Wod, the second-in-command reindeer Dancer. I couldn't stop smiling when Lon kept bumping into them and falling down and embarrassing himself.

I went into this story thinking Rom would be a class act ass but he wasn't. Surprisingly enough, he was nice to Lon and actually told him why they would never work out but he told Lon gently and was all-around nice about it. I loved Wod because although he never said anything, it's clear by how he tries to help Lon get Rom's attention that he really likes Lon, and has for a while.

Jet's writing sucks you in and I loved the different twist with Santa's elves and reindeer shifters. It was actually kinda funny and adorable how Rom and Wod are described as these big, broad elves but they're only 5 feet tall! It was refreshing reading something this light-hearted and sweet. I'm glad the book wasn't as I thought it was and how Lon, although he still loves Rom, figured out he wasn't 'in love' with Rom but with Wod. It was the perfect read for me since I wasn't looking for a big Christmasy book. Definitely recommended.

For spoilers go here.

Isn't that cover just hot? bouncy

I liked this take on the whole reindeer shifter / elf shenanigans, twas fun. The elves were adorably shy, the reindeer were studly and the world building was really interesting. I don't know why I expected it to be just a bunch of jizzmas filth wrapped in a glittery bow, but it was more than that and I was pleasantly surprised. There was an actual story and relationship building to accompany the dirty and I enjoyed the whole thing.

Well that was all sorts of fun! Reindeer shifters, drunk elves, sleighberry wine and sex toys galore. Oh and did I mention that Santa is a woman?! Very eye opening story. And also very cute! It took me a little while to get into it, with names like Lon, Wod, Bok, Rom, etc. – I was getting confused as to who was who. But once I got it, I enjoyed the story.

This is a lovely twist on a holiday theme. Magical elves who work hard and play hard make for a fun romp at the North Pole. Take one shy elf smitten with the stardust of one Reindeer, Dasher add a little shake and enjoy the fun. Makes for a pleasant diversion during crazy time.

Around Christmas I look for light, easy to read, heart warming stories. Not a terribly hard desire to fill since most holiday stories fit that and I was especially excited to see a Jet Mykles offering. Reindeer Games is the perfect light hearted, humorous, tongue in cheek story with just the right amount of sex, fun, and pop culture references that make this very delightful to read. This is the perfect holiday story and actually a really great introduction to m/m for those that are new to the genre.

Lon is a reindeer handler in Santa’s Village. As an elf, he’s pretty average but thinks he’s in love with the head reindeer, Dasher. Dasher, also known as Rom in elf form, is a love ‘em and leave ‘em kind of elf but Lon can’t help falling for his handsome face and kind manner. When Lon is offered help to finally get Rom from an unexpected source, Lon’s pretty confused. Wod, also known as Dancer, is Rom’s best friend and although Wod is interested in Lon, he’s also offered to help Lon get with Rom. How will this triangle end? You have to read to find out.

Except not really since I think it’s pretty obvious from the blurb what happens. Though you should definitely read this anyway as it’s fun, amusing, witty, and totally delightful. The tongue twister names are the only confusing part as the attraction between Wod and Lon is clear and strong from the beginning. Rom is nicely portrayed as neither a jerk nor a saint, instead he’s just another elf with no desire for commitment and many, many admirers. Lon is well crafted to come across as a genuine elf with a crush but easily transferrable when he stops and really thinks about his feelings.

The love triangle, such as it is, is a good element in the story. It adds the perfect touch of romance, sensuality, seduction and very colorful sex toys. What makes the story truly fun to read are the pop culture references and how they’re incorporated into the fantasy story. With elves shape shifting into reindeer and rather unconventional leaders in Santa and Mrs. Claus, the great wit and sly humor really shine. From Peppermint Lane to the Mistletoe and various departments such as Acquisitions (computer geeks), Christmas legends have come to life in a very clever and innovative way.

One of the best parts about reading this is not knowing what would come next, what new detail would be added or reference alluded to. What would happen to the neon blue dildo? The writing is wonderful and the story stays light and humorous. This isn’t the kind of story you worry about taking seriously but it’s definitely one that is a sheer delight to read and you’ll want to pick it up again and again. Adorable characters and a creative setting will have you devouring this novella in a single setting.

So here's the deal: I really had to come back and do a write up on this one just to share my thoughts and get them out so that they stop plaguing my fawking brain.

This story of Jet's is really mint and really hot, but don't even think for one sec I'll want to mess around with something that has antlers :snickering: An elf though? Any fawking time! I do have one of my own, but that's a whole other story that I have no intentions of sharing.

I like the way Jet put this wicked-arse little twist into Santa having girlie bits, but that still won't sway me from taking preference to the big fat-ass, rolly polly dork in red. Mrs Claus? A dude in an apron was priceless.

Never have I read a story which will get your thinking doing a 360 degree spin that'll leave you knowing that just when you've thought you've read or seen it all you really haven't.

Not a Christmas book to be missed out on and a def must read.

I liked the idea of this story and I thought it sounded funny and kinky. But in reality it was cute, but didn't really focus enough on the elf-factor to make a big difference. It was actually easy to forget while reading, that you were reading about Santa's elves.

Jet usually does an almost unparalleled job of making me feel attached to characters in less than 100 pages. But I felt like I didn't really know Lon and Wod enough, and they didn't know each other enough in the time we were given. It felt rushed. I enjoyed them both. They were cute characters, but the 'L' word really didn't feel right at the end. I would have loved to have seen more focus on Wod, and the fact that he had had feelings for Lon for awhile, because Lon's feelings come on awfully fast.

Well, Lon isn't the smartest elf. Sweet one though. I liked that Wod was willing to help Lon, even if it wasn't what he wanted. I do think the world was interesting. Reindeer shifters and all, but Lon was a bit too much.
*****
Lon was sweet, but so very naïve. Like beyond naïve. Well, but that's the thing, that we don't always realize what's right in front of us.
Reindeer shifter. That's a nice twist.
Some sentences had me going back to see who is talking or who do they mean. Just a bit confusing at times.

Lon, an elf and reindeer handler up at the North Pole, is hopelessly in love with Rom. Rom is Dasher, the leader of Santa's shape-shifting team of reindeer. The quintessential elf, Rom is smart, handsome, and charming; and, everyone in Santa's Village wants him. Wod is Dancer, Rom's second in command and his best friend. Wod is also beautiful and could have anyone he wants but he's smitten with Lon. Sadly, Lon isn't too bright and his obsession with Rom prevents him from seeing what's right in front of him. Wod is disappointed when Lon repeatedly declines his advances but he still wants Lon to be happy so he offers to help Lon gain Rom's attention and achieve his heart's desire. Somewhere along the line, however, Lon gets his head out of his butt and realizes that Rom isn't what he wants. Despite the reindeer games, Wod and Lon find their way to HEA.

As you might have picked up by now, I'm not Lon's biggest fan. I'm not actually even a fan. But I digress. This is my first Jet Mykles book and I must say that I'm really impressed with her writing style. I thoroughly enjoyed the world she created up at the North Pole and her twist on Santa's village with the shape-shifting elves. Unfortunately, I didn't care for some of the characters in this book. Case in point: Lon. Didn't like him. He's sweet but fickle, about as sharp as a bowling ball, and too much of a chick-with-a-dick for my taste. For most of the story he's obsessed with Rom and worries at every little thing for fear of how Rom (who barely knows he exists) might take it. After spending a night crashed at Wod's place, something inside Lon changes and he realizes that not only does he not want Rom anymore but he's in LOVE with Wod. WTF?!? I really liked Wod but was disappointed that he accepted Lon's professed change of heart so easily. There was no explanation other than "I want you." Sorry but that totally smacks of "I'm settling for your sorry ass" and Wod deserved so much better than that. I liked the secondary characters including Bok (again, what's with the three-letter names?) and Rom - the end all, be all of the shape-shifting reindeer and Wod's best friend.

Bottom line: a wonderful twist on Santa's village at the North Pole; unfortunately, my disenchantment with the MCs - especially Lon - left me underwhelmed. But I plan to read more Jet Mykles in the future.

3.5 festive stars

I read this and Toys for Good Girls Reindeer Games 2 back in December 2011, enjoyed them and promptly forgot them. I admit it. There are a lot of books I like, quite a few are even also by Jet Mykles so I think I can be forgiven. Plus if I recall correctly the next year there were those distracting (and - to me at least - not that good) Joyee Flynn Christmas books, plus last year I had a lengthy line-up of festive books so. . . .
Anyway, I was reminded of this happy morsel by the release of a third book in the series so I decided to revisit and it was worth it. They're quirky but believably portrayed fantasy settings in which Christmas elves and their world are sustained and somewhat shaped by human belief - thus some become reindeer and another shifts into Santa and they utilise magic to deliver Christmas pressies. But, this is a deliciously sexy story so don't go thinking it's all Disney and twee. It's good - Lon has a mega crush on Rom and Wod helps him out . There is no menage but the elves are very open about sex and sexuality. It's a hot stocking filler (or stripper if you will!) of a story.

An uncomplicated and fun short story with an interesting theory on the reality of Santa and his elves.

I loved the chemistry between Wod and Lon. Since this is a short story, there wasn't too much time to develop the relationship much. Still, it was an engaging romance. I was hoping for a little more heat, but this has a more sweet sort of romance than steamy.

A great way to pass the afternoon with a quick read.

The Santa's village setting was clever, and I enjoyed it overall, but I picked it expecting Christmas smut -- partly because of the previous book I've read by this author and partly because I had it mixed up with a different shape-shifting reindeer series -- so it ended up feeling a little slow during the setup. I really liked the long UST scene in the middle, which is basically what I was expecting the whole book to be, so I think it was just a matter of skewed expectations.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.75 stars

This book was mostly just a whole lot of fun. The scene is quickly set with elves living in a village in another realm. Forget what you think Santa or his reindeers really look like as these are magical shifters that can also traverse and bend time.

Lon is one of the smallest elves and he gets to be up close with the other elves as they shift. He has become so fixated on Rom and getting his attention, but the elves are not a monogamous group and Lon really wants something more than one night.

The story is told solely from Lon’s perspective and he is fun, cute, and quirky. The pacing of the story was well played in the beginning, but then I really could have used more from Lon and then really something from Wod. I needed to understand Wod’s motivation better as there was truly no insight given. And, without giving the ending away, Lon’s feelings change so quickly and there is not enough time in this book to devote to it. I also could have used more time on their magic and the village they live in as it was a clever scene. The ending leaves the characters in a good moment, but their future is not clear.

The entire concept underlying Reindeer Games is unique and very creative. The magic, the time travel, the shape-shifting, the detailed descriptions of the village...Jet did an outstanding job of building this world. I have not read her Dark Elves series, but sensed Wod had some ties to a pre-established race of elves. So perhaps there was some additional richness of detail for those who have read Dark Elves.

The dynamic between Wod and Lon is quintessential Jet Mykles. Both heroes are beautiful. Wod is big, strong and dominant. Lon is small, pretty and very willing to give himself to an elf that will love him. Yaoi fans will particularly enjoy this dynamic! Given the length of the book, relationship development was somewhat limited. Along those lines, my only problem with the story was having the "L" word come up between two elves who have been together as a couple for a very brief time. Then again, it's Christmas, so why not?

Reindeer Games is a very whimsical story. Think of it as a sexy, hot, often funny Christmas "fantasy". It is a must read for Jet Mykles fans. Also highly recommended for m/m fans in general, particularly those who desperately need a good dose of Christmas spirit!

I love Jet's stories, and this one didn't dissapoint. Jet Mykles Heaven Sent series were some of the first eNovels I ever read, and ever since, every book has been held up and compared to these, including everything else Jet has written. When it comes to Reindeer Games, this was a fun, cute, shorter story about Wod, or the reindeer Dancer, who is secretly lusting after Lon, one of the reindeer handlers. Unfortunately for Wod, Lon is lusting after Rom, or Dasher, the head reindeer, believing himself in love.

Things don't go quite to plan when Lon's mate in acquisitions, Bok, steps up, offering Lon a dildo the colour of Roms hair and telling him to 'go for it'. Lon tries to take the advice with disastrous results, before finally coming to his senses and realising what was there all along. With all of the usual fun, love and laughter you have come to expect of Jet's novels, as well as the truly unique way Jet has of creating fleshy, believable characters, this story is definitely one you will want to add to your collection this Christmas. I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

3 1/2 stars rounded to 4

A cute, short read that explores the realm in which Santa, along with the reindeer and elves, live, work and play. This is the story of Lon, an elf who works with the reindeer elves, who's infatuation with Rom aka Dasher is blinding him to what's right before his eyes. Wod, aka Dancer, likes Lon but knows that Lon is crushing on Rom.

Lon has choices to make and Wod is happy to help him find his way.

I never would've thought I'd go for reindeer shifters and a Santa's workshop theme, but I love the magical world Jet created for this too quick read. From the acquisition elves being computer geeks who could procure special (aka sex) toys for the other residents of Santa's Village to Santa and the reindeer shifting in a magical cloud of snow, this was full of cute little extras that enhanced the overall setting.

The story itself was full of cute and adorable. Lon is so busy crushing on Rom, the lead reindeer, that he doesn't even notice Lon's second in command, Wod, trying to get Lon's attention.

Really what's not to love about this story? The magical North Pole town complete with Santa Claus Lane. Santa and his reindeer are shifters, the elves don't so much make toys as they find them on the internet and are hunky lead man is a tall dark and handsome, standing a little over five feet tall.

Lon is a reindeer handler. He is sweet and nervous and looking for love in all the wrong places. He is so fixated on a fantasy he almost misses the reality right in front of him. But once he realizes what he was missing, will he be too late?

A great, short holiday story. Read it! Love it! Merry Christmas!

This was such a cool story. Loved every minute of it and will definitely read it again. The writing was really good, with wonderful descriptions and character portrayals. And the story was so original and highly imaginitive with good, solid world building. Basically, I LOVE this story. IMO not just a great Christmas story but a wonderfully quirky coming of age story too. Sure it was light and fun, but I read it for pleasure and that's what it gave me :) I loved the way the author handled the getting what you need not what you want plot. If you want cute, fun, light and hard to put down...pick this one up for sure!

This was actually an exciting read for me. I mean, Santa’s reindeer turning into hot damn males and females. Whew, and the whole fantasy thing. I actually love the idea.

I also love Wod. At that first instant, I felt the connection that fast. And I can’t seem to understand why Lon like Rom so much. Wod was intense and I really like him.

This was a short read but I didn’t quite get invested in the story much. It was hot and sexy but I guess added that I didn’t like Lon much. I was all in this with Wod.

I really liked this one. It was short but just long enough to give a good view on everything. Lon and elf, has been "in love" with Rom forever,(Rom is Dasher, the leader of Santa’s shape-shifting team of reindeer.) but he is having trouble getting Rom to notice him. Then there is Wod, (Reindeer, Dancer) who intrigue yet scares him, when a meeting in awkward circumstances gets Wod and Lon together, Wod makes no mistake that he would love to play with Lon.

This story is pure erotic romance fluff and I mean that in the best way possible. If you're looking for a hot fantasy between a cute little blond elf and a larger dark elf, that contains little angst and will make you laugh a time or two this is the book for you. I thought it was great fun and unique and will have to read something else by this author soon.

The reindeer shifters are THE reindeer. Santa is a girl! RUDOLPH is a girl! Dancer (in elf form) has sex in a hot tub. This is a funny tale of Christmas, time and realm shifting, elves and reindeer and a really plausible take on how Santa gets all that stuff delivered.
