The Avalon Chronicles #1

Once In A Blue Moon Volume 1

Rate this book
Aeslin Finn had a magical childhood -- a nice house, two loving parents, and every night before bed, a whole new world to explore. The Avalon Chronicles were the perfect tuck-in tale and her parents enjoyed reading the fantastic fables as much as she liked listening to them. But one day, the book shifted tones. The unbelievably brave Dragon Knight and her courageous Prince faced an evil Wizard that threatened the entire land. But before they could finish the chapter, Aeslin's parents left on a business trip. When her father died on that trip, it was time for Aeslin to stop living in a fantasy world. Aeslin's mom never read from the tome again. Now Aeslin's a teenager and living a fairly ordinary life. She has a crush on Michael, the most popular boy in school, and her best friend Samantha loves to trade secrets and share gossip. It's a fine, if not extraordinary, existence until Samantha happens on a new book - Once In A Blue Moon. It's a sequel to the novel Aeslin loved as a child. The new pages catch up on the denizens of Avalon and their miserable eight-year existence since the defeat of the Dragon Knight. Aeslin can't believe it. She wishes she could be there to defend all of the creatures and common folk she loved as a child. And then out of nowhere, she is... Now Aeslin has the opportunity to be the hero she always admired. But Avalon is a much more dangerous place than she remembered and there's no instruction manual she can read to figure out what to do or how to get home.

4.5 Stars. I was pleasantly surprised.

To be honest, I was fairly sure I wouldn't like this book...just from the cover. It seemed kinda...weird for me. The colors and everything...just...not pretty, not enticing. So I put it off for as long as I could. Thank goodness I FINALLY read it though!

Two stars for artwork: Loved it. Love with a capital L! It was kinda manga-ish at some parts, but overall--I love this style of drawing a lot. There's a lot of emotion in expressions and sometimes its subtle and other times just hilarious, but always pretty and interesting to look at. Clothes and hair were drawn well, characters were consistent, and I have nothing to complain about. Everyone looked amazing!

Two.5 stars for plot/characters: Right off the bat, I really got into this book. I just picked it up as soon as I woke up and have no regrets--the MC isn't particularly unique--boys, the funny best friend, a bit selfish, but she wasn't unlikable! If I was in her situation, I probably would have done even worse than she did. All other characters I think will play an interesting role to the progression of the story--the mother's involvement/we'll see more of that knight in shining armor I'm sure/ and all her new friends. I'd like to see how the writers plan to balance out the real world with Avalon. I wanna see more of Meg and MC (I'm terrible with names)'s mom! I'm excited. Is all I can say.

Only reason this doesn't get five stars is because it's not a completely new plot and sometimes the dialogue was a bit, Eh. and I'm very picky with what gets five stars. But please! This was amazing! Can't wait to keep readding thisss!!!

What a fun, awesome read this turned out to be! The Avalon Chronicles Volume 1: Once in a Blue Moon follows in the tradition of some of my favorite otherworldly stories. Aeslyn is a young woman who starts off with a love of fantasy stories and happily ever afters. But after the death of her father and her mother's firm assertion to grow up, she ends up losing touch with her willing imagination. At least until, as a young adult, she comes across a shop with her best friend and ends up buying a book that teleports her into the world of her former favorite story. She learns about her destiny to become a dragon knight, meeting some colorful characters and uncovering new revelations that ultimately will lead her to pursue her destiny.

I'll admit, this story follows in a familiar trope and it may not be new to a lot of traditional fantasy fans, but the fact that Aeslyn is such a forthcoming heroine, coupled with the story's charm and humor to boot, it manages to be an entertaining read. I probably liked it even more considering I have a fondness for stories like The Twelve Kingdoms and Fushigi Yuugi, although I would say that this story is far lighter than the aforementioned. The art and design is charming and takes on an style not unlike many Japanese manga or Korean manhwa. I think this kind of story would be appealing to middle-grade/young adults who want something of a simple fantasy story that transports into the world of Avalon. I'm looking forward to reading future installments of the series.

Overall score: 4/5

Note: I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, from the publisher Oni Press.

Reason for Reading: Sounded like a fun fantasy.

This is a good beginning to a potentially great series. The plot (in this volume) starts off fairly cliched with a girl finding out she is the prophesied saviour of another world. It then continues to go on in a routinely predictable manner, ending with an interesting reveal. Along with the reveal the book also has other points going for it which lead one to believe that this first volume is only weak in that it is setting the groundwork and I am much intrigued as to what will come later. The book is rated all ages and has a main character 16 years of age, from this first book I'd say the author has done a good job of writing something that will appeal to both children and teens. Aeslin is a spunky and smart girl. Right away she stands up for herself and yet she notices what she will have to do to fit into this medieval-style world. I like the fact that her parents are involved in the story and a major part of the plot as we go into it. The artwork is typical non-Japanese manga and tells the story well, the men are quite beautiful without being feminine. The travel between the worlds via the storybooks is one I've seen done before but have always enjoyed. It can provide the opportunity for some interesting situations. The reveal at the end was predictable but sets an interesting storyline in motion; along with finding all the characters likable and engaging, I'm quite looking forward to seeing where this series will go.

Aeslin Finn as a little girl, had her parents read to her from a magical book called The Avalon Chronicles. Now a teenager, Aeslin is about to discover just how magical she and that book really are. Transported to the world of Avalon not once but several times, she discovers a kingdom in need of a Dragon Knight - and the last dragon, Blue Moon, is waiting for her!

But someone else wants to be that Dragon Knight so Aeslin must first make peace with this person. Then Aesling discovers that her mother and father have held secrets from her due to thier past in the Kingdom of Avalon. With a need to be in both worlds Aeslin becomes a weekend warrior with Blue Moon.

I liked the story idea and the characters. Art left something to be desired, as well as some of the dialog. I would like to read the next one though, too bad there isn't one.

'The Avalon Chronicles Volume One: Once in a Blue Moon' is a fairly standard fantasy comic/manga.

Aeslin Finn is a modern day teenage girl who, due to a childhood tragedy, had given up on fairy tales and fantasy. Reality is not what she thought it was, however, as one day with a school friend, Meg, she stumbles upon an old fantasy book (a sequel, actually) which portals her into another world, Avalon. Inside the fantasy story she'd loved as a little girl, Aeslin discovers that she is a chosen one (!!!I am shock!!!) - not only that, but a princess (!!!!!!!!) - who must live up to her destiny as a hero, and defeat the warlord tyrant Khrom.

There is a lot more to add, such as Aeslin's bereaved politician mother hiding far more than she is letting on, but that is the knight template plot in a nutshell.

I'll say that if you like Isekai anime with a female protagonist (who is ALWAYS in a school uniform), such as 'Inuyasha', 'Fushigi Yūgi', 'Magic Knight Rayearth', 'The Vision of Escaflowne', and 'The Twelve Kingdoms', then this little medieval fantasy portal land comic might become a gem for you. It also reminds me strongly of DC's New 52 'Amethyst' reboot, one reason being the blonde princess warrior mother-and-daughter bonding, and 'The Neverending Story', with the entering-a-fantasy-world-through-a-storybook motif.

Regardless of what other franchises it reminds you of, 'The Avalon Chronicles' is enjoyable on its own. It's far from perfect. It has a few pacing issues, and rushed character development issues. It's not in colour, like a manga, and this made some of the characters indistinguishable to me. It's an unfinished story as the first volume. It also plays the destiny vs choice and free will trope which leans heavily on the destiny side of the argument, which is frustrating. But it might be subverted in future stories.

'The Avalon Chronicles' contains elements in fantasy with female leads that I do like. There's girl friendships and support (Aeslin and Meg), a strong mother and daughter relationship and dynamic (I love that Aeslin's mother Laura is actually involved in the plot and her life), and the fact that the modern teenage girl is not the only female in the story. Apart from Laura, another important lady in Avalon is the badass Cassidy, who wishes to be a knight, but is not allowed because she's a girl...even though Avalon's revered chosen one, the Dragon Knight, has always been a girl. Because sexism and logic don't mix, and they never have even in medieval settings. Plus, fantasy with dragons and all that.

Cassidy and Aeslin have an interesting hate-to-rivals-to-begrudging-partners relationship. Meg might not be Aeslin's only girl-friend.

'The Avalon Chronicles' is funny and self-aware, as well. There are occasional pop culture references, and plays being performed in Avalon as political satire against a tyrannical overlord. I am disappointed, however, that the line 'It's dangerous to go alone, take this!' is not in the comic in any shape or form. It's no stranger to video game references, so huh?!

But a dragon! And a sign that the main heroine will learn sword fighting!

On another note: the cliche of the modern girl wearing school uniform (because skirts!) in the fantasy world is somewhat subverted by Aeslin putting on more comfortable and appropriate clothes on her second trip to Avalon. Intentional?

And I'm calling it now: Will Redding, the playwright of Avalon and magical storyteller of the book portals between Avalon and earth, is evil. Or at least he's connected to the bad guys in some capacity.

Whatever foibles, what an enjoyable fantasy work from the creators of 'Amazing Agent Luna'! a fact which made me want to read it in the first place. I have a soft spot for premises like this one, when they're done well and are full of passion for the genre. A cute and heartfelt storybook comic.

Happy 650th review for me, too!

A graphic novel fantasy, the artwork is cute, but so cute that it’s hard to tell the young male characters from female. The story is familiar fantasy stuff, which makes it quite predictable and exceptionally average. [spoilers] A girl discovers the fantasy land in the book her parents read to her as a child is real when she gets transported there. Of course, the world is in dire trouble, and of course she is the chosen one destined to save it. This feels geared toward teen girl readers, and Perhaps a 12 year old would enjoy it. There’s some cliche romance—the popular jock from school, a knight fighting for the wrong side. There’s some girl power stuff reflecting the girls can do anything message popular when this was published in 2004. I’m glad that movement happened, and I’m glad it seems to be fading because womeen’s abilities are no longer as prevalently questioned.

I think the main issue is that this is volume is just to set up the world. It has a solid cast of characters, the artwork is nice, the plot is a proven formula. But there’s nothing here that really stood out to me. This series only lasted two volumes. I found the first in a used bookstore, but didn’t enjoy it enough to seek the second.

While I felt this was a good start to a new series, it didn't quite live up to what I was expecting. I really liked the premise and the twist regarding the books, but while the beginning and ending went really fast for me, the middle dragged a bit. I didn't really feel like I could connect with many of the characters and their motivations. Still, for someone looking for a hero's journey type fantasy quest in a graphic novel, they would probably really enjoy it. For me it was just ok and I probably won't be continuing with the series.

This was really quite cute. I enjoyed the idea of being drawn into a different world. My library doesn't have any others in this series, and I didn't love it enough to go out and acquire the other books (since my pile for TBR is already so large), but it might be something that I pursue in the future. I would recommend it, however, to young adult readers who love the idea of different realms.

I wish this series had been continued! The art is so reminiscent of the early days of anime and manga coming to the USA, it was very nostalgic. I also love that it's not quite like the myriad of isekai that's all over crunchyroll. Here's hoping the series will continue one day!

I immediately connected with the story that Aeslin was being told by her parents, I loved how the artwork shifted form fairy tale to modern day when she interrupted, it flowed so well. And on the list page of what I think was a prologue, or lead-in for the rest of the story, Aeslin learns from her mother that she will have to grow up and that her father died. In the story Aeslin was eight and a half years olds when she was given this news, in the story of my life I was eleven or so. I could relate to this despite the few years difference. The trauma is the same.

The artwork was classic, keeping it to black and white was a brilliant choice by the author. I personally think color would have only bogged it down. This way it was simple, illustrated the story but didn't overshadow it. I loved the look of it. Had I been in a bookstore flipping through graphic novels, as I have a knack for doing, this one would have made it to the register with me for sure. Its exactly my style.

Childhood Aeslin reminded me so much of my child self, I was always wrapped up in fantasy. Its been my favorite genre to escape into since I was a child. I love the idea of magic, of knights protecting castles, of powerful rulers and mystical happenings. I would have been as obsessed with Avalon as she. Teenage Aeslin was just as fascinating for me, the girl torn between the fantasy she loved as a child and the real world. I wish I was struggling with that choice.

I was caught up in the story from the beginning, when the story of Avalon was first being told to Aeslin and her mother suddenly slammed the book closed after seeing a none too happy sight and deeming the book not for her. Which of course made Avalon that much more interesting for me. I had to know what the rest of the book said, I had to know more about Avalon, and what Aeslin's connection was...I mean obviously there was a connection otherwise it shouldn't have frightened her mother so, right?

And for those of you so concerned, there a couple of yummy male specimens lurking about in the pages of this storybook. Definitely worth checking out. As for romance? Guess you'll just have to wait and see.

I have no idea how to convey my love for this book to you guys, it was just...everything I could have wanted. I wish I had all four volumes already in my hands so I could just devour them all in a single sitting...over and over and over again. I absolutely loved this book, its a must-have for my own personal collection, and I cannot possibly bear the wait until the second volume is released. I see a great many re-reads in my future until that date.

Rating: 5/5

Avalon Chronicles Volume 1: Once in a Blue Moon is a graphic novel for tweens and teens by Nunzio DeFilippis, Christina Weir, Emma Vieceli, Christina Weir, and Emma Vieceli. It is scheduled for release on March 21 2012. Aeslin Finn grew up loving a book her parents would regularly read to her, The Avalon Chronicles. However, when her father died the fairy tales were put away and Aeslin and her mother tried to move forward in the real world. Now Aeslin is a teenager and discovers a strange shop as she is walking home from school with a friend. In that shop they discover the sequel to The Avalon Chronicles, Blue Moon. She is about to discover just how true the stories from her childhood were, and that her destiny involves much more than algebra tests and football games.

While the story idea of being pulled into a book or a fantasy world is not new, Avalon Chronicles does it in a way that is still fun/ The artwork is in black and white, which a definite leaning toward the anime and manga styles with some chibi images as well. The feel of the story will definitely appeal to fans of manga, perhaps more the girls than boys. The characters in the story are eccentric and fun, although arts of the story are more than a little predictable. There are several current cultural references thrown in that will make the readers chuckle.

I recommend Avalon Chronicles Volume 1: Once in a Blue Moon to tween and teen fans of manga, anime, and comic books with a fantasy leaning. It is a quick, fun read that might follow a familiar story idea but still manages to entertain.

This is easily one of the most enjoyable graphic novels i've ever read (not that i have read that many but still...).

A combination of magic, dragons, realm traveling, adventure, romance, humor, fights, prophecies and really good sketches make the novel unique. If i'm right, Once in a Blue Moon has been published before as a graphic novel but little differently. As far as i've seen, i like way more Emma Vieceli's art. Even though the galley was all black and white (i have no idea if the printed version is like it), the novel felt simply full of everything. It was actually like reading in color. Like when you read books, and the images in your head are better than any movie out there. It's exactly like that with Avalon Chronicles.

On the story now...love the idea of traveling back and forth in the Avalon and in our world. Loved each one of the characters. The knights, the commander, the writer, the magician, Aeslin and her friend. They all feel so special and different. Like each one has a special part in this story, big or small.

The story can be at the same time serious and funny. I giggled a lot through it, that's for sure. And even though at times can be silly and too girly, i think that even the boys will like it. At the same time is original and something we've seen before and worked out good.

P.S: Awesome dragon is awesome!

If I had a tween girl I would pass this comic along to her RIGHT NOW. Great story with a plucky heroine, but also a deeper message about the importance of story in our lives.

Aeslin was used to her parents telling her stories, but all that changed when her father died and her mother banned the notion of anything magical from the world. Fortunately, Aeslin finds the perfect bookstore, and is sold the perfect book, and falls into another world from that book. Multiple times. So jealous.

There's fantasy and mystery and new things to be learned about parents. There's reaffirmation that girls can do anything they set out to do, that traditional gender roles are bunk, and that stories are everything we think they are.

The art is manga-style - not my favorite style, but also well-rendered and, in this instance, didn't make me want to barf all over the cuteness. That probably sounds like faint praise, but it isn't. The artist actually made me like a manga style and that's new and different.

Great for tweens, but really for anyone of any age who's looking for a great little story and some true entertainment on a rainy day.

P.S. Did I mention the dragons?

Wow – this story just sucked me in and left me wanting. I can’t stand having to wait for the next installment. The worst part is that I am posting this review just as the book is hitting shelves but I read it back in December. It’s going to be a long wait for Volume 2.
Aeslin heard the stories of Avalon as a child. She loved the fantasy until one day her father dies. Fantasy and Avalon are over for her. Years later, she buys a sequal to the book to find it’s a portal between her world and Avalon. Aeslin has a great destiny ahead of her as the Dragon Knight.
There are some twists and turns in this story – some I was expecting, some I was not. I just wish there was more to each novel. Because I have an ARC – I can’t be certain what the book will look like. At the moment it’s a well drawn black and white but I get the impression it will be printed in full color. The drawings are clean so color will only add to the detail. If it stays black and white – it’s still a well put together graphic novel. There are a few characters I had problems determining but part of that has to do with the volume of characters introduced. This is going to be a really fun ride and I can’t wait.

Background: When Aeslin was young her parents used to read her a story before bed, when all of a sudden one day her mom tells her no more stories and that her father is gone. Now as a teen, Aeslin discovers what actually happened, there is a mysterious book that her life is a part of and she begins her quest for her destiny in the book...

Review: I received this book as an advanced reader copy and really feel for the story line. I love anything that involves a book within a book. Aeslin is a teen girl who is learning about her family's interesting and abnormal history, and she is doing this by falling into a story...literally. The Avalon Chronicles Vol.1 is her first adventure to Avalon and it is easy to read, action packed, and the illustrations are beautiful and detailed. Aeslin is a wonderful character to follow and even though there is only a little dialogue we begin to learn a lot about the other characters in the story as well, Cassidy and Will.

Definitely recommend for all ages, esp. if you like graphic novels.

i read this graphic novel in about half an hour at work today. it’s done in sort of a manga style of artwork, but the book is oriented left to right like a western-style book. in it, aeslin is the main character. she’s a high school (?) age student in modern day world who gets sucked into a book to fulfill her destiny and save the people in the book. it seems to be the very beginning of what could be a very long story, but this is only volume one and it was written in 2004, so… anyway, it was an enjoyable easy read and i even laughed out loud once. it’s very clean and safe for any age reader (i think she might say “dammit” once, but that’s about it.).

This one was okay. For a fantasy it fit well in the genre, but there wasn't much of anything innovative about it. And the adviser guy was too obvious about being a traitor. I refuse to believe that the people around him would be blind to his treachery.

There isn't much on-screen violence, though there is implied death of a father . There isn't any language that I remember. There isn't any sex aside from Aislinn lusting after another teen, the way teens do...

I first bought this for my library's YA collection in 2004. It was surprisingly popular, and almost constantly checked-out over the next five years until it finally fell apart from heavy use. I was glad to see it reprinted (with a better cover in my opinion).

It's a solid all-ages fantasy story with a plucky heroine that will appeal to young fantasy & manga fans and dragon-lovers. I hope this time the series is continued and we'll see a second edition.

I'm disappointed that this series hasn't continued since I read the first work.

The story is like a blast to the past. A magic book that teleports the chosen one between this world and another. The chosen one has a dragon (which, I must say, is EPIC). A prince, a dark lord. It's almost like reading something by Dianna Wynne Jones. :D

This was rather good the only reason its not five stars is because its was only good.
The story was interesting and looks promising and the main characters were okay if you asked me in a week I don't think I'd remember any of their names, but then its only the first volume and I already want to read the next one to see how this story develops.

This was pretty good! I love stories like this, in which the main character finds a magical book and goes on an adventure. It was fun. I wasn't a huge fan of the main character, Aeslin, though. She sometimes complained and whined, which annoyed me. Still, a very enjoyable graphic novel! I look forward to the second one in the series!
