Mary Eloise is disappointed that the part she gets in the school play is that of Black History narrator--but two storytellers visit her school and change how she views her heritage.
So happy this book appeared in my life! Browsing the library is something I've missed so much because I pick up things that I would never come into contact with otherwise. This middle grade chapter book found its way into my life and I'm so grateful for that. This is the story of how our fictional grade 4 protagonist Mary Elouise goes from being embarrassed about Black history to finding her place within it and even celebrating herself. I loved it.
The book that I read was THANK YOU, DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR! by Eleanora E.Late I enjoyed reading this book. This book taught me to love who I am. The main Character name is Mary Elouise, Mary was in a play in her school. Mary auditioned for the president was ended up as the narrator. This book was interesting and dark at sometimes.

This book has stayed with me through the decades. The main character enjoys relief from the brutal Jim Crow of the south- her grandma and parents remember it well. As part of a class project she starts learning about the Civil Rights movement and comes to appreciate the difficult and subtle nature of racism and the hard work done by activists through the decades. Great for 9-13 year olds.
✨BOOK RECOMMENDATION✨ - Thank You Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.! By Eleanora E. Tate
I remember reading this book in 5th grade and feeling like I related to a character for the first time. It may seem trite, but around this time every year I always remember this book. I think based on that alone I would say it’s a pretty impactful novel.

A book I read last year, and it really taught me to be happy with myself. I was so surprised at how the characters changed throughout the book, and really saw a new light shed upon their skin color. i didn't realize that people may actually feel insecure with their skin color, even after the civil rights movement.
I read this book as a child and felt that Eleanora E. Tate was killing me softly with her song. She exposed me and for that I am grateful. This book was apart of raising my self-awareness as a child.
