Prehistoric creatures have again invaded Crater Lake National Park …and this time there’s more than one.
DINOSAUR LAKE II: Dinosaurs Arising by Kathryn Meyer Griffith Henry Shore has been Chief Park Ranger at Crater Lake National Park for thirteen years now and thought the days when he’d had to fight a rogue dinosaur that lived in the caves below the lake were long over. Until one of his park rangers, to save a visitor’s life, is in a deadly struggle out in the woods with a new breed of dinosaur worse than the last one. It’s as big as a man, but this one is a young one. And growing. Then more of the creatures begin to show up everywhere, threatening people and destroying the tranquility and safety of his beloved park. A tourist trolley filled with fifteen people is snatched up off the crater’s rim by another version of the younger one…but this one has grown into a giant with fangs, claws and a deadly tail. And this one has wings. Ugly Gargoyles, Henry calls them. For this one isn’t alone. They’re flying beyond the park’s boundaries into the neighboring towns. So Henry, with the help of his son-in-law, a paleontologist named Justin, and a band of brave park rangers, and a few good soldiers, must not only protect his park and his people from monsters once more but find their lair and destroy it and them before the creatures kill again. ***
About Kathryn Meyer Griffith 2023 Since childhood I’ve been an artist, and have worked as a graphic designer in the corporate world and for newspapers for twenty-three years before I quit to write full time. But I’d already begun writing novels at 21, over fifty-one years ago now, and have had thirty-five (romantic horror, horror novels, romantic SF horror, romantic suspense, romantic time travel, historical romance, thrillers, one non-fiction short story collection, dinosaur books, and murder mysteries) previous novels and thirteen short stories published from various traditional publishers since 1984. But I’ve gone into self-publishing in a big way since 2012; and upon getting all my previous books’ full rights back for the first time in 36 years, have self-published all of them. My seven Dinosaur Lake novels and Spookie Town Murder Mysteries (Scraps of Paper, All Things Slip Away, Ghosts Beneath Us, Witches Among Us, What Lies Beneath the Graves, All Those Who Came Before, When the Fireflies Returned, and Echoes of Other Times) are my best-sellers. I was married to Russell for over forty-three years; have a son, two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. I live in a small quaint town in Illinois. I have a quirky cat, Sasha, and we live happily in an old house in the heart of town. Though I’ve been an artist, and a folk/classic rock singer in my youth with my late brother Jim, writing has always been my greatest passion, my butterfly stage, and I’ll probably write stories until the day I die…or until my memory goes. 2012 EPIC EBOOK AWARDS *Finalist* for her horror novel The Last Vampire ~ 2014 EPIC EBOOK AWARDS * Finalist * for her thriller novel Dinosaur Lake.

Sometimes life is one happy volume of great reading, made even better because I WON this fantastic adventure!
Kathryn Meyer Griffith’s DINOSAUR LAKE II: DINOSAURS ARISING could make even the most dedicated wilderness buff think twice about a weekend in the deep woods, especially Crater Lake National Park, already known for having had a real, live dinosaur in one of its caves.
This time out, things are even more deadly, more intense and there are more man-eating dinosaurs and they have wings. Park Ranger, Henry Shore is about to relive one of his greatest nightmares and then some when dinosaurs take to the sky in a deadly game of survival of the fittest, or maybe the luckiest or most determined.
Down-to-Earth characters, personal dramas and deadly creatures from the past clash and there is only room in modern society for one species to exist, or is there? Where did these creatures come from? Where have they been for thousands of years? How can humanity stop them as a small group of park rangers and a handful of elite soldiers discover what will and will not kill the beasts capable of lifting buses filled with families?
I almost felt bad for the dinosaurs, but here I was reading from the safety of my favorite chair as I witnessed people who could have been my neighbors battle the unknown.
Kathryn Meyer Griffith has a “down home” style of writing that is refreshing with characters that come alive, once again in another of her dino adventures. Add a touch of Native American mysticism and the sheer grit and determination to keep the world safe without causing a panic and you have some great fantasy reading that is pure entertainment for the imagination!

*I was given a copy by the author in exchange for an honest review*
Great sequel! This one moved faster than the first book in the series, probably due to having less background to establish. A national park is once again invaded by dinosaurs. But rather than one dinosaur like the first novel, in this one we are dealing with several. And...some can fly.
The author does a great job of blending strong characters together with action and suspense. Never overly gruesome but still thrilling. These books really would make great movies! I'm looking forward to seeing what happens in the last book of the trilogy.
While not a direct comparison, if you enjoyed Jurassic Park, you'd probably get a kick out of the Dinosaur Lake series, so check it out!
As much as I enjoyed this book, I feel like something was missing in this one. Book 1 was so action filled and I think there was less action in this one. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the book but not as much as book 1. I love how the author takes into consideration how the dinosaurs might evolve over time. The cover picture really helps bring the dinosaur to life in your mind as you read. Overall, a great story and I can't wait to read the next one.
An awesome and amazing cover to go along with an awesome and amazing book. I love monster books and movies. Not much can beat Godzilla, Sharktopus, Anaconda, Jaws, Jurassic Park……on a weekend afternoon. I would love to see the Dinosaur Lake movies!!! Any producers out there?
I have been anxiously waiting for Dinosaur Lake II and now that I know there is a Dinosaur Lake III, I am even more excited. I love critter books and a dinosaur roaming around Crater Lake is not to be missed. You can read this without reading Book I, but I still recommend reading it.
Five years earlier, Park Ranger Henry Shore had dealt with a prehistoric, man-eating dinosaur. It couldn’t be happening again, could it? He thought they had killed them all.
In Dinosaur Lake I, the prehistoric beasts were in the water. Now, they are flying.
Henry is such a good guy. He reminds me of Harrison Ford. He has that bumbling, innocent and naive air about him, yet he steps up to the plate, doing what needs to be done.
His wife, Ann, has more problems than a dinosaur to worry about. She owns the newspaper, so that helps keep her going, even when she feels her worst.
Ranger Elle Stanton is back, in a big way. Elle reminded Henry of his friend, George. She has a superstitious nature. She is a retired soldier and was drawn to Crater Lake. She is no wimp, so when Henry senses her fear, he listens. I would definitely like to know her story.
George, an Indian friend had lost his life when he came to Ann’s rescue, but Henry remembered something he said – if the winter is mild, like this year’s had been, there would be a reckoning. Could nature be rebelling because of something we did? Some kind of payback?
Justin, his daughter’s husband, works for the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.
The characters will win you over. You will feel their pain, fear, terror, shock and awe. Their hearts are big and their bravery even bigger.
These are prehistoric critters shrouded in mysticism. I have met THE dinosaur and I know his death cannot be the end of it. I am excited. What will the next one look like? Will there be only one? Will it crawl, slither, walk, swim or fly? What if they are intelligent, able to think and respond accordingly? I wanted to know and I raced through the pages to find out.
Thank goodness I don’t’ have to wait and see if they got them all. Dinosaur III is out and I can only wonder where Kathryn is taking this. Could it get any worse? I am about to find out and I will tell you all about it. I think the cover with give us a hint.
I received this book in return for an honest and unbiased review.
Here is a good, solid second entry in the Dinosaur Lake series. I enjoyed the book but is does suffer from some of the pratfalls-from the first. The pacing is still not great, although better than the first novel. I do enjoy the characters and love that it is set at one of my favorite places in the world: Crater lake. This is a fun, mindless read.
I found "Dinosaur Lake II: Dinosaurs Arising" to be an entertaining, though rather in my opinion "juvenile read", but I've actually read far worse.
To be quite honest I read this as the follow up to Book 1, "Dinosaur Lake", which I had received as a "Free Offer on Free Booksey", and I felt a bit obligated to at least purchase Book II, which I did.
Normally I do not read much these days in what I would term the "Sci-Fi: Fantasy Genre" but I needed a change of pace from my normal fare and I found both books 1 & 2 to be what I would class as good "filler reading" (something to read while waiting for a "I've Got To Read This" offering.
While I have yet to review book 1, (which I'll get around to shortly) it too was "good filler reading".
As a final note I could not help but be reminded of an old "B Grade Movie" starring actor Guy Madison which I saw as a Saturday Matinee back in the 50's, "The Beast of Hollow Mountain" about a long dormant "Tyrannosaurus Rex" which ravaged and pillaged the landscape of the "Old West". The memory brought a smile.
Do I recommend it? Well I read. I enjoyed it, so I'll say "yes", though cautiously, and I'll probably read the entire series over time.
Here we go again. Chief Park Ranger Henry Shore thinks its over. They killed the dinosaur and he’s pretty sure they destroyed all of the eggs. But when strange things start happening in the park, when another ranger has to fight off a large creature to save some visitor’s, it looks like it’s not over.
Things go from bad, to horrific when one of the trolleys, full of tourists, is attacked by something huge, like the thing in the park, yet larger, and it has wings.
It looks like Henry will have to do battle with dinosaurs again, and he’ll have help from his rangers, along with some soldiers and his son-in-law.
Winged gargoyles, that’s what they look like, but much larger.
They are breeding. They fly and are no longer confined to Henry’s beloved park. They are hungry and they need food for their offspring. The park and surrounding towns become their feeding ground.
No one is safe.
I couldn’t wait to read this after finishing the first book. I love books and movies about dinosaurs, especially when they appear in modern times.
There’s so many things Kathryn does really well in her stories. Let me explain.
She gives you authentic characters. They have their flaws, foibles. You like them or you don’t.
When the town sheriff scoffed at the idea of dinosaurs, refused to believe they exist even after the town gets attacked, I could picture him. Standing there, shaking his head, a sneer on his lips, a posture of superiority. I figured he’d get eaten.
And this is my favorite thing she does. She kills off her characters. You don’t want to become too fond of them, but with some you will. And just because they may survive a first encounter, don’t count on them surviving a second one. I’m not saying the sheriff died. I’m not saying they all die. But I wouldn’t want to be in any of their shoes when the dust settles.
The author also doesn’t waste any time getting the carnage going. She quickly drops you in the middle of the mayhem and scares the bejesus out of you. The story never slows down. The suspense and dread builds and builds, and knocks you on your butt. You’ll want to look away, but you won’t be able to. You’ll have to keep reading, find out what happens.
Let’s get to the monsters now. They are just that, monsters. They may be dinosaurs, but they’re unlike the ones from history. They’ve evolved, are very different. I like that Kathryn chose to liken these dinosaurs to gargoyles. The first thing you think of when flying dinosaurs are mentioned is Pterodactyl’s. But not these. They are giant gargoyle like things. And they are blood thirsty, cunning, and relentless. They never stop coming for you.
Every book Kathryn writes is like this. She never lets you down. All of her characters, strong or weak, are genuinely written. We may scoff at their actions, but they are theirs not ours. It’s important to remember that.
And the action and suspense are almost immediate and it’s always a mad dash to the end. Usually with lots of people screaming. LOL
I loved this every bit as much as the first book. I missed some characters that didn’t survive the first one. Loved some of the new ones. I know I shouldn’t have. Lots of people die. But that’s what made this so good. It was unpredictable and the idea of where the creatures came from was plausible. That’s what really creeped me out.
This is everything I hoped for from the author and now I’ve just finished the third book. Holy hell, it’s awesome too!
What an incredible read! I read / listened to this book in audio format via audible.com. I always choose the audio books first as the narrators tend to breath life into the stories, thus giving them a heart beat so to speak. This particular book is proof of that. While book one of this series was very good, book two with a different narrator is freaking fantastic! The voices and the sound effects... OMG. I heard helicopter sounds and a dinosaur growl among the many different sound effects.
Here we are in book two of the Dinosaur series by Kathryn Meyer Griffith. In Dinosaur Lake (book one), we read about Harry and Justin (Harry's Son in law) fighting and killing a dinosaur underground beneath a lake in the deep caverns. Book one had earthquakes and lava rivers and was a super good story! Imagine a National State Park have a dinosaur appear after an earthquake! I was so enthralled with this book, I couldn't wait to get to book 2.
Now in Dinosaur Lake 2 of the Dinosaur series, Dinosaurs Arising by Kathryn Meyer Griffith, we have Harry and Justin again fighting something prehistoric, only now they fly! Notice I said THEY! There are many flying dinosaurs in this book and it is 10 times more exciting than book 1 was. I mean edge of your seat excitement!!! In the audio book, there is 8 & 1/2 hours of this thrilling excitement! This book, with it's fantastic new narrator is one of the best audio books I have heard in a long time for sound effects and thrills!
The author, Kathryn Meyer Griffith did a bang up (great) job on this book. The writing is so thrilling, the plot had me from beginning to end (gripping the arms of my chair so many times). This series would make a fantastic movie! The narrator, Dan McKinney did a freaking fantastic job with his many multiple voices. The sound effects sounded totally authentic too! The effort this narrator applied to this book is absolutely awesome!!! Great book! I can't wait for book three to come out in audio too! I swear I could close my eyes and felt like I was listening to a movie in the theater!

my rating:5 stars goodreads challenges :none
what did I think of the story" OMG I loved it, once again a great story that pulled me in and kept my attention just like book 1 did, only this time the dinosaurs are more meaner than before. love the old and new characters that's in the story. a must read.
“Dinosaur Lake II: Dinosaurs Arising” by Kathryn Meyer Griffith picks up five years after the exciting conclusion of “Dinosaur Lake”, the first episode in this series. If anything, with this effort Griffith surpassed the tense and thrilling action found in that first book, and “Dinosaur Lake II” will keep you reading until the final word.
I read a review in which a reader said this book was “just more of the same”, as if that was a bad thing. “More of the same” is exactly why I wanted to read the second – and soon, the third – book in this series. More dinosaurs, more action, more fatalities, more bureaucratic bumbling, and more things that go BOOM! What more could you want?
If you enjoyed the first book in this series, and are ready for another dose of the same, but ramped up a notch, check out “Dinosaur Lake II: Dinosaurs Arising” for yourself. I loved it, and I think you will, too. If you haven't yet read book 1, what are you waiting for?
I’ve only just realized that there are four books in the Dinosaur Lake series, and that I will be reading all of them. They tell the story of various strange emergences from fictional Crater Lake in Oregon. Chief Ranger, Henry Shore, gets saddled with the responsibility of taking these creatures on, with the help of family and military friends. In this episode Gargoyles - a new pseudo dinosaur – appear; fast, intelligent, strong – and airborne – to create havoc inside and outside the park. Author, Kathryn Meyer Griffith has done a terrific job of creating tension and an atmosphere that emphasizes family and friendship. It is a nice human touch to a genre novel. She also makes the predatory dinosaurs distinctly unsympathetic, which adds to the suspense. Highly recommended with roast ostrich and red wine.
It’s been five years since the park at Crater Lake had to deal with dinosaurs that appeared and were attacking people. Now, they are back! But, not the same dinosaurs – these are different ones, these ones can fly…
I really enjoyed this one, as well. There was a stretch in the middle where it slowed down a bit and we were dealing with the head park ranger’s (Henry’s) wife’s (Ann’s) illness, but it picked up again soon after that. Speaking of Ann, I still quite liked most of the characters (the only ones I didn’t like were very secondary), and I was interested in how things would go for them. Also loved the kitten. :-) I do hope to continue with the series (though, it’s self-published, so a bit trickier to get my hands on).
When I first read Dinosaur Lake I was hooked! However, the second installment isn’t as good. There wasn’t enough of the dinosaurs. It was all speculation and then it led up to a huge fight in the last 20% of the book. I wish there had been more attention and more dinosaur throughout this one like there had been in the first. I will read the next one in the series to see if it gets better, but if not I will leave it. Overall the second installment was a disappointing one in the series.
Dinosaurs are roaming the park again in this thriller. Henry has his hands full with protecting the park, it's visitors, and his wife with cancer. Justin, his son-in-law is a paleontologist is helping him find any information about their newest intruders and how to find them. The only problem is these can fly. Can they contain them and destroy them? How many people will fall because of them? This book will keep you on the edge of your seat and dreaming of dinosaurs chasing you.
I enjoy land out of time stories and really enjoyed the first one of this series. I enjoyed this one too but not as much. I think because a couple of scenes seemed really predictable and a bit forced. On the other hand, love the characters still and enjoy the trying to figure out what is happening and why parts. Not to mention the action. :)
Just finished the second in the series. Great edge of the seat cliffhanger, literally. I bought the whole series after reading the first one and am glad I did. Each one gets better and better. can't wait to start the third one. Must read. I'm not usually into thrillers, but this one is a can't put down.
I'm so very glad I decided to give this series a look see! This series is amazing! Keeps me on the edge of my seat and reading way past my bedtime. Book #1 was fantastic and book #2 was even better! I couldn't put it down! I was so glad that Ellie was found! I nearly cried when the dinosaur got her. Can't wait to start book #3!
The story continues. Unfortunately there are new and terrifying dinosaurs. The story is fast moving, A lot of action. This is the second time I am reading the series. Its been a while, but even having read it before I spent the day reading and finished it. On to the next one.
Still another dinosaur story. I thought this book would not be as good as the first one. However, I was surprised that it was great too. Like some movie sequels that fall flat, I hoped that this sequel did not. I am glad it did not. I am looking forward to the next one, but wonder how the author can keep it going. Recommended.
Good character development, thrilling story line. As with the previous one in the series, I devoured, (all puns intended), this book. Now on to the next one. My only negative aspect is grammatical errors.
Enjoyed the book so much. Was a bit like the first one, but new characters and lots dinosaurs, which I can never get enough of. Have book #3 already loaded on my Kindle. Can't wait!
Loved this book as much as the first of the series. Loved that it had most of the same characters in it. Was a continuation of the story. Can't wait so start the next book in this series. Both were a very good read.
I must admit that I think the first one was better, but this one was good. The first book had a marine dinosaur the second had pterosaurs what could the third one hold? This is a great series and I’m starting book 3 now
