This was an excellent book! Just wait until you read it.
The bear friends set off on a dangerous adventure. They will attempt to cross Smoke Mountain. There have been tales about a hunter who kills and skins bears, but is it true? Also, Smoke Mountain has been known for its allusions, and the rising smoke that comes from the Earth. But before the bears even try to get there, they must first cross the Great River. Can they all make it? Or will one bear be left behind, forever?

Mid three stars. This book was okay.
On my reread of Smoke Mountain, I find myself a bit disappointed. So far, in my opinion, the Seekers books have been getting progressively worse. This book wasn’t drastically worse than the previous two or anything, but the character development was, to me, noticeably lacking.
I think my major story issue with this book is that our characters have grown and developed, and now they all feel very similar to at least one other character. It feels like the Erins already ran out of ideas for where to take them next emotionally or mentally. There is definitely interesting story progression that happens this book, like Toklo being taken by hunters towards the end, but that didn’t do much for him character wise. It gave the plot intrigue, but Toklo himself seems unchanged. Maybe the Erins are trying to do it slowly, but I kind of doubt it. Like I’ve said in my previous reviews, they have a terrible character development track record.
Story-wise, this book was honestly less interesting to me than the previous ones. The setting feels underutilized and the ending of the book with the hunters chasing the bears feels oddly rushed. I’m not really sure how to explain it. I liked the note the book ended on, though, and I was never bored while reading it.
Onto the characters. Like I said earlier, many of them feel stagnant this book, so I’ll get that out of the way and say it applies to all of them.
I liked Toklo fine this book, but I don’t have many strong feelings on him. His relationship with Kallik feels very basic, but I do really like his protectiveness over Lusa. I do wish we’d seen that protectiveness more for him with Ujurak, though.
Lusa definitely shines the most to me this book. She reaches a low point about halfway through the book after being injured, and it was interesting seeing a new side of her character. I wish she’d continued thinking about her “save the wild” dream after she recovered, though. It feels a bit forgotten, though I know it comes back in other books.
Kallik was meh this book. Her relationship with Taqquiq in the beginning was interesting enough, but that ended quickly and just didn’t have the emotional weight I thought it should have. For the rest of the book, Kallik definitely takes a backseat, though, which would be fine to me if the other bears were all developing. But it really feels like only Lusa got real focus this book. The only real difference in Kallik, to me, is that she seems more mature and less worried, which makes her more likable theoretically, but really served to make her more boring to me this book.
Ujurak feels forgotten and inconsistent this book. I also just don’t have many thoughts on him, except that I hope this will improve next book when we finally get his POV.
Taqquiq was fine. I guess. I don’t care about him when the story paints him as a villain continually, but he was interesting in the group dynamic at the beginning. I do like that he went to find his own path in the end; I’m curious if we’ll ever see him again (I think we do?).

4 stars. Cliffhanger ending, my kids begging me to get the next book. When I told them I already have it ready, they weren't ready to start it yet because they wanted to talk about this one and share theories and questions with each other. I love how into these books they get and how it always turns into a book club discussion when it's over.

Although I'm older than the targeted age group of this series, I do love the series. I love these little bears, they have become my friends.
I've read the 3rd one in Dutch, just because I found it cheap and I want my future children to also read the series.

THis book is really good, Its about three bears who have to try to get through smoke mountain. I reccomend this book for 5 through 6 graders and has bears finding the place were all bears go or try to go to have a better life./they have hard journeys through the mountains becuase of hunters and other animals . Then they finally reach a place that looks so good they think their there but are they?

ALL I REMEMBER FROM READING THIS was that my favourite parts were the Kallik and Taqqiq scenes. Their sibling relationship was portrayed very well, and their conflicts were heartbreaking. TAQQIQ. I CRIED SO HARD WHEN HE LEFT. Augh. So sad.

It's kind of sad when the bear dies and when Taqquiq (I don't know haw to write it) leaves, but it's still awsome.

It was really cool. So Lusa gets hurt and all the bears think she will die. But in her dream she's back in the bear bowl. Her mother tells her that she will save the wild. Oh this book I like :3

I read this book in two days! Wow, this series is getting so good. I can’t wait to read the next book. What an epic adventure and a fast read! Highly recommend.

I wanted to make a longer review for this book because it deserves it, but after that Red, White and Royal Blue review I'm too tired to do so, hehe.
Anyways, this book is incredible. Every character followed a storyline, but being honest, this book belongs to Lusa. The scene where she nearly dies and how she starts thinking that she's not going to make it, but she ends up doing so. And then we have the scene where she saves the human, showing that she's kind to all species. She was my favourite by far; I love her relationship to Toklo and how much she and Kallik get along, they're sisters to me. No arguing against it.
Toklo and Ujurak are both as strong as ever. Their brotherly relationship is always a treat to read, and I am a firm believer of the theory that Ujurak was sent by Tobi to accompany Toklo in his journey. And poor Ujurak, realizing how much other species suffer and having to live it in his skin, being scarred by it. The Erins have to give him a break for the fourth book, please.
Lastly, Kallik is slowly starting to become my baby. I'll admit, I was really upset when she kept defending Taqqiq, but I get that he's her brother, and she was holding onto the memory of him when they were cubs. Their goodbye was bittersweet, but it serves as closure for Kallik; she can now move on from what happened and live her life to the fullest.
I am in love with this crew and I hope they finally reach the Last Wilderness so they can be happy for the rest of their lives (even though, as someone who has read half of the Warriors series, I know the Erins ain't gonna let them be happy until the very last two pages of the arc).

The writing is great and the characters are interesting, but (and maybe it is because it is intended to be a long series) the story drags on. At the end of the book your arms are aching and worn out from having clung so long to the cliff's edge (by the way, you know you are never going to reach the top of the cliff, right?). But the characters are interesting. What isn't exciting about a shape shifting bear? But, why and how did he get to be like that. Rather than just using the shape shifting bear as a convenient narrative device, maybe tell the story! Anyway, the series started out strong, but my interest begins to wane. How many more books are there?

I really enjoyed this book, I would give this book five stars. It was full of adventure and action packed. Kallik, Taqiq, Toklo, Lusa, and Ujurak were the main characters. Ujurak is a shapeshifting bear that can turn into any animal which helps them get to the top of smoke mountain. Taqiq which is Kalliks long lost brother left because him and Toklo didn't get along. A static character was Taqiq he was always stubborn, and when he didn't get his way he got mad. Toklo was a dynamic chararcter because him and Ujurak became friends, and he eventually tried to get along with Taqiq but Taqiq didn't like him.

I decided to get back to these books to read prior to letting my son read since he’s been going through more chapter books lately. Super easy read, took me 1 day to read. I’ve got to say I’m throughly invested and inspired by kallick, Toklo and Lusa. I’m rooting for them to find the place where all bears can live in harmony together.
It did take me to the 3rd book to realize these books are actually a good foundation for young readers to have understand deforestation and the effects that it has on the local wildlife. Interested to see where it goes

This was a good book especially at the end, but I'm hoping the themes loop back in for subsequent books. I did think there was a bit of a Middle lull that was not great, and the characters didn't hold as well in this series throughout. I liked it in the end though, and will move on in the series with my daughter.

This book is a bit more slower. When Lusa is hurt I was pained so badly. It saddened me when Kallik couldn't maintain her brother, and I related to her intensely. She is my favorite. The whole book is the bears going across Smoke Mountain to find the Great Wilderness, and adventure books aren't my favorite, but I adored these bears.

Listened to this book (and the other 2) with my 7 year old. Can say the same things about this I said about the first 2. Lots of themes of death and grief and spirituality. Not super fast paced but somehow still get invested and want to know what's going to happen to the 3 bears. Can find the audiobook free on the Libby App.

Los the brother and grew tighter as a team. They find what they think they are looking for, but there is another book or two in the series. Almost want to end it here as I worry it will end sadly. But the next book is on my shelf. At least this one did not read like an episode of Brother Bear.

This book felt a little rushed compared to the Warriors series (by the same author). It also felt a bet like a jump into the story, but since I haven't read books 1 and 2 you should not take that seriously.

First of all this book really makes you think. The plot seems simple, 4 bears finding the last untouched wilderness, but it really shows the impact humans have on the environment and how cruel we can be to animals. This book is meaningful, yet fun.

I don't really have a favorite part, but my least favorite part was when Taqqiq left. I wish he would have stayed, and that he improved his attitude so that he could get along with the others better.

Loved the book. I really liked Toklo and Lusa together, they have such a great bond 🐻
Some things are a little bit unrealistic, because I don't think the bears know certain things, but this didn't bother me while reading.

Omg! I love this book! The ending is making me anxious for the next book! I'm so happy for the bears! This book took me a while to finish though. School made me super busy and so it took a while! Great Book!

Auch der dritte Band wirklich super schön geschrieben! Spannend aber auch entspannend zu lesen. Und wer gerne schnell Bücher liest der ist mit denen genau richtig bedient. Die kann man lesen wie am Fließband!

Great read. I enjoyed Ms. Hunter utilizing the animals and how bears think and feel in the wild. The use of the different types bears is like diversity and inclusion in the bear community. I am not sure if that was her plan but like the idea. I look forward to the next book in this series
