Aw, this was really cute!
A scholar is trying to uncover the mystery of a missing monarch from years ago. There’s a sweet librarian who helps her with research😉
There was deep faith content, super sweet romance, and strong character development.
I recommend as a solid Christmas book option!

This wasn’t what I was expecting. I thought it would be dual-time period and go back and forth for the historical element, when it was actually just a modern-day setting with Ellie trying to figure out the mystery. It definitely had the Hallmark-storyline with the prince falling for the American, the wonderful library academia vibes, and great faith content. But it also had a more sensitive message because of Ellie’s major insecurities in herself.
I’ll admit that shortly into reading this book and seeing her lack of confidence and lack of interest in her Bible, I was concerned that the male lead would swoop in and rescue her (which is something I’ve seen a lot in Christian Fiction). I was pleasantly surprised that did majorly not happen—there’s a bit of it at the end with him commenting on loving her curves—and was overall heartened by the lack of that element and seeing her journey of faith in this book.
At the risk of sounding unfeeling and harsh, I also must admit that I grew tired of Ellie’s woes about her insecurities, physical appearance, and how she’s “just a scholar”. This is rehashed and rehashed again and again which made the book feel so slooooooow to me. I would usually fly through this kind of plotline, but because of the lack of interest at times and the constant repetition, it dragged. I know that some truths will just not stick to our mind, and we have to repeat and repeat them to get it to stick, but it felt redundant at times with Ellie. She was often comparing herself to others around her and my heart hurt for her.
That said, the faith content was great, and it truly was the main focus of the book—let’s say 50% romance and then split the remaining half between the romance and the mystery of the queen? So, it was nice to see the faith content and discussions and lots of Scriptures, but at the same time, it also got to be repetitive quickly.
Besides the faith content, this book went just about as I thought it would—particularly with the missing queen (called it early on) and the romance—Ellie was really oblivious to who the handsome guy in the library was. She reacted just as well to the news as I expected her to (so not well at all) and when a certain other common trope (another woman) came into play, I was a little annoyed.
Final verdict? This was a pretty clean, faith heavy book. I liked some aspects of it, but I do think it could have been at least a hundred pages shorter. For teen readers, I would say it would be better for those who struggle with their insecurities like Ellie did, particularly about her outward appearance and finding her identity in Christ. It’s clean enough for younger girls/teens, but because of her lack of self-confidence and thinking about her flaws often, I wouldn’t want a younger girl to then notice these things about themselves if they hadn’t already been aware of it.

What a tremendous book.....such likeable people, no ridiculous nor exasperating characters with the miscommunication that drives me around the bend! This was truly one of the most Christian stories ever with so much faith content, all woven in naturally. The theme was based a fair bit on not feeling loved because of being unworthy despite the fact which is hard for many of us to accept ; being accepted, cherished, and cared for unconditionally as not one of us is ever actually 'worthy" so to speak when it comes to the Lord. Such pleasant reading as I was curious about the mystery being solved.
The prince Mark was truly a gentleman; how we would all love such an admirable person. It was a totally satisfying read for this author but definitely not the last by her as she passed my "one chance" test hands down and I will gladly buy the next in the series! Well worth buying this heart warming story :)

Easiest five-star I've given for romance in a LONG time.
Christmas in the Castle Library has the depth of faith found in a Michael Phillips novel, a setting rivaling Lori Wick's "royal" story," and the romantic swoonyness of Pepper Basham (but without needing a freezer after reading kisses. Thank you, Ann!)
Seriously, though. I can't tell you what I didn't love about this book. My only quibble is just a personal issue that is no fault of the book's. And I wouldn't change that for anything. It is an important part of the story (and thank you, Ann for not emphasizing it so much that it lost its value and punch). What was it? Well, I guess I can tell (I was afraid of spoilers but there aren't any). Our hero comments that he likes her curves. Seriously, now you know what a prude I am. I'm GLAD he said it... even if it makes me uncomfortable.
What you do get is a story about a brilliant woman who isn't so brilliant at seeing truths about herself. (the age-old story, no?) Hiding in a world of books and the knowledge found there, she tries to compensate for perceived flaws by being smarter than others and invisible to the world, all while hating her invisibility. Again, so very like most of us. And like most of us, this might not have become a problem if she'd looked to the Lord and His Word rather than distancing herself from the only Source of worth that can help.
In the end, you get two flawed people trying to navigate difficult circumstances while also researching a century-old mystery. Beautiful, rich, powerful, and all in a gentle and delightful Christmas read (perfect for any time of the year, though).

What a delightful Christmas novel! It has a little bit of everything: a queen who disappeared into the night, history, royal balls, and deep, faith-filled lessons. I especially enjoyed the growth of Ellie’s character as she wrestled with her struggles around self-worth and body image. Her journey felt relatable and heartfelt, and the story beautifully wove in scriptural truths and God’s Word.
This book offers surprising depth for a cozy Christmas read, delivering hope and encouragement alongside a sweet and tender romance.

I must start by admitting something that is probably controversial and unexpected. Anytime I see a royal Christmas movie on Hallmark Channel, I cringe and turn to something else. 🫣
I am not a fan of royal romances—or so I thought. But Ann Swindell has changed my mind with this beautiful book! 😍
Ellie Sawyer has been obsessed with the disappearance of Queen Alma of Leathersby for as long as she can remember. Now her doctoral dissertation is riding on her solving the century-old mystery.
After being granted a one-month Christmastime residency at the Royal Castle Library, she’s determined to figure out what happened to the queen and bring closure to the people of Leathersby. But her plan is complicated by a gorgeous history-loving castle employee and his unexpected secret. Will Ellie be able to get to the bottom of the mystery or will she sabotage the opportunity of a lifetime because of fear?
This was so much more than a romance. It was full of mystery, depth, faith, and heart. I know when I find myself highlighting a fiction book, I know it’s going to be a 5-star read. 🤩
I loved Ellie’s journey and identified with her in so many ways. Faith was a major part of her story—specifically rediscovering and deepening her faith. There was a clear thread of God’s sovereignty that was woven throughout the pages and it was so lovely to read!
The end progressed a bit faster than I anticipated (and than I typically like), but I was so enchanted by the story that I wasn’t particularly bothered by it. I can’t wait for the next book in this series!

It almost seemed more non-fiction than fiction at times because of the depth of discussions and research the main character took part in but I pretty quickly realized that's just her character. She's a scholar, she thinks things through deeply. I came to really appreciate that.

Charming, romantic and uplifting, Ann Swindell’s newest release, Christmas in the Castle Library, is a must read this holiday season. Upon reading the first chapter, I was drawn in by the mystery of the missing Queen Alma and Ellie’s determination to discover the truth. While the mystery drives the story, the tender romance makes for a pleasant trip. I loved the sweetness in the romance. Mark is a patient, tenderhearted gentleman. As the book progressed, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of Biblical Truth Swindell laced through the story. Christmas in the Castle Library is a sweet, romantic Christmas mystery, but it’s also so much more than that.
I discovered so much about myself while reading the book in addition to enjoying the pure, sweet romance. Swindell crafted the story in such a way that while Ellie fights through her insecurities in the book, the reader can also gently examine their own as well. I absolutely loved the depth and emotion in Ellie and Mark’s story. The lessons unfold perfectly in a way that is thought-provoking without being preachy. Christmas in the Castle Library read like the soft, melodious rise and fall of a a piece of classical music that feels like home.
This book has the vibes of a Hallmark Christmas royal romance movie plus serious themes, enjoyable and relatable characters, and a historical mystery I itched to get to the bottom of. I'm excited there'll be a second book that goes deeper into the second phase of the mystery!
Some of the themes I especially related to were...
🕯️ second-guessing yourself and irrational fear of failure (I had a similar experience as Ellie in university where I was afraid of answering questions in class even though I knew I knew the answer—because I'd end up tripping over myself and saying nothing consequential in the end)
🕯️ life feeling too busy to keep up with your spiritual life
🕯️ learning who you are at a fundamental level, apart from your traits and interests
The romance was quite light, but I loved how it was portrayed! I particularly appreciated this line:
"He wasn't just a cute guy; he was Mark, and the thing about him that truly made her heart ache was the very thing that she didn't even know how to name."
I feel that way about my husband and I've rarely heard anyone else acknowledge it! I couldn't tell you what makes me love him; I just do.

There was a lot of hype about this book, and I’m happy to say the rumors are true! It’s such a good story 😍
Ellie’s battle with her own image was very touching. I actually think most ladies struggle with this in some form or fashion in life, so it was very easy to relate to her (at least for me). I LOVED how the author pointed everything back to Christ. He is our home; He is the vine and our source of strength and acceptance. So good!
There were also many wonderful side characters! Mark (of course, he could be classified as a MC) was such a gentleman. I also loved Thomas the chauffeur 🥰 Delphine was a great friend for Ellie, and I’m glad she gets her own story in the next book.
Definitely add this to your Christmas TBR❤️ I know I plan to read it again in the future 🥰

I love fiction books about books. Especially books about bookstores, libraries, and academia. As a PhD-seeking-wannabe, I love that this book was not only Christian, but also about a library And academia… in a castle!

It's a rare occurrence that I pick up a contemporary book these days, but took a chance on this one.
While it was wordy and could have been shorter, I enjoyed the clean romance, deep faith, relevant topics, engaging history mystery, side characters, and again, geeky scholar stuff. This was not a cheesy contemporary romance in my opinion.

I don't read a lot of Christmas novels, mainly because a lot of them are similar, Hallmark-like, and unrealistic. Sure, I love a fun read that I don't have to think through every now and then, but I mostly enjoy books with a lot of depth and needs-to-be-dwelt-on passages. And then, I saw Christmas in the Castle Library. The cover drew me first. Yes, I am one of those people who are a hundred times more likely to pick a book up if it has a gorgeous cover! Add to that missing royalty and a book about books?! I had to pick it up. And yes, this book could be likened to a holiday Hallmark movie--it's sweet, has a picturesque city, castle, nice people, that Hallmark drama, but it's more. It has depth, it has character growth, it made me cry when a section didn't go as I wished it to, but appreciated how it made the characters grow. I loved the themes in this book of trust in God and love for God, being the ultimate fulfillment in life.
Christmas in the Castle Library is the kind of book you want to pick up and snuggle in a cozy blanket, hot chocolate in hand, in front of a fire on a cold day. And, please, no distractions! This book feels like watching snow fall softly and hearing classical music playing.
My only disappointment with this book was a couple of things written implying that the King James Bible is too difficult to understand, so one of the characters switched to an app on her phone. I find the language of the King James Bible beautiful, lyrical, and more easy to understand due to its precise language, and was saddened to see it portrayed almost as less-than because it uses beautiful language that a scholar who adores studying should find intriguing, wonderful for meditating, and, being well educated, should have no problem understanding, especially since she spends her days with historical research and ancient books.
Overall, however, this book is a beautiful read, and I highly recommend reading it during the holidays.

This book captivated me from the beginning. The story was so unique and different, it was so fun to read this book! I mean, a queen who disappears and a castle at Christmas, who wouldn’t like that! I related to Ellie a lot. She reminds me of myself in many ways. In her growing faith, were lessons that enriched my soul as well.
When I received this book as part of my book subscription, I was expecting a sweet/cheesy Christmas romance. To be clear, there were moments of that in the story, but it was so much deeper than that. There was so many great, deep heart moments included as well. It was a beautiful balance and also a great picture of how we often need to be reminded of things more than once before change begins to happen in our hearts.
As I mentioned, I related to Ellie the most. I have struggled with anxiety most of my childhood. It is better now, but there are definitely still moments I have it. As Ellie grew in her faith in God, and learned so many truths of God’s love, grace, and desire for us. It reminded me of times in my life when those same truths were spoken to me. I loved how the Bible verses were included as well. I definitely wanted to shake Ellie multiple times (IYKYK), but truly enjoyed her and Mark’s story!
Another element that I really enjoyed was Ellie being a curvier FMC. As a fellow curvy girly, it was great to see that represented in the novel. I also appreciated the little aspects of this that were included in Ellie’s thoughts and emotions (Awareness of space, insecurities, difficulty with dressing, comparison, etc). It felt realistic, even though I still wanted to shake her when she was degrading on herself. A great reminder to find beauty in the body God gave us!
Ann Swindell definitely knocked this one out of the castle with this one! I look forward to the next book to find out more! If you enjoy deep faith elements, romance, slight mystery, then this book is definitely for you!

I'm so glad I picked up this book. What a beautiful and heartwarming story! I started it hoping to be entertained, but as I got to know Ellie, I felt a deep connection to her. I found myself cheering her on, but also relating to her fears. I appreciated the messages of hope and faith woven throughout the book. Mark was charming and such a sweetheart. He and Ellie were such an adorable couple. I simply loved this book and can't wait until the next one!

I adored this book. I was hooked from the title and the story did not disappoint. I loved how faith so was effortlessly interwoven into the story, and that the conflict was natural and not highly dramatized as it can be in a romance book. Watching Ellie's faith journey in this beautiful setting of a castle and the castle grounds was inspiring. I could relate to Ellie in so many ways and this book spoke to me. It always amazes me, the ways in which God can use anything to help us work through things and draw closer to Him.
I loved the way Mark and Ellie interacted and how he treated her. I also really got into the mystery side and was so curious about what happened to the queen they were researching. I can't wait to continue finding out more about the previous queen and following the characters into the next installment of the series. Such a wonderful book. Highly recommend.

I knew I wanted to read Christmas in the Castle Library as soon as I laid eyes on that cove, and I had a feeling I would love the story too. I mean, c’mon. Christmas? A castle? A LIBRARY in the castle? Sign me up! But I had no idea how touching this story would be, how captivated I would be by the early 20th century still-unsolved disappearance of Queen Alma, and how much I would come to love the fictional country of Lethersby on these pages.
Ellie Sawyer is a heroine I can relate to. She loves books and research and history… not to mention a good historical mystery. But she’s also insecure about her figure, her talents, and her purpose, and she’s let her work consume her which has left her spiritual life feeling dry and distant. Her ‘pinch-me-I’m-dreaming’ research trip to Lethersby, where she gets to live in the Royal Castle over the holidays and spend time to her hearts’ content in the castle library surrounded by books and history (ahhhhhh be still my heart, I’m drooling), becomes so much more than she ever imagined, and I found her journey so incredibly moving. No spoilers, but let’s just say that on top of any breakthroughs Ellie makes in what happened to Lethersby’s long-lost queen…. and in addition to the swoony romance that grows from her unexpected friendship with Mark (a fellow castle dweller who woos her with the language of books…. again, there goes my heart), she comes to find an even greater treasure during her stay – a closer relationship with Jesus.
The cast of supporting characters in Christmas in the Castle Library is equally as likeable, from Ellie’s BFF and her sister to the Lethersby royal family and staff like Delphine and Thomas. (I am SO EXCITED that Delphine’s story is next!) And of course I can’t forget swoony Mark who won me over from our first meeting and kept making me fall for him with every word and action and gaze that showed how much he valued Ellie for exactly who she is. That list of supporting characters I loved also includes the castle itself, and especially that glorious library. I became so immersed in the setting, in large part because the author has such a great sense of place in her writing. It was nearly effortless to picture in my head, without getting bogged down in descriptors or too much ‘telling’, and I found myself wishing that Lethersby and its Royal Castle were real places I could visit.
Bottom Line: I had high expectations for Christmas in the Castle Library by Ann Swindell, and this debut novel exceeded them all. Ellie’s passionate research into Queen Alma’s WW1-era disappearance from Lethersby captured my attention right away and I stayed fully engrossed in wondering how it would all play out – and while some of it is resolved in this book, what remains unknown will keep me eager for the books that follow in this series. But it wasn’t only Ellie’s sleuthing out of long-held secrets that I loved. I also completely fell in love with the swoonworthy and infinitely tender romance in store for Ellie during her visit to Lethersby… and I was so touched by her renewed relationship with Jesus as well. Swindell’s warm writing voice, her attention to detail, her exceptional storytelling skills… all of that is icing on the cake. - gowns, a ball, Christmas & royal finery
- a budding romance between a self-conscious doctoral scholar of European history and a handsome history lover and fellow reader
- lots of Scripture and a focus on spiritual growth
Mix the above ingredients. Proceed with finding a recliner or a comfy couch, some hot tea, and a throw blanket. Notify everyone that you’ve gone off the grid until further notice 🤣

I'd heard so many great things about this story and it turns out it was all true!
I liked Ellie from the start. She seems so normal and relatable. Ellie has an easy way about her that draws you to her. It's evident when she arrives at the castle in Lethersby, where she needs to finish research for her dissertation. I love that she's captivated by what happened to their queen because she disappeared and was never heard from again.
Lo and behold, there's a man at the castle who seems like he should be able to help! On top of that, he's not hard to look at and is incredibly kind. Poor Ellie can't see herself past events that happened to her when she was younger (something I can still relate to), but Mark sees her for who she is and he has an incredible impact on her. He does have a secret that will change the trajectory of their friendship on an incredibly important day for her.
The hunt to learn more about the missing queen certainly kept me turning the page. I loved how Mark and Ellie searched the clues as much as they could. The supporting cast was the chef's kiss to this story. Yes, it gives Hallmark feels all around, but this is one I'd be interested in for a change. lol Delphine was an early favorite and I can't wait to read her story.
The faith was incredibly strong in this story, and I don't ever feel like I can ever get enough, especially when it's done so well as it was!
I liked Ellie from the start. She seems so normal and relatable. Ellie has an easy way about her that draws you to her. It's evident when she arrives at the castle in Lethersby, where she needs to finish research for her dissertation. I love that she's captivated by what happened to their queen because she disappeared and was never heard from again.
Lo and behold, there's a man at the castle who seems like he should be able to help! On top of that, he's not hard to look at and is incredibly kind. Poor Ellie can't see herself past events that happened to her when she was younger (something I can still relate to), but Mark sees her for who she is and he has an incredible impact on her. He does have a secret that will change the trajectory of their friendship on an incredibly important day for her.
The hunt to learn more about the missing queen certainly kept me turning the page. I loved how Mark and Ellie searched the clues as much as they could. The supporting cast was the chef's kiss to this story. Yes, it gives Hallmark feels all around, but this is one I'd be interested in for a change. lol Delphine was an early favorite and I can't wait to read her story.

Wow, just wow! With this beautiful story, Ann Swindell went straight to my auto-buy author's list. Christmas in the Castle Library is a beautiful story that doesn't necessarily follow the traditional royal route and doesn't have your traditional heroine.
Ellie is a bookish scholar, who struggles with her self-worth. She gets a lifetime opportunity to go to Lethersby Castle over Christmas to finish her dissertation and meets the handsome Mark, a fellow historian. More than that I cannot share as I do not want to spoil anything for you.
This book has a beautiful storyline, engaging characters, stunning scenery, and incredible spiritual depth. I struggled to put it down and enjoyed every moment. It has romance, history, mystery, royalty, and truth. You won't be disappointed if you choose to read this incredible story. I can't wait for the next one.

Let’s cut to the chase. I loved everything about this story and I didn’t really expect to. It seems so contrived but I promise it’s not! And if you enjoy Contemporary Christian fiction with a sweet romance, then I highly recommend it.
Author Ann Swindell does nothing to hide the fact that this is a story based in Christ. It’s not preachy but organic and I really appreciated that aspect. Everything the characters do is based on the level of their relationship with God, whether close or far away. And spiritual growth is evident.
Being a book lover, I love libraries and would so love to spend time in this one since I enjoy history as well. It seemed so real that I’m sure I could visit. The country sounds beautiful but it was the characters who made the story. Strong. Mysterious. True to life. All the personalities and all the feelings were in this book. I highly recommend it!

Finishing this heartfelt book on Christmas Day was truly a gift. As someone who pursued a PhD and grappled with similar questions of fulfillment, I found myself deeply identifying with Ellie's journey. The author beautifully captures the internal struggle between academic ambitions and finding true purpose. The spiritual undertones resonated deeply with my own walk in faith, and Ellie's conclusions at the end of the story mirror revelations I've come to in my own life. A timely and touching read that will stay with me long after the last page.

I LOVED IT!!! perfect time of year to read - reminds me of hallmark, but with a strong thread of faith. it was so good! love, mystery, friendship and one of my favorite passages - john 15! well done, ann!!!! already can't wait for book #2 in the series!

This book! I haven't read a book so steeped in Scripture in a long time. It was so refreshing for my soul! Despite this being a fictional story, I found myself being very introspective and feeling God speak truths into my own heart.
Ann has a wonderful way of painting pictures of the world and pulling you into the story that I almost felt as if I were there. I am so sad that it's over, but overjoyed and excited for the next one!

I enjoyed this book so much! It had all the Christmas/castle/library coziness wrapped in flawed characters, a grand mystery, and a deep journey of faith. I’m so excited this is the first book in a series.
