This story takes place prior to the events in L.A. Metro. Kim Donovan and Jess McKenna have never met. They are both successful doctors, but each longs to find that one person to share her life with. In a jaded world filled with cynicism, do dreams really still come true? Maybe all it takes is a wish upon a star...
RJ Nolan lives in the United States with her spouse and their Great Dane. She makes frequent visits to the California coast near her home. The sight and sound of the surf always stir her muse. When not writing, she enjoys reading, camping, and the occasional trip to Disneyland. (from the publisher's website)
Hint of Things to Come This is a quick prequil to Ms. Nolan's LA Metro. If this is how the main book will be writtenI am in! I like the writing and I am all kinds of curious as to what will happen next!
Rate this book, it said at the end! This isn't a book It's an advert for the excellent L A Metro. Could have been the prologue. Cost nothing - so 1 * or 5*s??
Very short story that is only a brief glimpse of the main characters from the novel L.A. Metro (Sept 2011). It has Dr. Kim Donovan and Dr. Jess McKenna making a wish on New Years before they ever meet. The story is only a few pages long and could easily have been a prelude chapter in the book. I was genuinely surprised my public library system had a digital copy. I was even more surprised that I own a digital copy that I got for free by following I Heart SaphicFic. It has 27 pages but only about 7 are the new part of the story. The rest is a preview chapter for the novel L.A. Metro and some ads for other books from the same publisher. Honestly this is hard to rate because if I’d read this first I don’t think it gave me enough I would seek out the full novel. But I read the novel yesterday and gave it 4.5 Stars.
A cute intro to the lives of Jess and Kim. Both doctors, lonely and wishing for more. Kim has a rough way to go with her mom, who is a piece of crap. Trying to shove men on her daughter who has been out to her for years is another level of disrespect and it really burns me up seeing it. Jess at least has accepting family who are respectful of who she is, she just doesn’t get to see them often. She also has Thor her oversized doggo, which helps some but it’s not the same as a partner to share your life with.
Wow, this is a crazy short prequel, lol. I got it free, and even though nothing much happened, it has got me intrigued for the LA Metro novel. Love the fact that it features a Great Dane too... I'd love a Great Dane!
The Wish (L.A. Metro, #0.5) by R.J. Nolan Kim and Jess are thinking about love. This is little more than a blurb. It is good and it did draw me in wanting more. 4-star I would hope the book would be 5 stars.
This is my first taste of this author. Taste as this is a short story prequel to a series. I'm not sure, going in, if this will be a full short story, a scene, a few scenes loosely connected, or what. (oh, the forward, which I had already been looking at, said 'vignette').
This is 0.5 of the L.A. Metro series starring Kim Donovan and Jess McKenna. Both of whom are doctors. (I was going to say that I have no idea why I originally thought this involved the police, but then I blinked and recalled - it's the metro part, just reminded me of metropolitain police, but metro means so many things).
Okay, enough writing stuff before I actually read. Let's dive in.
There are two points of view. Kim Donovan and Jess McKenna. Firs part follows Kim. Second follows Jess.
Time of Year: New Year's Eve - (Part 1: 11:40 p.m., Part 2: 8:50 pm) Location: Part 1: Yacht Club - Grosse Pointe, Michigan, Part 2: McKenna's residence - LA, California
Kim Donovan is at a charity event for a foundation that raises money for children with AIDS sponsored, the event not the children, by Kim's mother's country club. Kim is a reluctant attendee. More because the mother is using the event to push any and all men towards Kim. Mother knows Kim is a lesbian but refuses to accept it.
Kim has blonde curly hair, blue eyes, and just moved back to Michigan 8 months ago. She currently has a lover, but that lover is super closeted.
Brandon is someone that Kim meets at the event who acts as something like a beard, to deflect the mother bringing yet more men over to Kim. Though Brandon himself is already partnered up. With a Donald.
Jess McKenna currenly lives in Los Angeles. Is single. Has a sister named Sam who is a police officer. Has a dog named Thor.
Both are super lonely. And both wish they weren't.
Story is super short and ends at the 37% mark on my Kindle. And is not a short story, but a couple of scenes. Well written scenes, but still.
There isn't much action in this piece, which is somewhat understandable considering it's a short prequel meant to sell you on the whole book. There's a preview of an excerpt from the actual book after the short story, too, but that was just as uninteresting, though, again, that may just be because it's just meant to sell you on the whole book. It isn't particularly promising, though. The content of the excerpt is a classic "date at the dogpark" type scene that focuses way too much on the dogs and not nearly enough on the characters the book is actually supposed to be about. Combine that with the cliche of the setting, and it doesn't do much to draw me in.
The short story itself is very cliche, too. It's the done-a-million-times-before "two people in different places staring out at the sky on New Years Eve both wishing for the one thing they both want at the same exact moment" trope. There's nothing particularly unique about this story except for the fact that both protagonists are women.
There's nothing particularly bad about this story (the writing is decent, if not remarkable), there's just nothing particularly interesting about it either. It's just not for me. If you're a big fan of really classic romance tropes - but with a lesbian twist - maybe you'll get more out of this than I did. Otherwise, it's a pass from me.
In the wish we met Kim Donovan and Jess McKenna. Two women having terrible New Years Eve. Kim's mother keeps throwing every available man her way as she refuses to accept that her daughter is a lesbian. While Jess sits at home alone with her dog Thor. Miles apart they both looked up at the same shooting star and made a wish. R.J. Nolan commented that she wrote this so there would be a deeper understanding of Jess and Kim when L.A. Metro came out. It certainly worked for me, I cant wait to read L.A. Metro.
I read this book few times because it is good review from few people and I liked how they feel each other... I think that's funny what Thor does to Kim and she didn't realize the Dane is big dog! I can tell that they desire something, but how it will be happening next... You find out :)
This was really just a teaser... 10 pages of the story-before-the-story. But it was intriguing enough to make me want to read the actual book, and a unique perspective on what happens before the novel. I appreciate the authors thoughtfulness and approach.
I kinda don't understand why the author wrote this story. It's way too short, nothing really important happens and one doesn't learn much about the protagonists. A total waste of the few minutes I spent with it!
I really liked the intro to this story. I'm interested to see what will happen next with Kim and Jess.
The only complaint was there was too much advertising for other stories following the story. Only about half of this kindle short is about Kim and Jess and their love story.
