Emmanuel Guibert has written a great many graphic novels for readers young and old, among them the Sardine in Outer Space series and The Professor’s Daughter with Joann Sfar.
In 1994, a chance encounter with an American World War II veteran named Alan Cope marked the beginning of a deep friendship and the birth of a great biographical epic.
Another of Guibert's recent works is The Photographer. Showered with awards, translated around the world and soon to come from First Second books, it relates a Doctors Without Borders mission in 1980’s Afghanistan through the eyes of a great reporter, the late Didier Lefèvre.
Guibert lives in Paris with his wife and daughter.
This volume has a lot of family stories in it which gives readers a look inside Ariol's home-life and the relationships he has with each of his parents. I really liked the realistic family drama that popped up during Ariol's birthday party, and I especially liked the father son play fighting in the "Donkeyplane" comic.
This series is such a treat; great for grades 3-5, boys and girls alike.
Man, I love these books, but I have no idea how to talk about them to get kids to check them out! Can anyone out there think of a popular series that Ariol would be a readalike for? I'd call it "slice of life" but I'm not sure that's a term elementary-aged kids understand. Or do they?
