When Marina learned the truth about her past she thought that the drama was over, but she couldn't have been more wrong. She finds that her whole life has been a lie, orchestrated from behind the scenes by her own loved ones.
Still reeling from the shock, she is confronted with even more betrayal, and takes solace in an increasingly dangerous new habit.
After an accident dramatically exposes her secret to the world, a dangerous enemy with evil plans arrives on the scene. Marina's bravery is put to the test once again, forcing her to use all of her new-found skills to protect her family.
I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review. This in no way effected my opinion of this book.
In The Moon and the Tide, things have gone from bad to worse for Marina and Ethan. Their relationship is tested by both new and old obstacles and they spend a lot of time either fighting for their love or fighting with each other.
When they did argue, I never quite knew whose side to be on. Ethan came off as over protective and bossy, but he was just trying to keep the girl he loved safe. Marina has a choice between spending a normal life on land with him or spending and eternal life in the sea with other mermaids and he is afraid that the temptation of the sea is to strong for Marina to resist forever.
Marina on the other hand is positive that she wants to remain on land with Ethan and everyone else she loves. At least she says she is positive that this is what she wants. Honestly her behavior in this book makes it easy to see why Ethan is so afraid. Marina falls deeply in love with surfing and spends a little bit too much time doing in alone or with her mermaid friend Lorelei. Her strong desire to spend time surfing bigger and more dangerous waves leads to several dangerous situations so she came off as more reckless and wild than she was in the first book.
By the end, I decided that neither of them were right or wrong, they were just people and sometimes people disagree. No one has to be wrong. The relationship stuff is handled in a very mature (and by "mature" I do not mean sexual) manner that has me rooting for Ethan and Marina as a couple.
A good chunk of this book focuses on relationship stuff, but it also progressed the broader plot of the entire series. I got some great scenes where Marina let loose and gave into her love of the sea. Like I said, she was wilder in this book than the first, but I never said that was a bad thing. Mermaids are portrayed as being wild, free and beautiful creatures, and it was fun to read about Marina's transformation.
Because she is not a full mermaid, Marina has some interesting powers that I'm not sure her full blooded counterparts have. She has some psychic abilities that add to the drama, but by far the coolest thing about her is that she is a muse. Before reading this, I knew muses inspired artist to be more artistic, but the power they posses in The Moon and the Tide is stronger and cooler.
Marina is more powerful than your average half mermaid so her ability to inspire people is stronger and more dangerous. She could help a hero save the world just as easily as she could help a villain burn the world to the ground. And that is freaking scary!
The Moon and the Tide was a fun and slightly different take on the mermaid Lore, and I am having a great time with the series. I am also looking forward to learning more about Marina's muse powers in the next book!
Because of some mild violence, I would recommend this book for ages 13 and up.
I loved The Moon and The Tide even more than I loved Between the Land and The Sea. It gave us the perfect mix of everything and I couldn't get enough. In my previous review of Between the Land and The Sea (see review here), I pointed out that everything was perfect like a Disney movie. The Moon and The Tide was NOTHING like a Disney movie. It had addiction (which I LOVED, and made me laugh sometimes) and sneakiness, passion, romance, control, betrayal, kidnapping, plenty of eye candy, and much, much more. I can't think of one bad thing to say about this book (and that's really saying something).
The relationship between Ethan and Marina is sweet and intense. I got annoyed at Ethan sometimes because I felt as if he wanted to change who Marina was; like Ethan didn't like all of who Marina was inside. It was a good addition to the book though because some books where the relationship is all peachy with bows and rainbows and fireworks just seems, ummm fake, and this one adds a realistic flare to it. It makes me think that Ethan is a real guy with real insecurities and I love it! I like getting mad at a character every once in a while, only to later apologize to them for getting upset (haha). I also liked Kimo, the sexy, strong Hawaiian surfer. Let me just say that if I met him, I would definitely....ummm....say hi (wink wink). He also reminds me of a real guy too. (I wont explain why, just read the book and you'll see) There's just something about men that see what they want and just try to reach out and grab it that I love!
This book was the best of the series (so far). It throws quite a bit of curveballs and, although most of them are to be expected, you enjoy watching them occur. I would definitely suggest to anyone who has not read this series yet: DO IT NOW!!! (They're really a steal at between $.99 and $2.99 on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Smashwords for the ebooks) As for the rating? I give it 5 Stars!
The verdict is out: MT#2 was better than the first.
The story picks up from where it left off, but this time around, the action, adventure, risk, danger, and drama are magnified. There’s trouble in paradise for the perfect couple, and Marina treads in dangerous waters – putting more than one life at risk. Friendships are forged, relationships are questioned, secrets lurk behind sweet smiles, and surprising truths are revealed.
Marina’s constantly being challenged, and struggles with her identity – balancing her life between the land and the ocean. She’s drawn to the sea and all its’ splendor; she craves the freedom, and strength the sea can offer her. Yet, she’s inexplicably tied to the land, her family, friends, and most of all, Ethan. But there are other mysterious forces at play – an unknown enemy, dangerous, powerful, and elusive. These factors culminated into an overall: fantastic, brilliant, exciting, intense, and captivating read.
Loved it! Exciting mermaid drama! I can't wait to read the last two, but I gotta get through these library books I have on my Kindle first before they are gone! Then, I will come back to them!
The Moon and Tide was a great sequel to Between the Land and Sea, and I really enjoyed finding out more about Marina and the mermaids. The book picks up not long after the ending of Between the Land and Sea; Marina is in Norway, celebrating her father’s Nobel Prize achievement, and she’s missing Aptos (and her boyfriend Ethan) like crazy. But she is glad that her dad’s finally come clean and told her all about her mermaid heritage. When she arrives home, she thinks all the chaos of the last few months is over, but Marina discovers this is far from the truth – there’s a lot about the mermaids she still doesn’t know, and a new threat arises, putting Marina and her family in danger. With her relationships now under strain and her addiction to the sea worse than ever, Marina has to find a way of somehow balancing her life on land and her life in the sea.
I really enjoyed The Moon and the Tide; in this one, Marina was a lot less frightened of the sea and the mermaids, and refused to listen to anyone when they told her to stay away from them. I liked the way the author presented Marina’s love of the sea and surfing as an actual addiction – Marina knew that it was dangerous to be in the sea alone, or to go surfing at night, but part of her craved the water, and she literally couldn’t stand being away from it, even for a day. I liked how we got to see this side of her, because I think it really helped the reader understand the difficulty of Marina’s situation; she loved her family and Ethan so much and she knew she could never bear to be away from them, but she also needed the sea in her life and needed to swim and surf, and the two things conflicted because her friends thought the ocean was too dangerous for her. This caused her a lot of stress, because she couldn’t do either without upsetting someone along the way.
Another thing I liked about The Moon and Tide was the growing friendship between Marina and Shayla. Shayla was previously one of Marina’s “enemies” – she was the typical nasty girl at school who made fun of Marina and her cousin, Cruz. However, there was a lot more to Shayla than one would have first thought; she was actually quite a complex character, with a lot of her own issues that she didn’t know how to deal with. After Marina saved her life in book one, Shayla became a lot warmer towards her, and in this book we really got to see their friendship develop, which is something I really enjoyed reading about, because I loved learning more about Shayla and I liked seeing this nicer and kinder side to her.
Aunt Evie played a slightly bigger role in this book and wasn’t just the rich neighbour sending extravagant gifts. I think Marina was a bit slow to grasp what was going on involving Evie – something I had guessed in book one, Marina was only starting to realise now – even Ethan suspected something was up, and he’d only met Evie once! I guess I could understand why though – Evie had been part of Marina’s life since the beginning, and so there was really no reason for her to think of her as anything other than part of the family. Plus, Evie was genuinely just a nice person, and really cared for Marina, and it was difficult not to like her when she was so charming and lovely.
I think my favourite new character in this book was probably Kimo, the famous professional surfer that Marina met while surfing with Shayla. Kimo seemed like a really nice guy, and was very impressed by Marina’s surfing skills, especially since she’d only be surfing a few months. I liked the banter between the two; Kimo was pretty funny and had taken an immediate liking to Marina, and was trying to persuade her to go surfing on tour with him and his friends. Ethan, as one would expect, didn’t think too much of Kimo, which I found quite amusing. While I did like Ethan, I felt he was a bit overprotective in this book and spent a lot of time trying to tell Marina what to do (I was kind of glad when she didn’t listen). He did seem to really care for Marina though, and could be very romantic, and I loved all their scenes together, especially the really cute and funny ones which made me smile.
Overall, The Moon and Sea was a great addition to the series, and I’m looking forward to the next book, The Fate of the Muse. There are a lot of questions that still need answering, and I’m excited about finding out the answers!
Just when Marina thinks she has a handle on her mermaid life, she is thrown for another loop. Or two! An unfortunate accident forces Marina to expose herself as a mermaid and although she tries hard to keep the secret under wraps, the information leaks out to the evil forces who are conspiring against her. Secrets long kept begin to surface and Marina is caught in a web of lies and betrayal. As Marina feels her life spiraling out of control, she seeks comfort in the waves of the ocean. Surfing becomes an obsession, a need. Her connections to the mermaids increase bringing with it a greater awareness of her special abilities and powers. When Marina realizes the mermaids are in danger her instinct is to try to save them. But the attempt could just be the end of everything Marina has dreamed of.
I was so happy to have the second book to delve right into after finishing the first book of this series. I found myself wanting to know what was going to happen next for Marina and Ethan and instant gratification should never be under-rated. This book was a real page turner for me. It had romance, action and mystery. The twists and turns were fun, the characters engaging. I enjoyed getting to know the characters even more in this second book.
I, personally, love the way Marina gets caught up in the feelings of the ocean while surfing. I just happened to be home, in CA while reading these books and we took a day trip to the beach. The sounds and smells that day really brought the book to life for me. I love the ocean but I would say I have a healthy respect (maybe a bit of fear, too) of its power and dangers. Unlike Marina, who was a part of the ocean and the world of mermaids. For me, Marina was a great balance of strength and weakness. I love her loyalty to those she cares about.
Ethan is one of my favorite characters. He is strong and steady. His insecurities come out in this book, but it only made me enjoy him more. I love how he “grounds” Marina., keeps her steady and safe. He is a great character. No love triangle in this series, guys. It’s just one guy and one girl with some bumps along the way. It’s honestly a relief to not have to pick a team and feel bad for one or the other all through the book.
I seriously cannot wait to read the next book in the series. (Here’s where the instant gratification thing isn’t working.) Derrolyn has done a fabulous job at creating a compelling, romantic story of mermaids and love.
*There is frequent profanity and mild obscenities. A couple uses of the “B” word. There are some sexual references and some violence. (in both books)
This was the second book in the series and must be read it order. The plot and characters continue to be well done. I particularly enjoy the little high school gang of friends.
The book begins where the first one left off. The first third of the book was the set up section for what was to come. Marina sees her friends' talents finally recognized including a nice surprise in the form of Shayla who as become more of a friend after the events of the first book. Evie and Ethan meet like two titans and walk away suspicious of each other. Marina still has that overwhelming call from the sea and is trying to learn how to reconcile the two halves of herself. There is the new mysterious quality to Evie and foreshadowing of events going on beneath the surface.
It was the part about Marina's inner angst and struggles in the first part of the book that just did not set well with me as a reader. I was not fond of her thought processing or her treatment of Ethan. She again is into sneaking and lying- putting herself into danger and manages to hurt others in the process. I was also not impressed with the way the father checked out of her life knowing what he knows. I love Dutch and Abby, but they too seemed content to be oblivious just trusting the kids to do right and stay out of trouble.
Fortunately, there was the latter two-thirds of the book. Marina seems to really come into her own and be more of a girl that I could like when she must step up with heroic courage to face physical danger on all sides, what she thinks of as betrayal, a choice of love interest, and then must make decisions that affect her family and friends. Mer-girl Power!
Yeah, about the last portions of the book- x-sigh-ting!!! I couldn't stop reading. Marina's made of stern stuff and I really love how Ethan steps up and supports her. He's a real treasure in that he will sacrifice his future plans if he has to just to be with Marina and he is capable of being supportive even when he understands or disagrees. He seems to be the only one capable of calling it like he sees it with her too which she really needs. Everything about Evie becomes clear though now Marina's situation just becomes more complicated. Then the threat of danger is still out there.
Marina comes back more determined than ever. The sea still calls for her, luring her to some potentially dangerous situations while surfing. She seems to crave it constantly, obsessing over the sea to the point where she can’t think of anything else but surfing. Since struggling to ignore the call of the sea only makes her more agitated, she decides to manage it. Marina begins to lead a double life in an attempt to calm the need to be in the sea.
Ethan is equal parts scared of Marina’s powers and fascinated by them. What he really fears though is that she will leave, but that’s no reason to want to cage her and control her. He turns out really overprotective and really looses it one time, going so far as yelling at her. Sweet, sweet Ethan…I totally didn’t expect you to do that! Eventually he learns he can’t keep a half mermaid from her sea. But the sea is not safe anymore, not even for the mermaids. One of them has gone missing!
In the end Marina will have to make a choice, between staying or leaving, between running away or daring fate.
I really enjoyed this book much more than the first one. I think it’s definitely because of more inner dialogue and less description. It all just got me so involved that I could get in Marina’s head and live it all through her. I liked the couple of new characters that appeared, and loved the happenings with the old ones.
Again, I hated it when Marina started lying to Ethan again, but I guess I could understand her predicament. If she told him the truth he would flip, and if she didn’t he would still flip when he found out. Ethan’s very strict about being honest, so I was again surprised when he lies to her. Yes, sweet Ethan LIES. That brings on a storm of love problems to Marina’s plate, sending her even more out to the sea.
The end had me clinging to my chair and zipping through the pages. It was a relief how it all turned out, and I can’t wait to read The Fate of the Muse (Marina’s Tales #3) when it comes out!
"Come back to me" I whispered , "You were meant to be mine."~Marina
The Moon and the Tide brings us back to the same characters, places and romance we loved from Between the Land and the Sea. This time there are evil plans set in motion for Marina..someone is coming after her..and they'll stop and nothing to get her..
Marina thinks she finally has her life set, she may have found out she is half mermaid...but that's all behind her right? After some crazy events, and finally facing the mermaid concil and telling them she denies her birthright of imortality and being a full mermaid..Marina is given a certain amount of moons till she will permentaly be denied her birth right of being a full mermaid and immortal..Marina knows she will never choose to be a mermaid, but with problems in her relationship with Ethan stirring things up, and her constant want to be in the water..being a mermaid is starting to look more and more appealing..and as if all of this isn't enough on Marina's plate..she also has someone watching her every move..and what they have planned for her and the other mermaids is unthinkable..
This was an amazing installement in the Marina's Tales series! I feel everything kicked up in this addition, everything was put up a notch, the romance, the mystery, and the action While everything was being notched up Derrolyn also added a whole new aspect to her series, thrill. The Moon and the Tide had me on the edge of my seat wondering what was gonna happen next, and if the characters I had learned to love were all going to be okay in the end of it all.
Marina's Tales is the first mermaid series I have read, and it just keeps getting better and better! The Moon and the Tide has left me dying for book three in this incredibly romantic and edge of my seat series.
Book two in Marina's Tale opens up about a week after book one, Between the Land and the Sea. Marina is still fighting to stay a human on land, even though the water calls to her. She and Ethan have grown closer than ever and she is really getting the hang of surfing.
Ethan has become a protector and he worries all the time about Marina. He is terrified something will happen to her or that she will decide to become a mermaid and leave him. Marina tries to pacify Ethan but she can't ignore the call of the sea. She goes surfing any chance she gets and she is excellent at it. The water talks to her and before long a world class surfer is wanting her to surf professionally.
When her dad desires her to spend time with him in Greece, she goes but she missed Ethan and the sea. But the helicopter crashes into the ocean and only Marina can save them. Unfortunately, the videos of the crash show Marina with a mermaid's tail and before long it's spread all over the internet.
Marina's Aunt Evie implores Marina to take to safety but Marina is determined to be with Ethan and surf. She takes to surfing at midnight, a very dangerous idea, but she feels comfortable doing so with her mermaid sister Lorelei. But when she and Lorelei are kidnapped by very bad men, she questions her choices. Without water, a mermaid will die.
As family secrets are revealed, love questioned and danger afloat, there is much to love in this thrilling second installment. The characters are modern and likable, the plot unfolds at a great pace and the writing is remarkable. I love this series and can't wait to read the final installment, The Fate of the Muse! A great fantasy young adult series I can't recommend highly enough!
In this story Marina gets more and more addicted to surfing and lets Lorelei lead her into more and more dangerous situations. This causes conflicts with Ethan because he can see the danger and Marina can not. An old girlfriend of Ethan's makes an appearance in this one. When Ethan lies about seeing her, Marina feels both hurt and betrayed by him.
Evie is also determined to break them up because she sees Ethan as being too controlling. Marina learns lots of new things about Evie and Evie's role in her life in this episode. She also learns more about her life as a hybrid and what that could mean both for herself and for her friends.
A new enemy appears too. This one wants to have Marina's powers to bring out the best in people under his control. It seems that there are factions of hybrids who want to use Marina's powers to gain power and wealth and are willing to do anything to control her.
I enjoyed both of these stories and look forward to the third book in the series - The Fate of the Muse. I think that these books would be engaging for any young adult reader who likes their romance with a bit of the paranormal. Unfortunately, without a print copy being available, these will be restricted to those with ereaders or who are willing to read on the computer screen.
I love the way Derrolyn Anderson continues this book. There isn't alot that I can say that wont give away most of whats happened in the first book or big spoilers for this one.
The Moon and the Tide brought back alot of the great characters plus a few new ones. i loved that Shayla was brought back and she has found a new purpose in life instead of just being a bully. Cruz is still around with his very self centered-ness but you can't help but love him.
Marina has alot on her plate in the second book of the Marina's tales series. Marina has a dilemma on her hands that's shes trying to manage. She knows she will never choose to be a mermaid for the rest of her life, but with some mishaps in her relationship with Ethan she gets the need to be in the water every second. She gets into some dangerous positions and ends up having her every move watched. Even though shes trying to keep everything together she finds out of huge secret that someone in her life has been keeping from her.
This books is just as good as the last and plus a new added bonus. Some thrill and intrigue. Good book and i cant wait for book three :)
The second in the series of Marina’s tales was a fantastic development of her story and her secret. She faces a lot of new challenges in her relationships with family and friends, and she has to make decisions that she never could have imagined having to make. This book has Marina learning more about her secret and how some of the people around her have been a part of it since her birth. I enjoyed her exploring the water elements, and how it really pulls her in and becomes somewhat of an addiction for her to go surfing, just to be in her element. Again this story was well written and realistic for the YA age and audience. I appreciated that the author showed Marina wanting to make smart choices, smarter than even some adults in her life had shown. The descriptions of the places she travels to in the story are fantastic and I really hope that the third installment comes out soon, I’m looking forward to reading it!
This sequel is a wonderful continuation of this story. It pulls you in and keeps you holding your breath until the very end. Marina is a wonderful character who is conflicted between her two worlds. The author does a great job showing the strong forces that pull her each way. The characters from the last story continue to delight with commentary and side stories. The new characters easily fit into the story, adding suspense to Marina's life. Though you get more into the details of the world of mermaids, it still seems believable. Great read with good romance and suspense. I simply loved this and cannot wait to get my hands on the next book.
I purchased this immediately after finishing BL&S, devouring this book like an addict. The imagery is gorgeous, the characters fleshy and entertaining in their finery. I loved the added story line surrounding Aunt Evie. Let me just tell you to get ready for everything that goes down. Like any well planned novel, there are twists and turns, passions and intrigues, with plenty of mermaid action to satisfy your sea legs.
I love reading this series! Learning more about the mermaids tale is so neat and interesting. The author did a great job in making it a different story telling of mermaids! I def have the urge to want to live by the ocean in a cute cottage and even try surfing. Haha. And surprisingly to visit California beaches, which has honestly never been a trip I considered before these books. I am so looking forward to the next book! :)
Marina Vanderpool is the half human, half mermaid child of a mermaid and a Nobel prize winning scientist. She lives a life that most people only dream of and has four years to decide whether she wants to be a child of the land or the sea. Though she's made her choice to stay with her human family before, she can't deny that the sea and her mermaid sisters call to her. Marina becomes like a rope in an emotional tug of war between her sea siren sisters and her human friends and family. Neither wants to share her or give her up and she isn't willing to turn her back on either. When her secret is exposed during a terrible accident everyone she cares about is threatened. Will she be able to protect them all? Can she even protect herself?
Anderson makes a brilliant return in the second story in her Marina's Tales series. Her characters start to really take shape in this story. Marina has an addictive personality, she's slightly self centered and on the dishonest side. Evan is clingy and though protective definite leaning toward controlling in his need to protect her and keep her. Aunt Evie is manipulative. Cruz, is WAY self centered, it's almost like he thinks the world revolves around him. Meghan get's a bossy side. Now if you've read my review from yesterday you'll actually understand how this is an EXCELLENT development in Derrolyn Anderson's work. In the first novel her characters were just too perfect to feel real. In this tale she provides them with flaws, makes them human for the reader allowing the reader to become a little more attached to each character through their flaws.
In this tale she also begins to reveal a little more of what the mermaids' abilities really are. The revelation of their abilities really puts a nice explanation on why every character's life in this novel seems so perfect. It's not just chance, it's magic. Of course, now I need to half mermaid to be my friend so I can lead that kind of life. In The Moon and The Tide Anderson takes the flaws from her first novel and puts a couple of explanations on them to make them seem more realistic because of the mermaid magic woven into the story. She also explains that Marina's lavish lifestyle was created by design to make her immune to persuasion in the form of bribery. She was raised to not value wealth so that she could never be manipulated by wealth. I don't know if this spin and explanation were initially planned by the author when she plotted out the series or a clever way to clean up constructive reviews from her first work right after it was published, however what she's done in this novel really works.
She did have a couple of hard to believe scenes, like one where Marina and Lorelei take out some burly bad guys, which did lower my rating a tad. Overall though it was a fast paced and well told story that I really enjoyed reading.
She also has a wonderful way of addressing the issues of sex with teens, she doesn't deny that the idea appeals to them, that they're tempted and close to crossing that line. However she also doesn't cross that line with teen readers and condoning premarital teenage sex. I'm not sure if she plans to in future novels, but so far she's keeping the book right where it should be for teen readers without making the teens seem like they're oblivious to hormones.
Anderson is not a writer to be missed in the young adult fantasy genre. The Moon and Tide is a wonderful tale of mermaids, love and adventure, and for the price it would be a serious mistake to pass over this series.
Note: This is the 2nd book in the Marina's Tales series. If you didn't read the 1st one, this review will contain spoilers from the 1st book.
Summary: Things are just settling down and Marina is truly enjoying life again. She is able to return the company of her friends and family and the ocean. So far, things are going great... or so she thinks. Marina begins having some disconcerting visions letting her know the future is at stake. One thing leads to another and Marina finds herself caught in a situation that would expose her secret. She discovers hidden secrets along the way and must overcome betrayal, jealousy, and any other distractions that might render her from saving the ones she loves. Will she be able to stay strong and fight or will Marina back down from it all?
My Thoughts: Geezus. This is really different from the first book. The first book was like a setup and introduction to Marina's environment while The Moon and The Tide really spices things up with unexpected twists and turns. There is a ton of action and mystery packed into this book and I could not put it down. I became so involved with the characters and plot and it had me at the edge of my seat.
The book started off with a fun, relaxing vibe and I was just expecting to read about Marina's relationship, the town, surfing, etc. I was in no way prepared for the chaos that ensued as the book progressed. So many things were going on and I felt bad for the characters and what they had to go through.
In the first book, we were introduced to the characters and learn a bit about them. The Moon and The Tide does a great job giving us more info about the characters and their relationships with one another. We get to learn more about Marina, Ethan, Lorlei, Evie, etc. and I love how we get a better taste of the characters. I especially liked Marina's character development in the story and how she such was a strong female protagonist. Her relationship with Ethan defiantly intensified, although I did think they were moving a bit too fast, but then I realized they been through a lot together. Also, I thought the "bad guys" were well written--they were truly evil and I loved to hate them.
The writing style is awesome as usual. Anderson does a great job with the descriptions (they're vivid and detailed, but not to the point where she's describing the threads on a pillow).
I remember reading the first book and wanting more answers... well, the second book delivers. The secrets that are uncovered are shocking and the mermaid lore in this book is creative and interesting to learn about.
Conclusion: Overall, the story played out very well and I the ending is perfect, it's not too abrupt and you'll be excited to read the sequel when it comes out. It is very intense and a rollercoaster ride. If you liked the first one, you'll definitely enjoy the second one (maybe even more). Sorry this review is a bit long--there is just so much that happens within this book. :)

We meet our friends just a short time after the last turn of the page. The excitement is high, the fashion jaw droppingly gorgeous, and the danger as real as ever. Marina's decision to have a life on land as well as at sea (temporarily at least) is about to have some serious consequences. Her love of surfing has grown...so much so that while she promises Ethan (her match made in heaven) that she will stay away from the water...especially her mermaid relatives....she just can't seem to help herself. The call of the wet and wild is too great and her desire to keep her promise leads to some dangerous nighttime activities. Ever dreamed of night surfing? That was Evie's solution to quenching her thirst so to speak and gaining that tranquility that a day on the water provided. Things were going well and Ethan was none the wiser...notice I said Ethan.
Although she may have thought her activities went unnoticed, they definitely were not. Someone was watching....waiting for just the right moment to set plans in motion so devious, so life threatening in every sense of the word..that I can't spill the beans on it here. Suffice it to say that Evie will have to call on all the powers her heritage has bestowed on her in order to escape the fate designed for her by someone else.
Sound complicated? Not really....but it adds another element of surprise and drama to the story that while unexpected, works well to keep readers on their toes. Just when you've settled in to a routine of sorts...BAM! You're sideswiped by the change of events. Good stuff indeed....now a few things to note beyond the greatness of the story....
I was right! There IS something different about Evie, so be sure to pay attention for the big reveal. The revelation that there is an evil organization out to get Marina and her kind that doesn't involve the government is surprising....but just who makes up that group, even more so; again something to watch for because the details can get murky. Although Marina's personality is not manipulative or overtly flirty, it was nice to see her embracing her "talents"; she knew they'd provide the edge she needed to try and defeat the intentions of those around her...even if the results were a bit intense.
If mermaids are the next big thing, this author has it down pat. A great follow up to the success that was book one (BETWEEN THE LAND AND THE SEA) and a series that Young Adult fans will want to make sure is on their radar. Marina's past may no longer be a complete mystery, but her future is still heavily veiled. She is unique in many ways and her relationship with land, man, and sea is a rocky road at best; how it all fits into the big picture of things is gonna be interesting.
Recommended read for middle grade readers through adults. The PG13 nature of the writing keeps things even keel so it can be enjoyed by one and all.
One of my favorite things about series or trilogy's is that the story continues on and you get to hear more about what is happening with the characters that you fall in love with! The Moon and the Tide was everything I wanted in a sequel; Derrolyn continues the story of Marina and her quest to figure out her family history, the mermaids’ life and her relationship with Ethan. This story is jammed packed with more unique twists, adventures and dangers that I felt like I couldn't read it fast enough!
To say that this book was as good as the first book is not enough, I felt it was better just because the first book laid down the characters and the story line and book two is bringing the characters more alive and the story more adventurous. Just like in the first book there are secrets that unfold and new mystery that is added which makes The Moon and the Tide more intense!
The best thing to love in this book, at least for me, is the romantic development between Marina and Ethan. Their relationship starts off sweet and innocent in book one but in book two it really feels like it matures a lot more as they learn more about each other’s personalities and deal with stress! I love that Derrolyn doesn't add another guy to the mix to make this like every other YA novel that has a love triangle! That just gets old! And it stays clean-thank you Derrolyn!!
The new characters that are added make the story even better also! There is the professional surfer Kimo that is woven through the story line a couple of times and I really enjoyed his Hawaiian accent! There is also the bully Shayla in book one that is more in book two now and it really is fun to see this character develop in to someone lovable!
I love hearing more about the mermaids and their unique history and culture and I just really felt like I was right there watching the story on the big screen in front of me. The description to details about everything going makes this story come alive!
If you loved the first book, Between the Land and the Sea, then you have to devour The Moon and the Tide. There is so much to love about it and I'm not sure I am even able to give you enough of a glimpse to satisfy you because I could just go on and on and about all I loved!
I received a copy of this book to read and review from the author. My review is not biased by the fact that I was given this book. I HONESTLY read and review any book whether bought or given to me. If I did not like the book I would definitely not give a rave review or recommend it.
So, I have to start this review by saying that I don't like this cover at all. In fact, I'm glad that I did not see the cover before I started reading the book because I think that seeing the cover would have been a real deterrent for me. I liked the cover for book one, but Marina just looks shocked here, and why does Ethan's skin look so gray? It looks like he's in black and white while she's in color. My thoughts on the cover don't match my thoughts on the book at all. Please don't judge this book by its cover, because it really was a good read.
I moved right from book one, Between the Land and the Sea, to book two, The Moon and the Tide. The sneak peek of book two at the end of book one left me wanting more and I couldn't wait to find out what happens next to Marina and the gang. The prologue to The Moon and the Tide was very intriguing, and I found myself wanting to read quickly to find out how the events in the prologue would eventually come to fruition. I had suspected that there was more than meets the eye to Evie for a while, and felt justified in my suspicion of her once I read about her true involvement in Marina's life.
My only complaint about book one was the focus on fashion. I think I was mostly jealous of Marina with all of her beautiful designer clothes, shoes, and handbags. There was still a focus on fashion in The Moon and the Tide, but it was targeted towards Cruz and his budding design career. I like Cruz as a character and enjoyed this aspect of the story. I also liked reading about Marina's painting. I enjoyed seeing that side of her and thought it added depth to her character.
I really wish that Ethan would not have been so clingy and possessive. He knows that Marina is not a normal girl, and he should not expect a normal teen relationship from her. I didn't like that he was not more supportive of her throughout most of the book. His behavior is a common thing to expect from boyfriends in YA literature, and it felt formulaic. Another thing that bothered me were Marina's poor decisions, which put her in danger repeatedly throughout the book. She continually ignored the input of everyone around her, who were trying to keep her safe, and did what she wanted to do. Just when I thought I couldn't take any more of her willful stubbornness, she started to grow and change.
Overall, I enjoyed The Moon and the Tide and will definitely be looking forward to the next book in the series.
The Moon and the Tide had me alternating between irritation and admiration for Marina, back and forth like a see-saw. Her emotions and decisions were all over the place, running the gambit of every possible conclusion.
We'll start with Ethan. He was a bit too domineering for my taste, and I agreed with Evie (before she changed her mind) that he was far too controlling and obstinate. He made no effort to try and understand Marina's point of view, which irritated me. I understand he's worried about her well-being, but I felt like he was purposely being obtuse about how much she yearned to learn about her family. I mean, not only is she finally learning the truth about her mother, someone she's always wondered about, but she's getting to learn all this secret knowledge about a being that has been thought to be myth for forever! I just couldn't understand it. Some things are worth the danger.
I also got a bit annoyed with the thoughtlessness Marina had. The whole thing with the black car following her around, repeatedly returning to a surfing point that has malicious people hunting around, staying at the point near the cove and cornering herself. I got so frustrated with her decisions and wanted to smack some sense into her.
That being said though, I still thoroughly enjoyed the second book in the series. The plot was quick and was constantly moving, and everything was used to further the plot. There weren't any useless scenes just to take up space, which I really appreciate. Everything had a purpose. I particularly like that Evie's extravagant lifestyle--and why she lavished it on Marina--was explained. And as someone that can usually predict where a story is going to go, I found that much of this was hard for me to see coming. With the exception of Evie, because that was given to us within the first chapter.
Oh, the other thing that kind of bothered me was Marina's thoughtlessness with
I really hope we get to see more of the mermaids next time around. This series has only built up steam and I'm fascinated to see where it will go.
I always find it a booger in YA books when (typically in the second or so book of a series) the female lead character (who is a newly discovered paranormal being who is starting to come into her abilities) starts to be held back by her boyfriend (who was once entirely supportive of her abilities) because he no longer feels entirely secure in his place in her newly ever changing life (ie. Laurel and David in Aprilynne Pike's "Wings" series, Kaylee and Nash from Rachel Vincent's "Soul Screamers" series, Clary and Jace from Cassie Clare's "Mortal Instruments" series, etc.) and therefore I was a bit disappointed to see that occur in this book. I especially find it frustrating when the male character jumps into the relationship with his girlfriend knowing that his she is in no way conventional (ie. she is a mermaid or she is a fairy) and yet he expects an entirely conventional girlfriend.
While the big reveal of this book didn't take me all that much by surprise, as it was hinted right from the get-go of this book, I was still excited to see how Derrolyn would have played it out- obviously she did a breathtaking job on it! Furthermore, this book was filled with a ton of action (ie. kidnappings, helicopter crashes, surfing wipe-outs, etc.) and while all of the action could have been overwhelming I never once thought while reading it, "OMG another accident? What is this? One Tree Hill?"
And I never would have thought that I would have found myself interested in surfing at all, but it is clear that after reading this book Derrolyn really knows what she is talking about- I think that I may have become as obsessed as Marina was with this past time. Once again, the characters were great- especially Shayla, the new addition to the gang. I can totally understand why she acted the way that she did in the first book, you can't help but feel for her and hope that Marina's vision of her does come true.
All in all, this is an amazing sequel to "Between the Land and the Sea"- I seriously cannot praise this series enough. I cannot wait to see what Derrolyn has in store for us next!
I really liked this novel, even more than the first. I have become addicted to Marina's story!
There seems to be a perfect blend of romance and action happening in this novel. There's a lot of Marina and Ethan being together but there's also a heck of a lot happening to Marina. She finds herself in a lot of situations in this novel!
I really like it that everything I can think of is explained well in this novel. If you don't understand why something is happening, there's definitely an answer by the end. Even how they get out, or in, of some situations so easily sometimes is explained. And it makes sense!! Nothing bothers me more than characters getting out of situations but multiple bouts of luck. That doesn't happen in this novel, at least I didn't notice it did.
One of the things that bothered me was It also really bothered me that Marina wouldn't just go talk to Ethan sometimes when she wanted to see him.
I loved that we saw ore Kimo because I think he's a really fun character. And more Lorelei because she just reminds me of a human barbie - beautiful, childish and excited all the time.
Marina didn't tell Boris that someone was creeping on her when I thought she should have, and she even had multiple opportunities! That disappointed me a little. All she had to do was call. Oh, and I'm also confused why Ethan and Marina all of a sudden have phones in this novel but they never used them in the first and only certain occasions here.
I liked the way Marina's obsession with the water was shown. She really is like an addict and I wouldn't expect anything less from her because she's literally fighting against her nature. As a reader I just wish she would be more careful! Every time she went surfing I kept waiting for something bad to happen!
The ending with her also really surprised me and I actually liked the way the ending played out. This novel left me craving more and I'm diving into the next right away :D
It hasn’t been long since Marina found out that her mother was a mermaid…making her half-human, half-mermaid. If it wasn’t for Ethan, the love of her life, Marina would be lost at sea, running (or swimming, in this case) wild among the mermaids. Marina may have declined their offer to become an immortal mermaid permanently, but the lure of the sea is as tempting as ever. But that is the least of her problems when tragedy strikes. After a terrible accident the exposes mermaids, Marina is being pursued by unknown forces that put Marina and the rest of the mermaids in danger.
I LOVED this book! It was very intense and suspenseful…especially toward the end! I will admit, however, the first half of the book I thought was slow and a bit hard to get into. But after that halfway mark things really started to pick up! The plot was crazy good, and Marina proved herself to be strong. I really like the way she carries herself and handles things. Marina is a very likable character :)
I finally came to understand why Marina has always been showered with all the luxury (thanks to Aunt Evie, of course). In the beginning all the luxury seemed a bit much to me…perhaps because I couldn’t relate. But at the end I finally understood why Evie did this.
Oh Evie, you sneaky ex-model you.
There were many twists and turns in this book that caught me off guard! I love a book that can do that to me! I also love that there was mythology thrown in here...mythology just makes everything better ;)
Aside from the fact that the book sometimes seemed to read like an essay (and the other mentioned things), I really enjoyed this book! I cannot wait to finish reading Marina’s Tales! And the book cover…love it!!
The Moon And The Tide was even better than the first book if that is possible. I really liked the first book but the author brought so much more to this one. We get to enjoy the returning characters along with some new interesting ones.
While on vacation with her dad, another one of Marina's previous visions happens. A terrible accident that will cause her to revel herself as a mermaid. This in turn sets off a series of events that will change everything that Marina has ever known. Her relationship with Ethan has some bumps in the road. This causes her to want to be in the water any chance she can get. Marina and Lorelei find themselves in some dangerous situations.
Some major secrets are revealed and there is a lot more action, adventure and emotions. Marina finds out that she has some powers of persuasion that always doesn't turn out like she hopes. I really liked how the characters really developed more into their own. Cruz just cracks me up with all his designer attitude. Megan has become much more sure of herself which plays out in her music. Shayla, I was surprised by how much she has changed. She went from bullying Marina to becoming such a good friend. I can't leave out Evie, she is like that aunt that I would love to have along with her funny bodyguard Boris.
There are so many ups and downs with Marina's emotions and relationships. There is a lot going on in this sequel but I don't want to really give away any spoilers. This is a must read though. I can't wait to read the next one and see what exciting adventures are in store for Marina, her family and friends. This e-book was provided to me by the author for review. This did not affect my review in any way.
Moon and the Tide is the second book in the thrilling series, Marina's Tales (To see my review to the first one, click here). My only complaint in the last one would have been that we didn't discover that much about the mermaids themselves, but I didn't add that in my review because I knew there would be more in the next books in the series. In this one, Marina is getting more eager about surfing which leads her to Lorelei - her mermaid sister - and that is bound to lead her to more adventures. She discovers that they are in danger - can she throw everything away to save them?
She is struggling with Ethan's trust, her boyfriend who she meets in book one. His ex-girlfriend is back, and she feels betrayed when he lies about who this girl is. I love the two as a couple, and when they argue it breaks my heart too.
This book is even better than the first! As I mentioned in my last review, I am not usually a fan of paranormal romances until this book. The author's words made my gripped to my computer screen, I really wanted to read on. It felt real, and Derrolyn made the book come to life. I could see the splashing of the mermaid's tales, taste the salty water, and feel Marina's pain when she devours over Ethan.
All the characters are well put together, and their different personalities clash together and become a fantastic story. The dialog is well-written, and they come to life on the page. They fit in easily with the story, making it an even more engaging book.
I recommend this to all teens (usually female) and adults. There was always something happening, and I sat on the edge of my seat wondering what would be the next event in the story.
What I liked: 1) Once again, Cruz was my favorite character. He's funny, he's sensitive, and seems to have grown a lot from book one to book two. He's much more comfortable with himself. 2) I also loved the addition of Shayla to Marina's ragtag team of friends. She seemed to be the one to challenge Marina the most, and help her develop her...rebellious side. 3) Marina also developed her relationship more with Lorelai, her mermaid sister. What I liked about that was it gave Marina a chance to understand her heritage a little better, her mother's side of the family. 4) A new twist was introduced into the plot, which lead to Marina feeling very betrayed by people she cared about. I really liked the way Miz Anderson spun that tale and led Marina to handle it. There was really great character development throughout the whole book. Including some with Ethan, which is what I was missing from the first book.
What I didn't: 1) The plot didn't flow as well in this story as it had in the first. Almost as if there were too many new things introduced, and it had me confused on occasion.
Overall thoughts: This was a nice development from the first book. The characters all seemed to grow from book one to book two, and some new and interesting things were interested into the plot. There were a few points that I needed to re-read to understand, but overall, the story was wrapped up nicely in the end. Marina's still got some things to work out in her life, and I expect we'll see more of Marina's Tales from Miz Anderson.
4.5. This is the second book in this series. You could probably still "get" the story if you haven't read this first book but the first book was great too, why would you want to miss it???
Anyhow, I loved this book as much as I loved the first one. Marina is still trying to figure out her powers but she understands the stakes so much more in this book. I love her character. She's just really well written. She feels like a really 3-D character; like someone that you might come across in real life. She has real interests. She has a definitive personality. Not everything that you learn about her factors directly into the action of the book, which to me, makes her seem all the more real.
For that matter, I think that one of the highlights of this series continue to be the characters. I love them; especially Marina's group of friends, Megan (great name - by the way, hah), Cruz, and Ethan. I also liked that Shayla gets into the fold in this book. I didn't like her much in the first book of this series. They are all very real characters with different stories and different interests. They definitely help to make the book fun.
I loved all of the twists in this book. The book starts off slow and steady but quickly became increasingly exciting throughout the book. A lot of the twists I didn't see coming at all, which is always very exciting as I love a big surprise. It really made me excited for the next book, which I am hoping to get to next week.
This is a very fun Young Adult fiction series and definitely is a shining example of why reading indie books can be so much fun!
